RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a long-term and complex chronic disease that seriously affects the physical and mental health and quality of life of patients. Massage, as one of the methods in traditional Chinese medicine, can treat both symptoms and root causes and is widely used to treat CFS. The main purpose is to systematically evaluate the impact of massage therapy on the efficacy and safety of CFS patients, providing a reference for clinical practice. METHODS: By searching for literature published in PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, Wanfang Database, VIP Database, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database until November 2023, randomized controlled trial studies were selected according to the established inclusion and exclusion criteria. The Cochrane system evaluation manual was used to evaluate the quality of the included studies, and RevMan5.4 software was used for meta-analysis. RESULTS: 32 randomized controlled trials were included, with a total of 2594 CFS patients. Meta-analysis showed that the total score of the fatigue scale (FS-14) in the treatment group, MD = -1.59, 95% CI (-1.84, -1.34), P < .00001; Physical fatigue score, MD = -1.30, 95% CI (-1.60, -1.00), P < .00001; Mental fatigue score, MD = -0.84, 95% CI (-0.99, -0.72), P < .0001]; Effective rate [RR = 1.23, 95% CI (1.19,1.28), P < .00001]; all indicators were superior to the control group, Only one study reported adverse reactions, including local swelling, skin bruising, and nausea. CONCLUSION: Our research findings suggest that massage therapy has a significant therapeutic effect on CFS, avoiding adverse reactions and improving fatigue symptoms. Therefore, massage therapy for chronic fatigue syndrome should be further promoted and applied.

RESUMO

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological autoimmune disease, affecting the psychological and physical health of patients. Manual therapies have been proven to relieve pain, strengthen muscles, and improve bladder and bowel problems with a high safety and low adverse event profile. Previous studies have reported the results of manual therapy in alleviating symptoms associated with MS, but the conclusions were controversial. Objective: The purpose of this meta-analysis is to comprehensively analyze and determine the efficacy and safety of manual therapy in relieving symptoms associated with MS. Methods: Eight electronic databases were searched from inception of the database to April 30, 2021. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using manual therapy in patients to relieve symptoms associated with MS were considered eligible for this study. Two reviewers independently extracted data using pre-established standards. Results: Finally, 10 eligible RCTs with 631 subjects were included in this meta-analysis. These data establish that massage therapy can significantly ameliorate fatigue, pain, and spasms, while reflexology was only effective in relieving pain in MS patients. No adverse events were reported in eligible RCTs. Conclusions: The present study provides strong evidence that massage therapy could alleviate fatigue, pain, and spasms in MS patients, while reflexology plays a positive role in relieving pain. Physicians could consider massage therapy or reflexology as a safe and effective complementary and alternative treatment. Larger RCTs with higher methodological quality are needed in the future, which aim to provide more meaningful evidence for further proof of efficacy.

