RESUMO

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic intestinal inflammatory disease in humans constituting a major health concern today whose prevalence has been increasing over the world. Production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and disturbed capacity of antioxidant defense in IBD subjects have been reported. Antioxidants may play a significant role in IBD treatment. This study aimed at evaluating ameliorative effects of intraperitoneal resveratrol pretreatment on trinitrobenzene sulphonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis in rats. Thirty five Wistar-Albino female rats were divided equally into five groups. Inflammation was induced by the intrarectal administration of TNBS under anesthesia. Intraperitoneal administration of resveratrol (RSV) at a concentration of 10mg/kg/day for 5 days before the induction of colitis significantly reduced microscopy score and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and increased glutathione peroxidase (GSH Px) activity compared to TNBS and vehicle groups. Also an insignificant increase in catalase (CAT) activity was observed in the RSV treated group compared to TNBS and vehicle groups. In this paper, the most recent patent on the identification and treatment of IBD was indicated. In conclusion, antioxidant RSV proved to have a beneficial effect on TNBS colitis in rats. In light of these advantageous results, the RSV can be considered as adjuvant agent in IBD treatments.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of methyl palmitate on murine model of chronic asthma. METHODS: The experimental study was conducted in the animal laboratory of DokuzEylul University, Turkey, from October to December, 2012, and comprised BALB/c mice whowere divided into four equal groups: three experimental and one control group. All groups except the control group were sensitised and challenged with ovalbumin. Mice with experimentally-induced asthma in Group I received saline; Group II dexamethasone 1mg/kg; Group III methyl palmitate300mg/kg intraperitoneally three times per week in the last four weeks of the study period. Animals were sacrificed 24h after the last administration of study drugs. Histological findings of airways were evaluated by light microscopic examination. Blood samples from vena cava inferior were taken for measurement of interleukin-5 levels. SPSS 15 was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The 28 female mice in the study were divided into 4 groups of 7(25%) each. The age range of the animals was 6-8weeks, and the weight range was 18-20g. All histological parameters and interleukin-5 levels of asthma in the Group III were significantly ameliorated compared to the Group I (p<0.05). All histological parameters and interleukin-5 levels were similar between Group III and Group II. CONCLUSIONS: Methyl palmitate exhibited anti-inflammatory effects by resolving the histological changes and reducing the interleukin-5 levels in murine model of chronic asthma.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate serum concentrations of interleukin-6 (IL-6) in relation with hormonal and metabolic profile in patients with and without polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). METHODS: A total of 40 women with PCOS and 40 age-matched controls were eligible for the study. Hirsutism scores, hormonal and metabolic profile as well as IL-6 levels were evaluated in each subject. RESULTS: Women with PCOS exhibited higher body mass index (BMI) and serum concentrations of IL-6 levels than controls (p < 0.05); however, levels of IL-6 were not significantly increased when compared with BMI-matched controls (p > 0.05). IL-6 levels were significantly correlated positively with BMI and triglyceride levels; however, negatively correlated with high-density lipoprotein levels. CONCLUSION: The data of this study suggested that serum IL-6 levels were found to be higher in women with PCOS as compared to controls; however, IL-6 levels might be dependent on nutritional status but not on PCOS per se. Raised serum IL-6 levels may be related to BMI and serum lipid levels and may be a predictor for cardiometabolic risks.
