RESUMO

A proficiency test amongst 15 Turkish laboratories with participation of 5 non-Turkish laboratories was organized to determine the 137Cs, 40K and 90Sr massic activities in black tea powder samples. The bulk material, consisting of tea produced in 2014, was mixed with contaminated tea that was withdrawn from the market after the Chernobyl accident. Nineteen laboratories reported 41 results. The evaluation of the results was based on the accuracy and precision criteria adopted by the IAEA Proficiency Testing Group and resulted in 49% acceptable results, 19% acceptable with warning and 32% were found to be not acceptable.

RESUMO

An international key comparison, identifier CCRI(II)-K2.Ge-68, has been performed. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) served as the pilot laboratory, distributing aliquots of a 68Ge/68Ga solution. Results for the activity concentration, CA, of 68Ge at a reference date of 12h00 UTC 14 November 2014 were submitted by 17 laboratories, encompassing many variants of coincidence methods and liquid-scintillation counting methods. The first use of 4π(Cherenkov)ß-γ coincidence and anticoincidence methods in an international comparison is reported. One participant reported results by secondary methods only. Two results, both utilizing pure liquid-scintillation methods, were identified as outliers. Evaluation using the Power-Moderated Mean method results in a proposed Comparison Reference Value (CRV) of 621.7(11)kBqg-1, based on 14 results. The degrees of equivalence and their associated uncertainties are evaluated for each participant. Several participants submitted 3.6mL ampoules to the BIPM to link the comparison to the International Reference System (SIR) which may lead to the evaluation of a Key Comparison Reference Value and associated degrees of equivalence.

RESUMO

This study is the review of the first proficiency test on radioactivity measurement organized in Turkey by Sarayköy Nuclear Research and Training Center (SANAEM) of Turkish Atomic Energy Authority (TAEK) in 2013. The objective of the test was to determine (226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K activity concentrations in natural soil samples using gamma-ray spectrometry. The bulk material consisting of uranium- and thorium-rich soil and sand was milled, mixed thoroughly and sieved. Homogeneity of the final mix was tested with 6 randomly taken samples. 16 proficiency test samples were distributed to 16 participating laboratories. 12 laboratories reported results. The results were evaluated on the accuracy and precision criteria adopted by the IAEA Proficiency Testing Group. The percentage of acceptable scores was 49%. Some recommendations have been provided to the laboratories to improve the quality of their results. It is planned to extend these proficiency tests periodically for various radionuclides in various matrices.

RESUMO

The half-life of (177)Lu was measured by following the decay of sources with an ionisation chamber and with a liquid scintillation counter over a period of 85 and 42 days, respectively. The detector signals showed three major components: decay of (177)Lu, decay of (177m)Lu and the background signal. The half-life value, T(1/2)((177)Lu)=6.6465 (50)d, was obtained by a least-squares fit of two exponential decay functions and a constant background to the experimental data. The data was corrected for decay during the measurements. Residuals of the fit and uncertainty budgets are presented in this paper. The result is in agreement with three out of seven previously published measurement results and the currently recommended value of 6.647 (4) d (Kondev, 2002). A new value of T(1/2)((177)Lu)=6.6465 (32) d was obtained from a weighted mean of our results with the selected literature data.

RESUMO

A total of 77 coal, slag and fly ash samples collected from six thermal power plants were measured by gamma-ray spectrometry. The average (226)Ra activity concentrations in coal, slag and fly ash were measured as 199.8±16.7, 380.3±21.8 and 431.5±29.0 Bq kg(-1), respectively. The average (232)Th activity concentrations in coal, slag and fly ash were measured as 32.0±2.4, 74.0±9.0 and 87.3±9.8 Bq kg(-1), respectively. The average (40)K activity concentrations in coal, slag and fly ash were found to be 152.8±12.1, 401.3±25.0 and 439.0±30.2 Bq kg(-1), respectively. The radium equivalent activities of samples varied from 147.6±8.5 to 1077.4±53.3 Bq kg(-1). The gamma and alpha index of one thermal power plant's fly ash were calculated to be 3.5 and 5 times higher than that of the reference values. The gamma absorbed dose rates were found to be higher than that of the average Earth's crust. The annual effective dose of residues measured in four thermal power plants were calculated higher than that of the permitted dose rate for public, i.e. 1 mSv y(-1).
