RESUMO

The pathogenesis of anorexia nervosa (AN) has been hypothesized to involve several biological systems. However, reliable biomarkers for AN have yet to be established. This study was aimed to identify statistically significant and clinically meaningful peripheral biomarkers associated with AN. A systematic literature search was conducted to identify studies published in English from inception until 30 June 2022. We conducted two-level random-effects meta-analyses to examine the difference between AN and comparison groups across 52 distinct biomarkers and found that acylated ghrelin, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), carboxy-terminal collagen crosslinks (CTX), cholesterol, cortisol, des-acyl ghrelin, ghrelin, growth hormone (GH), obestatin, and soluble leptin receptor levels were significantly higher in cases of AN compared with those in non-AN controls. Conversely, C-reactive protein (CRP), CD3 positive, CD8, creatinine, estradiol, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), free thyroxine, free triiodothyronine, glucose, insulin, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), leptin, luteinizing hormone, lymphocyte, and prolactin levels were significantly lower in AN compared with those in non-AN controls. Our findings indicate that peripheral biomarkers may be linked to the pathophysiology of AN, such as processes of adaptation to starvation. Scientific investigation into peripheral biomarkers may ultimately yield breakthroughs in personalized clinical care for AN.

Substantial progress has been made in the understanding of anorexia nervosa (AN) and eating disorder (ED) genetics through the efforts of large-scale collaborative consortia, yielding the first genome-wide significant loci, AN-associated genes, and insights into metabo-psychiatric underpinnings of the disorders. However, the translatability, generalizability, and reach of these insights are hampered by an overly narrow focus in our research. In particular, stereotypes, myths, assumptions and misconceptions have resulted in incomplete or incorrect understandings of ED presentations and trajectories, and exclusion of certain patient groups from our studies. In this review, we aim to counteract these historical imbalances. Taking as our starting point the Academy for Eating Disorders (AED) Truth #5 "Eating disorders affect people of all genders, ages, races, ethnicities, body shapes and weights, sexual orientations, and socioeconomic statuses", we discuss what we do and do not know about the genetic underpinnings of EDs among people in each of these groups, and suggest strategies to design more inclusive studies. In the second half of our review, we outline broad strategic goals whereby ED researchers can expand the diversity, insights, and clinical translatability of their studies. Catalytic conversion of NO has long been a focus of atmospheric pollution control and diesel vehicle exhaust treatment. Rhodium is one of the most effective metals for catalyzing NO reduction, and understanding the nature of the active sites and underlying mechanisms can help improve the design of Rh-based catalysts towards NO reduction. In this work, we investigated the detailed catalytic mechanisms for the direct reduction of NO to N2 by fullerene-supported rhodium clusters, C60Rh4+, with density functional theory calculations. We found that the presence of C60 facilitates the smooth reduction of NO into N2 and O2, as well as their subsequent desorption, recovering the catalyst C60Rh4+. Such a process fails to be completed by free Rh4+, emphasizing the critical importance of C60 support. We attribute the novel performance of C60Rh4+ to the electron sponge effect of C60, providing useful guidance for designing efficient catalysts for the direct reduction of NO.

