RESUMO

For a high capacitance and high lifetime reliability of multilayer ceramic capacitors for automotive applications, the activation energy on thermal activation process can typically be calculated by using Arrhenius based Prokopowicz-Vaskas equation as a method for lifetime prediction. In this study, it is clearly observed that the activation energy shows to be constant in the range of ~ 1.5 eV for the prototype MLCCs, higher than the activation energy values of ~ 1.0 eV related to the motion or diffusion of oxygen vacancies reported in the previous literature. The activation energy value of ~ 1.5 eV for three prototype MLCCs is close to a half the energy band gap (Eg/2 ≈ 1.6 eV) of BaTiO3 obtained from specific environment, where oxygen vacancies are stabilized by external containment such as the effect of rare earth oxide additives. Due to an obvious difference in activation energy values, it difficult to explain the conduction mechanism for failure by only oxygen vacancy migration. Therefore, the concepts of electronic processes and oxygen vacancy should be considered together to understand conduction mechanism for failure of BaTiO3-based MLCCs in thermal activation processes. It can be useful as an indicator for future MLCC development with high lifetime reliability.

RESUMO

The simple structure, low power consumption, and small form factor have made surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices essential to mobile communication as RF filters. For instance, the latest 5G smartphones are equipped with almost 100 acoustic wave filters to select a specific frequency band and increase communication capacity. On the arrival of the newest communication standard, 5G, mm-band up to 39 GHz is supposed to be utilized, whereas the conventional SAW filters are limited to below 3 GHz, leaving a critical component missing. Here, we show an emerging 2D material-hexagonal boron nitride-can become a key enabler of mm-band SAW filter. Our study, based on first principles analysis and acousto-electric simulation, shows the operating frequency of SAW devices can reach over 20 GHz in its fundamental mode and 40 GHz in its interface mode with high electromechanical coupling coefficient (K2) and low insertion loss. In addition to the orders of magnitude improvement compared to the conventional SAW devices, our study provides a systematic approach to utilizing van der Waals crystals with highly anisotropic acoustic properties for practical applications.

RESUMO

In the aquaculture industry, an efficient and safe water purification system is important to prevent mass mortality by virulent pathogens. As extensive use of traditional methods (e.g.: povidone-iodine, ozone, ultraviolet irradiation, formalin, and chlorine dioxide) have adverse effects on cultured fish, an appropriate and alternative water purification method is vital for the sustainability of the industry. Non-thermal plasma technology has been successfully used for various biomedical purposes (e.g: food sterilization, medical device disinfection, wound healing, cancer therapy, etc.) and has great potential to be used as a sterilizing system. However, few studies have been conducted on its usefulness in the aquaculture industry. In this study, we investigated the bactericidal efficacy of plasma-activated water induced by non-thermal plasma and its histopathological as well as immunological adverse effects on koi. A highly virulent Aeromonas hydrophila SNU HS7, which caused massive mortality of koi, was used for this study. Non-thermal plasma was applied for 10 min to the fish tanks with 1.2 × 109 CFU/mL SNU HS7 using PLMB-20 system to confirm the sterilization efficacy and to observe the survival and immunological reaction of koi for 14 days. As a result, gross pathological, histopathological, and immunological investigations did not reveal any significant adverse effects in fish as compared to the control groups. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study showing that non-thermal plasma can be used for sterilization of rearing water without giving significant physiological damage to the fish, even under the assumption of extreme situations. As plasma can effectively sterilize not only bacteria but also other unknown pathogens, the results of this study are showing a promising future in purifying water in aquaculture practice.

RESUMO

A new domino mode of assembly was discovered from the one-pot three-component reactions of pyrrole derivatives, active methylene compounds (malononitrile, methyl cyanoacetate, or ethyl cyanoacetate), and sodium cyanide in the presence of piperidinium acetate in EtOH at room temperature, leading to a novel tricyclic skeleton in excellent yield under mild and eco-friendly conditions. This well-choreographed domino process enabled formation of multiple bonds (three C-C and one C-O) for consecutive construction of two rings (pyrrolidine and dihydrofuran) in a diastereoselective manner.

