RESUMO

An anodically oxidizing trifluoromethylation cascade of N-cyanamide alkene bearing two electronically differentiated olefin moieties was reported, in which various N-unsaturated acyl cyanamide alkenes and CF3SO2Na acting as readily available starting materials furnished nonaromatic fused azaheterobicyclic compounds in a highly efficient and sustainable manner. The broad substrate scope, facile scalability, and sustainability enabled this electrochemical process to be an appealing complement for trifluoromethylated cyclic amidines.

RESUMO

Osteopontin (OPN) is a multifunctional protein secreted intracellularly and extracellularly by various cell types, including NK cells, macrophages, osteoblasts, T cells, and cancer cells. Owing to its diverse distribution, OPN plays a role in cell proliferation, stem-cell-like properties, epithelial-mesenchymal transformation, glycolysis, angiogenesis, fibrosis, invasion, and metastasis. In this review, we discuss recent findings, interpret representative studies on OPN expression in cancer, clarify that elevated OPN levels are observed in multiple cancer types (including colorectal, breast, lung, and liver cancer), and explore how OPN-macrophage interactions shape the tumor microenvironment. We also summarize progress in OPN research with regard to tumor therapy, which can facilitate the development of novel anti-tumor treatment strategies.

RESUMO

As the main channel for people to obtain information and express their opinions, online media generate a huge amount of unstructured news documents every day and make it difficult for people to perceive major societal events and grasp the evolution of events. Previous studies on storyline generation are generally based on document clustering without considering event arguments and relations between events. Event-centric knowledge graph has been used to facilitate the construction of news documents to form structured event representation. Although some studies have attempted to construct timelines based on event-centric knowledge graphs, it is difficult for timelines to depict the complex structures of event evolution. In this paper, we try to represent news documents as an event-centric knowledge graph, and compress the whole knowledge graph into salient complex events in temporal order to generate storylines named narrative graph. We first collect news documents from news platforms, construct an event ontology, and build an event-centric knowledge graph with temporal relations. Graph neural network is used to detect events, while BERT fine-tuning is leveraged to identify temporal relations between events. Then, a novel generation framework of narrative graph with constraints of coherence and coverage is proposed. In addition, a case study is implemented to demonstrate how to utilize narrative graph to analyze real-world event. The experiment results show that our approach significantly outperforms the baseline approaches.

RESUMO

Anaerobes harbor some of the most efficient biological machinery for cellulose degradation, especially thermophilic bacteria, such as Acetivibrio thermocellus and Thermoclostridium stercorarium, which play a fundamental role in transferring lignocellulose into ethanol through consolidated bioprocessing (CBP). In this study, we compared activities of two cellulase systems under varying kinds of hemicellulose and cellulose. A. thermocellus was identified to contribute specifically to cellulose hydrolysis, whereas T. stercorarium contributes to hemicellulose hydrolysis. The two systems were assayed in various combinations to assess their synergistic effects using cellulose and corn stover as the substrates. Their maximum synergy degrees on cellulose and corn stover were, respectively, 1.26 and 1.87 at the ratio of 3:2. Furthermore, co-culture of these anaerobes on the mixture of cellulose and xylan increased ethanol concentration from 21.0 to 40.4 mM with a high cellulose/xylan-to-ethanol conversion rate of up to 20.7%, while the conversion rates of T. stercorarium and A. thermocellus monocultures were 19.3% and 15.2%. The reason is that A. thermocellus had the ability to rapidly degrade cellulose while T. stercorarium co-utilized both pentose and hexose, the metabolites of cellulose degradation, to produce ethanol. The synergistic effect of cellulase systems and metabolic pathways in A. thermocellus and T. stercorarium provides a novel strategy for the design, selection, and optimization of ethanol production from cellulosic biomass through CBP.

RESUMO

Electrochromic (EC)/electrofluorochromic (EFC) bifunctional materials are receiving great attention because of their promising applications in optoelectronic devices. However, the development of ideal EC/EFC bifunctional materials is still a great challenge because of the poor integration of EC/EFC performances (optical contrast, response speed, and switching stability). Herein, we reported two novel diphenylamine-based mixed valence (MV) polyamides (S-HPA and P-HPA) with spirobifluorene (2,7-positions) and pyrene (1,6-positions) as bridged fluorescence units, respectively, showing impressive cyclability and fluorescence contrast with rapid switching. Through the formation of an effective electronic coupling between the two nitrogen centers using spirobifluorene/pyrene bridges, we demonstrated that different bridges have significant effects on the thermal and electrooptical characteristics of polyamides. In addition to lower fluorescence quantum yield and glass transition temperature, the S-HPA exhibited superior cyclability (contrast change <3.4%/14% over 500/300 cycles for EC/EFC switching), higher color/fluorescence contrast (64%/304%), and faster switching time (<2.6 s), mainly owing to the shorter conjugated length and more twisted configuration of the spirobifluorene bridge. The design principle of MV polymers with fluorophore bridges proposed here will be a promising way to realize high-performance EC/EFC devices and will also provide new insights into their future development and applications.

