RESUMO

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are ubiquitous in the natural environment and play a pivotal role in biogeochemical processes. However, the spatiotemporal distribution and production mechanisms of ROS in riparian soil remain unknown. Herein, we performed uninterrupted monitoring to investigate the variation of ROS at different soil sites of the Weihe River riparian zone throughout the year. Fluorescence imaging and quantitative analysis clearly showed the production and spatiotemporal variation of ROS in riparian soils. The concentration of superoxide (O2•-) was 300% higher in summer and autumn compared to that in other seasons, while the highest concentrations of 539.7 and 20.12 µmol kg-1 were observed in winter for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH), respectively. Spatially, ROS production in riparian soils gradually decreased along with the stream. The results of the structural equation and random forest model indicated that meteorological conditions and soil physicochemical properties were primary drivers mediating the seasonal and spatial variations in ROS production, respectively. The generated •OH significantly induced the abiotic mineralization of organic carbon, contributing to 17.5-26.4% of CO2 efflux. The obtained information highlighted riparian zones as pervasive yet previously underestimated hotspots for ROS production, which may have non-negligible implications for carbon turnover and other elemental cycles in riparian soils.

RESUMO

Biochar-bound persistent free radicals (biochar-PFRs) attract much attention because they can directly or indirectly mediate the transformation of contaminants in large-scale wastewater treatment processes. Despite this, a comprehensive top-down understanding of the redox activity of biochar-PFRs, particularly consumption and regeneration mechanisms, as well as challenges in redox activity assessment, is still lacking. To tackle this challenge, this review outlines the identification and determination methods of biochar-PFRs, which serve as a prerequisite for assessing the redox activity of biochar-PFRs. Recent developments concerning biochar-PFRs are discussed, with a main emphasis on the reaction mechanisms (both non-free radical and free radical pathways) and their effectiveness in removing contaminants. Importantly, the review delves into the mechanism of biochar-PFRs regeneration, triggered by metal cations, reactive oxygen species, and ultraviolet radiations. Furthermore, this review thoroughly explores the dilemma in appraising the redox activity of biochar-PFRs. Components with unpaired electrons (particular defects and metal ions) interfere with biochar-PFRs signals in electron paramagnetic resonance spectra. Scavengers and extractants of biochar-PFRs also inevitably modify the active ingredients of biochar. Based on these analyses, a practical strategy is proposed to precisely determine the redox activity of biochar-PFRs. Finally, the review concludes by presenting current gaps in knowledge and offering suggestions for future research. This comprehensive examination aims to provide new and significant insights into the redox activity of biochar-PFRs.

RESUMO

Substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (sub-PAHs) are receiving increased attention due to their high toxicity and ubiquitous presence. However, the accumulation behaviors of sub-PAHs in crop roots remain unclear. In this study, the accumulation mechanism of sub-PAHs in crop roots was systematically disclosed by hydroponic experiments from the perspectives of utilization, uptake, and elimination. The obtained results showed an interesting phenomenon that despite not having the strongest hydrophobicity among the five sub-PAHs, nitro-PAHs (including 9-nitroanthracene and 1-nitropyrene) displayed the strongest accumulation potential in the roots of legume plants, including mung bean and soybean. The nitrogen-deficient experiments, inhibitor experiments, and transcriptomics analysis reveal that nitro-PAHs could be utilized by legumes as a nitrogen source, thus being significantly absorbed by active transport, which relies on amino acid transporters driven by H+-ATPase. Molecular docking simulation further demonstrates that the nitro group is a significant determinant of interaction with an amino acid transporter. Moreover, the depuration experiments indicate that the nitro-PAHs may enter the root cells, further slowing their elimination rates and enhancing the accumulation potential in legume roots. Our results shed light on a previously unappreciated mechanism for root accumulation of sub-PAHs, which may affect their biogeochemical processes in soils.

