OBJECTIVE: Socioemotional changes, rather than cognitive impairments, are the feature that defines behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). Investigators have attributed the socioemotional changes in bvFTD and other dementias to frontal lobe dysfunction; however, recent work implies a further contribution from right anterior temporal disease. The authors evaluated relationships between regional brain atrophy and socioemotional changes in both bvFTD and early-onset Alzheimer's disease (EOAD). METHODS: This study explored the neuroanatomical correlations of performance on the Socioemotional Dysfunction Scale (SDS), an instrument previously shown to document socioemotional changes in bvFTD, among 13 patients with bvFTD not preselected for anterior temporal involvement and 16 age-matched patients with early-onset Alzheimer's disease (EOAD). SDS scores were correlated with volumes of regions of interest assessed with tensor-based morphometric analysis of MRI images. RESULTS: As expected, the bvFTD group had significantly higher SDS scores overall and smaller frontal regions compared with the EOAD group, which in turn had smaller volumes in temporoparietal regions. SDS scores significantly correlated with lateral anterior temporal lobe (ATL) atrophy, and a regression analysis that controlled for diagnosis indicated that SDS scores predicted lateral ATL volume. Within the bvFTD group, higher SDS scores were associated with smaller lateral and right ATL regions, as well as a smaller orbitofrontal cortex. Within the EOAD group, higher SDS scores were associated with a smaller right parietal cortex. CONCLUSIONS: This study confirms that, in addition to orbitofrontal disease, there is a prominent right and lateral ATL origin of socioemotional changes in bvFTD and further suggests that right parietal involvement contributes to socioemotional changes in EOAD.

Nanofibers and mat-like polyacrylonitrile-polyphenyl/titanium oxide (PAN-Pph./TiO2) with proper electrochemical properties were fabricated via a single-step electrospinning technique for supercapacitor application. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), thermogravimetry (TGA), fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) were conducted to characterize the morphological and chemical composition of all fabricated nanofibers. Furthermore, the electrochemical activity of the fabricated nanofibers for energy storage applications (supercapacitor) was probed by cyclic voltammetry (CV), charge-discharge (CD), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The PAN-PPh./TiO2 nanofiber electrode revealed a proper specific capacitance of 484 F g-1 at a current density of 11.0 A g-1 compared with PAN (198 F g-1), and PAN-PPh. (352 F g-1) nanofibers using the charge-discharge technique. Furthermore, the PAN-PPh./TiO2 nanofiber electrode displayed a proper energy density of 16.8 Wh kg-1 at a power density (P) of 2749.1 Wkg-1. Moreover, the PAN-PPh./TiO2 nanofiber electrode has a low electrical resistance of 23.72 Ω, and outstanding cycling stability of 79.38% capacitance retention after 3000 cycles.

A novel hybrid ternary metallic electrocatalyst of amorphous Mo/Co oxides and crystallized Cu metal was deposited over Ni foam using a one-pot, simple, and scalable solvothermal technique. The chemical structure of the prepared ternary electrocatalyst was systematically characterized and confirmed via XRD, FTIR, EDS, and XPS analysis techniques. FESEM images of (Mo/Co)Ox-Cu@NF display the formation of 3D hierarchical structure with a particle size range of 3-5 µm. The developed (Mo/Co)Ox-Cu@NF ternary electrocatalyst exhibits the maximum activity with 188 mV and 410 mV overpotentials at 50 mA cm-2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results for the (Mo/Co)Ox-Cu@NF sample demonstrate the minimum charge transfer resistance (Rct) and maximum constant phase element (CPE) values. A two-electrode cell based on the ternary electrocatalyst just needs a voltage of about 1.86 V at 50 mA cm-2 for overall water splitting (OWS). The electrocatalyst shows satisfactory durability during the OWS for 24 h at 10 mA cm-2 with an increase of only 33 mV in the cell potential.