RESUMO

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: Brainea insignis (Aspleniaceae) is an endangered tree fern in China whose wild populations have been seriously damaged due to overexploitation. Expressed sequence tag-simple sequence repeat (EST-SSR) primers were developed to investigate its genetic diversity and provide resources for future conservation studies. METHODS AND RESULTS: We obtained 72,897 unigenes of B. insignis using transcriptome sequencing and detected 15,006 SSRs in 12,058 unigenes. Based on these results, we designed 100 EST-SSR primer pairs and successfully amplified 52 of them in six individuals; 27 demonstrated polymorphisms after amplification against 72 individuals across three populations. Allele numbers ranged from three to 10, and the observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.105 to 1.000 and from 0.523 to 0.865, respectively, in the tested populations. Most of these primers could be successfully amplified in two other fern species (Blechnumorientale and Chieniopteris harlandii). CONCLUSIONS: These selected EST-SSRs are valuable for genetic diversity and conservation studies in B. insignis and other related fern species.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Outcomes of methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) in the management of opioid dependency can be impaired by poor adherence and retention, concomitant drug use, poor adjustment of methadone dosage, and low levels of awareness regarding methadone among drug users, among other factors. This study investigated the effects of intensive blended treatment literacy and psychoeducation on treatment compliance, methadone dose, and heroin use among MMT clients in China. METHODS: A total of 492 MMT clients who tested positive for urine morphine at least once during a 12-week intervention period preceding the study were recruited from 16 MMT clinics. Employing a client-centred approach, a blended treatment literacy and psychoeducation intervention was then implemented between March and June 2014, comprising (1) intensified methadone treatment literacy sessions; (2) participatory goal setting; (3) continuous adherence monitoring and support; and (4) engagement of both peers and doctors in delivering psychoeducation. Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to compare urine morphine positive rates, daily methadone dosage, and the number of days that clients successfully accessed methadone before and during the intervention. RESULTS: During the intervention, urine morphine positive rates reduced to 27% from 49.3% previously; p < 0.001. In response to client needs, methadone dosages increased among 74% of participants, remained unchanged among 12.0%, and reduced among 13.4% during the intervention. In addition, the average daily methadone dose increased from 63.0 to 72.6 mg; p < 0.001, while the average number of days that clients successfully accessed methadone increased from 69.4 to 73.9 over a period of 12 weeks; p < 0.001. CONCLUSIONS: Blended treatment literacy and psychoeducation delivered by a combination of peers and doctors was associated with reduced heroin use, improved treatment adherence, and higher methadone doses among our sample of MMT clients.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The objective of the intervention was to reduce service providers' stigmatizing attitudes and behaviors toward people living with HIV. METHODS: The randomized controlled trial was conducted in 40 county-level hospitals in 2 provinces of China between October 2008 and February 2010. Forty-four service providers were randomly selected from each hospital, yielding a total of 1760 study participants. We randomized the hospitals to either an intervention condition or a control condition. In the intervention hospitals, about 15% of the popular opinion leaders were identified and trained to disseminate stigma reduction messages. RESULTS: We observed significant improvements for the intervention group in reducing prejudicial attitudes (P < .001), reducing avoidance intent towards people living with HIV (P < .001), and increasing institutional support in the hospitals (P = .003) at 6 months after controlling for service providers' background factors and clinic-level characteristics. The intervention effects were sustained and strengthened at 12 months. CONCLUSIONS: The intervention reduced stigmatizing attitudes and behaviors among service providers. It has the potential to be integrated into the health care systems in China and other countries.

RESUMO

This study aims to investigate health care providers' empathy levels and its association with avoidance in providing service to patients living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in China. A total of 1760 health service providers were randomly sampled from 40 county hospitals in two provinces of China. Using a self-administered questionnaire, participants' demographic characteristics, work history, empathy level, and avoidance attitudes toward PLWHA were collected in a cross-sectional survey. Empathy was higher among participants aged 31-40 years, those who had an associated medical degree, and those who had served in the medical profession for less than 20 years. Nurses, younger providers, and providers with lower education tended to avoid contact with PLWHA. Multiple linear regression model showed that a higher level of empathic attitude toward patients was significantly negatively associated with avoidance attitude toward PLWHA. Service providers' empathy level plays an important role in providing quality care to HIV-infected patients. Future stigma reduction interventions should cultivate empathy as a platform for understanding, effective communication, and trusting provider-patient relationships. PLWHA could potentially benefit from attitudinal change in medical settings.

