BACKGROUND: Patients with bipolar disorder (BD) show abnormalities in glucolipid metabolism and reproductive hormone levels, which are of concern in women with BD. This study was dedicated to investigating the glucolipid and reproductive hormone levels of female patients, and to preliminarily investigating their relationships with cognition. METHODS: A total of 58 unmedicated female BD patients, 61 stable-medicated female BD patients, and 63 healthy controls (HC) were recruited in this study. Serum glycolipid indexes and reproductive hormones were measured. Cognitive function was assessed using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) and the Stroop Color-Word Test (Stroop test). RESULTS: Patients with BD showed significant cognitive impairment (p < 0.05), which was not affected by medication. Triglycerides (TG), luteinizing hormone (LH), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) were altered in stable-medicated BD patients. In addition, regression analysis showed that progesterone (PRGE) and prolactin (PRL) were negatively associated with cognitive performance in stable-medicated BD patients. CONCLUSIONS: Female BD patients may have cognitive deficits and abnormal levels of glycolipids and reproductive hormones. And abnormal levels of glycolipids and reproductive hormones may be associated with cognitive dysfunction in female BD patients.

BACKGROUND: The study of clinical biological indicators in bipolar disorder (BD) is important. In recent years, basic experiments have associated the pathophysiological mechanism of BD is related to mitochondrial dysfunction, but few clinical studies have confirmed this finding. OBJECT: The present study aimed to evaluate whether plasma circulating cell-free mitochondrial DNA (ccf-mtDNA) levels, which can represent the degree of mitochondrial damage in vivo, are altered in patients with BD in early onset and during treatment compared with controls. METHOD: A total of 75 first-diagnosed drug-naive patients with BD and 60 HCs were recruited and followed up for 1 month. The clinical symptoms were assessed using HAMD, HAMA, and YMRS, and ccf-mtDNA levels were measured by qPCR before and after drug treatment in BD. RESULT: (1) The plasma ccf-mtDNA levels in first-diagnosed drug-naive patients with BD increased compared with those in HCs (p = 0.001). (2) Drug treatment for 1 month can decrease the expression of ccf-mtDNA in BD (p < 0.001). (3) No significant correlation was observed between the changes in ccf-mtDNA levels and the improvement of clinical symptoms in BD after drug treatment. CONCLUSION: The plasma ccf-mtDNA level was increased in BD, and decreased after pharmacological treatment. These outcomes suggested that plasma ccf-mtDNA level is likely to be sensitive to the drug response in BD, and mitochondrial pathway is a potential target for further therapy.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of data shows that schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BD) have substantial metabolic risks; however, few studies have focused on bone metabolism. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and associated influencing factors of low bone mass and osteoporosis in SCZ and BD before pharmacological effects occur. METHODS: 108 healthy controls (HCs) and drug-naïve individuals with SCZ (n = 56) and BD (n = 130) had their lumbar spine (L1-L4) and left femur (Neck/Trochanter/Ward's triangle) bone mineral density (BMD) determined using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Besides, we measured bone turnover markers (BTMs) levels, including procollagen I N-terminal propeptide, osteocalcin, and C-terminal cross-linking telopeptide of type I collagen in different groups. RESULTS: Individuals with SCZ and BD had significantly lower BMD and significantly higher prevalence of low bone mass and osteoporosis compared with HCs. In the main observation regions of the total lumbar (F = 18.368, p < 0.001) and left femur (F = 14.790, p < 0.001), BMD was lower in individuals with SCZ and BD than HCs, with SCZ showing lower BMD than BD. The osteocalcin (H = 11.421, p = 0.003) levels were significantly higher in SCZ and BD than HCs. Binary regression analysis showed that SCZ or BD