RESUMO

Recent advances in passive flying systems inspired by wind-dispersed seeds contribute to increasing interest in their use for remote sensing applications across large spatial domains in the Lagrangian frame of reference. These concepts create possibilities for developing and studying structures with performance characteristics and operating mechanisms that lie beyond those found in nature. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid flier system, fabricated through a process of controlled buckling, to yield unusual geometries optimized for flight. Specifically, these constructs simultaneously exploit distinct fluid phenomena, including separated vortex rings from features that resemble those of dandelion seeds and the leading-edge vortices derived from behaviors of maple seeds. Advanced experimental measurements and computational simulations of the aerodynamics and induced flow physics of these hybrid fliers establish a concise, scalable analytical framework for understanding their flight mechanisms. Demonstrations with functional payloads in various forms, including bioresorbable, colorimetric, gas-sensing, and light-emitting platforms, illustrate examples with diverse capabilities in sensing and tracking.

RESUMO

2D hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) are commonly found under subcritical cyclic stresses and suffer from fatigue issues during device operation. However, their fatigue properties remain unknown. Here, the fatigue behavior of (C4 H9 -NH3 )2 (CH3 NH3 )2 Pb3 I10 , the archetype 2D HOIP, is systematically investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). It is found that 2D HOIPs are much more fatigue resilient than polymers and can survive over 1 billion cycles. 2D HOIPs tend to exhibit brittle failure at high mean stress levels, but behave as ductile materials at low mean stress levels. These results suggest the presence of a plastic deformation mechanism in these ionic 2D HOIPs at low mean stress levels, which may contribute to the long fatigue lifetime, but is inhibited at higher mean stresses. The stiffness and strength of 2D HOIPs are gradually weakened under subcritical loading, potentially as a result of stress-induced defect nucleation and accumulation. The cyclic loading component can further accelerate this process. The fatigue lifetime of 2D HOIPs can be extended by reducing the mean stress, stress amplitude, or increasing the thickness. These results can provide indispensable insights into designing and engineering 2D HOIPs and other hybrid organic-inorganic materials for long-term mechanical durability.

RESUMO

Numerous studies have shown that endocrine-disrupting chemicals are one of the important pathogenic factors in women with polycystic ovary syndrome. Our previous study has revealed that bisphenol A (BPA) can cause steroid hormone imbalance, polycystic ovary, and estrus cycle disorder. In this study, we aimed to explore the effect of BPA, a typical environmental estrogen, on the synthesis of steroid hormones in human ovarian granulosa KGN cells. Exposure of KGN cells to BPA (0.5, 5, 50, and 500 µg/L) resulted in the decrease of progesterone (P), estradiol (E2), and the ratio of estradiol to testosterone (E2/T). BPA affected the expression of genes related to steroid hormone synthesis in KGN cells, including the decreased expression of the steroidogenic acute regulatory protein, ferredoxin, and ferredoxin reductase genes during progesterone synthesis; upregulating the expression of cytochrome p450 oxidoreductase gene associated with E2 and T synthesis; and the downregulated cytochrome P450 family 1 subfamily A member 1 and cytochrome P450 family 1 subfamily B member 1 in E2 degradation. BPA also reduced the expression of stimulatory G proteins (GS) in follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR)/GS/adenylate cyclase (AC) signaling pathway. In summary, our research has demonstrated that environment-relevant level of BPA exposure leads to steroid hormone synthesis disorder in human ovarian granulosa cells, which might cause the reduction of gene expression in hormone synthesis and the suppression of the FSHR/GS/AC signaling pathway.

RESUMO

Quantum dots (QDs) are new types of nanomaterials. Few studies have focused on the effect of different surface modified QDs on embryonic development. Herein, we compared the in vivo toxicity of CdSe/ZnS QDs with carboxyl (-COOH) and amino (-NH2) modification using zebrafish embryos. After exposure, the two CdSe/ZnS QDs decreased the survival rate, hatching rate, and embryo movement of zebrafish. Moreover, we found QDs attached to the embryo membrane before hatching and the eyes, yolk and heart after hatching. The attached amount of carboxyl QDs was more. Consistently, the Cd content in embryos and larvae was higher in carboxyl QD-treatment. We further observed that the two QDs caused zebrafish pericardial edema and cardiac dysfunction. In line with it, both carboxyl and amino QDs up-regulated the transcription levels of cardiac development-related genes, and the levels were higher in carboxyl QD-treated groups. Furthermore, the chelator of Cd2+ diethylene triamine pentacetate acid could partially rescued the developmental toxicity caused by the two types of QDs suggesting that both the nature of QDs and the release of Cd2+ contribute to the developmental toxicity. In conclusion, the two CdSe/ZnS QDs have developmental toxicity and affect the cardiac development, and the carboxyl QDs is more toxic possibly due to the higher affinity and more release to embryos and larvae. Our study provides new knowledge that the surface functional modification of QDs is critical on the development on aquatic species, which is beneficial to develop and applicate QDs more safely and environment-friendly.