ConspectusBuckminsterfullerene, C60, was discovered through a prominent mass peak containing 60 atoms produced from laser vaporization of graphite, driven by Kroto's interest in understanding the formation mechanisms of carbon-containing molecules in space. Inspired by the geodesic dome-shaped architecture designed by Richard Buckminster Fuller, after whom the particle was named, C60 was found to have a football-shaped structure comprising 20 hexagons and 12 pentagons. It sparked worldwide interest in understanding this new carbon allotrope, resulting in the awarding of the Noble Prize in Chemistry to Smalley, Kroto, and Curl in 1996.Intrinsically, C60 is an exceptional species because of its high stability and electron-accepting ability and its structural tunability by decorating or substituting either on its exterior surface or interior hollow cavity. For example, metal-decorated fullerene complexes have found important applications ranging from superconductivity, nanoscale electronic devices, and organic photovoltaic cells to catalysis and biomedicine. Compared to the large body of studies on atoms and molecules encapsulated by C60, studies on the exteriorly modified fullerenes, i.e., exohedral fullerenes, are scarcer. Surprisingly, to date, uncertainty exists about a fundamental question: what is the preferable exterior binding site of different kinds of single atoms on the C60 surface?In recent years, we have developed an experimental protocol to synthesize the desired fullerene-metal clusters and to record their infrared spectra via messenger-tagged infrared multiple photon dissociation spectroscopy. With complementary quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamics simulations, we determined that the most probable binding site of a metal, specifically a vanadium cation, on C60 is above a pentagonal center in an η5 fashion. We explored the bonding nature between C60 and V+ and revealed that the high thermal stability of this cluster originates from large orbital and electrostatic interactions. Through comparing the measured infrared spectra of [C60-Metal]+ with the observational Spitzer data of several fullerene-rich planetary nebulae, we proposed that the complexes formed by fullerene and cosmically abundant metals, for example, iron, are promising carriers of astronomical unidentified spectroscopic features. This opens the door for a real consideration of Kroto's 30-year-old hypothesis that complexes involving cosmically abundant elements and C60 exhibit strong charge-transfer bands, similar to those of certain unidentified astrophysical spectroscopic features. We compiled a VibFullerene database and extracted a set of vibrational frequencies and intensities for fullerene derivatives to facilitate their potential detection by the James Webb Space Telescope. In addition, we showed that upon infrared irradiation C60V+ can efficiently catalyze water splitting to generate H2. This finding is attributed to the novel geometric-electronic effects of C60, acting as "hydrogen shuttle" and "electron sponge", which illustrates the important role of carbon-based supports in single-atom catalysts. Our work not only unveils the basic structures and bonding nature of fullerene-metal clusters but also elucidates their potential importance in astrophysics, astrochemistry, and catalysis, showing the multifaceted character of this class of clusters. More exciting and interesting aspects of the fullerene-metal clusters, such as ultrafast charge-transfer dynamics between fullerene and metal and their relevance to designing hybrid fullerene-metal junctions for electronic devices, are awaiting exploration.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: NLRP3 inflammasome plays a key role in vascular inflammation and atherosclerosis. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are involved in disease development by regulating gene expression, and have emerged as promising novel disease biomarkers. This study aimed to identify the NLRP3 inflammasome-associated circRNA biomarkers of carotid atherosclerosis. METHODS: Based on the differential expression profiles of circRNAs in patients with carotid artery plaque (CAP) and healthy controls, hsa_circ_0043621, hsa_circ_0051995, and hsa_circ_0123388 were screened and validated using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Potential circRNA-miRNA-mRNA interactions were explored using a luciferase assay. The biological roles of the validated circRNAs were investigated in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) using Western blotting, transwell, and CCK-8 assays. Clinical significance was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The expression levels of all candidate circRNAs were significantly higher in patients with CAP than in controls (p<0.05), which was consistent with the results of the microarray analysis. Overexpression of hsa_circ_0043621 significantly increased the expression of NLRP3, induced migration of HUVECs, and inhibited cell proliferation. hsa_circ_0043621 demonstrated reasonable diagnostic accuracy for CAP detection and increased intima-media thickness (IMT). hsa_circ_0043621 upregulation was an independent predictor of an increased risk of CAP and increased IMT. CONCLUSIONS: hsa_circ_0043621 is a valuable circulating biomarker of carotid atherosclerosis and may contribute to its pathogenesis by regulating the NLRP3 inflammasome.

Law enforcement is a stressful occupation that places significant psychological demands on those serving in this role. However, little is known about the severity of work-related stress and psychological distress among law enforcement officers (LEOs) in North Carolina (NC). This cross-sectional study examined the severity of work-related stress and psychological distress among 283 LEOs in NC. The Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Operational Police Stress Questionnaire, the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale, and the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Checklist were used to assess burnout, operational police stress, depression, anxiety, stress, and PTSD among LEOs. Descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, Mann-Whitney U tests, one-way ANOVA, and Kruskal-Wallis tests were performed. Rural and male LEOs reported higher burnout levels related to depersonalization (i.e., increased mental distance from one's job) compared with their urban and female counterparts. LEOs exposed to toxic materials or performing patrol duties exhibited higher operational police stress levels than those who did not. Caucasian LEOs exhibited higher depression, anxiety, and stress than their African American counterparts. Rural LEOs and LEOs who were exposed to toxic materials displayed higher levels of PTSD than their counterparts. Our findings highlight the need for increased mental health support and better working environments for LEOs.

