RESUMO

Due to the global warming crisis, the spread of various infectious diseases is worsening, with mosquito-borne contagious diseases posing a significant threat. While many residential and public spaces contain plants, often for greening the environment and improving mental and physical well-being, the carbon dioxide released by these plants produces ideal habitats for mosquitoes. Considering the quality of life of urban residents and the development of health-related products simultaneously is an important topic. This study used diverse complementary techniques, such as energy-storing rare-earth luminescent materials, sustainable power generation using plant energy, blue light-emitting diodes, and environmentally friendly fermentation formula, to develop planting products with potential mosquito control functionality. The prototype design for this mosquito-trapping potted plant has been patented. The aim of this paper is to discuss the design principles adopted to improve the defects of existing mosquito-trapping designs, the green energy materials and techniques employed, the architecture configuration of the product prototype, and the test results. By integrating green materials and technology, the prototype can be self-powered without being plugged in to yield conspicuous energy savings. The results showed that the developed multi-function products, combined with the concept of energy sustainability, can improve global public health as well as individuals' physical and mental health.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Arsenic is a well-documented human carcinogen, and studies on urinary and skin cancers have shown that the carcinogenicity of ingested arsenic has cell-type specificity. To evaluate whether this is also true for lung cancers, we conducted a study on 243 townships in Taiwan. METHODS: The arsenic levels were assessed using measurement reports from a previous survey, and the incidence of lung cancer was assessed using the data gathered by the National Cancer Registry Program. We analyzed data by regression models with multiple variables to describe exposure levels; each variable denoted the proportion of people in a specific exposure category in each township. An urbanization index and variables denoting the distribution of age in each township were also included in the model to adjust for effects of urbanization and age. RESULTS: Among the three major cell types of lung cancer, squamous cell carcinoma appeared to be associated with arsenic level in drinking water, and the association was more prominent at exposure level above 0.64 mg/L in both men and women. A 1% increase in the proportion of wells in this category was associated with an increase of 0.27 per 100,000 per year in the incidence of squamous cell lung cancer in men and 0.13 per 100,000 per year in women. Adenocarcinoma and small cell carcinoma were not associated with arsenic level in drinking water. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggested that the carcinogenicity of arsenic on lungs is cell-type specific, which is compatible with observations on urinary and skin cancers. Whereas data in the literature were limited, the association between adenocarcinoma and arsenic exposures through inhalation appeared to be stronger than that of squamous cell carcinoma. Therefore, different exposure routes may give rise to different mechanisms in the carcinogenicity of arsenic.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Recent advances in sequencing technology have opened a new era in RNA studies. Novel types of RNAs such as long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been discovered by transcriptomic sequencing and some lncRNAs have been found to play essential roles in biological processes. However, only limited information is available for lncRNAs in Drosophila melanogaster, an important model organism. Therefore, the characterization of lncRNAs and identification of new lncRNAs in D. melanogaster is an important area of research. Moreover, there is an increasing interest in the use of ChIP-seq data (H3K4me3, H3K36me3 and Pol II) to detect signatures of active transcription for reported lncRNAs. RESULTS: We have developed a computational approach to identify new lncRNAs from two tissue-specific RNA-seq datasets using the poly(A)-enriched and the ribo-zero method, respectively. In our results, we identified 462 novel lncRNA transcripts, which we combined with 4137 previously published lncRNA transcripts into a curated dataset. We then utilized 61 RNA-seq and 32 ChIP-seq datasets to improve the annotation of the curated lncRNAs with regards to transcriptional direction, exon regions, classification, expression in the brain, possession of a poly(A) tail, and presence of conventional chromatin signatures. Furthermore, we used 30 time-course RNA-seq datasets and 32 ChIP-seq datasets to investigate whether the lncRNAs reported by RNA-seq have active transcription signatures. The results showed that more than half of the reported lncRNAs did not have chromatin signatures related to active transcription. To clarify this issue, we conducted RT-qPCR experiments and found that ~95.24% of the selected lncRNAs were truly transcribed, regardless of whether they were associated with active chromatin signatures or not. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we discovered a large number of novel lncRNAs, which suggests that many remain to be identified in D. melanogaster. For the lncRNAs that are known, we improved their characterization by integrating a large number of sequencing datasets (93 sets in total) from multiple sources (lncRNAs, RNA-seq and ChIP-seq). The RT-qPCR experiments demonstrated that RNA-seq is a reliable platform to discover lncRNAs. This set of curated lncRNAs with improved annotations can serve as an important resource for investigating the function of lncRNAs in D. melanogaster.