RESUMO

Crop residue-derived carbon (C) emissions and priming effects (PE) in cropland soils can influence the global C cycle. However, their corresponding generality, driving factors, and responses to nitrogen (N) inputs are poorly understood. As a result, the total C emissions and net C balance also remain mysterious. To address the above knowledge gaps, a meta-analysis of 1123 observations, taken from 51 studies world-wide, has been completed. The results showed that within 360 days, emission ratios of crop residues C (ER) ranged from 0.22% to 61.80%, and crop residues generally induced positive PE (+71.76%). Comparatively, the contribution of crop residue-derived C emissions (52.82%) to total C emissions was generally higher than that of PE (12.08%), emphasizing the importance of reducing ER. The ER and PE differed among crop types, and both were low in the case of rice, which was attributed to its saturated water conditions. The ER and PE also varied with soil properties, as PE decreased with increasing C addition ratio in soils where soil organic carbon (SOC) was less than 10‰; in contrast, the opposite phenomenon was observed in soils with SOC exceeding 10‰. Moreover, N inputs increased ER and PE by 8.31% and 3.78%, respectively, which was predominantly attributed to (NH4 )2 SO4 . The increased PE was verified to be dominated by microbial stoichiometric decomposition. In summary, after incorporating crop residues, the total C emissions and relative net C balance in the cropland soils ranged from 0.03 to 23.47 mg C g-1 soil and 0.21 to 0.97 mg C g-1 residue-C g-1 soil, respectively, suggesting a significant impact on C cycle. These results clarify the value of incorporating crop residues into croplands to regulate global SOC dynamics and help to establish while managing site-specific crop return systems that facilitate C sequestration.

RESUMO

Metformin's effect on tumor treatment was complex, because it significantly reduced cancer cell proliferation in vitro, but made no difference in prognosis in several clinical cohorts. Our transcriptome sequencing results revealed that tumor-associated macrophage (TAM) infiltration significantly increased in active lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) patients with long-term metformin use. We further identified that the tumor suppressive effect of metformin was more significant in mice after the depletion of macrophages, suggesting that TAMs might play an important role in metformin's effects in LUAD. Combining 10X Genomics single-cell sequencing of tumor samples, transcriptome sequencing of metformin-treated TAMs, and the ChIP-Seq data of the Encode database, we identified and validated that metformin significantly increased the expression and secretion of S100A9 of TAMs through AMPK-CEBP/ß pathway. For the downstream, S100A9 binds to RAGE receptors on the surface of LUAD cells, and then activates the NF-κB pathway to promote EMT and progression of LUAD, counteracting the inhibitory effect of metformin on LUAD cells. In cell-derived xenograft models (CDX) and patient-derived xenograft models (PDX) models, our results showed that neutralizing antibodies targeting TAM-secreted S100A9 effectively enhanced the tumor suppressive effect of metformin in treating LUAD. Our results will enable us to better comprehend the complex role of metformin in LUAD, and advance its clinical application in cancer treatment.

RESUMO

The toxicity of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs), often generated during biochar production, on soil bacteria is still not truly reflected when considering the conditions in real soil. Herein, the influence of free radicals within biochar on soil bacteria was investigated from the perspectives of enzyme activity, community structure, and ecoenzymatic stoichiometry. Biochar addition enhanced the contents of EPFRs and derived hydroxyl radicals (•OH) in the soil, while it reduced bacterial alpha diversity by 5.06-35.44%. The results of redundancy analysis and inhibition experiments collectively demonstrated the key role of EPFRs and •OH in reducing the bacterial alpha diversity. Specifically, EPFRs and •OH increased the stoichiometric imbalance by promoting the release of dissolved organic carbon and ammonium N, thus aggravating the P limitation in soil. This was further confirmed by increased alkaline phosphatase activity from 702 to 874 nmol g-1 h-1. The P limitation induced by EPFRs and •OH decreased the bacterial alpha diversity, as evidenced by the negative correlation between P limitation and bacterial alpha diversity (r2 = -0.931 to -0.979, P < 0.01) and the structural equation model. The obtained results demonstrate a ubiquitous but previously overlooked mechanism for bacterial toxicity of biochar-associated free radicals, providing scientific guidance for safe utilization of biochar.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) becomes the first-line option for advanced tumors, while patients who are not sensitive to it may not benefit. Therefore, it is important to screen patients suitable for NACT. METHODS: Single-cell data of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and esophageal squamous carcinoma (ESCC) before and after cisplatin-containing (CDDP) NACT and cisplatin IC50 data of tumor cell lines were analyzed to establish a CDDP neoadjuvant chemotherapy score (NCS). Differential analysis, GO, KEGG, GSVA and logistic regression models were performed by R. Survival analysis were applied to public databases. siRNA knockdown in A549, PC9, TE1 cell lines, qRT-PCR, western-blot, cck8 and EdU experiments were used for further verification in vitro. RESULTS: 485 genes were expressed differentially in tumor cells before and after neoadjuvant treatment for LUAD and ESCC. After combining the CDDP-associated genes, 12 genes, CAV2, PHLDA1, DUSP23, VDAC3, DSG2, SPINT2, SPATS2L, IGFBP3, CD9, ALCAM, PRSS23, PERP, were obtained and formed the NCS score. The higher the score, the more sensitive the patients were to CDDP-NACT. The NCS divided LUAD and ESCC into two groups. Based on differentially expressed genes, a model was constructed to predict the high and low NCS. CAV2, PHLDA1, ALCAM, CD9, IGBP3 and VDAC3 were significantly associated with prognosis. Finally, we demonstrated that the knockdown of CAV2, PHLDA1 and VDAC3 in A549, PC9 and TE1 significantly increased the sensitivity to cisplatin. CONCLUSIONS: NCS scores and related predictive models for CDDP-NACT were developed and validated to assist in selecting patients who might benefit from it.