This study evaluated effects of feeding low-bush wild blueberry (LBP) and organic American cranberry (CRP) pomaces without or with multienzyme supplement (ENZ) on growth performance, organ weight and plasma metabolites in broiler chickens. Nonenzyme-fed (no-ENZ: n = 1,575) and enzyme-fed (ENZ: n = 1,575) day-old male Cobb500 broilers were placed in floor pens (45 chicks/pen) and allocated to five corn-soybean meal-based diets: a basal diet supplemented with either bacitracin methylene disalicylate (BMD, 55 mg/kg), 0.5 or 1% of CRP or LBP in a 2 × 5 factorial design for 35-day experiment. Body weight (BW), feed intake (FI) and mortality were recorded whereas BW gain (BWG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were calculated. Birds were sampled at days 21 and 35 for organ weights and plasma metabolites. There were no interactions between diet and ENZ on any parameter (P > 0.05) and no effect of ENZ on overall (d 0-35) growth performance and organ weights (P > 0.05). Birds fed BMD were heavier (P < 0.05) at d 35 and had better overall FCR than berry-supplemented birds. Birds fed 1% LBP had poor FCR than birds fed 0.5% CRP. Birds fed LBP exhibited heavier liver (P < 0.05) than birds fed BMD or 1% CRP. The highest plasma concentrations of aspartate transaminase (AST), creatine kinase (CK) at d 28 and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) at d 35 were found in ENZ-fed birds (P < 0.05). At d 28, birds fed 0.5% LBP showed higher plasma AST and CK concentrations (P < 0.05). However, CRP feeding resulted in a lower plasma CK level compared with BMD feeding (P < 0.05). The lowest cholesterol level was detected in 1% CRP-fed birds. In conclusion, this study showed no ENZ effects to potentiate berry pomaces on the overall growth performance of broilers (P < 0.05. However, plasma profiles revealed the potential of ENZ to modulate the metabolism of pomace-fed broilers. LBP increased BW during the starter phase, while CRP increased BW during the grower phase.

BACKGROUND: Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a progressive neurologic syndrome that presents with complex visual deficits. Although PCA is most commonly a form of Alzheimer disease (AD), its early diagnosis is usually delayed due to a lack of understanding for how best to clinically screen for the syndrome. OBJECTIVE: To identify neurobehavioral screening tasks for PCA-beyond simple visual constructions-that can be administered in clinic or at bedside. METHOD: We compared the performance of 12 individuals who met neuroimaging-supported consensus criteria for PCA with that of 12 matched individuals with typical AD (tAD) and 24 healthy controls (HC) on clinic/bedside tasks measuring (a) complex figure copying, (b) Balint syndrome, (c) visual object agnosia, (d) color identification, (e) figure-ground discrimination, (f) global-local processing, (g) dressing apraxia, (h) ideomotor apraxia, and (i) Gerstmann syndrome. RESULTS: All of the individuals with PCA were impaired on the figure-ground discrimination task compared with half of the tAD group and no HC. Approximately half of the PCA group had Balint syndrome, dressing apraxia, and ideomotor apraxia compared with none in the tAD group. Difficulty copying a complex figure, global-local processing impairment, and Gerstmann syndrome did not distinguish between the two dementia groups. CONCLUSION: The figure-ground discrimination task can be used successfully as an overall screening measure for PCA, followed by specific tasks for Balint syndrome and dressing and limb apraxia. Findings reinforce PCA as a predominant occipitoparietal disorder with dorsal visual stream involvement and parietal signs with spatiomotor impairments.