There is an association between emotional eating and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors; however, little is known about this association in the police force. This study explores the associations between emotional eating and CVD risk factors in law enforcement officers in North Carolina. Four hundred and five officers completed The Emotional Eating Scale, and 221 of them completed the assessment for CVD-related markers. Descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and multiple linear regression analyses were performed. Emotional eating in response to anger was significantly positively associated with body weight (ß = 1.51, t = 2.07, p = 0.04), diastolic blood pressure (ß = 0.83, t = 2.18, p = 0.03), and mean arterial pressure (ß = 0.84, t = 2.19, p = 0.03) after adjusting for age and use of blood pressure medicine. Emotional eating in response to depression was significantly positively associated with triglycerides (ß = 5.28, t = 2.49, p = 0.02), while the emotional eating in response to anxiety was significantly negatively associated with triglycerides (ß = -11.42, t = -2.64, p = 0.01), after adjusting for age and use of cholesterol medicine. Our findings offer new insights to address emotional eating and lower CVD risk in law enforcement officers.

Understanding the active sites and reaction mechanisms of Ni-based catalysts, such as Ni/Al2O3, toward methane is a prerequisite for improving their rational design. Here, the gas-phase reactivity of NiAlO3+ cations toward CH4 is studied using mass spectrometry combined with density functional theory. Similar to our previous study on NiAl2O4+, we find evidence for the formation of both the methyl radical (CH3•) and formaldehyde (CH2O). The first step for methane activation is hydrogen atom abstraction by the terminal oxygen radical Ni(O)2AlO• from methane forming a [Ni(O)2AlOH+, •CH3] complex and leaving the Ni-oxidation state unchanged. The second C-H bond is subsequently activated by the association of a bridged Ni-O2--Al. The oxidation state of the Ni atom is reduced from +3 to +1 during the formation of formaldehyde. Compared to Al2O3+/CH4 and YAlO3+/CH4 systems, the Ni-atom substitution increases the overall reaction rate by roughly an order of magnitude and yields a CH3•/CH2O branching ratio of 0.62/0.38. The present study provides molecular-level insights into the highly efficient gas-phase reaction mechanism contributing to an improved understanding of methane conversion by Ni/Al2O3 catalysts.

Metal-containing clusters have attracted increasing attention over the past 2-3 decades. This intense interest can be attributed to the fact that these discrete metal aggregates, whose atomically precise structures are resolved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), often possess intriguing geometrical features (high symmetry, aesthetically pleasing shapes and architectures) and fascinating physical properties, providing invaluable opportunities for the intersection of different disciplines including chemistry, physics, mathematical geometry and materials science. In this review, we attempt to reinterpret and connect these fascinating clusters from the perspective of Platonic and Archimedean solid characteristics, focusing on highly symmetrical and complex metal-containing (metal = Al, Ti, V, Mo, W, U, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, Au, lanthanoids (Ln), and actinoids) high-nuclearity clusters, including metal-oxo/hydroxide/chalcogenide clusters and metal clusters (with metal-metal binding) protected by surface organic ligands, such as thiolate, phosphine, alkynyl, carbonyl and nitrogen/oxygen donor ligands. Furthermore, we present the symmetrical beauty of metal cluster structures and the geometrical similarity of different types of clusters and provide a large number of examples to show how to accurately describe the metal clusters from the perspective of highly symmetrical polyhedra. Finally, knowledge and further insights into the design and synthesis of unknown metal clusters are put forward by summarizing these "star" molecules.

