RESUMO

Mapped monthly data products of surface ocean acidification indicators from 1998 to 2022 on a 0.25° by 0.25° spatial grid have been developed for eleven U.S. large marine ecosystems (LMEs). The data products were constructed using observations from the Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas, co-located surface ocean properties, and two types of machine learning algorithms: Gaussian mixture models to organize LMEs into clusters of similar environmental variability and random forest regressions (RFRs) that were trained and applied within each cluster to spatiotemporally interpolate the observational data. The data products, called RFR-LMEs, have been averaged into regional timeseries to summarize the status of ocean acidification in U.S. coastal waters, showing a domain-wide carbon dioxide partial pressure increase of 1.4 ± 0.4 µatm yr-1 and pH decrease of 0.0014 ± 0.0004 yr-1. RFR-LMEs have been evaluated via comparisons to discrete shipboard data, fixed timeseries, and other mapped surface ocean carbon chemistry data products. Regionally averaged timeseries of RFR-LME indicators are provided online through the NOAA National Marine Ecosystem Status web portal.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Happiness is an important factor in life, and food literacy (FL) has been emphasized as a core concept for a happy and healthy life. This study examined the level of happiness of Seoul citizens according to their sociodemographic factors and their association with FL. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This study used the data from the Seoul Food Survey, a cross-sectional study conducted on 4,039 Seoul citizens from September to October 2021. FL was measured using a validated questionnaire consisting of 33 items from 3 sub-domains: 14 items in the nutrition and safety domain, 8 items in the cultural and relational domain, and 11 items in the socio-ecological domain. Statistical analysis involved descriptive statistics and multivariate regression analysis. RESULTS: Various sociodemographic factors, such as household income, subjective health status, and food insecurity, were found to be associated with the level of happiness. The level of FL was also associated with the happiness scores. After adjusting for variables associated with happiness, the participants with the highest quartile FL scores were 7.32 times more likely to respond that they were happy than those with the lowest FL score. Three FL domains and total FL showed linear increases in overall happiness after controlling for subjective health status and sociodemographic factors (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: After adjusting for the related covariates, higher levels of FL were associated with higher scores in happiness. Based on this study, it would be meaningful to evaluate ways to intervene in FL to improve the level of happiness among the general population.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Unhealthy food choices among young adults are common globally, and the incidence of chronic diseases, such as obesity, is rising. Food literacy (FL) is important for improving and maintaining individual health in a rapidly changing food environment and can form the basis for following a sustainable diet. Therefore, it is essential to improve FL among young adults, particularly college students, who are in the formative years of their lifelong food habits. This study examined the facilitators and barriers of FL and related dietary behavior among college students in South Korea. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This study recruited 25 college students with different residence types using convenience and snowball sampling. In-person, telephone, and video interviews were conducted from March to November 2021. The interview data were analyzed using framework analysis based on the socio-ecological model. RESULTS: At the individual level, prior good experiences with food were the most frequently mentioned facilitator. In contrast, the major barriers were a lack of knowledge, financial hardship, irregular schedules, and academic stress. At the interpersonal level, the influences of family and peers, such as early exposure to healthy eating habits and opportunities to have easy accessibility to farms and farming, are major facilitators, but the lack of a sense of community was the major barrier. At the environmental level, the major barriers were unfavorable food environments at home and in neighborhoods, such as the absence of kitchens in housing and large packaging of produce at markets. CONCLUSIONS: Many factors affected the students' FL and related healthy eating practices. These findings suggest that a campus-based FL program should be developed by reflecting on these facilitators and barriers.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Food literacy (FL) is a crucial skill for selecting sustainable and healthy food options, necessitating the identification of vulnerable groups in the community using valid measurement tools. Identifying weak domains in FL is essential for enhancing the overall FL. This study examined the FL levels of Seoul citizens based on their sociodemographic characteristics and assessed the relationship between FL, food intake, and weight status. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This study utilized the data from the Seoul Food Survey, a cross-sectional study employing representative samples of Seoul citizens. Data collection occurred from September to October 2021, with 4,039 citizens aged 18 yrs and above participating in face-to-face surveys. Thirty-three FL items were assessed, comprising 14 items in the nutrition and safety (NS) domain, eight items in the cultural and relational (CR) domain, and 11 items in the socio-ecological (SE) domain. In addition, data on food intake sufficiency and obesity status were collected. The descriptive statistics, t-tests, analysis of variance, and logistic regression analysis were used for analysis. RESULTS: Men, students, young adults, older citizens, and people experiencing food insecurity had the lowest scores for all the FL domains. The highest quartile group of NS scores had a higher probability of consuming adequate servings of vegetables and fruits, with significant linear trends observed (P for trend < 0.05). In all three FL domains, the odds ratio for obesity was significantly lower in the groups with high FL scores (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: A close relationship was observed between low FL, obesity, and food intake, even after controlling for other covariates. Vulnerable groups with low FL were also identified. Therefore, it is essential to develop programs to improve FL and the health and well-being of these groups.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has affected the entire world population in many ways. This study aimed to analyze the patterns of changes in eating, food purchasing and preparation, physical activity, and subjective health after COVID-19 outbreak by various sociodemographic factors and to understand the factors associated with changes in subjective health. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A cross-sectional survey using a representative sample from Seoul was used for the analysis. The data collection was conducted from September to October 2020. A total of 3,833 citizens aged more than 18 years old participated in the Seoul Food Survey. Descriptive statistics and generalized ordinal logistic regression models were used to understand the changes in health behaviors, health indicators, and subjective general health by various socioeconomic status. RESULTS: It was shown that the changes in household income, food expenditure, food consumption and physical activities differed significantly by age, education, occupation, income, weight, and food security status. Low-income and food-insecure households were affected more severely by the pandemic. Older age, household food insecurity, income reduction, increased home cooking and frequency of having instant foods, decreased physical activity and weight gain were significant factors explaining worse perceived health during the COVID-19 pandemic. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that focusing on older populations and low-income families with food insecurity should be prioritized during infectious disease outbreaks. In addition, the role of physical activities and instant food consumption in explaining perceived health should be investigated further in this prolonged battle with the pandemic situation.

