RESUMO

PURPOSE: Poorly differentiated invasive non-mucinous pulmonary adenocarcinoma (IPA), based on the novel grading system, was related to poor prognosis, with a high risk of lymph node metastasis and local recurrence. This study aimed to build the radiomic and quantitative-semantic models of low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) to preoperatively predict the poorly differentiated IPA in nodules with solid component, and compare their diagnostic performance with radiologists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 396 nodules from 388 eligible patients, who underwent LDCT scan within 2 weeks before surgery and were pathologically diagnosed with IPA, were retrospectively enrolled between July 2018 and December 2021. Nodules were divided into two independent cohorts according to scanners: primary cohort (195 well/moderate differentiated and 64 poorly differentiated) and validation cohort (104 well/moderate differentiated and 33 poorly differentiated). The radiomic and quantitative-semantic models were built using multivariable logistic regression. The diagnostic performance of the models and radiologists was assessed by area under curve (AUC) of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. RESULTS: No significant differences of AUCs were found between the radiomic and quantitative-semantic model in primary and validation cohorts (0.921 vs. 0.923, P = 0.846 and 0.938 vs. 0.911, P = 0.161). Both the models outperformed three radiologists in the validation cohort (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The radiomic and quantitative-semantic models of LDCT, which could identify the poorly differentiated IPA with excellent diagnostic performance, might provide guidance for therapeutic decision making, such as choosing appropriate surgical method or adjuvant chemotherapy.

Species of Blastocystis Alexieff, 1911 are anaerobic intestinal protists found in humans and many kinds of animals that mainly cause diarrhea, abdominal pain and other clinical symptoms. At present, data on the prevalence and subtype diversity of species of Blastocystis in domestic rabbits are very limited. The purpose of this study was to characterise the infection rate and gene subtype distribution of Blastocystis sp. in domestic rabbits in Henan Province, Central China, and provide foundation for prevention and control of the disease caused by Blastocystis sp. in domestic rabbits. DNA was extracted from 286 fresh rabbit faecal samples collected from four areas of Henan Province, Central China. All DNA samples were screened using PCR and positive samples were sequenced to identify individual subtypes based on the small ribosomal subunit (SSU rRNA) gene. The overall infection rate of Blastocystis sp. in domestic rabbits in Henan Province was 15% (43/286). Three subtypes were identified, including ST1 (26/43, 60%), ST3 (5/43, 12%) and ST7 (12/43, 28%), all of which belonged to potentially zoonotic subtypes, ST1 was the dominant gene subtype. These results showed that infection with Blastocystis sp. was common in domestic rabbits in Henan Province, Central China, and was represented by zoonotic subtypes. Therefore, special attention should be paid to reduce the risk of transmission of Blastocystis sp. from domestic rabbits to humans.

Blastocystis is an anaerobic intestinal protozoan parasite found in humans and many kinds of animals that mainly causes diarrhea, abdominal pain, and other clinical symptoms. At present, research on the prevalence and subtype diversity of Blastocystis in domestic pigeons is very limited. The purpose of this study was to detect the infection rate and gene subtype distribution of Blastocystis in domestic pigeons in Henan Province, Central China, to provide a foundation for preventing and controlling Blastocystis in domestic pigeons. Fecal DNA was extracted from 504 fresh fecal samples of pigeons collected from four areas in Henan Province, Central China. All DNA samples were investigated by polymerase chain reaction, and positive samples were sequenced to analyze the gene subtypes based on small ribosomal subunit (SSU rRNA) gene. The overall infection rate of Blastocystis in pigeons in Henan Province was 7.7% (39/504). Four subtypes (STs) of Blastocystis were identified including ST1 (2/39, 5.1%), ST3 (16/39, 41%), ST4 (1/39, 2.6%), and ST7 (20/39, 51.3%), all of which belonged to zoonotic subtypes, and ST7 was the dominant gene subtype. The results show that Blastocystis infection is common in domestic pigeons in Henan Province, Central China, and the pathogens were zoonotic subtypes. Particular attention should be given to reducing the risk of transmission of Blastocystis from domestic pigeons to humans.

We introduced a kind of novel perfect optical vortex beam, which we termed herein as perfect helical Mathieu vortex (PHMV) beams. The theoretical mechanism regarding the construction of PHMV beams was divided into two parts: generation of helical Mathieu (HM) beams using the stationary phase method and then Fourier transform of HM beams into the PHMV beams. Accordingly, the experimental system for generating PHMV beams was built as follows. Based on the complex amplitude modulation method, HM beams of different orders and ellipticity were generated using an amplitude-type spatial light modulator (SLM) and a radial-helical phase mask. Subsequently, an achromatic Fourier transform lens was illuminated using the HM beams, and the PHMV beams were presented on the focal plane after the Fourier transform lens. The experimental results were consistent with theoretical predictions. Compared with the classical perfect optical vortex (POV) beams, the PHMV beams still retained the property of ring radius independent of topological charge values. The distribution pattern of the PHMV beams can be controlled by the topological charges and elliptical parameters. Furthermore, two important optical properties of the PHMV beams were theoretically elucidated. First, we proved that the PHMV beams carry a fractional order orbital angular momentum (OAM). Second, we found that the complex amplitudes of any two PHMV beams with the same elliptical parameter but different order numbers are orthogonal to each other.

We proposed and demonstrated an integrated high energy efficient and high linearly polarized InGaN/GaN green LED grown on (0001) oriented sapphire with combined metasurface polarizing converter and polarizer system. It is different from those conventional polarized light emissions generated with plasmonic metallic grating in which at least 50% high energy loss occurs inherently due to high reflection of the transverse electric (TE) component of an electric field. A reflecting metasurface, with a two dimensional elliptic metal cylinder array (EMCA) that functions as a half-wave plate, was integrated at the bottom of a LED such that the back-reflected TE component, that is otherwise lost by a dielectric/metal bi-layered wire grids (DMBiWG) polarizer on the top emitting surface of the LED, can be converted to desired transverse magnetic (TM) polarized emission after reflecting from the metasurface. This significantly enhances the polarized light emission efficiency. Experimental results show that extraction efficiency of the polarized emission can be increased by 40% on average in a wide angle of ±60° compared to that with the naked bottom of sapphire substrate, or 20% compared to reflecting Al film on the bottom of a sapphire substrate. An extinction ratio (ER) of average value 20 dB within an angle of ±60° can be simultaneously obtained directly from an InGaN/GaN LED. Our results show the possibility of simultaneously achieving a high degree of polarization and high polarization extraction efficiency at the integrated device level. This advances the field of GaN LED toward energy efficiency, multi-functional applications in illumination, display, medicine, and light manipulation.

We investigate the ultradeep subwavelength imaging of a superlens with a surface plasmon polariton (SPP) cavity. A silver layer is added in the imaging region of the superlens to form an Ag film lens/photoresist/Ag layer cavity, in which the long-range plasmon mode is drastically suppressed and the field of the imaging is significantly amplified and extended over to the entire imaging region due to the SPP resonance inside the cavity. Results show that much improved quality of image with much suppressed sidelobes and much extended depth of focus can be obtained with the cavity structure when compared with the conventional open structure. This is confirmed by the transfer function of the system, which becomes flatter with the cavity structure. The proposed method provides a novel and practically feasible way to achieve images with both high resolution and large depth of field.