RESUMO

The paper introduces professor SHENG Can-ruo's experience in treatment of goiter with the combination of acupuncture and herbal medication. Professor SHENG believes that this disease is mostly related with emotional injury, improper diet and geographical and climatic factors, as well as body constitution. Qi stagnation, phlegm retention, blood stagnation and interaction of phlegm and stasis are the essential pathogenesis of goiter. Either acupuncture or herbal medication should focus on "phlegm and stasis" in treatment. Besides, the theory of western medicine should also be considered. In western medicine, thyroid enlargement is classified into Ⅰ, Ⅱ and Ⅲ degrees of struma, thus, the pathogenesis and treatment with Chinese medicine should be adjusted accordingly. The created "four throat points", combined with acupuncture at distal points, relieve the local masses. The basic herbal formula is prepared and the couplet medicines are modified based on syndrome differentiation. The integrated acupuncture and herbal medication regulates emotions and provides a comprehensive treatment for goiter.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The rat sciatic nerve crush injury model is one of the most commonly used models to research peripheral nerve injury (PNI), however, the evaluation of the model preparation lacks exact standards. This study aimed to investigate accurately assessment methods for research concerning the rat sciatic nerve crush injury. METHODS: The sciatic nerve crush injury model of was performed using the FST toothless forceps. The corresponding locations and pressures of different ratchet strengths were assessed by using CMAP, behavioral, and morphological methods. RESULTS: In each group of PNI, motor and sensory functions were gradually restricted on the injured side of rats as the applied pressure increased. CMAP was more sensitive to nerve injury arising out of the force values obtained from the forceps. CONCLUSIONS: As a sensitive indicator for PNI, the neuroelectrophysiological examination was more likely to reflect the morphological changes of injured nerves. These findings may provide a standardized approach to sciatic crush injury modelling.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to quantitatively evaluate and summarize the effectiveness of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in the treatment of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). METHODS: The PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, CBM, CNKI and Wanfang databases were searched for randomized controlled trails (RCTs) from their inception through July 10, 2021. RCTs that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were included in the study, and RevMan software was used for meta-analysis. Outcome indicators included scores on the fatigue severity scale (FSS), modified Ashworth scale (MAS) and the H/M amplitude ratio of the Soleus H reflex. When p < 0.05, the difference was considered significant. RESULTS: A total of 10 articles were included in this study, with 8 of them in the quantitative synthesis. The meta-analysis showed that the short-term effect of rTMS treatment for the MAS was better than that of the control treatment (95% CI: -1.27 to -0.25, p = 0.004); and compared with the control group, the effect of rTMS treatment for the H/M ratio showed a significant effect (95% CI: -0.12 to -0.03, p = 0.002); while the treatment effect for the FSS was not significant (95% CI: -4.87 to 1.28, p = 0.25). CONCLUSION: Our results provide preliminary evidence for the treatment of patients with MS by rTMS, especially for improving spasticity, but further research is needed to evaluate its effects on fatigue.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: It has been reported that local vibration therapy can benefit recovery after peripheral nerve injury, but the optimized parameters and effective mechanism were unclear. In the present study, we investigated the effect of local vibration therapy of different amplitudes on the recovery of nerve function in rats with sciatic nerve injury (SNI). METHODS: Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to SNI and then randomly divided into 5 groups: sham group, SNI group, SNI + A-1 mm group, SNI + A-2 mm group, and SNI + A-4 mm group (A refers to the amplitude; n = 10 per group). Starting on the 7th day after model initiation, local vibration therapy was given for 21 consecutive days with a frequency of 10 Hz and an amplitude of 1, 2 or 4 mm for 5 min. The sciatic function index (SFI) was assessed before surgery and on the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th days after surgery. Tissues were harvested on the 28th day after surgery for morphological, immunofluorescence and Western blot analysis. RESULTS: Compared with the SNI group, on the 28th day after surgery, the SFIs of the treatment groups were increased; the difference in the SNI + A-2 mm group was the most obvious (95% confidence interval [CI]: [5.86, 27.09], P < 0.001), and the cross-sectional areas of myocytes in all of the treatment groups were improved. The G-ratios in the SNI + A-1 mm group and SNI + A-2 mm group were reduced significantly (95% CI: [-0.12, -0.02], P = 0.007; 95% CI: [-0.15, -0.06], P < 0.001). In addition, the expressions of S100 and nerve growth factor proteins in the treatment groups were increased; the phosphorylation expressions of ERK1/2 protein in the SNI + A-2 mm group and SNI + A-4 mm group were upregulated (95% CI: [0.03, 0.96], P = 0.038; 95% CI: [0.01, 0.94], P = 0.047, respectively), and the phosphorylation expression of Akt in the SNI + A-1 mm group was upregulated (95% CI: [0.11, 2.07], P = 0.031). CONCLUSION: Local vibration therapy, especially with medium amplitude, was able to promote the recovery of nerve function in rats with SNI; this result was linked to the proliferation of Schwann cells and the activation of the ERK1/2 and Akt signaling pathways.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: MicroRNA (miR)-99a-5p acts as a tumor suppressor in several tumors, including bladder cancer and breast cancer, but its biological function in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is poorly understood. METHODS: miR-99a-5p expression was determined in OSCC tissues and cell lines using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Cell proliferation was assessed by the Cell Counting Kit-8 assay and colony formation assay. Wound healing and Transwell assays were used to analyze migration and invasion abilities, respectively, in OSCC cells. The luciferase reporter assay, RT-qPCR, and western blotting were used to determine the relationship between miR-99a-5p and isoprenylcysteine carboxylmethyltransferase (ICMT). RESULTS: miR-99a-5p expression in OSCC tissues and cell lines was significantly decreased compared with corresponding controls, and was significantly associated with clinical stage and lymph node metastasis in OSCC. Functional assays revealed that miR-99a-5p overexpression significantly inhibited the proliferation, migration, and invasion abilities of CAL-27 and TCA-8113 OSCC cells. miR-99a-5p was found to directly target ICMT, while ICMT restoration reversed the role of miR-99a-5p in OSCC cells. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that miR-99a-5p-mediates the down-regulation of ICMT, which could be used as a novel potential therapeutic target for OSCC treatment.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate nasal morphologies associated with nasal airway obstruction in unilateral alveolar cleft patients. METHODS: A total of 234 unilateral alveolar cleft cases were performed cone beam computed tomography scans. The digital imaging and communication in medicine data were imported into Simplant Pro software. The radiographic features including nasal septum deviation and inferior turbinate hypertrophy as well as nasal airway volume and sinusitis were analyzed. RESULTS: A new radiographic classification of relationship between nasal septum and inferior turbinate (NS-IT) on the cleft side was proposed and three types of NS-IT relationship (type I, II and III) were identified in 234 cases. The statistical analysis revealed that the nasal airway volume on non-cleft side was significantly higher than that on cleft side in each of three types (P  < 0.0001), while no difference of nasal airway volume on non-cleft side was found among three types. In addition, the nasal airway volume on non-cleft side in type I and II was significantly higher than that in type III (P < 0.0001). Also, type III presented higher rate of maxillary sinusitis (P = 0.0154) and ethmoid sinusitis on cleft side (P = 0.0490) than type I and II. The other indexes including clinical variances were not significant among three types. CONCLUSIONS: Unilateral alveolar cleft patients with type III NS-IT relationship could have nasal airway obstruction and higher rate of maxillary and ethmoid sinusitis on cleft side, which may be taken into account at primary cleft repair and alveolar bone grafting treatment.

