RESUMO

An appropriate drying method is crucial for producing high-quality dried apricots. In this study, the effects of four drying methods, hot air drying (HAD), infrared drying (IRD), pulse vacuum drying (PVD), and vacuum freeze-drying (VFD), on the drying kinetics and physical and nutritional characteristics of apricot slices were evaluated. PVD required the shortest time (16.25 h), followed by IRD (17.54 h), HAD (21.39 h), and VFD (34.64 h). VFD resulted in the best quality of apricot slices, with the smallest color difference (ΔE = 13.64), lowest water activity (0.312 ± 0.015) and browning degree (0.35), highest color saturation (62.84), lowest hardness (8.35 ± 0.47 N) and shrinkage (9.13 ± 0.65%), strongest rehydration ability (3.58 ± 0.11 g/g), a good microstructure, and high nutrient-retention rates (ascorbic acid content: 53.31 ± 0.58 mg/100 g, total phenolic content: 12.64 ± 0.50 mg GAE/g, and carotenoid content: 24.23 ± 0.58 mg/100 g) and antioxidant activity (DPPH: 21.10 ± 0.99 mmol Trolox/g and FRAP: 34.10 ± 0.81 mmol Trolox/g). The quality of PVD-treated apricot slices was second-best, and the quality of HAD-treated apricot slices was the worst. However, the energy consumption required for VFD was relatively high, while that required for PVD was lower. The results of this study provide a scientific basis for the large-scale industrial production of dried apricots.

RESUMO

Dry processing is ineffective in preserving fresh jujubes (Zizyphus jujuba Mill.), contributing largely to the delayed jujube harvest in Xinjiang. However, no studies have evaluated the impact of delayed harvest periods on processing quality. Therefore, the present study investigated the effects of different delayed harvest periods on the characteristics of the quality of jujubes in Xinjiang after hot air drying. Six batches (S1-S6) were sampled over a 7-d period. Various indicators of jujubes changed significantly during the extended harvest period (P < 0.05). The water content of the fruit decreased progressively. While the percentages of soluble solids, total sugars, and reducing sugars increased continuously, the total weight of these parameters in a single jujube fruit decreased continuously. The proportion of ascorbic acid, total weight, and drying time decreased steadily. The fruit had the highest ascorbic acid content at the S4 stage after hot air drying (87.14 mg 100 g-1). Fewer color differences were recorded in hot air-dried fruits as compared with fresh jujubes; the cracking rate decreased after hot air drying, but the fruit could be rehydrated more effectively. A comprehensive evaluation revealed that jujubes harvested in the S4 stage were better suited for dry processing.

RESUMO

RATIONALE: Anorectal malignant melanoma regularly exhibits a biological aggressive behavior which is metastasizing to lung, bone, brain or other organs and tissues early in the course of the disease. Compared with melanoma in the other parts of the body, anorectal malignant melanoma is relatively rare. Metastatic to the breast tissue from anorectal malignant melanoma or from other extra-mammary tumors are very rare. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report the case of a 65-year-old female who suffering from anorectal malignant melanoma and implemented complete surgical resection. Two years later, a space-occupying lesion in the outer upper quadrant of the right breast was observed on a chest CT. DIAGNOSIS: The right breast was excised, and breast metastasis of anorectal malignant melanoma was histologically confirmed. INTERVENTIONS: Radical mastectomy of the right breast was performed, and no lymph nodes or other metastases were observed. OUTCOMES: The patient's operative course was uneventful. The patient completely recovered and transfers to the oncology department for further treatment. LESSON: The patient presented with an isolated breast tumor. Duo to Malignant melanoma could mimic many kind of poorly differentiated tumors, it is difficult to diagnose accurately, especially when it appears as an isolated mammary tumor. Because of the treatment measures and prognosis between malignant melanoma and breast cancer are entirely different.

RESUMO

Among the diseases of the digestive system, the incidence of acute pancreatitis (AP) has increased. Although the AP is primarily self-limited, mortality remains high when it progressed to severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). Despite significant advances in new drug development, treatments for AP are not ideal. Here, we discovered a novel hydroxycinnamic acid, sinapic acid (SA), which is widely distributed in plants and is an effective treatment for AP. Using in vitro and in vivo models, we demonstrated that pretreatment with SA ameliorated cerulein-induced pancreatic damage and inflammation and inhibited the activation of Caspase-1 and Caspase-11, which mediate pyroptosis of pancreatic acinar cells during AP. These effects may occur through the inhibition of AMPK phosphorylation and downregulation of NF-[Formula: see text]B. Our findings demonstrate the therapeutic effects and reveal the underlying mechanisms of SA, which warrants its further study as an effective treatment for AP.

RESUMO

To solve the problem of soil salination and to desalinate saline−alkaline water in arid areas, this study involved the design and testing of a separation and desalination device for farmland saline−alkaline water that is suitable for arid areas. The results of this study indicate that after the pretreatment of farmland saline−alkaline water, the water yielded by the pretreatment device had a mean turbidity of <1 and a mean silt density index (SDI) of <3, which met the working conditions of nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. When used to filter saline−alkaline water, the composite NF−RO membrane system achieved a desalination rate of 97.06%, a total hardness removal rate of 97.83%, and a Cl− removal rate of 99.65%, which satisfied the standard for irrigation water quality. Some indicators of the yielded water reached the hygienic standard for drinking water, thus successfully reutilizing water resources. The circulating solar collector tube of the device was designed with a collection area of 6 m2, which could basically satisfy the heat demand of the flash tank for distillation. The design of the flash tank and the shell-and-tube circulating condenser met the requirements for vapor condensation. The crystals in the solar salt box precipitated under solar action. X-ray diffraction was used to identify the primary compound of the crystals as NaCl, suggesting that the precipitates have potential value as industrial salts. This study offers new technical references and helpful engineering guidance for arid saline−alkaline enrichment areas facing the problem of saline farmland irrigation water.

RESUMO

Bronchogenic cyst (BC) is a rare congenital disease with pre-embryonic intestinal malformation. BC of the stomach is rare. The present study reported on the case of a 68-year-old male who presented with a spleen and stomach space mass detected incidentally upon a routine health examination. The patient underwent laparotomy. Postoperative histopathological diagnosis confirmed BC of the stomach. Postoperative recovery was smooth and the patient is currently under follow-up. A literature review suggested that BC is a rare disease and the location of the stomach is very rare. Indications of surgical intervention remain controversial for asymptomatic cases. Owing to no specific clinical or radiologic features to define the disease profile for diagnosis, surgery may be a good choice for both diagnosis and therapy if the patient's condition permits.