RESUMO

The rational creation of two-component conjugated polymer systems with high levels of phase purity in each component is challenging but crucial for realizing printed soft-matter electronics. Here, we report a mixed-flow microfluidic printing (MFMP) approach for two-component π-polymer systems that significantly elevates phase purity in bulk-heterojunction solar cells and thin-film transistors. MFMP integrates laminar and extensional flows using a specially microstructured shear blade, designed with fluid flow simulation tools to tune the flow patterns and induce shear, stretch, and pushout effects. This optimizes polymer conformation and semiconducting blend order as assessed by atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS), resonant soft X-ray scattering (R-SoXS), photovoltaic response, and field effect mobility. For printed all-polymer (poly[(5,6-difluoro-2-octyl-2H-benzotriazole-4,7-diyl)-2,5-thiophenediyl[4,8-bis[5-(2-hexyldecyl)-2-thienyl]benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl]-2,5-thiophenediyl]) [J51]:(poly{[N,N'-bis(2-octyldodecyl)naphthalene-1,4,5,8-bis(dicarboximide)-2,6-diyl]-alt-5,5'-(2,2'-bithiophene)}) [N2200]) solar cells, this approach enhances short-circuit currents and fill factors, with power conversion efficiency increasing from 5.20% for conventional blade coating to 7.80% for MFMP. Moreover, the performance of mixed polymer ambipolar [poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT):N2200] and semiconducting:insulating polymer unipolar (N2200:polystyrene) transistors is similarly enhanced, underscoring versatility for two-component π-polymer systems. Mixed-flow designs offer modalities for achieving high-performance organic optoelectronics via innovative printing methodologies.

RESUMO

Graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) have broad applications such as bioimaging and drug delivery, among others, even expanding into the aquatic environment. However, reports on the adverse effects of GOQDs on fish development are limited. In this study, we exposed zebrafish embryos to GOQDs for 7 days after fertilization and found that GOQDs exposure at low concentrations (12.5, 25, 50 or 100 µg/L) decreased the total distance and the mean velocity of larvae movement. Additionally, the GOQDs significantly reduced the enzyme activity related to energy supply and locomotor capacity, including Ca2+ -ATPase in the 12.5, 25, 50 and 100 µg/L GOQDs groups and Na+ /K+ -ATPase in the 25 and 50 µg/L GOQDs groups. Moreover, GOQD exposure altered the mRNA expression of genes involved in energy supply and calcium transport. The levels of the atp2a2b, atp2a1, and cacna1sb genes were significantly downregulated in the 25, 50 and 100 µg/L GOQDs groups, and ryr3 expression was significantly reduced in the 25 and 50 µg/L GOQDs groups. The expression level of cacna1c was significantly upregulated in the 50 and 100 µg/L GOQDs groups. In summary, GOQD exposure induced a decrease in locomotor capacity in zebrafish, which may be due to the reduction of Ca2+ -ATPase and Na+ /K+ -ATPase activity levels, and dysregulated expression of the genes involved in energy metabolism and calcium transport. Our study provides novel insight into the effects of GOQDs on the embryonic development of fish, which will be useful for the development of environment-friendly GOQDs that reduce the potential hazard to aquatic species.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine whether having a previous diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) changed acute care needs in burn-injured patients. METHODS: This was a retrospective case-control study that included adult (aged ≥18years) patients with an acute burn injury. Control patients were matched with eleven patients with a history of MS at a 4:1 ratio. Outcomes included fluid resuscitation volumes, temperature, heart rate, mean arterial pressure, in-hospital complications, and hospital length of stay (LOS). RESULTS: There were fifty-five patients included and of those, eleven had a documented history of MS. Fluid resuscitation volumes, temperature, heart rate, and mean arterial pressure were similar between groups during the resuscitation period (p>0.05). LOS was similar between both groups (12, IQR: 2-17 vs. median 16, IQR: 12-21; p=0.090). However, when normalized to % TBSA burn, patients with MS had a significantly higher median LOS/% TBSA burned (1.2, IQR: 0.7-2.0 vs. 2.1, IQR: 1.1-7.1; p=0.031). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with concurrent burn injuries and MS have a significantly longer LOS/% TBSA burn suggesting that more time is required to heal their wounds. Surprisingly, there were no other significant differences in the after the burn acute phase between these two cohorts.