was an independent risk factor for low bone mass and osteoporosis. In addition, sex, age, and BTMs also influenced the occurrence of low bone mass and osteoporosis. LIMITATIONS: Cross-sectional study. CONCLUSION: The results findings of the study might contribute to our understanding of the increased risk of bone metabolism in SCZ and BD. The basic physical and chemical qualities, nutrition, aroma components, and sensory evaluation of 17 varieties of table grapes were studied. The quality evaluation system of different table grape varieties was preliminarily determined. Our results show that the soluble solid content in Ruby Seedless was 21.17%, which was higher than that of other varieties. The black varieties Aishenmeigui and Sweet Sapphire had the highest total phenol content. Aishenmeigui had high levels of tannin and vitamin C. In addition, the aroma contents in Meixiangbao, Ruby Seedless, and Shine-Muscat were higher than those in other varieties. Manicure Finger and Ruby Seedless had higher levels of C6 compounds. Moreover, the "Kyoho" series of grape Meixiangbao, Sunmmer Black, Jumeigui, Hutai 8 hao, and Black Beet were high in ester content, while Muscat varieties, including Zaoheibao, Aishenmeigui, Jumeigui, and Shine-Muscat were rich in terpene substances. Ruby Seedless, Shine-Muscat, and Heibaladuo had higher comprehensive scores in sensory evaluation. Hence, the comprehensive quality of Shine-Muscat, Ruby Seedless, and Aishenmeigui was better. These results may serve as references for determining the quality differences between table grape varieties.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a common mental disorder characterized by manic and depressive episodes. Mood disorders have been associated with immune dysfunction. The combination of quetiapine and valproate has shown positive effects in treating BD, but the impact on immune dynamics remains less understood. Using single-cell RNA sequencing, we observed that B cells exhibited downregulation of inflammation-related genes, while pro-inflammatory mast and eosinophil cells decreased following treatment. Ribosomal peptide production genes were found to be reduced in both B and T cells after treatment. Additionally, our findings suggest that the combined therapy effectively alleviates inflammation by reducing myloid-mediated immune signaling pathways. This study provides valuable insights into the immune atlas and uncovers a potential mechanism for immune disorder alleviation in patients with BD treated with quetiapine and valproate.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is one of the major symptoms of individuals with bipolar disorder (BD). Purine system disorders may play an important role in cognitive dysfunction. So far, the relationship between cognitive deficits and purinergic metabolism in BD has been seldom discussed in previous studies. This study aims to explore its relevance and potential biological mechanisms. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 205 first time diagnosed drug-naive individuals with BD and 97 healthy volunteers were recruited. The uric acid(UA) level was measured using automatic biochemical analyzer, and cognitive function was assessed by Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) and Stroop color-word test. In addition, general information and clinical symptoms were collected and evaluated. RESULTS: In this study, the UA level of BD group (U = 8475.000, p = 0.038) was found to be significantly higher than that of the healthy controls, but the scores of RBANS (t = -11.302, p < 0.001) and Stroop color-word test (t = -6.962, p < 0.001) were significantly lower than that of the healthy controls. In gender subgroup analysis, females had lower UA level and higher RBANS scores. In correlation analysis, the cognitive function of individuals with BD was found to present a significant negative correlation with UA level in attention (r = -0.23, p = 0.001) and delayed memory(r = -0.16, p = 0.022). LIMITATIONS: This is a cross-sectional design. CONCLUSION: Elevated UA levels may be a potential mechanism of cognitive impairment in BD. This provides a new possible strategy for the prevention and treatment of cognitive impairment in BD.

