RESUMO

The pollution of water bodies by heavy metals (HMs) such as Pb(II) and Cd(II) poses a serious environmental risk. Herein, rice straw biochar (RBC) modified with calcium thioglycolate was used to remove Pb(II) and Cd(II) from aqueous solutions. The adsorption performance of the modified biochar was investigated via adsorption kinetics and isotherm model fitting. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to elucidate the modification and adsorption mechanisms. The results showed that the modification process loaded sulfur-containing functional groups, calcium carbonate, and calcium oxalate crystals on the biochar surface, considerably enhancing its complexation performance and ion-exchange capacity. The equilibrium adsorption amounts for Pb(II) and Cd(II) reached 124.92 and 65.44 mg g-1 in unary systems, respectively; they reached 121.34 and 39.43 mg g-1 in a binary Pb(II) and Cd(II), respectively. Moreover, the optimal adsorption conditions were as follows: pH = 6, temperature = 25 °C, dosage = 0.8 g L-1, and contact time = 2 h. In the binary Pb(II) and Cd(II) system, the adsorption process obeyed the Langmuir competitive adsorption model, which means that one adsorption site on the modified biochar was effective for only one heavy-metal ion, and the modified biochar was more selective for Pb(II) than for Cd(II). The adsorption mechanism, which was dominated by chemisorption, mainly involved complexation, precipitation, ion exchange, and cation-π interactions. Meanwhile, adsorption and desorption experiments indicated that the modified biochar exhibited satisfactory recycling performance, demonstrating its feasibility as an inexpensive and efficient heavy-metal adsorbent for polluted water.

RESUMO

Introduction: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a chronic zoonotic parasitic disease caused by the larvae of the Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) cluster. The current existing drugs have limited therapeutic efficacy against cystic echinococcosis, and thus, there is an urgent need to develop new drugs. Methods: In this study, 7 harmine (HM) derivatives were screened and the effects of HM derivatives on E. granulosus sensu stricto (s.s.) were evaluated by in vitro and mouse experiments. The safety of the HM derivatives was assessed by cytotoxicity assays, acute toxicity study in animals and subacute toxicity study. Results: These results show that the HM derivatives H-2-168 and DH-004 exhibited more significant antiparasitic effects at an initial concentration of 40 µM. The results of further studies showed that H-2-168 and DH-004 had dose-dependent effects against protoscoleces and had satisfactory therapeutic outcomes in vivo. Electron microscopy observations demonstrated that H-2-168 and DH-004 caused severe disruption of the parasite ultrastructure. Notably, the results of the acute toxicity and subchronic toxicity studies showed that H-2-168 and DH-004 had significantly improved safety. In addition, we found that H-2-168 and DH-004 induced DNA damage in E. granulosus s.s., which may be the mechanism by which these drugs produce their therapeutic effects. Discussion: Overall, the data from this work demonstrate that H-2-168 and DH-004 are highly effective candidate compounds with low toxicity for the treatment of CE and will provide a new therapeutic strategy for CE pharmacological treatment.

RESUMO

The application of phosphate fertilizer is an important source of anthropogenic fluoride in agricultural soil. However, relatively few studies have examined the fluoride content of phosphate fertilizers, and that has limited our understanding of the phosphate fertilizer contribution to soil fluoride accumulation and distribution. To examine this problem, we first quantified the total fluoride (TF) and water-soluble fluoride (WF) contents of six of the most commonly used commercial phosphate fertilizers in China (potassium dihydrogen phosphate (MKP), calcium superphosphate (SSP), monoammonium phosphate (MAP), diammonium phosphate (DAP), ternary compound fertilizer (NPK), and water-soluble macroelement fertilizer (WSF)). After calculating the [P2O5]/TF ratio for each of those fertilizers, we used those ratios and the average P2O5 application per crop of five typical crops grown in China (apples, greenhouse vegetables, wheat, corn, and rice) to estimate the annual fluoride accumulations in their soils after application of each type of phosphate fertilizer. Among the six fertilizer types, SSP, DAP, and NPK had much higher total fluoride and water-soluble fluoride contents than MKP, MAP, and WSF had. During crop production, the risk of fluoride accumulation was lower with MKP, MAP, and WSF (high [P2O5]/TF ratios) and higher with SSP, DAP, and NPK (low [P2O5]/TF ratios), especially in cash crops (fruit and greenhouse vegetables), which traditionally have unreasonably high P2O5 applications. Based on our findings, we proposed steps that should be taken to help effectively mitigate fluoride accumulation in China's agricultural soils.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the relationship between the glucocorticoid-induced transcript 1 (GLCCI1) gene variant and the degree of improvement in lung function with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS). METHODS: We searched the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, CBM, CNKI and Wanfang databases to obtain studies on the GLCCI1 rs37973 variant and the efficacy of ICS in asthma. RESULTS: The overall meta-analysis showed that patients with the GG phenotype (mutant homozygotes) exhibited significantly smaller forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV1) change than patients with the AG phenotype (mutant heterozygous) (MD = -0.08, 95% CI [-0.12, -0.03], P = 0.001). Compared with the AA phenotype (wild homozygotes), the GG phenotype (MD = -4.23, 95% CI [-6.09, -2.38], P < 0.00001) and AG phenotype (MD = -1.92, 95% CI [-2.35, -1.49], P < 0.00001) had significantly smaller FEV1%pred changes. The FEV1 change subgroup analysis showed that the GG phenotype group was smaller than the AA phenotype group at 8 (MD = -0.53, 95% CI [-0.91, -0.14], P = 0.007), 12 (MD = -0.16, 95% CI [-0.30, -0.02], P = 0.02) and 24 (MD = -0.09, 95% CI [-0.17, -0.01], P = 0.02) weeks of treatment; the GG phenotype group was smaller than the AG phenotype group at 12 weeks (MD = -0.08, 95% CI [-0.15, -0.01], P = 0.02). CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis suggests that the GLCCI1 rs37973 variant affects the efficacy of ICS and that the presence of the G allele attenuates the improvement in lung function with ICS.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to determine the changes of pathogens in hematological ward and susceptibility of patients received chemotherapy to antibiotics. The pathogens were taken from blood, urine and sputum of patients who accepted chemotherapy from years 2001 to 2005, then were isolated and identified. The susceptibility test was performed by disk diffusion method. The results showed that the total of 418 strains were detected. Gram-negative bacteria were the most common of nosocomial infection. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter cloacae, E. coli account for the most of Gram negative- bacteria infection and most resistant to broad-spectrum penicillin, Acinetobacter baumannii showed a trend of increase. The ratios of gram positive bacteria and fungi were increased slowly, mainly as Enterococcus and Candida. Enterococcus is the most common cause of Gram-positive bacterial infection. Vancomycin resistance did not occur. It is concluded that Gram-negative bacteria are main cause of nosocomial infection in patients with hematological malignancies. Gram positive bacteria and fungi had been more frequent. Strains resistant to antimicrobial agents increase.