RESUMO

A new pyrrolo[1,2-a]pyrazine chemical space with a poly-substituted pyrazine unit was readily accessed by Sc(OTf)3-catalyzed one-pot three-component coupling of a pyrrole derivative, amine, and trialkylphosphite under environment-friendly conditions. The formation of multiple bonds (two C-N and one C-P) via a domino process consisting of the chemoselective Kabachnik-Fields reaction and intramolecular cyclodehydration allowed for the construction of highly functionalized pyrazines.

RESUMO

The reaction of ß-ketonitrile and N-substituted pyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde in the presence of piperidinium acetate in CH3CN permitted regioselective access to 5-acylindolizine-7-carbonitrile through a domino Knoevenagel condensation-intramolecular aldol cyclization sequence. A wide range of new indolizine derivatives with a poly-functionalized pyridine moiety were readily synthesized in an atom-economical fashion, thereby expanding the indolizine chemical space for further applications.

RESUMO

A novel polyheterocyclic chemical space, 6H-furo[3,2-f]pyrrolo[1,2-d][1,4]diazepine, was generated by a one-pot four-component coupling reaction where multiple bonds (three C-C, one C-O, and one C-N) were formed through a domino sequence. Two heterocyclic rings (furan and diazepine) were sequentially constructed from the monocyclic pyrrole derivative under environment-friendly reaction conditions to furnish the tricyclic fused scaffold.

RESUMO

In this study, we investigated the therapeutic potential of Cinnamomum camphora leaves on allergic skin inflammation such as atopic dermatitis. We evaluated the effects of C. camphora leaves on human adult low-calcium high-temperature keratinocytes and atopic dermatitis mice. C. camphora leaves inhibited Macrophage-derived chemokine (an inflammatory chemokine) production in interferon-γ (10 ng/mL) stimulated Human adult low-calcium high-temperature keratinocytes in a dose dependent manner. C. camphora leaves suppressed the phosphorylation of janus kinase signal transducer and activator of transcription 1. C. camphora leaves also suppressed the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2, a central signaling molecule in the inflammation process. These results suggest that C. camphora leaves exhibits anti-inflammatory effect via the phosphorylation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 and extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2. To study the advanced effects of C. camphora leaves on atopic dermatitis, we induced experimental atopic dermatitis in mice by applying 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene. The group treated with C. camphora leaves (100 mg/kg) showed remarkable improvement of atopic dermatitis symptoms: reduced serum immunoglobulin E levels, smaller lymph nodes with reduced thickness and length, decreased ear edema, and reduced levels of inflammatory cell infiltration in the ears. Interestingly, the effects of C. camphora leaves on atopic dermatitis symptoms were stronger than those of hydrocort cream, a positive control. Taken together, C. camphora leaves showed alleviating effects on the inflammatory chemokine production in vitro and atopic dermatitis symptoms in vivo. These results suggest that C. camphora leaves help in the treatment of allergic inflammation such as atopic dermatitis.

RESUMO

Massive bleeding is often unavoidable during liver transplantation (LT). However, blood transfusions are associated with risks and should be avoided whenever possible. This study compares preoperative factors and outcomes between non-transfusion and transfusion groups to identify variables that could be used to predict bloodless surgery in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) patients. We conducted a retrospective study of 87 LDLT patients. The group of patients who did not require packed red blood cell (PRBC) transfusion (non-PRBC group, n = 44) was compared with those who did (PRBC group, n = 43). We compared risk factors, fluid management, and outcomes between the groups and identified variables for prediction of transfusion during LDLT.Compared with the PRBC group, the non-PRBC group had a lower model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score (8.1 ±â€Š1.1 vs 18.2 ±â€Š8.8), international normalized ratio (INR) (1.16 ±â€Š0.1 vs 1.80 ±â€Š0.94), and partial thromboplastin time (PTT) (37.1 ±â€Š6.3 vs 54.1 ±â€Š24.0), but higher hemoglobin (Hb) (13.6 ±â€Š1.6 vs 11.5 ±â€Š2.2) and hematocrit (HCT) (39.1 ±â€Š4.4 vs 32.6 ±â€Š6.0). The non-PRBC group were more likely to receive colloid and albumin but had shorter intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital length of stay. The area under the receiver operative characteristic (ROC) curve of the MELD score was the highest (91%) using a cutoff value of 10.5.Patients without PRBC transfusion during LDLT were in better condition preoperatively and had better outcomes. The MELD score is a significant predictor for PRBC transfusion.

