RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Few studies have prospectively examined psychosocial and psychiatric predictors of adolescent substance use disorders simultaneously. AIMS: To identify psychosocial and psychiatric predictors of substance use disorders in adolescence. METHOD: School children aged 12 years (s.d.=0.3) free from any substance use disorder at grade 7 (n=428) were assessed in three consecutive years, using a standardised psychiatric interview. Their baseline psychosocial information was also collected. The outcome was the onset age of a substance use disorder. The Cox regression model was used for data analysis. RESULTS: The most significant predictive factors for adolescent substance use disorder included male gender, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorder and sibling use of tobacco. Three protective factors against such morbidity included living in a household with two parents, a good academic grade at grade 7 and objection to the use of substances. CONCLUSIONS: Early intervention for disruptive behaviour disorders and specific psychosocial risk factors might prevent substance use disorders in early adolescence.

RESUMO

A plasma progesterone profile obtained from three consecutive blood samples with an interval of 7 days was evaluated for usefulness as the basis for the diagnosis and treatment of anestrous gilts and sows. Four reproductive statuses were categorized based on the plasma progesterone levels and pathological examination of the reproductive organs from 25 gilts and 12 sows with anestrus. Category 1: fluctuating (at least one sample <2.5 ng/ml and one >10 ng/ml) with normal ovary; Category 2: sustained low (<2.5 ng/ml) with inactive ovary; Category 3: persistent high (>5 ng/ml) with normal sized or cystic corpora lutea; and Category 4: animals not included in the categories mentioned, such as pigs with luteinized cysts and follicular cysts. Using the plasma progesterone profiles and this categorization, the reproductive status of 54 gilts and 38 sows with anestrus was predicted. Hormonal treatments were performed with moderate to high success. Results from this study indicate that plasma progesterone profiles can be useful for the determination of estrus status, for the diagnosis of the causes of anestrus, and for the prediction of the next estrus for an appropriate hormonal treatment in anestrous gilts and sows.

RESUMO

Baculovirus-expressed foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) nonstructural protein 3AB was used as the antigen in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. This assay allowed the differentiation of vaccinated from infected pigs. Serial studies were performed using sera collected from pigs in the field. Positive reactions were found in sera from fattening pigs and sows 16 weeks and 3.5 years postoutbreak, respectively. There was, however, no positive reaction in sows with at least 10 vaccinations. Maternally derived antibodies to the 3AB antigen persisted in piglets up to 13 weeks of age. A high correlation coefficient (r = 0.93) was found between the test results from sow sera and those from their offspring. Therefore, piglet serum was a good substitute for sow serum to monitor the infection status of the dam. The application of this assay to serological surveillance in an FMD eradication program in Taiwan showed that the positive reactors steadily decreased over time in both finishers and sows, indicating that the pig population risk of infection by FMDV has decreased.