AIM: To assess the relationship between waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and the incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D)/impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and to explore to what extent these associations are mediated by blood pressure, lipids and other indicators related to liver and kidney metabolism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was based on a functional community cohort included 6109 participants which were divided into two sub-cohorts. One sub-cohort included participants with normal fasting glucose (n = 5563), another included IFG individuals at baseline (n = 546). Cox regression models were used to evaluate the relationships of WHtR with T2D/IFG. Four-year time-dependent receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and area under curve (AUC) were calculated to estimate the discriminatory power of WhtR and other anthropometric indices on T2D. Mediation analysis was performed to estimate which risk factors mediate the association between WHtR and T2D. RESULTS: Significant positive associations were found between WHtR and the incidence of T2D/IFG in both sub-cohort. WhtR was a useful predictor of T2D (P < 0.05). Mediation analysis showed that HOMA-IR (0.45 %), SBP (5.10 %), triglycerides (11.02 %), creatinine (9.36 %) and combined kidney indicators (17.48 %) partly mediated the effect of WHtR on T2D in men. For women, this association was partly mediated by SBP (13.86 %), HDL (24.54 %), ALT (6.29 %), UA (22.58 %) and combined kidney indicators (39.51 %). CONCLUSIONS: WHtR was an independent risk factor for the development of T2D and IFG. This association was partly mediated by HOMA-IR, SBP, lipids and other liver and kidney metabolism indicators.

Elevated serum uric acid (SUA) is associated with the incidence of hypertension, but whether relevant metabolic factors have mediating effects is not certain. Our study was based on a functional community cohort established in Beijing. In 2015, a total of 7482 individuals without hypertension were recruited and followed up until 2019. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the association between SUA and hypertension. Cross-lagged panel analysis and mediation analysis were used to explore the effects of metabolic factors on the association between SUA and incident hypertension. During the average 4-year follow-up, the cumulative incidence of hypertension was 10.9% (n = 580). SUA was an independent risk factor for hypertension, and the RRs (95% CI) for subjects with baseline SUA levels in quartile 2, quartile 3 and quartile 4 were 1.20 (0.88-1.63), 1.50 (1.10-2.05), and 1.57 (1.11-2.22) compared to those in quartile 1, respectively. The cross-lagged panel analysis showed that the increases in Cr, TG, LDL, ALT, AST and WBC occurred after SUA increased (P < 0.001). Among these factors, TG, WBC and ALT played an intermediary role in both men (TG: 14.76%; WBC: 11.61%; ALT: 15.93%) and women (TG: 14.55%; WBC: 8.55%; ALT: 6.89%). The elevated SUA concentration was an independent risk factor for hypertension in the Chinese population, and TG, WBC and ALT had important mediating effects on the association between SUA and hypertension.

Air pollution was considered one of the main causes linked to increased morbidity and mortality around the world. This study aimed to estimate the effect of air pollutants on daily death in Baotou city of Inner Mongolia. Daily deaths data were provided by Baotou Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the years 2015-2019 (Baotou CDC). The air pollutants, PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, CO and maximum 8-h average concentrations of O3, came from the eight environmental monitoring stations in Baotou city. Time-series plots were used to exploit the trend of air pollutants at calendar time. Generalized additive model was used to estimate the effect of air pollutants on daily death. Restricted cubic spline was employed to investigate non-line relationships between air pollutants and daily death. After adjusting the meteorological factors, non-accidental daily deaths were related to PM2.5 (ER = 0.074%) and PM10 (ER = 0.023%), respectively. In stratified analysis, population aged over 65 years and females were more sensitive to air pollutants exposure and warm season might make people more susceptible to air pollutants compared with cold season. PM2.5 and PM10 increase the risk of non-accidental and cardiovascular daily death, but not respiratory daily death.