RESUMO

In this paper, a polypropylene frit with porous network structure and high area-to-thickness ratio (4.8 mm diameter, 1.6 mm thickness, 20 mm pore size) was utilized as a mould of monolith. Poly(methacrylic acid-ethlyene glycol dimethacrylate) (MAA-EGDMA) monolith was in situ synthesized in the micro-channel of frit by photopolymerization. A monolith frit-based solid-phase microextraction method (SPME) was developed for the determination of hexanal and heptanal in serum samples by combining with high-performance liquid chromatography. 2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) as the derivatizing reagent was absorbed on a monolith frit, then its derivatization reaction with aldehydes and the absorption of formed hydrazones on the monolith disk occurred simultaneously. The condition parameters for polymerization, derivatization and extraction were optimized systematically. Under the optimum conditions, rigid structure, low back-pressure and high column capacity were achieved for the monolith frit. The limits of detection for hexanal and heptanal were 1.86 and 1.38 nmol/L, respectively. The inter- and intra-day relative standard deviations were less than 7.7% (n = 6). This method was applied successfully to aldehydes analysis in human serum samples. The method possesses advantages such as simplicity, efficiency, low cost and good biocompatibility. It provides an alternative approach for quantification of aldehydes in complex biological samples.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: While international research on patient satisfaction on healthcare has grown tremendously in the past three decades, little research has been conducted concerning healthcare-related patient satisfaction in China. This study was designed to examine what factors including patients' characteristics and ease of access to care are associated with level of patient satisfaction and how such satisfaction might differ across rural and urban populations in China. This study also serves as an evaluation of the recent healthcare reforms that have taken place in China, which were expected to equalize satisfaction between rural and urban patients. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey to assess satisfaction among patients attending county-level hospitals in China. SETTING: Forty county-level hospitals in two provinces of China. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-five patients from each of the 40 county-level hospitals. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Patient satisfaction measured with 15 questions. RESULTS: Perceived convenience was significantly associated with patient satisfaction among all participants. The new rural cooperative medical insurance scheme (NRCMIS) was associated with higher overall satisfaction among the rural residents. Age and income were significantly related to satisfaction only among rural patients. CONCLUSIONS: Rural residents benefit greatly from the implementation of NRCMIS. Future reform could be more effective by catering the needs of each specific group (e.g. low-income population, rural population, etc.) identified by this study.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between adherence to universal precaution (UP) and avoidance attitudes toward patients living with HIV/AIDS (PLH) among service providers. DATA SOURCES/SETTING: A total of 1,760 health service providers were randomly selected from 40 county hospitals in two provinces of China. STUDY DESIGN: A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect demographic characteristics, UP knowledge and training, UP adherence, availability of UP supplies at work, and avoidance attitudes toward PLH in a cross-sectional survey. DATA ANALYSIS: A series of regression models were used to examine associations among the UP-related factors and their relationship to avoidance attitudes toward PLH. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: UP training was associated with better knowledge of and adherence to UP and perceived availability of UP supplies in hospitals. UP training, knowledge, and adherence were significantly associated with avoidance attitudes toward PLH in medical practice. Being a nurse was also related to HIV-related avoidance. CONCLUSION: UP promotion campaigns, including in-service training and reinforcement of UP adherence, could play an important role in the battle against HIV-related avoidance in medical settings. Intervention programs should focus on not only individual providers' attitudes and behaviors but also on structural support for norms shifts in the medical community.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the preliminary reliability and validity of the Chinese Mandarin version of the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) 4.0 Generic Core Scales in a sample of general children and children living in HIV/AIDS-affected families. METHODS: The PedsQL 4.0 was administered to 116 children aged 8-18 years from HIV/AIDS-affected families and 115 of their caregivers. The questionnaire was also administered to a control group of 109 children and 107 of their caregivers. RESULTS: Most of the self-report and proxy-report scales in both groups exceeded the reliability standard of 0.70, whereas the self-report emotional functioning and school functioning subscales were slightly less than 0.70. On average, children living in HIV/AIDS-affected families scored significantly lower than the control group. The level of agreement between self-reports and proxy reports was low. Correlations were higher on average for the younger age group than for the older age group. CONCLUSIONS: The Chinese Mandarin version of PedsQL 4.0 is a valid and reliable instrument for use with children living in HIV families. The health-related quality of life for children living in HIV families is lower than children from ordinary families.

