RESUMO

The development of scaffold-based nanofilms for the acceleration of wound healing and for maintaining the high level of the healthcare system is still a challenge. The use of naturally sourced polymers as binders to deliver nanoparticles to sites of injury has been highly suggested. To this end, chitosan (CS) was embedded with different nanoparticles and examined for its potential usage in wound dressing. In detail, chitosan (CS)-containing zinc sulfide (ZnS)/zirconium dioxide (ZrO2)/graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposite films were successfully fabricated with the aim of achieving promising biological behavior in the wound healing process. Morphological examination by SEM showed the formation of porous films with a good scattering of ZnS and ZrO2 nanograins, especially amongst ZnS/ZrO2/GO@CS film. In addition, ZnS/ZrO2/GO@CS displayed the lowest contact angle of 67.1 ± 0.9°. Optically, the absorption edge records 2.35 eV for pure chitosan, while it declines to 1.8:1.9 scope with the addition of ZnS, ZrO2, and GO. Normal lung cell (WI-38) proliferation inspection demonstrated that the usage of 2.4 µg/mL ZnS/ZrO2/GO@CS led to a cell viability % of 142.79%, while the usage of 5000 µg/ mL led to a viability of 113.82%. However, the fibroblast malignant cell line exposed to 2.4 µg/mL ZnS/ZrO2/GO@CS showed a viability % of 92.81%, while this percentage showed a steep decline with the usage of 5000 µg/ mL and 2500 µg/mL, reaching 23.28% and 27.81%, respectively. Further biological assessment should be executed with a three-dimensional film scaffold by choosing surrounding media characteristics (normal/malignant) that enhance the selectivity potential. The fabricated scaffolds show promising selective performance, biologically.

RESUMO

Novelmanganese(II), iron(III), cobalt(II), nickel(II), and copper(II) chelates were synthesized and studied using elemental analysis (EA), infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and conductivity, as well as magnetic measurements and thermogravimetric analysis (TG). The azo-ligand 1-[(4-nitrophenyl)diazenyl]-2-naphthol (HL) chelates to the metal ions via the nitrogen and oxygen centers of the azo group and the hydroxyl, respectively. The amounts of H2O present and its precise position were identified by thermal analysis. Density functional theory (DFT) was employed to theoretically elucidate the molecular structures of the ligand and the metal complexes. Furthermore, the quantum chemical parameters were also evaluated. The antimicrobial properties were evaluated against a group of fungal and bacterial microbes. Interestingly, the bioactivity of the complexes is enhanced compared to free ligands. Within this context, the CuL complex manifested the lowest activity, whereas the FeL complex had the greatest. Molecular docking was used to foretell the drugs' binding affinity for the structure of Escherichia coli (PDB ID: 1hnj). Protein-substrate interactions were resolved, and binding energies were accordingly calculated.

RESUMO

The development of wound dressing materials with appropriate specifications is still a challenge to overcome the current limitations of conventional medical bandages. In this regard, simple and fast methods are highly recommended, such as film casting. In addition, deliverable nanoparticles that can act to accelerate wound integration, such as samarium oxide (Sm2O3) and magnesium oxide (MgO), might represent a potential design with a novel compositional combination. In the present research, the casted film of cellulose acetate (CA) was mixed with different ratios of metal oxides, such as samarium oxide (Sm2O3) and magnesium oxide (MgO). The tests used for the film examination were X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The SEM graphs of CA films represent the surface morphology of Sm2O3@CA, MgO@CA, and Sm2O3/MgO/GO@CA. It was found that the scaffolds' surface contained a high porosity ratio with diameters of 1.5-5 µm. On the other hand, the measurement of contact angle exhibits a variable trend starting from 27° to 29° for pristine CA and Sm2O3/MgO/GO@CA. The cell viability test exhibits a noticeable increase in cell growth with a decrease in the concentration. In addition, the IC50 was determined at 6 mg/mL, while the concentration of scaffolds of 20 mg/mL caused cellular growth to be around 106%.

RESUMO

Persistent mechanical irritation of the nerve root sets up a series of events mediating sensitisation of the dorsal roots and dorsal horns in the spinal cord. Current evidence supports the role of magnesium in blocking central sensitisation through its effect on N-methyl-d-aspartate receptors. We studied the role of sequential intravenous and oral magnesium infusion in patients with chronic low back pain with a neuropathic component. We recruited a cohort of 80 patients with chronic low back pain with a Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Signs and Symptoms pain scale score ≥ 12, who were receiving a physical therapy programme. All patients were treated with anticonvulsants, antidepressants and simple analgesics; in addition 40 patients received placebo for 6 weeks (control group), while the other 40 patients received an intravenous magnesium infusion for 2 weeks followed by oral magnesium capsules for another 4 weeks (magnesium group). Patients were asked to rate their pain using a numerical rating scale. Lumbar spine range of motion was also determined using a long-arm goniometer. In the magnesium group, the patients' numerical rating scales revealed a significant reduction in pain intensity. The mean (SD) pre-treatment value was 7.5 (2.2) compared with 4.7 (1.8) at 6 months (p = 0.034). The reduction in pain intensity was accompanied by significant improvement in lumbar spine range of motion during the follow-up period. The mean (SD) values of flexion, extension and lateral flexion movements before treatment and at 6-month follow up were 22.2 (8.4) vs 34.7 (11.5) (p = 0.018), 11.8 (3.4) vs 16.9 (3.5) (p = 0.039), 11.4 (3.6) vs 17.2 (4.4) (p = 0.035), respectively. Our findings show that a 2-week intravenous magnesium infusion followed by 4 weeks of oral magnesium supplementation can reduce pain intensity and improve lumbar spine mobility during a 6-month period in patients with refractory chronic low back pain with a neuropathic component.

