RESUMO

The intermediate-band solar cell (IBSC) with quantum dots and a bulk semiconductor matrix has potential for high power conversion efficiency, exceeding the Shockley-Queisser limit. However, the IBSCs reported to date have been fabricated only by dry process and their efficiencies are limited, because their photo-absorption layers have low particle density of quantum dots, defects due to lattice strain, and low bandgap energy of bulk semiconductors. Here we present solution-processed IBSCs containing photo-absorption layers where lead sulfide quantum dots are densely dispersed in methylammonium lead bromide perovskite matrices with a high bandgap energy of 2.3 eV under undistorted conditions. We confirm that the present IBSCs exhibit two-step photon absorption via intermediate-band at room temperature by inter-subband photocurrent spectroscopy.

RESUMO

Seawater bittern (nigari) is a concentrated solution remaining after the crystallization process of salt that has been used as a coagulant for tofu. Recently, various nigari products are distributed in the East Asia. To clarify the properties of nigari products, major mineral composition of six nigari products was determined. Then, effects of the nigari on the browning and antioxidant activity during the glucose/lysine Maillard reaction were investigated. Though the predominant cation was Mg(2+), the content was varied by each product (0.88-6.49 mol/L). The other major ion contents were also varied. Each 0.5 mol/L of D-glucose and L-lysine were incubated with the nigari (5-50% (v/v)) or nigari-related salts (1 or 2 mol/L). The browning (OD at 465 nm) and antioxidant activity (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging capacity and ferrous-reducing power) were increased remarkably by the nigari containing high Mg(2+) content. The browning tended to be high with sulfates (Na2SO4, (NH4)2SO4). On the other hand, high content of MgCl2 decreased slightly the browning and antioxidant activity. These results suggest that the reaction and antioxidant activities were affected not only by salinity and cations but also by anions and other elements in the nigari.

RESUMO

The reaction between an Fe(III) complex and O(2) to afford a stable catalytically active diiron(IV)-mu-oxo compound is described. Phosphonium salts of orange five-coordinated Fe(III)-TAML complexes with an axial aqua ligand ([PPh(4)]1-H(2)O, tetraamidato macrocyclic Fe(III) species derived from 3,3,6,6,9,9-hexamethyl-3,4,8,9-tetrahydro-1H-1,4,8,11-benzotetraazacyclotridecine-2,5,7,10(6H,11H)-tetraone) react rapidly with O(2) in CH(2)Cl(2) or other weakly coordinating solvents to produce black mu-oxo-bridged diiron(IV) complexes, 2, in high yields. Complexes 2 have been characterized by X-ray crystallography (2 cases), microanalytical data, mass spectrometry, UV/Vis, Mossbauer, and (1)H NMR spectroscopies. Mossbauer data show that the diamagnetic Fe-O-Fe unit contains antiferromagnetically coupled S = 1 Fe(IV) sites; diamagnetic (1)H NMR spectra are observed. The oxidation of PPh(3) to OPPh(3) by 2 was confirmed by UV/Vis and GC-MS. Labeling experiments with (18)O(2) and H(2)(18)O established that the bridging oxygen atom of 2 derives from O(2). Complexes 2 catalyze the selective oxidation of benzylic alcohols into the corresponding aldehydes and bleach rapidly organic dyes, such as Orange II in MeCN-H(2)O mixtures; reactivity evidence suggests that free radical autoxidation is not involved. This work highlights a promising development for the advancement of green oxidation technology, as O(2) is an abundant, clean, and inexpensive oxidizing agent.

RESUMO

Antihyperlipidemia or hypocholesterolaemic and antibacterial activities of red hot pepper and garlic are well known. To determine the effect of the dietary spices ingested to suppress blood lipids on the intestinal condition, we examined plasma lipid levels and cecal microflora in mice that were fed diets containing 19% (w/w) beef tallow and 2% red pepper Capsicum annuum var. conoides 'Takanotume' (RP) or garlic Allium sativum 'White' (GP) for 4-weeks. Plasma triacylglyceride level was suppressed by the spices. RP lowered cecal bacteroidaceae, a predominant bacterial group (from 9.4 to 9.0 log CFU/g), bifidobacteria (from 8.7 to 7.6 log CFU/g), and staphylococci. Although GP increased the cecal weight including their contents, significant differences were not shown in the cecal microflora. These results suggest that RP can affect the intestinal condition and host health through the disturbance of intestinal microflora.

RESUMO

Volatile compounds from the headspace gas of ten brands of the Japanese fish sauce ishiru were analyzed by GC-MS with a thermal-desorption cold-trap system. Many volatile peaks were detected and 51 compounds were identified. The major volatile compounds in ishiru included aldehydes (such as 2-methylpropanal, 2-methylbutanal, 3-methylbutanal, and benzaldehyde), nitrogen-containing compounds (such as pyrazine derivatives and trimethylamine), sulfur-containing compounds (such as dimethyl disulfide), and ketones (such as 2-butanone and 3-methyl-2-butanone). On the other hand, volatile fatty acids were nearly absent in the headspace gas of ishiru.