BACKGROUND: Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a neurocognitive disorder characterized by difficulty localizing in space. Recognizing PCA is important because it is usually missed early in its course and may result from a number of neurological disorders other than Alzheimer's disease (AD). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to clarify whether impaired visual search tasks of spatial localization distinguished patients with PCA from those with other more typical dementias as well as from healthy control (HC) subjects. METHODS: Twelve patients meeting neuroimaging-supported Consensus Criteria for PCA, 12 comparably advanced patients with amnestic-predominant typical AD (tAD), and 24 HC participants were compared on tests of untimed and timed visual search, spatial neglect, mental rotation, environmental orientation, visuospatial construction, and face recognition. RESULTS: Only abnormalities in untimed and timed visual search and environmental orientation distinguished the PCA patients from both the tAD group and the HC group without also distinguishing the tAD patients from HC's. The PCA patients also had a tendency to greater difficulty scanning left hemispace compared to HC's. Visuospatial constructions, although worse in PCA, and face recognition were impaired in both dementia groups. CONCLUSIONS: These findings support the concept of PCA as a disorder of spatial processing and localization, indicating that visual search tasks are particularly sensitive and specific for detecting PCA and distinguishing it from more typical dementia syndromes.

INTRODUCTION: Altered glutathione systems (GSH) are suggested to participate in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. The purpose of this study was to determine the plasmatic glutathione levels of patients with schizophrenia compared to healthy controls and to examine their relationships with clinical and therapeutic features. METHODS: It was a case-control study carried out on 100 patients with schizophrenia according to DSM-IV-TR criteria and 95 healthy controls. All patients were assessed by Clinical Global Impressions-severity (CGI-severity) and Global Assessment of Functioning (EGF). Most of the patients (55%) were under first-generation antipsychotics. Plasmatic glutathione levels (total glutathione GSHt, reduced glutathione GSHr, oxidized glutathione GSSG) were determined by spectrophotometry. RESULTS: The levels of GSHt and GSHr were significantly decreased in schizophrenic patients in comparison with the healthy controls. These reductions were noted to be more pronounced in the untreated patients. No correlation was observed between the GSH levels and the clinical subtypes of schizophrenia and EGF scores. Depending on the therapeutic status, there were no significant differences in the GSH levels. In addition, there was no correlation between the GSH levels and the daily dosage of the antipsychotic treatment. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that the observed changes are related to the physiopathology of schizophrenia rather than to the presence of neuroleptic treatment. These results provide support for further studies of the possible role of antioxidants as neuroprotective therapeutic strategies.

This study was carried out to evaluate the potential effects of 90 days-long dietary supple- mentation of probiotic and yeast culture on immunity condition of lambs. Fifteen Rahmani growing male lambs (about 5 months old and 23.21±2.75 kg body weight) were randomly allo- cated to three equal groups consisting of 5 animals each. The animals in the first group, served as a control (group C), were fed a basal diet without any supplementation. The lambs in the second and third group were fed the basal diet supplemented with probiotic (group Y) or yeast culture (group YC), respectively. The probiotic consisted of live yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisae) alone, while the yeast culture was composed of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and the media on which it was grown. In group Y and YC, each lamb was supplemented daily with 0.5 g and 7.0 g of live yeast and yeast culture, respectively. Blood samples were collected before feeding the supplements and then every 15 days until the day 90th. Total and differential leucocytic counts, total protein, albumin, IgA, IgG and IgM levels were measured in blood. There were insignificant (p>0.05) variations in the levels of total and differential leucocytic counts and total protein among the groups throughout the experiment. However, significant differences (p⟨0.05) were found in globulin, IgA, IgG and IgM in both (Y) and (YC) groups, but the effect of yeast culture seems to be better than that of the probiotic. In conclusions, the obtained results indicate that the tested probiotic and yeast culture improve the immunological status of lambs.