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiological mechanism of cognitive impairments of bipolar disorder (BD) has not yet been completely revealed. It is well known that Vitamin D and physical activity (PA) are associated with BD. However, specific links between Vitamin D and cognitive deficits in BD are still unclear. METHOD: The serum levels of vitamin D were measured. The cognitive performances of 102 first-diagnosed and drug-naïve BD patients were evaluated for analysis. The repeatable battery for the assessment of neuropsychological status (RBANS) and the Stroop Color-Word test was used in this study. PA was collected by international physical activity questionnaire. RESULT: Patients with BD had high levels of serum vitamin D. Furthermore, immediate and delayed memory was negatively associated with vitamin D levels in patients' group. The serum levels of vitamin D in patients with low PA were positively associated with memory. However, increased PA attenuated the protective effect of vitamin D on executive cognition. CONCLUSION: It is concluded that the increased levels of vitamin D were observed in the serum of patients with BD. Thus, it is found that more PA is less beneficial to cognition of patients with BD than longer resting.

This study employed various methods, including recording of phenological phenomena and analysis of physicochemical indicators, to scrutinize effects of strigolactone and abscisic acid on indicators of ripeness, phenolic compounds, and antioxidant activity. 50 µM GR24 (strigolactone analog), 200 µM ABA (abscisic acid), 50 µM GR24 + 200 µM ABA, and 200 µM ABA + 10 µM TIS108 (strigolactone-biosynthesis inhibitor) were employed in E-L34 and E-L35. Samples were collected from E-L34 to E-L38. Each treatment could improve sugar contents and reduce acid contents, especially in the ABA + TIS group whose contents were 1 °brix higher and 1.11 g/L lower than the control group. Additionally, the ABA and ABA + TIS groups could significantly contribute to phenolic accumulation, especially anthocyanins which were increased by at least 1.5 mg/g at each stage. However, the ABA + GR group had some inhibitory effects on ripening. Therefore, this study can lay a foundation for precisely applying exogenous ABA and GR24.

The study is based on a longitudinal evaluation of the public, during the initial COVID-19 outbreak in China and 8 months after. It aimed to explore the changes in the mental health of the public at the beginning of the pandemic and during the regular epidemic prevention and control. An online survey questionnaire was used to collect data during the initial COVID-19 outbreak (February 10, 2020-February 18, 2020; T1) and 8 months after the outbreak (October 21, 2020-December 29, 2020; T2). Psychological distress was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (PCL-5). A chi-square test was used to compare the changes in the depression and anxiety scores at T1 and T2, and the correlation between symptoms was analyzed through Spearman's rank correlation. In T1, 1,200 people were recruited, while 168 people responded in T2. Depression (48.2-31.0%; p=0.001) and anxiety (17.9-9.5%; p = 0.026) symptoms decreased over time; two participants developed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in T2. The scores of the PHQ-9 scale and the SAS scale were both positively correlated with the score of the PCL-5 scale and negatively correlated with sleep time. During the COVID-19 pandemic, part of the general population's anxiety and depression significantly reduced with time, and they rarely developed PTSD. PTSD occurrence was related to severe depression and anxiety.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the metabolic abnormalities associated with bipolar disorder (BD) have attracted people's attention. However, clinical studies on bone metabolism in individuals with BD are unavailable. This study was designed to assess biochemical indexes of bone metabolism and related influencing factors. METHODS: We measured bone turnover markers (BTMs), including procollagen Ⅰ N-terminal propeptide (PⅠNP), osteocalcin (OC) and C-terminal cross-linking telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX-I), and index of calcium and phosphorus metabolism in 100 drug-naïve individuals with BD (DSM-5) and 91 healthy volunteers. Besides, sociodemographic and clinical assessment were collected. Between-group comparisons and within subgroup analysis were performed. RESULTS: The PⅠNP (t = 3.715, p < 0.001), OC (t = 2.117, p = 0.036), parathyroid hormone (PTH, t = 3.877, p < 0.001), vitamin D (t = 2.065, p = 0.041), insulin (t = 4.208, p < 0.001) and insulin resistance (t = 2.888, p = 0.004) levels in the drug-naive BD group was significantly higher than those in the healthy control (HC) group. The level of calcium (t = -2.124, p = 0.035) in the drug-naive BD group was significantly lower than that of the HC group. But OC and vitamin D loses statistical significance after Bonferroni correction. However, there was no significant difference in the CTX-I level between the two groups. There are gender differences in the level of BMTs in individuals with BD, but this phenomenon was not found in the HC subgroup. It is shown that diagnosed BD, gender, age and BMI may affect the PINP levels through multiple linear regression analysis. CONCLUSION: The biochemical indexes of bone metabolism in drug-naive individuals with BD were more active than that of the healthy controls in a sample from the Chinese Han nationality. The finding provides new evidence for our understanding of bone metabolism in individuals with BD.

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive impairment and abnormal glycolipid metabolism are common clinical features of bipolar disorder (BD). The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between conventional glycolipid metabolism indicators and cognitive impairment in patients with BD. METHODS: A total of 132 drug-naïve patients with BD and 129 healthy controls (HC) were recruited in the study. Five serum glycolipid metabolism indicators were measured and cognitive function was assessed using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) and the Stroop Color-Word Test (Stroop test) for each participant. RESULTS: The scores of immediate memory, attention, language and delayed memory in BD group were significantly lower than those in HC group (P < 0.05). The triglyceride (TG) level in BD group was higher than that in HC group (P = 0.011), and the total cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) levels were lower than those in HC group (P = 0.026; P = 0.001). Regression analysis showed that TG level was significantly correlated with RBANS total score (ß = 0.245, P = 0.008), attention (ß = 0.289, P = 0.03) and delayed memory (ß = 0.221, P = 0.023). Fasting blood glucose (FBG) level was significantly correlated with language subscale score (ß = -0.187, P = 0.046) in BD. LIMITATIONS: Cross-sectional design and limited control variables. CONCLUSIONS: Elevated FBG and TG levels may be associated with cognitive dysfunction in BD patients. Improving glycolipid metabolism in patients with BD may help to improve certain domain-specific cognitive functions.