RESUMO

The present work is a part of a project dedicated to measure the marine radioactivity near the Saudi Arabian coasts of the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf for establishing a marine radioactivity database, which includes necessary information on the background levels of both naturally occurring and man-made radionuclides in the marine environment. Farasan Islands is a group of 84 islands (archipelago), under the administration of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in the Red Sea with its main island of Farasan, which is 50 km off the coast of Jazan City. The levels of natural radioactivity of (238)U, (235)U, (226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K and man-made radionuclides such as (137)Cs in the grab sediment and water samples around Farasan Island have been measured using gamma-ray spectroscopy. The average activity concentrations of (238)U, (235)U, (226)Ra, (232)Th, (40)K and (137)Cs in the sediment samples were found to be 35.46, 1.75, 3.31, 0.92, 34.34 and 0.14 Bq kg(-1), respectively.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Combined spinal-epidural anaesthesia is commonly used for elective caesarean section. Intrathecal injection produces rapid onset with minimal doses of local anaesthetic and epidural administration can be used to prolong the block. Our study examined the effects of adding magnesium sulphate to epidural bupivacaine and fentanyl in patients undergoing elective caesarean section using combined spinal-epidural anaesthesia. METHODS: Women ASA physical status I or II at term were recruited. All received 2 mL intrathecal 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaine, 10 mL epidural 0.25% plain bupivacaine with fentanyl 100 µg, and were randomly allocated to receive either 10 mL of epidural 0.9% sodium chloride or 10 mL epidural 5% magnesium sulphate. The quality of surgical anaesthesia, incidence of hypotension, Apgar scores, intraoperative pain assessment, onset of postoperative pain, sedation scores and side effects were recorded in the postoperative period. RESULTS: Ninety women were recruited. There was no difference in the time taken for the block to reach T4 sensory level, time to reach the highest level of sensory block, time interval between first neuraxial injection and onset of surgery between the groups. Women who received magnesium had greater motor block and muscle relaxation (P<0.05). Apgar scores were 7 or more in almost all neonates in both groups. There was no significant difference in the incidence of hypotension, nausea and vomiting and duration of motor blockade between the groups. Women who received magnesium showed less shivering and later onset of post operative pain (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The addition of magnesium to epidural bupivacaine and fentanyl in women undergoing elective caesarean section with combined spinal-epidural anaesthesia improved intraoperative conditions and the quality of postoperative analgesia.

RESUMO

This study is designed to evaluate the efficacy of treatment of bladder neck obstruction using objective (urodynamic) and subjective (assessment of satisfaction) parameters and to investigate sexual function. The results of transurethral 4 and 8 o'clock incisions of the bladder neck in 62 men (mean age 48.5 years) were reviewed with a mean follow-up of 6-12 months. Preoperative urodynamic evaluation was compared to recent postoperative urodynamic evaluation. There is marked symptomatic improvement after transurethral incision of the bladder outlet. The mean peak urine flow rate increased from 7.2 ml/s to 16.8 ml/s. Fifty-three men (85.4%) reported long-term improvement after transurethral incision of the bladder neck with an overall satisfaction rate of 71% (range 0 to 100). Five men (8%) reported new retrograde ejaculation after transurethral incision of the bladder neck. These results demonstrate that in well selected, properly diagnosed cases 4 and 8 o'clock transurethral incision of the bladder neck is an effective procedure for long-term relief of bladder outlet obstruction.

RESUMO

Seminal volume, motility and sperm cell concentrations and seminal plasma levels of fructose, lactate, pyruvate, citrate and non-esterified fatty acids were determined in the semen of male rabbits treated with a daily dose of 1 mg stilbestrol for 15 successive days, and were assessed in their relation to the reproductive state. The results revealed reduction in the seminal volume, motility and sperm cell concentration in the treated animals as compared with the findings in untreated rabbits. The fructose level increased while the lactate level followed by pyruvate, citrate and non-esterified fatty acids levels decreased after stilbestrol injection. Thus, frequent administration of stilbestrol results in changes in both physical and biochemical constituents of semen. The physical characters and chemical constituents measured were discussed on the basis of their vital importance in the reproductive processes.

RESUMO

Progesterone, enzymes, minerals, trace elements, and total protein were determined in the blood serum of nine non-pregnant, early, mid-, and late pregnant as well as puerperal camels, and were assessed in their relation to the reproductive state. The progesterone level followed by the copper level reaches peak values at mid-pregnancy. The zinc level decreases with increasing pregnancy, alkaline phosphatase increases. Hypocalcaemia and hypomagnesaemia occur towards the end of pregnancy; the total protein content increases. Surprisingly, the manganese level remained more or less constant.

RESUMO

A single carboxyhaemoglobin (COHb) estimation of late evening blood sample among non-smokers, cigarette smokers, and sheesha smokers was evaluated among Saudis. The COHb level in smokers of 15 to 40 cigarettes a day ranged between 0.7 and 10.3 with a mean value of 6.1 +/- 2.58 COHb. Values among sheesha smokers ranged between 6.5 and 13.9 with a mean value of 8.8 +/- 1.83, significantly higher than those of cigarette smokers (P less than 0.001) for a given degree of exposure to tobacco smoke.

RESUMO

Addition of different concentrations of sodium arsenite to the fermentation medium used for the production of mitomycin antibiotics by Streptomyces caespitosus hindered the biosynthesis of mitomycins and led to the accumulation of 2-oxoglutarate, pyruvate and acetone. Mitomycin C isolated and purified using thin-layer chromatography in low concentration of about 0.1 mug/ml did not affect the RNA, DNA and protein biosynthesis of the growing Bacillus subtilis, while at 10 mug/ml mitomycin C markedly affected RNA, DNA and protein biosynthesis.