RESUMO

Ticagrelor (TCG), an antiplatelet agent, has low solubility and permeability; thus, there are many trials to apply the pharmaceutical technology for the enhancement of TCG solubility and permeability. Herein, we have developed the TCG high-loaded nanostructured lipid carrier (HL-NLC) and solidified the HL-NLC to develop the oral tablet. The HL-NLC was successfully fabricated and optimized with a particle size of 164.5 nm, a PDI of 0.199, an encapsulation efficiency of 98.5%, and a drug loading of 16.4%. For the solidification of HL-NLC (S-HL-NLC), the adsorbent was determined based on the physical properties of the S-HL-NLC, such as bulk density, tap density, angle of repose, Hausner ratio, Carr's index, and drug content. Florite R was chosen because of its excellent adsorption capacity, excellent physical properties, and solubility of the powder after manufacturing. Using an S-HL-NLC, the S-HL-NLC tablet with HPMC 4 K was prepared, which is showed a released extent of more than 90% at 24 h. Thus, we have developed the sustained release tablet containing the TCG-loaded HL-NLC. Moreover, the formulations have exhibited no cytotoxicity against Caco-2 cells and improved the cellular uptake of TCG. In pharmacokinetic study, compared with raw TCG, the bioavailability of HL-NLC and S-HL-NLC was increased by 293% and 323%, respectively. In conclusion, we successfully developed the TCG high-loaded NLC tablet, that exhibited a sustained release profile and enhanced oral bioavailability.

