RESUMO

Despite the use of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and concurrent chemotherapy (CCRT), the treatment of locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (LA-NPC) is not satisfactory. EGFR and VEGFR are highly expressed in 60-80% of patients with LA-NPC and this is associated with a poor prognosis, which suggests the potential effectiveness of an inhibitor targeting tumor angiogenesis for treating LA-NPC. The present study aimed to assess the safety and effectiveness of CCRT combined with anlotinib in patients with LA-NPC. The study involved patients with LA-NPC (stage III-IVA) from four institutions in Guangxi, China. Patients were randomized to receive CCRT + anlotinib (n=36) or CCRT alone (n=37). Acute toxicity and short-term efficacy were evaluated. The most common grade 3 or 4 adverse events were leucopenia [10 (27.7%) vs. 8 (21.6%)], neutropenia [6 (16.7%) vs. 5 (13.5%)] and mucositis [13 (36.1%) vs. 11 (29.7%)] in the CCRT + anlotinib vs. CCRT cohort but there were no significant differences between the two cohorts (P=0.54, P=0.70 and P=0.56, respectively). Two patients (5.6%) displayed grade 1/2 hemorrhage in the CCRT + anlotinib cohort. No patient displayed grade 3/4 hemorrhages or adverse event-associated deaths in any cohort. Complete response rates in the CCRT + anlotinib arm at 1 week and 3 and 6 months post-radiotherapy were 60.0, 91.4, and 97.1%, respectively, compared with 40.5, 81.1 and 91.9% in the CCRT arm but there was no significant difference (P=0.10, P=0.35 and P=0.65, respectively). This interim analysis of the ongoing trial showed that administration of CCRT + anlotinib has acceptable toxicity profiles, good compliance and promising results in patients with LA-NPC. A larger study cohort and a longer follow-up period are needed to confirm therapeutic effectiveness and late toxicity.

Background: To evaluate the effect of highly purified stromal vascular fraction gel (SVFG) combined with advanced platelet-rich fibrin extract (APRFE) in treatment of irradiated skin and soft tissue injury. Methods: The subcutaneous fat and whole blood of 4 rabbits were collected to isolate the SVFG and APRFE, respectively. Forty-eight rabbits were divided into 4 groups to prepare irradiated skin injury models with 25 Gy for 24 hours; corresponding dose were performed subcutaneously injected into wounds. In group A, the rabbits were treated with 0.3 mL APRFE combined with 1 mL SVFG. In group B, the rabbits were treated with 1 mL SVFG. In group C, the rabbits were treated with 0.3 mL APRFE, and group D was treated with 1 mL normal saline. The wound healing was detected on the 2, 5, 9 and 14 d after intervention. The wounds tissue was cut for hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining to observe the structure and Masson staining to observe the collagen content. The expression of CD31 in each group was detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC), the protein and mRNA levels of K19, hypoxia inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), interleukin 8 (IL-8) and interleukin 10 (IL-10) were detected respectively by Western blot (WB) and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) on 7, 14 and 28 d after intervention. Results: It is revealed that wound healing rates from 5 to 14 d in group A was significantly higher than that of control. The wounds healing rates in group B and C were significantly higher than that of control after 12 d. Masson staining results showed that the collagen content in group A was significantly higher than that of the other 3 groups on the 7, 14 and 28 d. The results of IHC showed that the expression of CD31 in group A was significantly higher than that of the other 3 groups on 7, 14 and 28 d. WB and RT-PCR results showed that relative expression levels of K19, HIF-1α, VEGF, IL-10 in group A were significantly higher than that of the other 3 groups on 7, 14 and 28 d. However, the relative expression levels of IL-8 in group A was significantly lower than that of the other 3 groups on 7, 14 and 28 d. Conclusions: SVFG combined with APRFE can promote the repair of irradiated skin and soft tissue injury by accelerating angiogenesis, promoting collagen synthesis and reducing inflammation.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been widely reported to improve the sensitivity of Raman spectra. Ordinarily, the laser is focused on the sample to measure the Raman spectrum. The size of the focused light spot is comparable with that of micro-nano structures, and the number of micro-nano structures contained in the light spot area (defined as duty cycle) will severely affect the spectrum intensity. In this study, flower-like silver nanostructures were fabricated with a soft lyotropic liquid crystal template in order to investigate the effect of duty cycle. They were observed under a scanning electron microscope, and their spectrum enhancement factor was computed with the obtained Raman spectrum. Then, their duty cycles were measured using a SERS substrate at different locations. A formula was derived to represent the relation between the duty cycle of the nanoflowers and the Raman spectral intensity. This work could promote the actual applications of SERS in high-sensitivity spectrum testing.

We discuss theoretically the Goos-Hänchen (GH) shifts of the reflected waves from a cold, inhomogeneous, and magnetized plasma slab by using the invariant imbedding approach. Aiming at the linear and parabolic electron-density profiles, we demonstrate numerically the dependences of the co- and cross-polarized GH shifts on the angle of incidence, external static magnetic field, and the thickness of the plasma slab. The results show that the different electron-density profiles of plasma can result in the very different dependences of the GH shifts on the angle of incidence, external magnetic field, and the slab's thickness; the GH shifts can be switched between the considerably large positive and negative values under certain conditions. Particularly, without altering the structure of the plasma slab, the GH shifts can be manipulated by modifying the angle of incident or the external static magnetic field.