RESUMO

Vascular injury caused by a central venous catheter (CVC) has been reported to be a rare complication, especially delayed vascular injury due to CVC has a few cases and it can be fatal because of delayed recognition and more serious complications. A 59-year-old woman with no available medical history was admitted for treatment of ovarian cancer. For the surgery, a triple-lumen CVC was placed through the left subclavian vein. Parenteral nutrition through the CVC was used for postoperative nutritional management in the first postoperative day. On the sixth postoperative day (POD), the patient suddenly complained of dyspnea. The CT revealed bilateral pleural effusion and irregular soft tissue density and air bubble in anterior mediastinum suggesting migration of the distal portion of the CVC into the anterior mediastium. In the intensive care unit (ICU) bilateral thoracentesis and percutaneous drainage were performed. She was discharged from the ICU in 3 days later and transferred to the general ward. This case emphasizes the possibility of the delayed vascular injury related to CVC and some strategies for prevention of vascular injury.

RESUMO

Lumbar chemical sympathectomy has been performed using fluoroscopic guidance for needle positioning. An 84 year old woman with atherosclerosis obliterans was referred to the pain clinic for intractable cold allodynia of her right foot. A thermogram showed decreased temperature of both feet compared with temperatures above both ankles. The patient agreed to undergo lumbar chemical sympathectomy using fluoroscopy after being informed of the associated risks of nerve injury, hemorrhage, infection, transient back pain, and transient hypotension. During the procedure and three hours afterward, no abnormal signs or symptoms were found except an increase in right leg temperature. The patient was ambulatory after the procedure. However, one day after undergoing lumbar chemical sympathectomy, she visited our emergency department for abdominal discomfort and postural dizziness. Her blood pressure was 80/50 mmHg, and flank tenderness was noted. Retroperitoneal hemorrhage from the second right lumbar segmental artery was shown on computed tomography and angiography. Vital signs were stabilized immediately after embolization into the right lumbar segmental artery.

RESUMO

Anopheles sinensis Wiedemann (63.3%) was the most abundant Anopheles mosquito captured at cowshed resting collections in malaria high-risk areas (northern Gyeonggi Province) near the demilitarized zone (DMZ) in Korea during 2005, followed by Anopheles kleini Rueda (24.7%) and Anopheles pullus M. Yamada (8.7%). At cowshed resting collections in malaria low-risk areas (Jeonnam and Gyeongnam provinces), An. sinensis accounted for 96.8% of all Anopheles spp. collected, followed by An. kleini Rueda (2.7%), whereas no An. pullus were collected. Three species, An. kleini (50.9%), An. pullus (29.0%), and An. sinensis (13.8%), accounted for nearly all of the 224 Anopheles spp. captured by New Jersey light trap near the DMZ. In addition, An. pullus and An. kleini captured by New Jersey light trap near the DMZ and assayed by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay for Plasmodium vivax circumsporozoite antigen concentrations were higher than An. sinensis sensu stricto (s.s.), indicating higher levels of sporozoites. In laboratory studies of four concurrent artificial membrane feedings on malaria-infected blood from patients, F1 progeny of An. kleini and An. pullus had higher infection rates (8.8 and 7.5%, respectively) than An. sinensis s.s. (4.2%). These data suggest that An. kleini and An. pullus and An. sinensis are vectors of malaria in Korea. Further studies are required to determine the role of these species in the transmission of P. vivax in the Republic of Korea.
