RESUMO

Chip-scale photonic systems that manipulate free-space emission have recently attracted attention for applications such as free-space optical communications and solid-state LiDAR. Silicon photonics, as a leading platform for chip-scale integration, needs to offer more versatile control of free-space emission. Here we integrate metasurfaces on silicon photonic waveguides to generate free-space emission with controlled phase and amplitude profiles. We demonstrate experimentally structured beams, including a focused Gaussian beam and a Hermite-Gaussian TEM10 beam, as well as holographic image projections. Our approach is monolithic and CMOS-compatible. The simultaneous phase and amplitude control enable more faithful generation of structured beams and speckle-reduced projection of holographic images.

A data-driven approach to constructing a prosodic grammar of Mandarin read speech is proposed. Prosodic labeling is performed, first, on a large speech corpus with syntactic-tree parsing to add four-level break indices. Two types of prosodic grammatical rules are explored. One type is composed of simplified rules to compute break-type distributions at critical junctures for 5 phrase-level and 11 basic syntactic patterns. The other type entails detailed rules to compute break-type distributions conditioned on syntactic function for four determinative-measure (DM)-related syntactic patterns. Effectiveness of the approach was confirmed by meaningful interpretations of the resulting main prosodic patterns and outliers of targeted syntactic patterns by inferred rules. The main findings are given below. Strong paused breaks are found at VE-clause object (VE, active verb with a sentential object) junctures and junctures after idioms. For DM-related patterns, the entropies of break-type distributions decrease significantly as syntactic functions are involved; break-type distributions on both edges are seriously affected by their syntactic functions; when acting as subject (S) and object (O), their prosodic phenomena support the tendency of Mandarin to be S(VO) (V, verb); strong paused breaks at postboundaries of DM-2-DM-4 are caused by their more complex syntactic structures and greater lengths; and the insertions of modifier + DE (special tag for the word DE) into DM-N (N, noun) junctures cause more paused-break insertions at junctures after DMs.

2D materials' junctions have demonstrated capabilities as metal-free alternatives for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). To date, the HER has been limited to heterojunctions of different compositions or band structures. Here, the potential of local strain modulation based on wrinkled 2D heterostructures is demonstrated, which helps to realize photoelectrocatalytically active junctions. By forming regions of high and low tensile strain in wrinkled WS2 monolayers, local modification of their band structure and internal electric field due to piezoelectricity is realized in the lateral direction. This structure produces efficient electron-hole pair generation due to light trapping and exciton funneling toward the crest of the WS2 wrinkles and enhances exciton separation. Additionally, the formation of wrinkles induces an air gap in-between the 2D layer and substrate, which reduces the interfacial scattering effect and consequently improves the charge-carrier mobility. A detailed study of the strain-dependence of the photocatalytic HER process demonstrates a 2-fold decrease in the Tafel slope and a 30-fold enhancement in exchange current density. Finally, optimization of the light absorption through functionalization with quantum dots produces unprecedented photoelectrocatalytic performance and provides a route toward the scalable formation of strain-modulated WS2 nanojunctions for future green energy generation.

An effective COVID-19 vaccine against broad SARS-CoV-2 variants is still an unmet need. In the study, the vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV)-based vector was used to express the SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein to identify better vaccine designs. The replication-competent of the recombinant VSV-spike virus with C-terminal 19 amino acid truncation (SΔ19 Rep) was generated. A single dose of SΔ19 Rep intranasal vaccination is sufficient to induce protective immunity against SARS-CoV-2 infection in hamsters. All the clones isolated from the SΔ19 Rep virus contained R682G mutation located at the Furin cleavage site. An additional S813Y mutation close to the TMPRSS2 cleavage site was identified in some clones. The enzymatic processing of S protein was blocked by these mutations. The vaccination of the R682G-S813Y virus produced a high antibody response against S protein and a robust S protein-specific CD8+ T cell response. The vaccinated animals were protected from the lethal SARS-CoV-2 (delta variant) challenge. The S antigen with resistance to enzymatic processes by Furin and TMPRSS2 will provide better immunogenicity for vaccine design.