OBJECTIVE: Spinal cord injury (SCI) can alter to varying degrees patients' sexuality. The goals of this study were to evaluate sexual dysfunctions (SD) among a sample of Tunisian patients with SCI and to determine the associated factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on a sample of 30 patients with SCI. Sexuality was evaluated by : Male Sexual Quotient (MSQ) and Sexual Health Inventory for Men (SHIM). Other parameters were collected : sociodemographic, clinical, functional capacity, psychological profile and quality of life (QoL) (Short-Form 36 SF36). RESULTS: The mean age was 41±9.6 years (23-56). The frequency of SD in this study was 69.2 %. The most affected items in the MSQ (76 %) were erection, orgasm, seduction and performance. The SD were associated with alteration of SF36 domains. We noted positive correlations on the one hand between the MSQ score and the role physical (RP) and general health (GH) sub scores of SF36 and on the other hand between the SHIM and the sub scores RP, mental and physical component score (MCS and PCS). The MSQ score was negatively correlated with the HAD score. No other associations were noted. CONCLUSION: Our study showed a high frequency of SD in SCI patients including Tunisians. SD were mainly associated with impaired QOL and the anxio-depressive profile. The absence of other associations could be explained mainly by the peculiarity of our culture which still considers sexuality and SD as a taboo and secondary subject.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of supplying two levels of Acacia nilotica (A. nilotica) pods to rations of sheep on nutrient digestibility, nitrogen balance and rumen liquor parameters (pH, total protozoa count, protein concentration and enzymes activity). Twelve mature rams (50 ± 1.25 kg B.W.) were distributed into three groups, each with four rams. Animals in group one were considered as a control which fed a basal diet, consisting of concentrate mixture and Egyptian clover. The second group and the third one received the same basal diet with supplying the concentrate mixture by 1.5% and 3.0% of A. nilotica pods meal respectively. The experiment lasted for 3 weeks. It was found that supplementation of A. nilotica pods to the concentrate mixture at a rate of 1.5% and 3.0% significantly improved the total feed intake compared to the control. The digestibility of dry matter and crude fibre was significantly reduced with A. nilotica supplements, whereas the digestibility of crude protein was significantly improved. All of nitrogen intake and N-retained were significantly increased in rams fed on concentrates with 1.5% and 3.0% A.  nilotica pods when compared to the control. The pH of ruminal fluid was not affected by the dietary treatments. Nevertheless, the total rumen protozoa count was significantly decreased in A. nilotica pods supplemented groups. Also, the rumen protein concentration and the ruminal enzymes activity, especially α-amylase, cellulase and protease, were lower in A. nilotica pods supplemented treatments. In conclusions, inclusion of low levels of A. nilotica pods (1.5% and 3.0%) in the concentrates can be used as a natural protein protectant in ruminants by forming tannin protein complexes in the rumen to maximize the amino acids available in the lower digestive tract. Also, these levels can increase the protein digestibility as well as the N-retained in the body .

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of including potato peels (PP) and sugar beet pulp (SBP), as unconventional feeds, with and without enzyme in broiler diets from 1 to 42 days of age by observing the growth performance, blood parameters and carcass characteristics. A total of 150, 1-day old, chicks were randomly assigned into five groups, each with 30 chicks. Birds in group 1 were fed on the control diet. Chicks in groups 2 and 3 were offered diets containing PP and SBP at the rate of 15% and 7.5%, respectively, while those in groups 4 and 5 were fed the same diets but with adding an enzyme mixture. Using the unconventional feeds in the diets was found to decrease the body weight (BW). However, the feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion did not differ from the control in PP at the grower period, but decreased in SBP throughout the experiment. Addition of enzyme greatly improved the BW in PP and SBP to a degree that it surpasses the control and also increased the feed intake and conversion. The total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol serum levels were decreased in all tested groups. Carcass yield was not affected by treatments, but the carcass fat content was reduced using the unconventional feeds with or without enzyme. In conclusion, PP can be used at a rate of 15% in the grower diets of broilers. Furthermore, 15% PP or 7.5% SBP can be included in starter and grower diets, but with the addition of enzymes. This can help in solving the problem of current shortage and rising costs of conventional feeds.