RESUMO

H1N1 influenza is a kind of acute respiratory infectious disease that has a high socioeconomic and medical burden each year around the world. In the past decades, H1N1 influenza viruses have exhibited high resistance to adamantanes, which has become a serious issue. To understand the up-to-date distribution and evolution of H1N1 influenza viruses with adamantanes-resistant mutations, we conducted a deep analysis of 15875 M2 protein and 8351 MP nucleotides sequences. Results of the distribution analyses showed that 77.32% of H1N1 influenza viruses harbored-resistance mutations of which 73.52% were S31N, And the mutant variants mainly appeared in North America and Europe and H1N1 influenza viruses with S31N mutation became the circulating strains since 2009 all over the world. In addition, 80.65% of human H1N1 influenza viruses and 74.61% of swine H1N1 influenza viruses exhibited adamantanes resistance, while the frequency was only 1.86% in avian H1N1 influenza viruses. Studies from evolutionary analyses indicated that the avian-origin swine H1N1 influenza viruses replaced the classical human H1N1 influenza viruses and became the circulating strains after 2009; The interspecies transmission among avian, swine, and human strains over the past 20 years contributed to the 2009 swine influenza pandemic. Results of our study clearly clarify the historical drug resistance level of H1N1 influenza viruses around the world and demonstrated the evolution of adamantanes-resistant mutations in H1N1 influenza viruses. Our findings emphasize the necessity for monitoring the adamantanes susceptibility of H1N1 influenza viruses and draw attention to analyses of the evolution of drug-resistant H1N1 influenza variants.