RESUMO

Zaltoprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug with poor oral bioavailability. S(+)-zaltoprofen (SZPF)-loaded nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) were prepared to enhance oral bioavailability. SZPF-loaded NLCs (NLC-SZPF) were prepared using the hot-melting homogenization method and optimized using the Box-Behnken design. The characterization of optimized NLC-SZPF, in vitro release, cytotoxicity, cellular uptake, ex vivo permeability, and pharmacokinetic parameters were evaluated to confirm the advantages of NLC formulation. NLC-SZPF with a diameter of 105.5 ± 1.2 nm had a high encapsulation efficiency of 99.84 ± 0.01%. NLC-SZPF showed a sustained-release profile, high biocompatibility, and high permeability across the intestinal tract. The relative bioavailability of NLC-SZPF was 431.3% compared with that of SZPF after oral administration to experimental rats. NLC-SZPF was successfully optimized using experimental designs to enhance the oral bioavailability of SZPF. Hence, NLC-SZPF could be a promising approach to overcome the poor oral bioavailability of SZPF.

RESUMO

Although mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) are widely used as anticancer drug carriers, unmodified MSNs induce off-target effects and at high doses, there are adverse effects of hemolysis because of the interaction with the silanol group on the surface and cells. In this study, we developed doxorubicin (DOX)-loaded MSNs coated with mannose grafted poly (acrylic acid) copolymer (DOX@MSNs-man-g-PAA) to enhance the hemocompatibility and target efficacy to cancer cells. This uniform nanosized DOX@MSNs-man-g-PAA showed sustained and pH-dependent drug release with improved hemocompatibility over the bare MSNs. The uptake of the DOX@MSN-man-g-PAA in breast cancer cells was significantly improved by mannose receptor-mediated endocytosis, which showed significant increasing intracellular ROS and changes in mitochondrial membrane potential. This formulation exhibited superior tumor-suppressing activity in the MDA-MB-231 cells inoculated mice. Overall, the present study suggested the possibility of the copolymer-coated MSNs as drug carriers for cancer therapy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Food literacy (FL) is important as the ability to consider the unique aspects of food in our lives, society, and environment. The main objectives of this study were as follows: (1) to revisit the definition of FL, considering the cultural, relational, and ecological aspects that were often neglected in previous research, and (2) to develop a measurement tool for adults. METHODS: Expert workshops, the Delphi survey, the test-retest survey, and one-on-one interviews were conducted. The content validity ratio was calculated from the Delphi survey. The correlation coefficient of each item was measured twice, and the Cronbach's alpha was calculated. RESULTS: This study proposed a new definition of FL, including future-oriented values, and suggested three main domains with 33 items: (1) 14 questions in nutrition and safety FL (Cronbach's α = 0.877, average correlation coefficient = 0.70), (2) 8 questions in cultural and relational FL (Cronbach's α = 0.705, average correlation coefficient = 0.71), and (3) 11 questions in socio-ecological FL (Cronbach's α = 0.737, average correlation coefficient = 0.61). CONCLUSIONS: This newly developed questionnaire should be tested in different populations; however, this questionnaire can be a basis for measuring and improving FL for healthy, joyful, and sustainable diets for adults.

