RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The effects of fibrin glue (FG) and suture were investigated and compared with experimental induction in an endometriosis model. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A randomized, controlled, and double-blind study was performed with 25 adult female Wistar Albino rats. Two autologous endometrial grafts were obtained from each of the rats. The endometrial grafts were transplanted by gluing with FG on the right abdominal wall and suturing with only 5/0 prolene on the left in ten rats. Gluing+suturing and after suturing over the covering with FG of the endometrial graft were performed, respectively, on the right and left in another ten rats. Covering with FG glue of the endometrial graft was performed in another five rats. The endometriosis-like lesions and intraperitoneal adhesions were evaluated macroscopically and histopathologically. RESULTS: The mean volume (31.4 +/- 17.3), adhesion (0.8 +/- 0.7) and inflammatory reaction (1.2 +/- 0.7) score of the implants in the group using only FG were significantly lower than in the group using suture [respectively, (49.2 +/- 20.6), (2.4 +/- 0.8), (2.2 +/- 0.8)] (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrate the general feasibility of reproducible and reliable endometrial graft fixation with FG onto the inner abdominal surface in rats. Furthermore, several advantageous characteristics could be demonstrated such as less inflammation and fewer adhesions.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated experimentally the in vivo prophylactic efficacies of linezolid, teicoplanin and vancomycin in subcutaneously implanted dacron graft infection caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dacron grafts (1 cm(2)) were aseptically implanted into subcutaneous pockets that were surgically prepared in the backs of 50 rats. Ten of these rats were used as the control group (group I). Grafts in the remaining 40 rats were infected by inoculation of MRSA at the concentration of 2 x 10(7) colony-forming units (CFU)/ml. Ten of these rats constituted the contaminated, untreated group II. The other three study groups comprising 10 rats each were contaminated and then treated with linezolid (group III), teicoplanin (group IV) and vancomycin (group V), respectively. All rats were sacrificed and the grafts were removed after seven days and evaluated. RESULTS: The bacterial count decreased in the rats from the groups treated with linezolid, teicoplanin and vancomycin. The linezolid and teicoplanin groups, however, showed a significantly lower bacterial number than the vancomycin group (p = 0.009 and p = 0.01). The intensity of inflammation was highest in the contaminated, untreated group, as expected. CONCLUSIONS: Single-dose linezolid, teicoplanin and vancomycin for peri-operative prophylaxis may prevent bacterial growth in vascular graft infections. The effect of linezolid and teicoplanin seemed similar and their effect was greater than that of vancomycin.

This study examined the frequency of E-cadherin expression in endometrial biopsy or hysterectomy specimens from patients diagnosed with endometrial adenocarcinoma and in normal endometrial tissue specimens. E-cadherin expression was detected by immunohistochemistry using monoclonal antibody to E-cadherin. Specimens were classified as positive when >or= 5% of the tumour cells showed staining for E-cadherin, irrespective of the pattern of staining. Twenty-three endometrioid carcinomas and nine non-endometrioid (four papillary serous and five clear cell) carcinomas were studied, along with 10 normal endometrial tissue specimens as controls. E-cadherin expression was significantly less frequent in non-endometrioid carcinomas compared with endometrioid carcinomas and controls. There was no statistically significant difference in the frequency of E-cadherin expression between endometrioid carcinomas and controls. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that uterine non-endometrioid (papillary serous and clear cell) carcinomas were less likely to express E-cadherin compared with endometrioid carcinomas and normal endometrial tissue. This may help to explain the more aggressive behaviour of non-endometrioid carcinomas.