Small ruminants represent an important economic source in small farm systems and agriculture. Feed is the main component of livestock farming, which has gained special attention to improve animal performance. Many studies have been done to improve feed utilisation through addition of feed additives. For a long period, antibiotics have been widely used as growth promoters in livestock diets. Due to their ban in many countries, search for alternative feed additives has been intensified. Probiotics are one of these alternatives recognised to be safe to the animals. Use of probiotics in small ruminant nutrition has been confirmed to improve animal health, productivity and immunity. Probiotics improved growth performance through enhancing of rumen microbial ecosystem, nutrient digestibility and feed conversion rate. Moreover, probiotics have been reported to stabilise rumen pH, increase volatile fatty acids production and to stimulate lactic acid utilising protozoa, resulting in a highly efficient rumen function. Furthermore, use of probiotics has been found to increase milk production and can reduce incidence of neonatal diarrhea and mortality. However, actual mechanisms through which probiotics exert these functions are not known. Since research on application of probiotics in small ruminants is scarce, the present review attempts to discuss the potential roles of this class of feed additives on productive performance and health status of these animals.

Data are limited regarding the prevalence of menstrual cycles and pregnancies after high-dose chemotherapy (HDC) and auto-stem cell transplantation (SCT). Female patients who underwent HDC auto-SCT for non-Hodgkin and Hodgkin lymphoma (1997-2012) were reviewed. The selection criteria were as follows: (1) alive without disease 12 and 24 months after auto-SCT for menstrual cycles and pregnancy, respectively, (2) age <40 years at auto-SCT, and (3) no primary infertility. One-hundred and seventy-six females underwent single auto-SCT. Eighty-nine were eligible for menstrual cycles and pregnancy analysis. Median age at auto-SCT was 25 years (14-40 years), at pregnancy 27 years (20-37 years), median follow-up 65 months (range 24-190). Regular menstrual-cycles resumed in 56/89 patients (63%). Increasing age (P=0.02) and number of prior chemotherapy cycles (P=0.02) are associated with higher risk of amenorrhea. Forty patients tried to get pregnant, 26 (65%) became pregnant 50 times: 43 (86%) live birth, 7 (14%) miscarriage and 2/50 had birth defects. Twenty-four patients practiced breastfeeding (median duration 4 months (1-24 months)). Enough breast milk production was reported 62.5% vs 100% in those patients who did or did not receive above the diaphragm radiation therapy, respectively, (P=0.066). Our data highlights significantly higher than perceived incidence of menstrual cycle resumption, successful pregnancies and breastfeeding after HDC auto-SCT.

Beta-thalassemia is the most frequent hereditary blood disorder in Tunisia because of its geographic localization and history. This pathology is characterized by a complex multisystem process with genetic and biochemical interactions. The aim of this work was to establish phenotype/genotype association through studying the distribution and the relationship between ß-thalassemia and α-thalassemia mutations and three polymorphic markers: the C → T polymorphism at -158 of the Gγ gene, the RFLP haplotype and the repeated sequence (AT)xTy in the ß globin silencer, in two groups of ß-thalassemia major and ß-thalassemia intermedia (TI) patients. Statistical analysis has shown that moderate expression seen in TI patients was significantly associated to ß(+) -87 (C → G), -30 (T → A) and IVSI-6 (T → C) mutations, haplotypes VIII, IX and Nb and to XmnI polymorphism. The regression analysis of combined genotypes (mutation/XmnI/RFLP haplotype) revealed that they contribute to justify 17.1 % of clinical expression diversity (p < 0.05). Among the studied genotypes the XmnI polymorphism seems to be the most determinant modulating factor, followed by the ß-thalassemia mutation and RFLP haplotype. Our findings highlight the heterogeneity of molecular background of ß-thalassemia that would be responsible of clinical variability.

This study reports a facile method for the fabrication of aligned Poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) fibers and tubes based on electrospinning and oxidative chemical polymerization. Discrete PEDOT nano- and microfibers and nano- and microtubes are difficult to fabricate quickly and reproducibly. We employed poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) polymers that were loaded with polymerizable 3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene (EDOT) monomer to create aligned nanofiber assemblies using a rotating glass mandrel during electrospinning. The EDOT monomer/PLGA polymer blends were then polymerized by exposure to an oxidative catalyst (FeCl3). PEDOT was polymerized by continuously dripping a FeCl3 solution onto the glass rod during electrospinning. The resulting PEDOT fibers were conductive, aligned and discrete. Fiber bundles could be easily produced in lengths of several centimeters. The PEDOT sheath/PLGA core fibers were immersed in chloroform to remove the PLGA and any residual EDOT resulting in hollow PEDOT tubes. This approach made it possible to easily generate large areas of aligned PEDOT fibers/tubes. The structure and properties of the aligned assemblies were measured using optical microscopy, electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, and DC conductivity measurements. We also demonstrated that the aligned PEDOT sheath/PLGA core fiber assemblies could be used in supporting and directing the extension of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons in vitro.

