RESUMO

Combustion of organic solid wastes releases phenolic compounds which can act as precursors in the formation of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) in the post-flame, cooling zone of waste combustion. The study investigated the generation mechanism of EPFRs from phenolic compounds catalyzed by transition metals in air atmosphere under simulated combustion conditions. Representative combustion-derived phenolic compounds were used, and SiO2 particulates containing different mass ratio of Fe2O3 were synthesized as carriers. EPFRs formed had g-factors between 1.9998 and 2.0066, indicating phenoxyl-, cyclopentadienyl-, and semiquinone-type radicals, along with paramagnetic F-centers. The promotion effect of phenolic compounds on EPFR formation during heating decreased as catechol > hydroquinone > phenol > p-cresol. This trend is related to hydroxyl groups and activation energy. In particular, catechol chemically adsorbed on Fe2O3 at 600 K led to the formation of EPFRs with relatively high spin concentrations (up to 1.28 × 1017 spin/g). Higher Fe2O3 concentrations promoted the transformation of phenoxyl-type radicals into cyclopentadienyl-type and paramagnetic F-centers. However, as the Fe2O3 loading increased from 1.25% to 5%, the density of EPFRs decreased. The findings related to the influence of various precursors and Fe2O3 concentration on EPFR formation provide valuable insights for estimating EPFR generation and associated risk during combustion processes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Tapes dorsatus is an economically important benthic animal in the Beibu Gulf of China. However, the deficiency of microsatellite markers has hindered the study of its genetics. The development of microsatellite markers will provide useful tools for genetic improvement, variety identification, phylogenetic analysis and resource conservation. METHODS AND RESULTS: Within the genome sequence, 145,008 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were identified, and 29,691 primer pairs were designed successfully. A total of 100 primer pairs were randomly synthesized for testing, and 93 primers yielded products. Sixty highly polymorphic primers were used to reveal the genetic diversity of 50 T. dorsatus individuals. The average number of alleles (Na) of the population was 10.40; the average number of effective alleles was 6.16, the average expected heterozygosity (He) was 0.82, and the average polymorphic information content was 0.80. The genetic structure of the population was detected, by which the population could be divided into three subpopulations. CONCLUSION: We identified 145,008 SSRs in the genome of T. dorsatus and designed 29,691 primer pairs in this study. Of 100 synthesized primers, 60 were highly polymorphic and used to reveal the genetic diversity and structure of the population. The SSR markers identified here will provide useful tools and a foundation for genetic diversity, linkage mapping and molecular marker-aided breeding in T. dorsatus.

RESUMO

This paper studies the impact of lockdown measures in response to the outbreak of COVID-19 on a prefecture's air pollution in China. To avoid potential endogenous problems, we exploit the bilateral population flow from the Baidu Migration Index to predict prefectures' probability to undertake lockdown measures. Our results using difference-in-differences with the instrumental variable show that a prefecture's lockdown measures significantly reduce its air quality index (AQI) by around 35%, and yet the result for difference-in-differences with OLS is only around 11%. We also find that a prefecture under lockdown reduces its PM 10 and PM 2.5 by around 25% and 35% respectively, and the results of diff-in-diff with OLS are only around 11% and 12%. The sharp difference between these two approaches seems to imply that there is a strong heterogeneity in lockdown stringency across prefectures.