RESUMO

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are widely used as flame retardants and plasticizers in industrial and commercial products. It is generally believed that OPEs in street dust mainly originate from road traffic and anthropogenic activities. The influence of atmospheric deposition is still unknown. In this study, leaves were employed as a novel passive air sampler to collect particle matters (PM) in 12 cities in the central province of Henan, China. Similar compositional profiles of OPEs were found in street dust and PM samples. The concentrations of individual OPEs in PM were 1-4 times higher than in street dust. Chlorinated OPEs concentration in PM shows a moderate correlation (r2 = 0.538, p < 0.01) with that in street dust. The concentration of alkyl OPEs in PM has a high correlation (r2 = 0.843, p < 0.01) with that in street dust. No significant correlation (r2 = 0.133, p = 0.132) was found on the aryl OPEs concentrations between street dust and PM. Spearman correlation reveals that the emission sources of tricresyl phosphate (TCrP) and triethyl phosphate (TEP) may be different from other OPEs in dust and PM samples. Principle component analysis (PCA) provides an appropriate explanation that tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), triphenyl phosphate (TPhP), tris (chloropropyl) phosphate (TCPP), tributyl phosphate (TnBP), and TEP in street dust and PM may be emitted from the same sources, suggesting that PM has a significant influence on the occurrence of OPEs in street dust. The estimated dry deposition fluxes of particle-bound OPEs show a significant correlation (R2 = 0.969, p < 0.01) with OPEs concentrations in street dust, revealing that the input of atmospheric deposition could be a major source of OPEs in street dust.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Surgery is the most effective treatment for early-stage lung cancer. This study will propose a personalized plan for mediastinal lymph node dissection in early-stage lung adenocarcinoma to reduce the risk of surgery and improve the quality of life. METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed the patients underwent lobectomy and lymph node dissection in the Department of Thoracic Surgery, Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University. Clinical stage I lung adenocarcinoma patients with solid component ratio (CTR) between 0.5 and 1 were included. Patients were divided into systematic (S-MLND) and lobe-specific (L-MLND) mediastinal lymph node dissection groups. The days of hospitalization, the presence or absence of complications, the recurrence-free survival rate, and the overall survival rate were calculated to evaluate the postoperative quality and operation risk of the patients. RESULTS: 210 patients (138 L-MLND and 72 S-MLND) were included. 2 lymph node metastases appeared in the S-MLND group while none in the L-MLND group (P = .049). No differences were shown in age, tumor site, size, solid component, degree of tumor invasion, and stage. The proportion of patients with severe postoperative cough and the length of hospital stay in the L-MLND group decreased. The 5-year OS of the entire cohort was 98.1%, 98.6% in L-MLND, compared with 97.2% in S-MLND; RFS was 94.8%, 95.7% in L-MLND, compared with 93.0% in S-MLND. CONCLUSION: For cIA lung adenocarcinoma, according to the Thin-slice CT within 1 month before the operation, if the main lesion was less than 3 cm and CTR over 0.5, L-MLND is as effective as S-MLND.