RESUMO

This study assessed the effect of a brief intervention aimed at reducing HIV-related stigma among service providers in China. From December 2005 to June 2006, 138 service providers from four county hospitals in the Yunnan province of China were randomly assigned into either an intervention or a control condition. HIV stigma reduction concepts were conveyed through participatory small group activities, including role-plays, games, group discussions, and testimony by an HIV advocate. Participants were assessed at baseline before the intervention, and at 3- and 6-month follow-ups. Data were analyzed using a logistic regression mixed-effects model. Service providers in the brief intervention condition were significantly more likely to report better protection of patients' confidentiality and right to HIV testing, lower levels of negative feelings toward people living with HIV/AIDS, and more accurate understanding and practice of universal precautions. This brief intervention pilot showed potential in reducing HIV stigma and discrimination among service providers in China. Further intervention trials are needed to test the efficacy and long-term outcomes of this intervention.

RESUMO

With a rising HIV/AIDS epidemic, it has become especially important for health service providers in China to understand and correctly adhere to universal precautions. Using qualitative interview data, perspectives from both health administrators and service providers working at all levels of China's health care system were examined. Service providers admitted selective adherence and non-adherence to universal precautions in their daily medical practice, and gave their explanations for such behaviors. Lack of time to put on protective gear, gear's interference with medical procedures, lack of administrative support, heavy workload in hospitals, inaccurate risk assessment, and beliefs that compliance with universal precautions is unnecessary, time consuming and costly were mentioned as reasons behind noncompliance. Effective universal precaution interventions need to target both administrators and providers, and address both structural barriers and individual attitudinal and behavioral factors.

RESUMO

We examined how individual and institutional factors in health care settings affected discrimination toward persons with HIV/AIDS. A representative sample of 1101 Chinese service providers was recruited in 2005, including doctors, nurses, and laboratory technicians. Multiple regression models were used to describe associations among identified variables, the relationships with HIV-related personal prejudicial attitudes, and perceived institutional support and discrimination at work. Multivariate analyses revealed that respondents' general view of persons living with HIV/AIDS and their perceived levels of support from their institutions regarding protection procedures were both important predictors for discrimination intent. Perceived institutional support varied according to age, gender, ethnicity, and training background. A better understanding of HIV-related discrimination in health care settings requires consideration of both individual and institutional factors.

RESUMO

This study examines the role that family plays in disclosure of HIV-AIDS in China. In-depth semistructured interviews were conducted with 30 individuals living with HIV-AIDS infected through different routes. The vast majority of participants were between the ages of 20 and 39 years old (93.4%) and about a third (36.7%) were women. Two primary disclosure processes, involuntary and voluntary, are described. In both processes, family members other than the patient are usually the first to know HIV status. Positive impacts of disclosure include strengthening family relations and help with medical care and counseling, whereas negative impacts include fear, isolation, avoidance, and psychological burden. This study illustrates that family is an intricate part of the disclosure process in China and demonstrates the importance of including families in HIV-AIDS interventions.

RESUMO

Three novel coordination polymers built of octahedral niobium cyanochloride clusters [Nb6Cl12(CN)6] and alkaline earth metal complexes have been prepared by reaction of aqueous solutions of (Me4N)4Nb6Cl18 and KCN with solutions of alkaline earth metal salts and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) (1:2 molar ratio) in H2O/EtOH. The structures of [Ca(phen)2(H2O)3]2[Nb6Cl12(CN)6] x (phen)(EtOH)1.6 (1), [Ca(phen)2(H2O)2]2[Nb6Cl12(CN)6] x (phen)2 x 4H2O (2), and [Ba(phen)2(H2O)]2[Nb6Cl12(CN)6] (3) were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The three compounds were found to crystallize in the monoclinic system (space group Pn) with a = 11.5499(6) A, b = 17.5305(8) A, c = 21.784(1) A, beta = 100.877(1) degrees for 1; triclinic system (P1) with a = 12.609(4) A, b = 13.262(4) A, c = 16.645(5) A, alpha = 69.933(6) degrees, beta = 68.607(6) degrees, gamma = 63.522(5) degrees for 2; and a = 16.057(1) A, b = 16.063(1) A, c = 16.061(1) A, alpha = 86.830(1) degrees, beta = 64.380(1) degrees, gamma = 67.803(1) degrees for 3. Compounds 1 and 2 are built of cluster anions [Nb6Cl12(CN)6]4- trans-coordinated by two Ca2+ complexes via CN ligands to form neutral macromolecular units [Ca(phen)2(H2O)3]2[Nb6Cl12(CN)6] in 1 and [Ca(phen)2(H2O)2]2[Nb6Cl12(CN)6] in 2. Water of coordination and cyanide ligands form hydrogen bonded 3D and 2D frameworks for 1 and 2, respectively. The structure of 3 consists of [Nb6Cl12(CN)6]4- cluster anions and [Ba(phen)2(H2O)]2+ complexes linked through bridging cyanide ligands to form a neutral three-dimensional framework in which each barium complex is bound to three neighboring Nb6 clusters and each Nb6 cluster is linked to six Ba complexes.
