RESUMO

A microwave comb filter with ultra-fast tunability is proposed based on the fundamental delay-line microwave photonic filter. The central frequency of the passband or stopband in such a filter can be rapidly adjusted, along with the independent tunability of the free spectral range (FSR). Experimental results show that the central frequency of the transfer function is electronically tuned with a frequency difference of half of the FSR at a speed of <100 ps. Such high-speed tunability is vital for high-speed microwave switching, frequency hopping, cognitive radio, and next-generation radar systems.

RESUMO

A polarization-diversified photonic comb filter with tunable free spectrum range (FSR) is proposed using two variable differential group delay (DGD) elements in a loop configuration. Two different cosine transfer functions could be simultaneously realized on orthogonal polarization states. Experimental demonstrations also verify feasibilities in various reconfigurable transfer functions.

RESUMO

ZnO nanostructures of different morphologies were grown by immersing eggshell membranes into Zn(NO3)2 ethanol solution with different pH values and subsequently sintered at 500 degrees C. Effects of the solution pH value, immersing time and Mg incorporation on the nanostructure morphology and photoluminescence were studied. ZnO nanostructure morphology was very sensitive to pH value of the solution, immersing time and layer of the templates. Different morphologies of nanofibers, nanotubes, hexagonal nanosheets and hexagonal nanosheets with tips were grown. All nanostructures had strong green emission at 520 nm and weak ultraviolet emission at 377 nm. The green emission weakened in the interwoven nanofibers while the ultraviolet emission enhanced in the hexagonal nanosheets. Incorporation of Mg ions in the solution with a pH of 7 would result in combination of the interwoven nanofibers and enhance the green emission greatly. UV emission at 355 nm from ZnMgO alloys was observed in Mg incorporated nanofibers.

RESUMO

A photonic scheme to generate a phase-coded microwave signal with tunable carrier frequency based on a simple single-trip and two-pass structure is proposed. Facilitated by the fiber Bragg grating and phase modulator along the trip, both frequency doubling and signal phase coding could be achieved simultaneously. Phase-coded microwave signals at 20 and 22 GHz are experimentally generated.

RESUMO

Microwave photonic arbitrary waveform generation based on incoherent frequency-to-time-mapping (FTTM) accompanied by intersymbol interference, so called crossed FTTM (CFTTM). The pulse shape can be defined and tuned by properly adjusting the spectrum shaper (symbol shape) and the degree of intersymbol interference. UWB-, triangular-, rectangle-, comb- and user-defined pulse shapes are experimentally obtained.

RESUMO

A scheme to improve the bandwidth of slow light using cascaded vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the scheme, a proper adjustment on the gain peaks of two cascaded VCSELs enables the generation of the desired composite gain spectrum, which has flat-top gain and delay profiles with enhanced peak values. By employing the improved gain and delay profiles in a slow light system, a large delay can be achieved within a wider bandwidth. In the experiment, by using two cascaded VCSELs, a tunable slow light up to 135 ps for a 5 Gbits/s pseudorandom binary sequence is demonstrated with relatively low signal distortion.

RESUMO

A photonic approach to generate impulse ultrawideband (UWB) signals with switchable shapes and polarities based on the frequency-to-time mapping technique is proposed and demonstrated. UWB monocycle, doublet, and triplet signals with two polarities can be obtained by adjusting the switchable spectrum shaper.

RESUMO

A novel scheme for bit-rate-variable polarization-division-multiplexed return-to-zero to nonreturn-to-zero and NRZ to pseudo-return-to-zero format conversions is proposed using a variable differential-group-delay element inside a polarization-diversified loop. Conversion for both 2×10 and 2×12.5 Gbit/s PDM signals are successfully demonstrated with approximately 1 dB additional power penalty by properly adjusting DGD values of the variable DGD element.

RESUMO

Simultaneous all-optical RZ-OOK to NRZ-OOK format conversion for two tributaries in PDM signal is demonstrated utilizing a single section of highly nonlinear fiber through polarization nonlinear loop mirror configuration. Less than 1-dB power penalty is achieved in a 2 × 12.5-Gb/s PDM system, and only 1.4-dB SNR penalty is obtained in a 2 × 40-Gb/s PDM system.

RESUMO

An all-optical comb filter with independently tunable wavelength spacing and bandwidth (BW) is proposed. Using three cascaded variable differential-group-delay elements, we demonstrate theoretically and experimentally the tunability of the comb filter with >10 dB sidelobe reduction by adjusting three elements. The wavelength spacing is determined by the first filter module, while the sidelobe suppression ratio and the BW are defined by the middle and the last one, respectively.