RESUMO

On the basis of an infrared femtosecond Cr:forsterite laser, we developed a semiquantitative method to analyze the microscopic distribution of bilirubins. Using 1230 nm femtosecond pulses, we selectively excited the two-photon red fluorescence of bilirubin dimers around 660 nm. Autofluorescences from other endogenous fluorophores were greatly suppressed. Using this distinct fluorescence measure, we found that poorly differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissues on average showed 3.7 times lower concentration of bilirubins than the corresponding nontumor parts. The corresponding fluorescence lifetime measurements indicated that HCC tissues exhibited a longer lifetime (500 ps) than that of nontumor parts (300 ps). Similarly, oral cancer cell lines had longer lifetimes (>330 ps) than those of nontumor ones (250 ps). We anticipate the developed methods of bilirubin molecular imaging to be useful in diagnosing cancers or studying the dynamics of bilirubin metabolisms in live cells.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the efficacy of a cochlear implant (CI) processing method that enhances temporal periodicity cues of speech. DESIGN: Subjects participated in word and tone identification tasks. Two processing conditions - the conventional advanced combination encoder (ACE) and tone-enhanced ACE were tested. Test materials were Cantonese disyllabic words recorded from one male and one female speaker. Speech-shaped noise was added to clean speech. The fundamental frequency information for periodicity enhancement was extracted from the clean speech. Electrical stimuli generated from the noisy speech with and without periodicity enhancement were presented via direct stimulation using a Laura 34 research processor. Subjects were asked to identify the presented word. STUDY SAMPLE: Seven post-lingually deafened native Cantonese-speaking CI users. RESULTS: Percent correct word, segmental structure, and tone identification scores were calculated. While word and segmental structure identification accuracy remained similar between the two processing conditions, tone identification in noise was better with tone-enhanced ACE than with conventional ACE. Significant improvement on tone perception was found only for the female voice. CONCLUSIONS: Temporal periodicity cues are important to tone perception in noise. Pitch and tone perception by CI users could be improved when listeners received enhanced temporal periodicity cues.

RESUMO

Functional human insulin-Au nanodots (NDs) are synthesized for the in vivo imaging of insulin metabolism. Benefiting from its efficient red to near infrared fluorescence, deep tissue subcellular uptake of insulin-Au NDs can be clearly resolved through a least-invasive harmonic generation and two-photon fluorescence (TPF) microscope. In vivo investigations on mice ear and ex vivo assays on human fat tissues conclude that cells with rich insulin receptors have higher uptake of administrated insulin. Interestingly, the insulin-Au NDs can even permeate into lipid droplets (LDs) of adipocytes. Using this newly discovered metabolic phenomenon of insulin, it is found that enlarged adipocytes in type II diabetes mice have higher adjacent/LD concentration contrast with small-sized ones in wild type mice. For human clinical samples, the epicardial adipocytes of patients with diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD) also show elevated adjacent/LD concentration contrast. As a result, human insulin-Au nanodots provide a new approach to explore subcellular insulin metabolism in model animals or patients with metabolic or cardiovascular diseases.

RESUMO

Using third harmonic generation (THG) microscopy, we demonstrate that granularity differences of leukocytes can be revealed without a label. Excited by a 1230 nm femtosecond laser, THG signals were generated at a significantly higher level in neutrophils than other mononuclear cells, whereas signals in agranular lymphocytes were one order of magnitude smaller. Interestingly, the characteristic THG features can also be observed in vivo to track the newly recruited leukocytes following lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge. These results suggest that label-free THG imaging may provide timely tracking of leukocyte movement without disturbing the normal cellular or physiological status.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the association between green tea consumption and leukemia. METHODS: A total of 252 cases (90.3% response) and 637 controls (53.4% response) were enrolled. Controls were matched for cases on age and gender. Information was collected on participants' living habits, including tea consumption. Green tea was used as a standard to estimate the total amount of individual catechin consumption. We stratified individual consumption of catechins into four levels. Conditional logistic regression models were fit to subjects aged 0-15 and 16-29 years to evaluate separate associations between leukemia and catechin consumption. RESULTS: A significant inverse association between green tea consumption and leukemia risk was found in individuals aged 16-29 years, whereas no significant association was found in the younger age groups. For the older group with higher amounts of tea consumption (>550 units of catechins), the adjusted odds ratio (OR) compared with the group without tea consumption was 0.47 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.23-0.97]. After we adjusted for smoking status and medical irradiation exposure, the overall OR for all participants was 0.49 (95% CI = 0.27-0.91), indicating an inverse relation between large amounts of catechins and leukemia. CONCLUSION: Drinking sufficient amounts of tea, especially green tea, which contains more catechins than oolong tea and black tea, may reduce the risk of leukemia.

RESUMO

Ectopic salivary gland tissue in sellar turcica is frequently observed in microscopic examination at autopsy. This tissue is considered clinically silent. Only 2 symptomatic cases have been previously reported. Here we report a 28-year-old woman presenting with galactorrhea and hyperprolactinemia. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 6 x 5-mm nodule in the posterior aspect of the pituitary gland. This nodule showed isointensity on T1- and T2-weighted images and less enhancement on post-contrast T1-weighted images. Transsphenoidal exploration revealed a cystic lesion within the pituitary gland, which consisted of a grayish gelatinous content. The pathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of salivary gland rest.