RESUMO

Materials with synchronous capabilities of color change and actuation have prospects for application in biomimetic dual-stealth camouflage and artificial intelligence. However, color/shape dual-responsive devices involve stimuli that are difficult to control such as gas, light or magnetism, and the devices show poor coordination. Here, a flexible composite film with electrochromic/actuating (238° bending angle) dual-responsive phenomena, excellent reversibility, high synchronization, and fast response speed (< 5 s) utilizes a single active component, W18O49 nanowires. From in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction, first principles calculations/numerical simulations, and a series of control experiments, the actuating mechanism for macroscopic deformation is elucidated as pseudocapacitance-based reversible lattice contraction/recovery of W18O49 nanowires (i.e. nanostructure change at the atomic level) during lithium ion intercalation/de-intercalation. In addition, we demonstrate the W18O49 nanowires in a solid-state ionic polymer-metal composite actuator that operates stably in air with a significant pseudocapacitive actuation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sepsis remains an ongoing diagnostic challenge in burns, especially with the signs of sepsis being ubiquitously present during the acute period after injury. We aimed to determine the predictive validity of 3 current sepsis criteria in the burn population. The criteria of interest included the American Burn Association sepsis criteria, Mann-Salinas et al predictors of sepsis, and the Sepsis-3 consensus definition. METHODS: Adult patients with an acute burn injury who were diagnosed prospectively with sepsis by the burn team using specific clinical markers were included in this cohort study. Sepsis predictors were collected from patient charts and used to calculate the results of the 3 criteria, then subsequently compared to the clinical diagnosis. RESULTS: Of the 418 patients in the study, which took place from 2000 until 2016, 88 (21%) were septic; the mean age was 50 ± 18 years with a mean percent total body surface area burn of 30% ± 17%. Inhalation injury was present in 50%, median length of stay was 49 (29-71) days, and mortality was 19%. The American Burn Association, Mann-Salinas, and Sepsis-3 criteria were positive in 59%, 28%, and 85% respectively, P < .05. The most reliable predictors included increased oxygen requirements, altered mental status, hypothermia, hyperthermia, tachycardia, and hypotension. CONCLUSION: The Sepsis-3 criteria was the most predictive, followed by the American Burn Association and Mann-Salinas criteria. However, no criterion alone had the accuracy to be a diagnostic standard within this burn population. We recommend sepsis is clinically assessed, diagnosed, and documented prospectively by the burn team, and not by the application of retrospective criteria.

RESUMO

This work formulates frictionless contact between solid bodies in terms of a repulsive potential energy term and illustrates how numerical integration of the resulting forces is computationally similar to the "pinball algorithm" proposed and studied by Belytschko and collaborators in the 1990s. We thereby arrive at a numerical approach that has both the theoretical advantages of a potential-based formulation and the algorithmic simplicity, computational efficiency, and geometrical versatility of pinball contact. The singular nature of the contact potential requires a specialized nonlinear solver and an adaptive time stepping scheme to ensure reliable convergence of implicit dynamic calculations. We illustrate the effectiveness of this numerical method by simulating several benchmark problems and the structural mechanics of the right atrioventricular (tricuspid) heart valve. Atrioventricular valve closure involves contact between every combination of shell surfaces, edges of shells, and cables, but our formulation handles all contact scenarios in a unified manner. We take advantage of this versatility to demonstrate the effects of chordal rupture on tricuspid valve coaptation behavior.

RESUMO

Sodium ion (Na+)-based electrochemical systems have been extensively investigated in batteries and supercapacitors and also can be quality candidates for electrochromic (EC) devices. However, poor diffusion kinetics and severe EC performance degradation occur during the intercalation/deintercalation processes because the ionic radii of Na+ are larger than those of conventional intercalation ions. Here, through intentional design of ion-transport channels in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), Na+ serves as an efficient intercalation ion for incorporation into a nanostructured electrode with a high diffusion coefficient of approximately 10-8 cm2 s-1. As a result, the well-designed MOF-based EC device demonstrates desirable Na+ EC performance, including fast switching speed, multicolor switching, and high stability. A smart "quick response code" display is fabricated using a mask-free laser writing method for application in the "Internet of Things". In addition, the concept of ion transport pathway design can be widely adopted for fabricating high-performance ion intercalation materials and devices for consumer electronics.

RESUMO

Nitrogen-containing organic chemicals such as amines, amides, nitriles, and hydrazones are crucial in chemical and medical industries. This paper reports a direct synthesis of N,N-dimethyl cyanamide [(CH3)2NCN] and amino acetonitrile (NH2CH2CN) through a methane/ammonia (CH4/NH3) coupling reaction triggered by dielectric barrier discharge plasma, with by-products of hydrazine, amines, and hydrazones. The influence of CH4/NH3 molar ratio, feedstock residence time, and specific energy input on the CH4/NH3 plasma coupling reaction has been investigated and discussed. Under the optimized conditions, the productivities of (CH3)2NCN and NH2CH2CN reached 0.46 and 0.82 g·L-1·h-1, respectively, with 8.83% CH4 conversion. In addition, through combining the optical emission spectra diagnosis and the reaction results, a possible CH4/NH3 plasma coupling reaction mechanism has been proposed. This paper provides a potential fine application of CH4 and NH3 in green synthesis of liquid nitrogen-containing organic chemicals, such as nitriles, amines, amides, and hydrazones.