RESUMO

Microneedles (MNs), one of the transdermal drug delivery systems, have received extensive interest as an alternative to parenteral or parenteral administrations. For the successful drug delivery of coated MNs, the coated drug or chemical of MNs should be dissolved by skin's interstitial fluid and completely released from the MNs. Thus, the rapid disintegration of the drug from MNs plays a crucial role in ideal drug delivery of MNs. In this study, we developed the rapid disintegration coating formulation to reduce the application time of MN. The rapid disintegration MN was developed using polymers (PVA or HPMC), glycerol, croscarmellose sodium, tween 80, and Brij, as thickener, plasticizer, disintegrating agent, and surfactants, respectively. HPMC MN showed the burst release and rapid disintegration. Moreover, the drug from HPMC MN was successfully delivered into porcine skin within 1 min. In toxicological evaluation, the HPMC MN did not alter the liver and kidney function. Besides, HPMC MN did not induce the acute inflammation and change of skin structure after the application on rat skin. Thus, the coating formulation in this study could be one of the options for the development of safe and rapid disintegration MN.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the associations of physical activity and body mass index (BMI) with the metabolic syndrome (MetS) in police officers. METHODS: Self-reported physical activity, MetS, and a modified MetS (MMetS, excluding obesity) were assessed in 448 officers. RESULTS: Of the officers, 27.5% had MetS, 48.7% were overweight, and 31.7% were obese. Being overweight and obese increased the MetS risk by 6.8- and 10.9-fold, respectively, independent of physical activity level. Moderate and low levels of physical activity were associated with a 1.9- and 2.5-fold increased risk for MetS, but not after adjusting for BMI. However, within BMI categories, the risk for MMetS was lower as physical activity increased. CONCLUSION: In police, a higher BMI is more critical than reduced physical activity for MetS risk; however, physical activity can attenuate some of the risk associated with a higher BMI.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Accelerometers can provide accurate estimates of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). However, one of the limitations of these instruments is the inability to capture light activity within an acceptable range of error. The purpose of the present study was to determine the validity of different activity monitors for estimating energy expenditure (EE) of light intensity, semi-structured activities. METHODS: Forty healthy participants wore a SenseWear Pro3 Armband (SWA, v.6.1), the SenseWear Mini, the Actiheart, ActiGraph, and ActivPAL monitors, while being monitored with a portable indirect calorimetry (IC). Participants engaged in a variety of low intensity activities but no formalized scripts or protocols were used during these periods. RESULTS: The Mini and SWA overestimated total EE on average by 1.0% and 4.0%, respectively, while the AH, the GT3X, and the AP underestimated total EE on average by 7.8%, 25.5%, and 22.2%, respectively. The pattern-recognition monitors yielded non-significant differences in EE estimates during the semi-structured period (p = 0.66, p = 0.27, and p = 0.21 for the Mini, SWA, and AH, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The SenseWear Mini provided more accurate estimates of EE during light to moderate intensity semi-structured activities compared to other activity monitors. This monitor should be considered when there is interest in tracking low intensity activities in groups of individuals.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of sleep characteristics and mental health with the metabolic syndrome (MetS) in law enforcement officers (LEOs). METHODS: Sleep duration (≤6, >6-<8, ≥8 hours/night), sleep quality ("good," "poor"), mental health (stress, burnout, depression), and MetS components were compared in 106 LEOs. RESULTS: The prevalence of MetS was 33%. After covariate adjustment including the mental health measures, long sleep duration was associated with MetS (odds ratio = 4.89, 95% confidence interval = 1.32 to 18.13), whereas sleep quality was not. LEOs with short sleep duration or poor sleep quality reported more stress, burnout, and depression symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: In LEOs, sleep duration is more strongly associated with the occurrence of MetS than sleep quality, independent of mental health. Nevertheless, short sleep duration and poor sleep quality may affect mental health in LEOs.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To assess the levels of stress and the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in female law enforcement officers (LEOs). METHODS: Self-reported data including job-related stress and CVD risk factors were obtained from 65 female LEOs. Stress scores were compared with 429 males LEOs and CVD risk factors were compared with 1,213 demographically similar female respondents to the CDC BRFSS survey. All subjects resided in Iowa. RESULTS: Female LEOs had more stress (perceived stress, p < 0.01), more job-related stress (job strain, vital exhaustion and effort-reward imbalance, p < 0.01 for all), but similar social support (social provision scale, p = 0.412) than male LEOs. Female LEOs had a significantly higher prevalence of hypercholesterolemia than the general Iowa female population (46.2 vs. 29.3%, p < 0.01). There was a trend towards a higher prevalence of diabetes in female LEOs (9.2 vs. 4.5%, p = 0.084). The most commonly cited contributor to their perceived CVD risk was stress (77%). Female LEOs who felt that being either a LEO (67.7%) or a female LEO (41.5%) contributed to their risk for chronic diseases had more stress and a higher prevalence of overweight and obesity than female LEOs who felt differently. CONCLUSIONS: Female LEOs have higher stress than male LEOs. The prevalences of hypercholesterolemia and diabetes are higher in female LEOs than that of the general female population. Thus, female LEOs may be at a greater risk for CVD than their male counterparts.