RESUMO

Numerous micro-sized artificial turf fragments (MATF) and rubber particles (MRP) are generated and accumulated during the use of the artificial playing field. However, attention has rarely been paid to the potential toxic effects of MATF and MRP on sportsmen. In this study, the active components and chemical composition of aged MATF and MRP derived from laboratory photoaging and actual field sampling were detected, and their effects on cytotoxicity were examined correspondingly. Laboratory photoaging significantly increased environmental persistent free radicals (EPFRs), reactive oxygen species (ROS) abundances and oxidative potential (OP) levels on MATF and MRP, but they have limited cytotoxicity. Unfortunately, in the actual field, aged MATF and MRP with higher heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contents exhibited markedly higher cytotoxicity with the survival rate of cells of 78 % and 26 % (p < 0.05), although they had lower EPFRs and ROS yields. Correlation analysis revealed that the cell viability was closely linked to heavy metals of MATF (p < 0.05), and to organic hydroperoxide (OHP), PAHs and heavy metals of MRP (p < 0.05). By systematically considering the above results, heavy metals and PAHs enriched on MATF and MRP from the surrounding environment played the important role in the cytotoxicity, which was different from conventional perspectives. Our findings demonstrate that MATF and MRP associated with an artificial turf field contain potent mixtures of pollutants and can, therefore, be relevant yet underestimated factors contributing to the health risks.

RESUMO

In this study, the gas-phase retention volume behavior of four highly volatile organophosphate esters (OPEs) on polyurethane foam (PUF) was studied using a frontal chromatogram. The breakthrough volumes (VB) of trimethyl phosphate (TMP), triethyl phosphate (TEP), tripropyl phosphate (TPrP), and tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP) were 0.33, 0.59, 10.5, and 32.4 m3, respectively. A significant negative correlation was found between the logarithm value of VB and the subcooled liquid vapor pressure (PL) with an r2 of 0.905, indicating that the vapor penetration depends on both the volatility and total air volume. The enthalpy of desorption and vaporization (ΔHS-ΔHV) showed a significant difference between the tested OPEs and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), revealing that the strength of the sorption interaction of the tested OPEs vapor on PUF should be different from that of PAHs. The PUF-air partition coefficients (KPUF-air) of the tested OPEs ranged from 4.3 to 8.1, which were lower than those of three-to four-ring PAHs (7.02-10.2) and organochlorines (8.01-9.72), revealing that the partition of highly volatile OPEs on PUF is lower than that of low-volatile compounds. The PUF/XAD cartridge improved the absorption efficiency of the tested OPEs; however, its sorptive capacity was still limited.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to discuss the value of susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) in evaluating the ischemic penumbra of patients with acute cerebral ischemic stroke. METHODS: Data were collected from 52 patients with acute cerebral ischemic stroke upon clinical diagnosis and routine examinations of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), including SWI, diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), and perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI) within 72 hours after onset in this retrospective study. The methods also included fusing the DWI and SWI images and calculating the volume of anomaly extension of DWI and PWI-MTT (mean transit time) using semi-automatic analysis software. The SWI-DWI and PWI-DWI mismatches were interpreted, and the statistical analysis was completed. RESULTS: The two physicians found that the ischemic penumbra consistency is high throughout the SWI-DWI and PWI-DWI mismatches, without a significant difference (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: SWI-DWI mismatch can prevent the injection of contrast agents and make an accurate diagnosis of acute stroke ischemic penumbra, which helps guide the selection of the clinical therapeutic plan.

RESUMO

Six organophosphate esters (OPEs) with different octanol-air partition coefficient (KOA) were measured from gas and particle samples collected from an urban area of Central China between June 2018 and May 2019. The highest concentration of total OPEs (∑6OPEs) in total suspended particle (TSP) were found in winter, followed by spring, autumn, and summer. ∑6OPEs showed significant positive correlation with TSP concentration (p < 0.01), significant negative correlation with temperature (p < 0.01), weak negative linear correlations with relative humility (p < 0.05), and no significant correlations with wind speed (p > 0.05). Although OPEs were not detected in polyurethane foams (PUFs), the poly-parameter linear free energy relationship model (pp-LFER) estimated particle fractions of OPEs (fpart pp-LFERg/p) were below 2.73% for Tris (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP), Tris (chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), and Tributyl phosphate (TnBP); 67.8% for Triphenyl phosphate (TPhP); and above 99.6% for TBOEP and TCrP. The concentrations of particle-bound TPhP, TCrP, and TBOEP estimated by pp-LFER (Cpart pp-LFERg/p) were 0.19, 0.09, and 0.05 ng/m3, which were in good agreement with measurements. However, the estimated Cpart pp-LFERg/p of TCEP, TCIPP, and TnBP showed obvious differences with measured data. According to filter-air partitioning estimated by pp-LFER, the strong adsorption of gaseous OPEs to glass fiber filter (GFF) may be responsible to the underestimation. Besides, the weak adsorption of gaseous OPEs to PUF is likely to be another important reason for the discrepancy between measured and modeled results. Therefore, the risk assessment of gaseous OPEs should be of concern in the further research.