RESUMO

In this article, we report the case of a 61-year-old man who presented a cardiac arrest which has been resuscitated successfully. An early repolarization syndrome has been diagnosed by the ECG recorded the first 3 days after admission. This abnormality disappeared after that. The patient received an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator. Practical messages to the clinician concerning early repolarization are provided in this article.

RESUMO

Electrospinning is an exciting technique attracting more and more attention as a potential solution to the current challenges in the field of tissue engineering. This technique can be used to produce fibrous scaffolds with excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, as well as suitable micro-/nanostructure to induce desired cellular activities and to guide tissue regeneration. In order to develop electrospun fibrous scaffolds for these applications, different biocompatible materials including natural polymers, synthetic polymers and inorganic substances and preparations have been used to fabricate electrospun fibers with different structures and morphologies. This review briefly describes the development of the technique, focusing on several typically electrospun materials, surface modification of electrospun fibers, and current applications in tissue engineering.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Data concerning the influence of insulin resistance (IR) and ethnicity on early phases of viral kinetics after initiation of peginterferon plus ribavirin in treatment-naive, chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients are limited. METHODS: A total of 263 nondiabetic CHC patients treated with peginterferon plus ribavirin were enrolled for analysis from an Egyptian and Spanish center. IR was evaluated by homeostasis model assessment (HOMA)-IR. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA levels were measured at baseline, 48 hours, 2, 4, and 12 weeks after treatment initiation. Sustained virological response (SVR) was examined 24 weeks after therapy discontinuation. RESULTS: Baseline HOMA-IR strongly influenced 48 hours viral dynamics. HCV-RNA decay observed at 48 hours after the first injection of peginterferon was significantly lower (0.91±0.51 log) in patients with HOMA ≥2 compared with those with HOMA <2 (1.8±0.95 log, P=0.005) this effect was independent of stage of liver fibrosis, HCV genotype, and ethnicity. These differences remained with several cutoffs such as HOMA >3 or HOMA >4. Multivariate analysis identified baseline insulin levels as the main independent variable affecting the 48-hour response in addition to baseline HCV-RNA. The difference in early viral kinetics between patients with HOMA ≥2 or <2 is associated with a significant difference in the percentage of patients achieving both rapid virological response and SVR. CONCLUSIONS: IR is a major determinant of the early viral kinetic response to peginterferon plus ribavirin, which has a great impact on subsequent rapid virological response and SVR in CHC patients. This suggests that strategies to improve IR may have a positive effect on SVR and may be early monitored.

The purpose of this paper is to present an ergonomic evaluation of a situation of co-exposure to solvents and noise in a flexible packaging printer. We discuss how such an approach carried out in the field of printing industry work has made it possible to highlight serious shortcomings in the effectiveness of the prevention actions that are supposed to protect workers from chemicals risks and noise. The ergonomic analysis identified a strain working conditions. Indeed, some jobs expose to noise and toxic risk. Lamination operations, winding and cutting are purveyors of noise. Some physical and spatial factors contribute to amplify the toxic risk. The not wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE) by the operators maybe explained by the fact that it doesn't any possibility to do "otherwise". Indeed, operators adopt a compromise to achieve the objectives of production to the detriment of their health and safety. These constraints are causing gene and psychosocial factors. The interviews revealed a state of psychosis in the workshop, which was accentuated by the reclassification of an operator which has created a climate of panic and anxiety especially for older operators who have more than 20 years exposed to handling of toxic and more exposure to high noise level.
