RESUMO

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) drinking bottles, rubber tires, and concrete are the very common municipal solid wastes, which are usually disposed of at landfills and stockpiles and cause continuous damage to the environment. Some studies have indicated that waste PET can be chemically converted into an additive for improving the overall properties of asphalt pavement incorporating natural aggregates, especially the moisture-induced damage resistance. However, it is not clear whether this PET additive still works for asphalt rubber containing recycled concrete aggregates (RCA). To well reveal this issue, this study first adopted a similar way to chemically recycle waste PET into the additive for modifying crumb rubber modified asphalt (CRMA) binder and then mixed the binder with the 13 mm maximum aggregate stone matrix asphalt containing 100% coarse RCA for preparing the mixtures. After a series of physicochemical characterizations of the PET additive, the moisture resistance, rutting resistance, low-temperature cracking resistance, and fatigue resistance of the mixture were systematically evaluated. The results showed that the PET additive is capable of improving the resistance to moisture and high-temperature deformation of asphalt rubber and helps greatly reduce the moisture-induced damage to the interfacial bonding layer. To be more detailed, the residual Marshall stability (RMS) value of RCA-CRMAM/1PET after 72 h of immersion is higher than 85% by contrast to that of RCA-CRMAM (77.1%), while the tensile strength ratio (TSR) value of RCA-CRMAM/1PET shows more than 80% compared to that of 65.2%. In addition, only 1% PET additive can enhance the high-temperature resistance of asphalt rubber containing RCA to rut and allow it to maintain higher resistance to rut after moisture-induced damage. 1% PET additive can help improve the bearing capacity of RCA-CRMAM under a low-temperature environment and delay its fatigue life at small stresses. Generally, with the successful introduction of PET additives to asphalt rubber containing RCA, more durable and sustainable highway pavement can be produced and applied in practice to alleviate the negative impacts caused by waste PET, waste tire rubber, and waste concrete.

RESUMO

Phylogenetic tools are fundamental to the studies of evolutionary relationships. In this paper, we present Ksak, a novel high-throughput tool for alignment-free phylogenetic analysis. Ksak computes the pairwise distance matrix between molecular sequences, using seven widely accepted k-mer based distance measures. Based on the distance matrix, Ksak constructs the phylogenetic tree with standard algorithms. When benchmarked with a golden standard 16S rRNA dataset, Ksak was found to be the most accurate tool among all five tools compared and was 19% more accurate than ClustalW2, a high-accuracy multiple sequence aligner. Above all, Ksak was tens to hundreds of times faster than ClustalW2, which helps eliminate the computation limit currently encountered in large-scale multiple sequence alignment. Ksak is freely available at https://github.com/labxscut/ksak.

RESUMO

Degradability is a key safety issue when choosing materials for biomedical applications and environmental protection. This factor greatly limits the application of porous carbon in these areas due to the inert and stable nature of carbon network. In this work, this conflict could be well-resolved by rational designing a mesoporous carbon (MC) with biomass as a carbon source. The retained oxygen-containing species simultaneously increase drug adsorption capacity and the degradability of MC. The maximum adsorption quantity for doxorubicin over MC can reach 395.3 mg/g, about 3-fold over carbon nanotubes. The detailed analysis reveals that the degradation of MC occurs via a radical mediated oxidation process. The high electron density feature of MC facilitates the electrophilic addition reaction in the presence of HO. During this process, the carbon network is gradually degraded into fragments, carbon nanodots and ultimately to CO2. This work opens up a new way to fabricate degradable porous materials and provides a promising material for the practical application in biomedical and environmental field.

RESUMO

Rotation of a gear powered by active particles is numerically investigated in a circular chamber. Due to the nonequilibrium properties of active particles, net gear rotation is achieved in a bath composed of self-propelling particles. Our setup can convert the random motion of active particles into the directional rotation of the ratchet gear. The direction of rotation is determined by the asymmetry of the gear and the persistence length (the ratio of the self-propulsion speed to the rotation diffusion coefficient) of active particles. Remarkably, the direction of rotation for large persistence length is opposite to the direction of rotation for small persistence length. Therefore, for a given asymmetric gear, we can observe the rotation reversal when tuning the system parameters (e.g., the self-propulsion speed, the rotation diffusion coefficient, and the packing fraction of active particles). Our findings are relevant to the experimental pursuit of rectifying random motion to directional motion in active matter.

RESUMO

Co-crystallization is an effective strategy to improve the drug properties such as solubility and stability. However, its thermodynamic backgrounds, especially lattice vibration, haven't been fully understood. In this work, indomethacin (IND) cocrystals formed with nicotinamide (NIC) and saccharin (SAC) are successfully characterized by using terahertz spectroscopy. DFT calculations at PBE-D3 level with and without constrained unit cell are performed to predict the absorption peaks at spectral range. The results suggest that the DFT calculations with constrained unit cell achieve a better agreement with experimental observations. Based on the optimized geometries and calculated phonons, the thermodynamic contributions from lattice vibrations to cocrystal formations are further evaluated. The findings reveal that the vibrational energy plays a comparable role with electronic energy, but has an opposite impact on these two cocrystal formations.

RESUMO

We screened 30 Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates from dogs and cats at a single animal hospital in Guangdong Province, China. Among them, 12 K. pneumoniae strains possessed high-level resistance to amikacin and gentamicin and these were screened for 16S rRNA methyltransferase (16S-RMTase) genes. And then the genes positive isolates were detected for ESBLs (extended spectrum ß-lactamases) and analyzed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, multilocus sequence typing, PCR-based replicon typing and plasmid analysis. The genetic profiles of rmtB were also determined by PCR mapping. The twelve 16S-RMTase gene-positive isolates were rmtB (11/30) and armA (2/30) with one isolate carrying both genes. Extended spectrum ß-lactamases genes were represented by blaCTX-M-55 (9/12), blaCTX-M-27 (2/12) and blaCTX-M-14 (1/12). The twelve 16S-RMTase containing strains were grouped into five clonal patterns and ST37 was the most prevalent sequence type. Ten rmtB-bearing plasmids conjugated successfully and all belonged to IncN and IncF (F33:A-:B-) incompatibility groups. Nine of the transconjugants carried a 97 kb plasmid and the other harbored both ∼60 and ∼200 kb plasmids. rmtB and blaCTX-M-55 were present on the same plasmid and indicated the co-transfer of these two genes, with the rmtB gene showing highly relevant relationships with IS26 and Tn3. Our findings suggested a high prevalence of 16S-RMTase genes in K. pneumonia ST37 from dogs and cats. Additional studies are needed to trace the evolutionary path of this type of resistance among the K. pneumonia isolates, and to determine whether they have been transferred to humans.