RESUMO

Japanese encephalitis (JE) poses a serious threat to the world's public health yet without a cure, the only way to prevent Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) infection is vaccination. Live attenuated vaccine (SA14-14-2 strain) is the most widely used JE vaccine, and clinical data have confirmed its safety and effectiveness. Eight sitesassociated with virulence in the Envelope (E) protein are often the focus of quality control of JE vaccine. However, sequences retrieved from NCBI, as well as our previous results showed that the wild strain SA14 may harbor two different amino acids at amino acid residue 244 of the E glycoprotein (E244), and it may be related to virulence. In this study, we introduced a single mutation at nt1708 (G â†’ A) in the full-length cDNA clone of SA14-14-2, replacing a Gly with Glu at amino acid residue 244 of the E glycoprotein, and successfully constructed the mutant virus (JEV E244). JEV E244 exhibited a similar plaque morphology and growth characteristics to JEV SA14-14-2 in cell culture. However, it had lethal neurovirulence in mice and could enter the brain following intraperitoneal inoculation. Moreover, the virulence of JEV E244 in the context of vaccine in mice is significantly different from that of the JEV E244 alone. These results suggested that E244 site should be included in the assessment of the genetic stability of the attenuated JE vaccine. The detection of minor mutations in vaccine population and influence on the safety of vaccine is discussed.

RESUMO

Land application is suggested to be the most economical sludge disposal method but is also a potential source of bisphenol analogs (BPs) to the environment. In this study, BP concentrations in sewage sludge from Henan province ranged from 15.1 to 2237 ng g-1 dw. BPA was dominant with mean concentration of 140 ng g-1 dw, followed by BPS (mean 43.4 ng g-1 dw), BPF (mean 7.98 ng g-1 dw), BPAF (mean 1.04 ng g-1 dw), BPAP (mean 0.88 ng g-1 dw), BPB (mean 0.38 ng g-1 dw), and BPZ (mean 0.33 ng g-1 dw). Apart from BPB, no significant correlations were found between BPs and wastewater treatment plants characteristics, probably because adsorption does not play a major role in the removal of BPs. The estimated total emission flux of BPs from sludge-amended soils are approximately 62.7 kg year-1. BPA is the largest contributor with emission flux of 45.3 kg year-1. Hazard quotient values for BPs in sludge-amended soils are 3-6 orders of magnitude lower than 1 with total 17ß-estradiol equivalents ranging from 0.33 to 26.8 pg g-1 E2EQ dw. Overall, although being partially replaced by other analogs, BPA is still widely used in Henan province.

RESUMO

In this study, nine OPEs were measured in 60 street dust samples collected from the central province of Henan, China. The total concentrations of OPEs (∑9OPEs) in street dust range from 2.77 to 505 µg/kg (median 59.3 µg/kg). Chlorinated OPEs are dominant in street dust with median concentration of 33.5 µg/kg, followed by aryl OPEs (median 9.05 µg/kg), and alkyl OPEs (median 6.19 µg/kg). No significant correlations are found between ∑9OPEs and parameters, such as population (p = 0.931), population density (p = 0.602), car ownership (p = 0.618), and gross domestic product (p = 0.863). Principal component analysis (PCA) result reveals that road traffic could be a major source of OPEs in street dust because of their extensive use in various vehicles. The total average (median) and high-level exposure (95th percentile) of OPEs are 1.01 × 10-2, 7.17 × 10-2 ng/kg bw/d for adults and 6.03 × 10-2, 0.43 ng/kg bw/d for children, respectively. Hazard quotient (HQ) values are 5-6 orders of magnitude lower than the acceptable risk level (HQ < 0.1), indicating there is still a low risk to local residents at current levels.