Dental esthetic restoration covers from facial esthetics to dental esthetics, from the realization of macroscopic to microscopic esthetic restoration goals. As an esthetic restorative dentist, he has to face and solve the increasingly high diagnosis and treatment needs of patients, the increasingly standardized needs of the dental industry, and the need for oral health to become an important part of the Healthy China strategy. Dentists engaged in esthetic restoration field should establish a concept and practice system of global esthetic restoration centered on esthetic diagnosis, interdisciplinary esthetic restoration as a means, and characterized by fine microscopic restoration. Dental esthetic restoration dentists should be the designer of esthetic restoration plans and treatment plans, as well as the implementers of the final esthetic effect. Dentists should accurately grasp the global diagnosis concept and practice system of esthetic restoration, and provide standardized and high-quality oral diagnosis and treatment services for more patients.

This clinical report describes the immediate implant placement and restoration for a 47-yearold woman with a protruded and loose maxillary right central incisor. The treatment included minimally invasive extraction, flapless immediate implant placement using a fully guided surgical template, and immediate implant-supported provisionalisation. The interim anatomical prosthesis was fabricated in advance based on preoperative CBCT scans, and the digital technique made it possible to integrate data precisely from different sources. After 6 months of provisionalisation, satisfactory gingival aesthetic and functional improvements were achieved, followed by a definitive screw-retained zirconia restoration. Thus, application of a complete digital workflow could reduce chairside time and create an optimal emergence profile that matches the residual bone architecture of the extraction sites with minimal interference.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) combined with hypertension has a higher risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between the surrogate indicators of insulin resistance (TyG, TG/HDL, and Mets-IR) with the risk of T2D combined with hypertension. METHODS: This study is based on a functional community cohort from Beijing and the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, comprising 4234 and 4658 participants respectively. Cox proportional hazards models and restricted cubic spline regression were performed to assess the link between TyG, TG/HDL, and Mets-IR with T2D combined with hypertension. The cross-lagged panel analysis and the mediation analysis were used to examine the temporal relationship between insulin resistance and obesity and their temporal relationship with follow-up T2D combined with hypertension. RESULTS: In multivariable-adjusted models, higher TyG was associated with a higher risk of developing T2D combined with hypertension, the hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) were 3.46 (2.43-4.93) and 2.02 (1.67-2.44), in two cohorts respectively. A similar positive association was shown for Mets-IR, the hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) were 1.04 (1.03-1.06) and 1.05 (1.03-1.07), in two cohorts respectively. However, the association between TG/HDL with T2D combined with hypertension was different in two cohorts. The restricted cubic spline regression showed a linear association between TyG and T2D combined with hypertension (P-nonlinear > 0.05). The cross-lagged path coefficient from baseline BMI to follow-up TyG index was significantly greater than the path coefficient from baseline TyG to follow-up BMI. TyG partially mediated the effect of BMI on the risk of T2D combined with hypertension and the percentage of mediated association was estimated at 41.58% and 48.41% in two cohorts, respectively. CONCLUSION: These findings indicated positive associations between TyG and Mets-IR with the risk of T2D combined with hypertension in two cohorts. In addition, BMI change may precede TyG index change, and the TyG index plays a mediating role in BMI induced T2D combined with hypertension.

BACKGROUND: With programmed death-1 (PD-1) inhibitors becoming the standard treatment for lung cancer, PD-1-related adverse reactions and treatment have gradually become prominent. CASE SUMMARY: First reported case of tislelizumab-related enteritis successfully treated with adalimumab 40mg every 2 wk for 3 times in an advanced lung cancer patient who received first-line tislelizumab/pemetrexed/carboplatin for 4 cycles. The patient continued receiving the treatment of pemetrexed/carboplatin after symptoms, abdominal computed tomography and colonoscopy improved, significant diarrhea was not occurred. CONCLUSION: Adalimumab can be an effective treatment option for patients with PD-1 antibody related enteritis if they do not respond well to glucocorticoid treatment.