It is well known that phonon-induced relaxation processes play a significant role in accelerating magnetization relaxation in the low-temperature regime. Unfortunately, many SIMs (single-ion magnets) suffer from being quenched by these mechanisms such that neither out-of-phase signals nor magnetization hysteresis can be readily observed. Nevertheless, because it involves molecular motions at low-frequency (low-energy) levels, methods for synthetically controlling this factor have not yet been addressed by chemists. In this study, we prepared a series of three compounds in which one contains a rigid chelating ligand, and the other two contain analogous ligands that can coordinate more liberally. To our surprise, compound 1, with a rigid chelating ligand, displayed promising SIM behavior with out-of-phase signals up to 11 K in a zero d.c. magnetic field at an a.c. frequency of 1000 Hz. The other two (2 and 3) with dangling ligands failed to show significant out-of-phase signals until an extra d.c. field was applied. The results of magnetization relaxation studies suggest that the phonon-induced relaxation processes play an essential role in 2 and 3, even at very low temperatures. Nevertheless, the rigid chelating ligand in 1 prevents the molecule from being involved in phonon-induced relaxation processes that seriously interfere with the magnetization relaxation up to 5.6 K. Therefore, we concluded that the presence of a rigid chelating ligand can efficiently change the phonon-induced relaxation processes at low temperatures.

Two-dimensional molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has attracted increasing attention due to its promise for next-generation electronics. To realize MoS2-based electronics, however, a synthesis method is required that produces a uniform single-layer material and that is compatible with existing semiconductor fabrication techniques. Here, we demonstrate that uniform films of single-layer MoS2 can be directly produced on Si/SiO2 at wafer-scale without the use of catalysts or promoters. Control of the precursor transport through oxygen dosing yielded complete coverage and increased connectivity between crystalline MoS2 domains. Spectroscopic characterization and carrier transport measurements furthermore revealed a reduced density of defects compared to conventional chemical vapor deposition growth that increased the quantum yield over ten-fold. To demonstrate the impact of enhanced scale and optoelectronic performance, centimeter-scale arrays of MoS2 photosensors were produced that demonstrate unprecedentedly high and uniform responsivity. Our approach improves the prospect of MoS2 for future applications.

The clean production of hydrogen from water using sunlight has emerged as a sustainable alternative toward large-scale energy generation and storage. However, designing photoactive semiconductors that are suitable for both light harvesting and water splitting is a pivotal challenge. Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) are considered as promising photocatalysts because of their wide range of available electronic properties and compositional variability. However, trade-offs between carrier transport efficiency, light absorption, and electrochemical reactivity have limited their prospects. We here combine two approaches that synergistically enhance the efficiency of photocarrier generation and electrocatalytic efficiency of two-dimensional (2D) TMDs. The arrangement of monolayer WS2 and MoS2 into a heterojunction and subsequent nanostructuring into a nanoscroll (NS) yields significant modifications of fundamental properties from its constituents. Spectroscopic characterization and ab initio simulation demonstrate the beneficial effects of straining and wall interactions on the band structure of such a heterojunction-NS that enhance the electrochemical reaction rate by an order of magnitude compared to planar heterojunctions. Phototrapping in this NS further increases the light-matter interaction and yields superior photocatalytic performance compared to previously reported 2D material catalysts and is comparable to noble-metal catalyst systems in the photoelectrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (PEC-HER) process. Our approach highlights the potential of morphologically varied TMD-based catalysts for PEC-HER.