RESUMO

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are widely used as flame retardants and plasticizers in industry and daily life, but the partition of OPEs to particles is still unclear because of the wide range of their physicochemical properties. In this study, six target OPEs with different vapor pressures (log PL) were measured from 30 total suspended particulate (TSP) samples collected from an urban area of Zhengzhou from June to November in 2018. The total concentration of OPEs ranged from 0.30 to 3.46 ng/m3, with average concentration of 1.04 ng/m3. Tris (chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP), and tributyl phosphate (TnBP) were most abundant in TSP, accounting for approximately 86.0% to the total OPEs. The temporal variations showed a specific trend that OPE concentrations in TSP were much higher in autumn than those of summer. Significant positive correlations were observed between TSP concentration in air and the total concentration of OPEs in TSP, with r up to 0.596. Particle concentrations caused major changes on OPE concentrations in TSP with octanol-air partition coefficient (log KOA) between 7.7 and 10 but had no significant influence on the OPEs with log KOA higher than 12. Temperature had significant influence on the total and individual OPEs with high vapor pressures (log PL > -4.0), indicating that log KOA and log PL had significant influence on the OPE concentrations in TSP and may be one of the key factors on their temporal variations. Temperature had significant influence on OPE concentrations in TSP due to the strong temperature dependency of log KOA and log PL. No significant relationships were found between the wind speed and OPE concentrations in TSP, suggesting that OPEs detected in TSP might be emitted from the local sources. The hazards quotient (HQ) values were 6-8 orders of magnitude lower than 1, indicating that there was a low risk to local residents from the exposure to OPEs in TSP. This study preliminarily illuminates the potential affecting factors on the temporal variations of OPEs in TSP. It would be helpful for investigating the gas-particle partitioning behaviors and human health risks of OPEs in air.

RESUMO

Yellow fever (YF) is an acute viral haemorrhagic disease caused by the yellow fever virus (YFV), which remains a potential threat to public health. The live-attenuated YF vaccine (17D strain) is a safe and highly effective measure against YF. However, increasing adverse events have been associated with YF vaccinations in recent years; thus, safer, alternative vaccines are needed. In this study, using the Japanese encephalitis live vaccine strain SA14-14-2 as a backbone, a novel chimeric virus was constructed by replacing the pre-membrane (prM) and envelope (E) genes with their YFV 17D counterparts. The chimeric virus exhibited a reduced growth rate and a much smaller plaque morphology than did either parental virus. Furthermore, the chimera was much less neurovirulent than was YF17D and protected mice that were challenged with a lethal dose of the YF virus. These results suggest that this chimera has potential as a novel attenuated YF vaccine.

RESUMO

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are widely used as flame retardants and plasticizers in many products and materials. Because of the potential biologic toxicity on human beings, OPEs are regarded as a class of emerging pollutants. Dissolved organic matters (DOM) have significant effects on the bioavailability and toxicity of the pollutants in the environment. Negligible-depletion solid-phase microextraction (nd-SPME) is an efficient way for measuring the freely dissolved pollutants but suffers from long equilibrium time. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous crystalline materials with unique properties such as high pore volume, regular porosity, and tunable pore size, being widely used for the extraction of various organic compounds. Here we developed a novel method for quick determination the sorption coefficients of OPEs to DOM in aquatic phase using Fe3O4@MIL-100 (Fe) core-shell magnetic microspheres. The mesoporous structures of the as-synthesized microspheres hindered the extraction of OPEs which associated with humic acid due to the volume exclusion effect. However, the freely dissolved OPEs can access into the mesoporous and then were extracted by MIL-100 (Fe). Due to the small pore size (4.81 nm), large surface area (141 m2 g-1), high pore volume (0.17 g3 g-1), and ultra-thin MOFs layers, Fe3O4@MIL-100 (Fe) core-shell magnetic microspheres have large contact area for the analytes in aqueous phase and therefore the diffusion distance was largely shortened. Besides, the microspheres can be collected conveniently after the extraction process by applying a magnetic field. Compared to the nd-SPME method with 35 h equilibration time (t90%), the proposed method for these studied OPEs only need 24 min to achieve equilibration. The sorption coefficients (logKDOC) of the OPEs to humic acid were ranged from 3.84-5.28, which were highly consistent with the results by using polyacrylate-coated fiber and polydimethylsiloxane-coated fiber with nd-SPME.