RESUMO

Uterine leiomyosarcoma is a rare malignancy whose presenting symptoms usually are not specific for the disease. The clinical presentations include vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain or pressure, and awareness of an abdominal-pelvic mass. The diagnosis should be considered if rapid uterine enlargement occurs, especially in a post-menopausal woman. Local spreading of the tumor could involve the myometrium, pelvic blood vessels and lymphatics, contiguous pelvic structures, and then the abdominal organs, whereas distant metastasis most often involve the lungs. A 63-year-old female presented a rare uterine leiomyosarcoma metastasis to the skull with the manifestions of a bulging mass over her left occipito-parietal region. On admission, neurological examination revealed right hemiplegia. She underwent total resection of the tumor with the reconstruction of the dura, the skull plate and the scalp. Her post-operative course was smooth and the muscle power of her right limbs was improved from grade 1 to grade 3 after the procedure. The histological diagnosis is leiomyosarcoma. Aggressive management of the metastatic skull tumor is recommended in selected patients at least for a betterquality of life.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: We report a 70-year-old man with a salmon patch conjunctival mass diagnosed as multiple myeloma. DESIGN: Case report. METHODS: Surgical biopsies of the salmon patch conjunctival mass and bone marrow, as well as hematologic workup for multiple myeloma were performed. RESULTS: Conjunctival biopsy revealed heavy myeloma cells with eccentric nuclei and basophilic cytoplasm infiltrate in the conjunctival stroma. Bone marrow biopsy and aspirate showed interstitial infiltrated by myeloma cells, which stained monoclonally for immunoglobulin G (IgG)-kappa light chains. Hematologic tests confirmed the diagnosis of multiple myeloma. CONCLUSIONS: Multiple myeloma is one of the causes of a salmon patch conjunctival lesion and may be included in the differential diagnosis.

RESUMO

Enteric duplication cysts (EDCs) can occur in any portion of the alimentary tract, but are most commonly associated with the small bowel and esophagus. Retroperitoneal location is really unusual. This 19-year-old female was in excellent health, but a week's abdominal pain made her search for a doctor's help. After the detailed examination, surgical intervention was performed under the impression of cystic tumor of the retroperitoneum. A retroperitoneal cystic tumor, 13.0 x 8.0 x 3.5 cm in size, without any communication with the alimentary tract was noted during the operation. Finally, EDC was diagnosed after the pathologic examination of this resected cystic lesion. To our knowledge, there have been only 6 reported cases of EDC of the retroperitoneum in the English literature. This report concerns the seventh case of retroperitoneal EDC, in an adolescent, with different clinical presentation and histopathologic findings from the previous ones.

RESUMO

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) contributes to sporadic lobar intracerebral hemorrhage in older patients, especially those who are more than 70 years old. In clinical practice, a diagnosis of CAA refers to the Boston Criteria, which requires that "definitive" cases be confirmed by pathologic evidence at autopsy. A "Probable" case, means that there is clinical support and that pathologic evidence is available by biopsy from the craniotomy for patients with severe lobar intracerebral hemorrhage. Cerebral amyloid that is deposited in cortical vessels is revealed by apple-green birefringence under polarized light using Congo-red stain. Rebleeding after a first primary intracerebral hemorrhage is common. This paper describes five cases of aged patients with lobar cerebral hemorrhage and craniotomy with hematoma evacuation and biopsy. Pathological results all showed amyloid angiopathy. Various outcomes are discussed, and the literature is reviewed. Findings show that although patients with CAA were at high risk of recurrent hemorrhage after surgery, the mortality rate was relatively low despite the severity of lobar intracerebral hemorrhage.

RESUMO

Primary penile lymphoma is a rare neoplasm. We report a case of this unusual clinical manifestation. A 70-year-old male presented with a painless penile mass for 6 months. Penile ultrasonography disclosed a huge tumor over the left corpus cavernosum. Pathologic examination of needle biopsy showed diffuse, small and T-cell type malignant lymphoma. Whole-body computed tomography scan and bone marrow aspiration revealed no evidence of distant metastasis. We treated this patient with chemotherapy alone and achieved complete remission 2 months later. There was absence of tumor recurrence 20 months after treatment. We review the literature and discuss this uncommon lesion.

RESUMO

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is associated with myeloproliferative and lymphoproliferative neoplasms. The risk of carcinoma of the thyroid gland is increased in these patients. Furthermore, multiple myeloma can present together with some autoimmune diseases. We report the case of a 57-year-old woman with Hashimoto's thyroiditis who developed multiple myeloma with myeloma nephropathy. Her renal function deteriorated to end stage and she required maintenance hemodialysis. Although autoimmune disorder might play an important role in lymphomagenesis in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, it is not known whether the chronic inflammation that takes place in Hashimoto's thyroiditis stimulates the development of multiple myeloma. The pathogenetic mechanisms responsible for the development of multiple myeloma in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis remain unclear.
