RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study the safety and efficacy of simultaneous completion of colorectal cancer resection and liver metastasis resection by total laparoscopy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In the observation group, 40 patients with colorectal cancer combined with liver metastasis (CRCLM) were selected to receive total laparoscopic surgery. At the same time, 40 cases were selected for laparoscopic resection of colorectal cancer and hepatic resection as control group. RESULTS: The outcomes of the two methods in the treatment of CRCLM were compared. The results showed that the difference in surgery time between the two groups was not statistically significant (p>0.05). The blood loss, drainage tube retention time and anal exhaust recovery time in the observation group were significantly less than those in control group (p<0.05). No significant difference in completion rate was found between the two groups (p>0.05); the prevalence rate of complications in the observation group was significantly lower than that in control group (p<0.05). No significant differences in the median survival period and the survival rate at 1 year, 2 years and 3 years after surgery were found between the two groups (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The outcomes of total laparoscopy in the treatment of CRCLM are not inferior to open surgery.

RESUMO

Primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) of the liver remains extremely rare with only several cases having been reported in literature. We report a case of hepatic MFH in a 53-year-old man who presented with upper abdominal pain, and weight loss for one month. Ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) scan showed a large mass with fine tumor vessels over the left lobe of the liver. Histopathological findings indicated a mesenchymal tumor consisting of spindle cells in storiform pattern intermingled with histiocyte-like cells and giant cells. Immunohistochemically, most tumor cells expressed vimentin, alpha-1 anti-chymotrypsin, alpha-1 antitrypsin and CD68. Morphological and immunohistochemical findings support that the tumor should be classified as a primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma. The literatures is briefly reviewed.

RESUMO

Although interracial differences of prostate cancer progression are well recognized, their underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms remain obscure. We compared the histopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular characteristics of unselected prostate cancer tissues obtained from U.S., Chinese, and Japanese men. Histopathologic analyses indicated that 74.4% of the prostate cancers in Chinese men were poorly differentiated, compared with 28.6% and 32.8% of the prostate cancers in U.S. and Japanese men, respectively. These differences cannot be attributed to patient age, clinical stage of disease, or methods of tissue sampling. The high proportion of poorly differentiated prostate cancer tissues in the Chinese group was not related to the patients' access to medical service or to geographic background within China. Significantly higher levels of tumor angiogenesis (2- to 4-fold), serotonin (2- to 20-fold), and bombesin (7- to 16-fold), but not chromogranin A, were found in the tissue specimens obtained from Chinese prostate cancer patients compared with those from U.S. and Japanese patients. We also observed marked interracial differences in p53 protein accumulation. The protein was present in 90.2% of Chinese specimens; 17.4% of specimens from U.S. whites; 7.1% of specimens from Japanese men; and 3.7% of specimens from U.S. blacks. Results from multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that p53 protein accumulation, angiogenesis, and serotonin expression in the normal stroma area correlate independently with Chinese versus non-Chinese patient populations.

RESUMO

The present study is to investigate the pathological changes in the epididymis of the rats within a period of 90 days after third degree phosphorus burns involving 30% of TBSA. By light microscopy and electron microscopy and histochemistry, varying degrees of degeneration and necrosis of epididymal epithelial cells, peritubular tissues and luminal spermatozoa and degenerative spermatid were found. The occurrence and development of all these changes might be divided into: the initiation and reaction phase of injury; the advanced phase; and the recovering phase. It is considered that epididymal tissue damage in advanced phase is so extensive and severe that the morphological, physiological and metabolic maturation of the spermatozoa may be affected, and the storing function of the epididymis as well. With the recovery of the burns, there was repair of the damaged tissues, and it could be inferred that the effect of phosphorus burns on the long-term reproductive capacity of male animals is probably mild.