Background: Discriminating between major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) remains challenging and cognitive deficits in MDD and BD are generally recognized. In this study, the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) approach was performed to explore neural activity and cognition in first-episode, drug-naïve BD and MDD patients, as well as the relationship between altered fALFF values and clinical or psychometric variables. Methods: A total of 21 BD patients, 25 MDD patients, and 41 healthy controls (HCs) completed clinical assessments and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) scans in this study. The rs-fMRI data were analyzed by fALFF method and Pearson correlation analyses were performed between altered fALFF values and clinical variables or cognition. Support vector machine (SVM) was adopted to identify the three groups from each other with abnormal fALFF values in the brain regions obtained by group comparisons. Results: (1) The fALFF values were significantly different in the frontal lobe, temporal lobe, and left precuneus among three groups. In comparison to HCs, BD showed increased fALFF values in the right inferior temporal gyrus (ITG) and decreased fALFF values in the right middle temporal gyrus, while MDD showed decreased fALFF values in the right cerebellar lobule IV/V. In comparison to MDD, BD showed decreased fALFF values in bilateral posterior cingulate gyrus and the right cerebellar lobule VIII/IX. (2) In the BD group, a negative correlation was found between increased fALFF values in the right ITG and years of education, and a positive correlation was found between decreased fALFF values in the right cerebellar lobule VIII/IX and visuospatial abilities. (3) The fALFF values in the right cerebellar lobule VIII/IX may have the ability to discriminate BD patients from MDD patients, with sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy all over 0.70. Conclusions: Abnormal brain activities were observed in BD and MDD and were related with cognition in BD patients. The abnormality in the cerebellum can be potentially used to identify BD from MDD patients.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe mental illness that affects more than 1% the world's population with high recurrence rates and a series of comorbidities. Cognitive dysfunction is an endophenotype of BD, but sex influences in cognitive impairment remains unclear. METHOD: We evaluated the performance of 139 patients with first-diagnosed, drug-naïve BD (44 males and 95 females) and 92 healthy controls (24 males and 68 females) using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) scale and the Stroop color-word test. RESULT: Immediate memory, visuospatial/constructional ability, language, attention, delayed memory, total RBANS score, and Stroop color-word scores were significantly lower in patients with first-diagnosed, drug-naïve BD than healthy participants. Thus, male patients had worse attention and delayed memory scores compared with female patients with BD. Importantly, a worse performance in visuospatial/constructional ability was negatively associated with the Young Mania Rating Scale score in male patients only. CONCLUSION: Male patients with first-diagnosed, drug-naïve bipolar disorder had worse cognitive dysfunction than female patients in attention and delayed memory. Cognitive deficits were correlated with mania severity only in male patients. These findings reveal the sexual dimorphism in the cognitive deficits of early BD patients with mild and moderated symptoms for further pathophysiological exploration.

Drought stress can significantly affect the growth and yield of grapevine. The application of exogenous strigolactone can relieve the drought symptoms of grapevine; however, little is known about the transcription levels in grapevine under drought stress following exogenous strigolactone application. The mitigative effect of exogenous strigolactone on grapevine leaves under drought stress was studied by transcriptome analysis based on RNA sequencing. On the 10th day of drought stress, the strigolactone treatment group had a higher relative water content and lower electrical conductivity, which significantly alleviated the drought damage. Compared to the drought (D) group, a total of 5955 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) (2966 up-regulated genes and 2989 down-regulated genes) were detected in the exogenous strigolactone (DG) groups. Based on Gene Ontology analysis, the DEGs in the D and DG treatments were enriched in the processes of photosynthesis and organic acid catabolism. Pathway analysis showed that the DEGs in the D and DG treatments were enriched in carbon metabolism, ribosome, starch and sucrose metabolism, flavonoid biosynthesis, and circadian rhythm. Additionally, in the DG group, the antioxidant enzyme genes of CAT1, GSHPX1, GSHPX2, POD42, APX6, and SODCP were up-regulated, two NAC, three WRKY, and four MYB transcription factor genes were down-regulated, and the key gene of strigolactone synthesis D14 was up-regulated, compared with that in the D group. The results provide a new perspective for studying the adaptation of plants to drought stress.