RESUMO

With the improvement of living standard, the theory of " medicine and food homology" has developed rapidly in the field of diet, medicine and health preservation. In recent years, many literatures have been reported on the active ingredients and pharmacological effects of medicinal and edible plants, but relatively few reports have been reported on their safety investigation. Therefore,to further evaluate the quality and safety of medicinal and edible plants,Astragali Radix,Codonopsis Radix and Laminariae Thallus were selected as our research objects in this study. Moreover, the pollution level and the potential health risk of heavy metals were deeply assessed in different types of medicinal and edible plants. Especially, the contents of chromium, copper, arsenic, cadmium, mercury and lead in these three herbs were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry( ICP-MS),and their health risk level was evaluated by target hazard coefficient method. The results showed that under the international heavy metal limit standard( ISO 18664-2015,GB 2762-2017),the over-standard rates were 25%,77% and 100% in 16 batches of Astragali Radix,26 batches of Codonopsis Radix and 9 batches of Laminariae Thallus, respectively. Besides, the values of target hazard quotients( THQ) for adults and children are 0. 028 244,0. 063 505 and 0. 014 485,0. 032 568 in Astragalus membranaceus and Codonopsis pilosula, respectively, which were higher than the standard values of 0. 02 and 0. 011 25. While, the total heavy metals THQ values for adults and children are 0. 023 734 and 0. 020 287 in Laminariae Thallus, which were much higher than the standard values of 0. 008 0 and 0. 007 5. However, the CR values of As,Cd and Pb in the three herbs were lower than 1×10~(-6). Above results indicated that those six harmful elements have certain health hazards to the exposed population, but there is no potential carcinogenic effect. It can be seen that, there were still presence of the pollution of harmful elements, and it is necessary to establish the reasonable limit standards and quality control methods of medicinal and edible plants in time.

RESUMO

In order to comprehensively analyze the pollution level and bioaccessibility of different types of heavy metals and hazardous elements in animal medicine, this paper selected Bombyx Batryticatus as the research object, and used inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry( ICP-MS) to detect As,Cu,Hg,Pb,Ni,Cr,Zn and Cd. Based on the artificial gastrointestinal digestion model and the health risk assessment model of Chinese medicinal materials, the pollution level,in vivo and in vitro transfer rate and health risk grade of eight harmful elements in the above-mentioned medicinal materials of Bombyx Batryticatus were obtained respectively. The test result was found that under the ISO international standard of Chinese medicine-Chinese herbal medicine heavy metals, the unqualified rate was 50% for Bombyx Batryticatus, which including 2 batches of As and 4 batches of Cr exceeded the MRL. In artificial gastrointestinal digestion solution, the transfer rates of heavy metals As,Cu,Hg,Pb,Ni,Cr,Zn and Cd were 36. 849%,72. 372%,41. 152%,75. 354%,46. 603%,27. 981%,19. 707% and 76. 282%,respectively. The data of risk assessment model showed that the total THQ values of the most polluted batches for adults and children was 0. 021 548 and 0. 018 418,respectively. After digestion, the THQ values decreased to 0. 012 599 for adults and 0. 010 769 for children, which were still higher than the THQ standard values of animal medicine Bombyx Batryticatus. However, the CR value of carcinogenic risk is less than 1×10-6,so the potential non-carcinogenic risk caused by taking this batch of Bombyx Batryticatus medicines is higher and the carcinogenic risk can be ignored. To sum up,heavy metals and hazardous elements in Bombyx Batryticatus still exceed the standard, but the health risk level caused by heavy metals still needs to be investigated according to different medicinal materials,in order to provide data support for further improving the quality and safety of animal medicine.

RESUMO

To understand the evolution and molecular characteristics of Jiangxi H9N2 viruses, we isolated 17 viruses in 2011 and analyzed their characteristics. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that their hemagglutinin genes originate from JS/1/00-like sublineage, neuraminidase genes originate from BJ/94-like sublineage, PB1, PA, NP, and NS genes all come from SH/F/98-like sublineage, PB2 genes originate from ST/163/04-like sublineage, while M genes come from G1-like sublineage. Genotype analysis showed that our isolates were classified as genotype 57. Molecular analyses indicated that our strains contained specific sites characteristic of low-pathogenic viruses. The current study once again highlights the necessity for continued surveillance of novel H9N2 viruses.