RESUMO

We demonstrate simultaneous 10-Gb/s NRZ-to-RZ format conversion and multicasting from one to many data channels in a highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) with only a single pump. Functionalities are achieved based on various nonlinear effects, such as four-wave-mixing (FWM), cross-gain-modulation (XGM) and cross-phase-modulation (XPM) between the pump channel and the NRZ data channel. Up to five and six converted data channels are error-free (10(-9) BER) as the wavelength spacing between the pump and the NRZ signal is set to 0.4-nm and 0.8-nm, respectively.

RESUMO

A large-ratio stretcher for ultra-short pulses is proposed based on photonic crystal fiber (PCF). Through proper design of the PCF structure, we obtain over 300-nm wavelength range with flattened dispersion characteristics. Analysis indicates that 1-km of such fiber can broaden over 10,000 times for ultra-short pulses with <100-fs pulse-width. Distortion due to dispersion and nonlinearity is negligible.

RESUMO

We demonstrate simultaneous self-phase-modulation-based 2R regeneration of 2 x 10.65-Gb/s polarization-division-multiplexed (PDM) signals using a single section of highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF). Mitigation of inter-channel nonlinearities is achieved through a bidirectional configuration, rejecting of backward Stimulated Brillouin Scattering noise is obtained by signal re-polarizing before the offset filter and putting the center wavelength of filter at the short wavelength side of the signal. The power penalty improvement up to 2.0 dB for two PDM signals at 10(-9) BER is achieved.

RESUMO

We describe a cost effective scheme to automatically separate two polarization channels in a polarization division multiplexing (PDM) system, without having to modify the existing transmitter or receiver electronics or software. We experimentally validate the concept by achieving an extinction ratio of more than 28-dB between two demultiplexed channels. Finally, we successfully demonstrate the PDM scheme in a 1.12-Tb/s (14x2x40-Gb/s) system over 62-km of transmission fiber.

RESUMO

We conceptually compare the advantages of the proposed slow-light-based tunable OTDM to conventional fiber-based fixed OTDM multiplexer. We experimentally demonstrate continuously-controllable OTDM of two 2.5-Gb/s return-to-zero (RZ) signals using broadband SBS-based slow-light as the tunable optical delay line. We show that the time slot of one signal path can be manipulated relative to the other by as much as 75-ps. This continuous slow light tunability dramatically enhances the OTDM system performance which results in a power penalty reduction of 9-dB for the multiplexed data stream. We also demonstrate variable-bit-rate OTDM by dynamically adjusting the tunable slow-light delay according to the input bit-rates. We show efficient two-by-one optical time multiplexing of three different input data streams at 2.5-Gb/s, 2.67-Gb/s and 5-Gb/s.

RESUMO

Optical filtering has been used to extend the reach of directly modulated laser in 10Gb/s WDM systems via two separate mechanisms: narrowing the broadened spectrum, and converting frequency modulation into useful amplitude modulation. We investigate in detail, the impact of asymmetric and narrowband optical filtering at the transmitter or receiver. Experimental demonstrations for both shorter distance and long-haul like transmission using optical filtering are performed. The transmission reach is nearly doubled from <25-km to >45-km without dispersion compensation. 1400-km error-free transmission (Q > 15.6-dB) is further achieved over dispersion-managed link for a directly modulated DFB laser within an 8x10-Gb/s WDM system.

RESUMO

Gene rearrangement and monoclonality have been detected in non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHLs). The semi-nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed to amplify IgH and the mixed PCR to TCR gamma gene rearrangements. Monoclonal band was observed in 77% of B-cell NHLs with IgH primers and 91% of T-cell NHLs with TCR gamma primers. The results show that PCR is more valuable in determining the clonality and lineage of the tumor. Moreover, 3 cases of "borderline" lymphoid hyperplasia showed clonal bands of IgH and TCR gamma gene rearrangements and follow-up studies found that one patient died of the disease 13 months after biopsy. Presumably, gene rearrangement analysis plays a significant role in the discovery of early stage disease. In comparison with Southern blot, PCR is simple, more convenient and rapid. Furthermore, no isotope is required and can be used in paraffin embedded sections, cytologic specimens and other materials. This technique can therefore be used in daily clinical diagnosis.