BACKGROUND: High-density conditions are global issues that threaten the sustainable management of plantations throughout the world. Monocultures and untimely management practices have identically resulted in the simplex of community structures, decreases in biodiversity, and long-term productivity losses in plantations China. The most popular measure which is commonly used to address these issues is thinning, which potentially results in increases in the development of understory plants in plantations. However, there is limited information currently available regarding the community composition of understory vegetation and the associated environmental factors, which has limited the sustainable management of China's fir plantation ecosystems. METHOD: In the present study, a thinning experiment was implemented which included a control check (CK: no thinning), as well as low intensity thinning (LIT: 20%), moderate intensity thinning (MIT: 33%), and high intensity thinning (HIT: 50%) in Chinese fir plantations located in the Southeastern China. During the investigation process, the understory vegetation examined three years after thinning measures were completed, in order to analyze the impacts of different thinning intensities on the growth and community composition of the understory plants. At the same time, the associated environmental factors in the fir plantations were also investigated. RESULTS: The species richness, total coverage, and biomass of the understory vegetation were observed to be apparently increased with increasing thinning intensity. In addition, it was found that the thinning measures had prominently influenced the soil nutrients. The community compositions of the understory vegetation were significantly different among the four thinning intensity levels, especially between the CK and the HIT. Furthermore, the development of the understory vegetation was found to be significantly correlated with the soil nutrient contents, and the community compositions of the understory vegetation were prominently driven by the tree densities, slope positions, and soil nutrient contents.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi play an important role in plant-fungi communities. It remains a central question of how the AM fungal community changes as plants grow. To establish an understanding of AM fungal community dynamics associated with Chinese fir, Chinese fir with five different growth stages were studied and 60 root samples were collected at the Jiangle National Forestry Farm, Fujian Province. A total of 76 AM fungal operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were identified by high-throughput sequencing on an Illumina Miseq platform. The genera covered by OTUs were Glomus, Archaeospora, Acaulospora, Gigaspora and Diversispora. Glomus dominated the community in the whole stage. The number and composition of OTUs varied along with the host plant growth. The number of OTUs showed an inverted V-shaped change with the host plant age, and the maximum occurred in 23-year. Overall, the basic species diversity and richness in this study were stable. Non-metric multi-dimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis based on bray-curtis distance revealed that there were remarkable differentiations between the 9-year and other stages. Besides, AM fungal community in 32-year had a significant difference with that of 23-year, while no significant difference with that of 45-year, suggesting that 32-year may be a steady stage for AM fungi associated with Chinese fir. The cutting age in 32-year may be the most favorable for microbial community. The pH, total N, total P, total K, available N, available P, available K, organic matter and Mg varied as the Chinese fir grows. According to Mantel test and redundancy analysis, available N, available P, K and Mg could exert significant influence on AM fungal communities, and these variables explained 31% of variance in the composition of AM fungal communities.

An alcohol/salt aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) composed of 1-propanol and (NH4)2SO4 was employed to purify anthraquinones (AQs) extracted from Aloe vera L. The main influencing system parameters such as type of alcohol, type and concentration of salt, temperature and pH were investigated in detail. Under the optimal extraction conditions, AQs can be extracted into alcohol-rich phase with high extraction efficiency, meanwhile majority polysaccharides, proteins, mineral substances and other impurities were extracted into salt-rich phase. Partitioning of AQs is dependent on hydrophobic interaction, hydrogen bond interaction, and salting-out effect in ATPS. Temperature also played a great role in the partitioning. After ATPS extraction, alcohol can be recycled by evaporation; moreover, salt can be recycled by dilution crystallization method. Compared with other liquid-liquid extractions, this alcohol/salt system is much simpler, lower in cost with easier recovery of phase-forming components, which has the potential scale-up in down-processing of active ingredients in plant.