We present innovative research practices in psychiatric genetic studies to ensure representation of individuals from diverse ancestry, sex assigned at birth, gender identity, age, body shape and size, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Due to histories of inappropriate and harmful practices against marginalized groups in both psychiatry and genetics, people of certain identities may be hesitant to participate in research studies. Yet their participation is essential to ensure diverse representation, as it is incorrect to assume that the same genetic and environmental factors influence the risk for various psychiatric disorders across all demographic groups. We present approaches developed as part of the Eating Disorders Genetics Initiative (EDGI), a study that required tailored approaches to recruit diverse populations across many countries. Considerations include research priorities and design, recruitment and study branding, transparency, and community investment and ownership. Ensuring representation in participants is costly and funders need to provide adequate support to achieve diversity in recruitment in prime awards, not just as supplemental afterthoughts. The need for diverse samples in genetic studies is critical to minimize the risk of perpetuating health disparities in psychiatry and other health research. Although the EDGI strategies were designed specifically to attract and enroll individuals with eating disorders, our approach is broadly applicable across psychiatry and other fields.

Chinese Jiang-flavor Baijiu is the most widely consumed liquor. Jiang-flavor Daqu, a fermentation starter, is important sources of key flavors of Jiang-flavor Baijiu. Some microbes play significant roles in flavor formation of Daqu. In order to clarify the microbial population that promotes the formation of Daqu flavor, we use high throughput sequencing technology combined with headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to investigate microbial population and volatile compounds in Jiang-flavor Daqu. In addition, the dynamic changes of physicochemical factors and enzyme activities in Jiang-flavor Daqu were investigated. Correlations between microbial population, volatile compounds, physicochemical factors, and enzyme activities of Jiang-flavor Daqu were disclosed by redundancy analysis and Spearman correlation analysis. A total of 66 volatile compounds were identified and 14 primary microorganisms were selected. Results showed that high temperature environment could promote the formation of acids, aldehydes and ketones, phenols, furans by affecting the growth of Monascus, Trichomonascus, Cutaneotrichosporon, Wallemia, Millerozyma, Nigrospora, Cladosporium, Bacillus, and Pediococcus in the early fermentation stage. While high nitrogen environment was more suitable for the growth of Virgibacillus and Kroppenstedtia, who could promote the formation of pyrazines in the late fermentation stage. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: This study has provided a scientific basis for the directed regulation of Daqu fermentation through physicochemical factors, developed scientific basis for artificially constructing Daqu microbial population and obtaining an easy-to-operate, reproducible fermentation system for Daqu production.

Substantial progress has been made in the understanding of anorexia nervosa (AN) and eating disorder (ED) genetics through the efforts of large-scale collaborative consortia, yielding the first genome-wide significant loci, AN-associated genes, and insights into metabo-psychiatric underpinnings of the disorders. However, the translatability, generalizability, and reach of these insights are hampered by an overly narrow focus in our research. In particular, stereotypes, myths, assumptions and misconceptions have resulted in incomplete or incorrect understandings of ED presentations and trajectories, and exclusion of certain patient groups from our studies. In this review, we aim to counteract these historical imbalances. Taking as our starting point the Academy for Eating Disorders (AED) Truth #5 "Eating disorders affect people of all genders, ages, races, ethnicities, body shapes and weights, sexual orientations, and socioeconomic statuses", we discuss what we do and do not know about the genetic underpinnings of EDs among people in each of these groups, and suggest strategies to design more inclusive studies. In the second half of our review, we outline broad strategic goals whereby ED researchers can expand the diversity, insights, and clinical translatability of their studies.

The gas-phase reaction of NiAl2 O4 + with CH4 is studied by mass spectrometry in combination with vibrational action spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT). Two product ions, NiAl2 O4 H+ and NiAl2 O3 H2 + , are identified in the mass spectra. The DFT calculations predict that the global minimum-energy isomer of NiAl2 O4 + contains Ni in the +II oxidation state and features a terminal Al-O.- oxygen radical site. They show that methane can react along two competing pathways leading to formation of either a methyl radical (CH3 ⋅) or formaldehyde (CH2 O). Both reactions are initiated by hydrogen atom transfer from methane to the terminal O.- site, followed by either CH3 ⋅ loss or CH3 ⋅ migration to an O2- site next to the Ni2+ center. The CH3 ⋅ attaches as CH3 + to O2- and its unpaired electron is transferred to the Ni-center reducing it to Ni+ . The proposed mechanism is experimentally confirmed by vibrational spectroscopy of the reactant and two different product ions.
