RESUMO

AIM: The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between dental caries and obesity in preschool children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 329 preschool children were recruited from nine day care centers. A qualified dentist examined the oral health of each child and a caries score was recorded. Anthropometric measurements included body weight, height, triceps skinfold thickness, and body fat. Body mass index, and weight-for-height index were calculated. Parents or guardians answered a questionnaire regarding their children's dietary patterns, oral hygiene habits, and medical history, as well as parental practices and attitudes towards their children's oral health. RESULTS: The prevalence of dental caries was 73% in this study. Fourteen percent of the children were overweight or obese. The caries scores were not significantly different according to weight-for-height index categories. After taking into account important factors in the multiple regression models, body mass index and weight-for-height index, respectively, were not significantly associated with dental caries. CONCLUSION: This study showed that obesity was not significantly associated with dental caries in preschool children.

Carbonization is the first step in the heat and pressure treatment (pyrolysis) of composites in preparing carbon-carbon parts. These find many uses, including aircraft brakes, rocket nozzles and medical implants. This paper describes the acoustic emissions (AE) from various stages of the manufacturing process of carbon-carbon composites. This process involves carbonization at a high temperature and this results in both thermal expansion and volume change (due to pyrolysis in which a sacrificial polymer matrix is converted to carbon). Importantly the resultant matrix is porous and has a network of small intra-lamina cracks. The formation of these microcracks produces AE and this paper describes how this observation can be used to monitor (and eventually control) the manufacturing process. The aim is to speed up manufacture, which is currently time-consuming. The first section of the paper describes the design of unimodal waveguides to enable the AE to propagate to a cool environment where a transducer can be located. The second part of the paper describes various experimental observations of AE under a range of process conditions. In particular, this paper presents a technique based on detecting acoustic emissions and (1) uses wire waveguides to monitor parts within the autoclave to 800 degrees C, (2) monitors microcracking during pyrolysis, (3) uses a four-level threshold to distinguish between low- and high-amplitude cracking events, (4) recognizes the occurrence of harmful delaminations, and (5) guides the control of the heating rate for optimum efficiency of the pyrolysis process. In addition, supporting data are presented of in situ measurements of porosity, weight loss, cross-ply shrinkage, and mass spectroscopy of gases emitted. The process evolution is illustrated by the use of interrupted manufacturing cycle micrographs obtained by optical, scanning acoustic (SAM) and scanning electron (SEM) microscopy. The technique promotes in-process monitoring and control but also contributes to current understanding of pyrolysis.

Malnutrition is a common problem in hospitalized patients. Early assessment of nutritional status may help in identifying patients for whom nutritional interventions are needed. The purpose of this study was to assess and compare the nutritional status of mechanically ventilated critically ill patients who were receiving nutritional support. Forty-nine patients were divided into either enteral nutrition, total parenteral nutrition or combined (enteral plus total parenteral nutrition) groups. Anthropometric and biochemical measurements, and medical status (APACHE II score) were assessed at the 1st day and 14th day of admission in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Taichung Veteran General Hospital. The length of ventilator dependency was significantly positively correlated with calorie and carbohydrate intake in the pooled group. Patients receiving enteral and combined nutrition showed significantly lower anthropometric measurements at the 14th day after admission. Patients in all groups had abnormal mean biochemical values at the 1st day of admission. Subjects in the combined group showed a significant increase in prealbumin and the Maastricht Index levels after 14 days. Patients in all three groups were malnourished when admitted to the ICU. Patients showed a slightly improvement of nutritional status after receiving nutritional support for 14 days.

Each EEG performed over a 3 year period at the University of Michigan with a diagnosis of generalized burst-suppression (BS) was reviewed. Ten EEGs from 10 patients with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE-BS) and 21 records from 8 patients with pentobarbital induced burst-suppression for treatment of status epilepticus (SE-BS) were reviewed. For each EEG, the mean duration of 40 interburst intervals (IBIs) as well as their coefficient of variability were calculated. We found that in the SE-BS group the coefficient of variability of IBI duration was highly correlated with the logarithm of mean IBI duration while in the HIE-BS group, there was no significant correlation between these 2 variables. This suggests that the underlying mechanism causing BS is different in the 2 groups and might be related to a uniform and progressive affection of similar brain structures in the SE-BS group and a more patchy and variable pathology in the HIE-BS group.

The sequence of 15,441 nucleotides from the adenovirus-2 genome has been determined and includes the regions between coordinates 0-32% and 89-100%. These regions contain the early (E) transcription units E1A, E1B, E2B, and E4, the genes for polypeptides IVa2 and IX, the COOH terminus of fiber polypeptide, as well as the two virus-associated RNAs and the leader sequences for the major late mRNAs. Analysis of tryptic peptides from the terminal protein and its precursor (Smart, J. E., and Stillman, B. W. (1982) J. Biol. Chem. 257, 13499-13506) has allowed the gene for the precursor terminal protein to be positioned between coordinates 28.0 and 23.5 on the 1-strand. A minimum Mr = 74,500 is predicted. A second, longer open reading frame is also found on the 1-strand between coordinates 22.9 and 14.2 and predicts a polypeptide of at least Mr = 120,000. Many open reading frames longer than 10,000 exist within this sequence although less than half of them can be assigned to previously characterized polypeptides. As with other viral genomes, the available coding information is highly compressed. Intergenic distances are very short and examples are found of genes which overlap either on the same strand or the complementary strand.
