RESUMO

RATIONALE: In surgery of the lower jaw, the application of computer-assisted navigation is complicated and challenging due to the mobile nature of the mandible. In this study, we presented a computer-assisted navigation surgery for removal of the foreign body in the lower jaw with a mandible reference frame, basing on the strategy that the mandible is independent as an entity. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 41-year-old male patient, identified as having a broken fissure bur that displaced into the mandibular lingual soft tissue, was referred to our department. The fissure bur broke accidentally and then displaced into the soft tissue when the patient underwent extraction of the left mandibular impacted third molar. DIAGNOSIS: A metallic foreign body in the left lower jaw, confirmed by orthopantomography. INTERVENTIONS: A computer-assisted navigation surgery with a customized mandible reference frame. OUTCOMES: The broken bur was removed successfully. Satisfactory wound healing and mouth opening was achieved, without postoperative complications. LESSONS: Surgeons should be alert to the presence of broken bur in the lower jaw and avoid its displacement into deep facial space, and computer-assisted navigation with a mandible reference frame is recommended for removal of the foreign body in the lower jaw.

RESUMO

RATIONALE: Traumatic displacement of teeth into the maxillary sinus is rare. This report described a case of 2 molars accidentally displaced into the maxillary sinus and the retrieval of teeth assisted by computer-assisted navigation. PATIENT CONCERN: A 16-year-old male patient suffered from maxillofacial trauma with the first and second molars in the left maxilla were missing, and an orificium fistula to the maxillary sinus appeared in the dentition region of molars. DIAGNOSE: The tomography revealed 2 tooth-like hyperdensity images in the left maxillary sinus. INTERVENTION: Computer-assisted navigation surgery was scheduled for the retrieval surgery, and the displaced teeth were removed from the maxillary sinus smoothly. OUTCOMES: The patient displayed uneventful wound healing without postoperative complications in the maxillary sinus. LESSONS: Surgeons should be alert to the presence of missing teeth in maxillofacial trauma and avoid missed diagnosis, and computer-assisted navigation is recommended for the retrieval of teeth displaced into the maxillary sinus.

RESUMO

The removal of a large number of foreign bodies in the maxillofacial region can be complicated and challenging. In this case report, a specific strategy for removal of multiple foreign bodies in the maxillofacial region is presented. A girl diagnosed with 24 foreign bodies in her left lower face and neck underwent the surgery using a computer-assisted navigation system. A specific strategy was used in this case, which included from one sub-region to the next and from the easiest to the most difficult. This strategy is recommended for the removal of a large number of foreign bodies in the maxillofacial region with a navigation system.

RESUMO

Alginate (ALg)-human-like collagen (HLC) microspheres were prepared by the technology of electrostatic droplet generation in order to develop a biocompatible vehicle for probiotic bacteria. Microparticles were spherical with mean particle size of 400µm. The encapsulation efficiency (EE) of ALg-HLC microspheres could reach 92-99.2%. Water-soluble and fibrous human-like collagen is combined with sodium alginate through intermolecular hydrogen bonding and electrostatic force which were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thus the matrix of ALg-HLC was very stable. Bifidobacterium longum BIOMA 5920, as a kind of probiotic bacteria, was encapsulated with alginate-human-like collagen to survive and function in simulated gastrointestinal juice. Microparticles were very easy to degradation in simulated intestinal juices. After incubation in simulated gastric (pH 2.0, 2h), the encapsulated B. longum BIOMA 5920 numbers were 4.81 ± 0.38 log cfu/g.