The bifunctional ligands of isonicotinic acid (Py-4-COOH) and 4-pyrid-4-ylbenzoic acid (Pybz-4-COOH) instead of polypyridines were therefore reacted with (Re(CO)4)3(C3N3S3) (C3N3S3 = cyanurate trianion), resulting in the formation of two trinuclear [(Re(CO)3)3(C3N3S3)(Py-4-COOH)3] (1) and [(Re(CO)3)3(C3N3S3)(Pybz-4-COOH)3] (2), respectively. In the meantime, both complexes 1 and 2 are connected by three bifurcated hydrogen bonds between their carboxylic acid moieties Py-4-COOH and Pybz-4-COOH to form the supramolecular trigonal-prismatic and -antiprismatic structures, respectively. It is noted that complex 1 can further react with copper(II) nitrate upon deprotonation to give nonanuclear [(Re(CO)3)3(C3N3S3)(Py-4-COO)3]2Cu3(H2O)9 (3), where two trinuclear [(Re(CO)3)3(C3N3S3)(Py-4-COO)3] moieties are connected by three penta-coordinate copper(II) ions, each coordinating to two carboxylates and three water molecules, to form the trigonal-prismatic structure. Surprisingly, addition of pyrazine (pz) in the synthetic process of complex 3 resulted in serendipitous isolation of a rare example of octadecanuclear {[(Re(CO)3)3(C3N3S3)(Py-4-COO)3]2Cu3(H2O)6(pz)2}2 (4), which can be regarded as a dimer of complex 3, connected by two bridging pz ligands. Interestingly, both complexes 3 and 4 are heteronuclear molecular Re(I)-Cu(II) boxes, constructed by a complex-as-a-ligand strategy. Furthermore, complexes 1 and 2 can exhibit respective low-energy luminescence at ca. 561 and 534 nm at room temperature upon photoexcitation, and complex 3 is found to display antiferromagnetic coupling of -127.68 and -134.70 cm-1, possibly due to multiple hydrogen bonds inducing significant Cu(II)···Cu(II) coupling.

Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) is a human pathogen causing hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) in children. Its infection can lead to severe neurological diseases or even death in some cases. While being produced in a large quantity during infection, viral proteins often require the assistance from cellular chaperones for proper folding. In this study, we found that heat shock protein A6 (HSPA6), whose function in viral life cycle is scarcely studied, was induced and functioned as a positive regulator for EV-A71 infection. Depletion of HSPA6 led to the reductions of EV-A71 viral proteins, viral RNA and virions as a result of the downregulation of internal ribosomal entry site (IRES)-mediated translation. Unlike other HSP70 isoforms such as HSPA1, HSPA8, and HSPA9, which regulate all phases of the EV-A71 life, HSPA6 was required for the IRES-mediated translation only. Unexpectedly, the importance of HSPA6 in the IRES activity could be observed in the absence of viral proteins, suggesting that HSPA6 facilitated IRES activity through cellular factor(s) instead of viral proteins. Intriguingly, the knockdown of HSPA6 also caused the reduction of luciferase activity driven by the IRES from coxsackievirus A16, echovirus 9, encephalomyocarditis virus, or hepatitis C virus, supporting that HSPA6 may assist the function of a cellular protein generally required for viral IRES activities.

An 88-year-old woman was brought to the hospital immediately after her neighbours noticed that she was bleeding from her right eye. On examination, her right eye was phthisic with maggot infestation of her right orbit. Over a hundred live maggots were extracted using forceps. Computed tomography scan revealed the infestation was confined to the right orbit. The patient underwent exenteration of the right orbit under general anaesthesia. The species was identified by an entomologist as Chrysomya bezziana, which has aggressive larvae that eat living tissue. This case report demonstrates that orbital myiasis caused by C. bezziana poses a very real risk of intracranial invasion as they feed on living tissues. Adjacent tissue destruction can be very rapid and definitive treatment involves urgent removal of its larvae via surgical debridement. To our knowledge, we are reporting the first case of orbital myiasis from a patient in Malaysia. Therefore, our case report may be helpful in the management of similar case of orbital myiasis.

Nanoscrolls are a class of nanostructures where atomic layers of 2D materials are stacked consecutively in a coaxial manner to form a 1D spiral topography. Self-assembly of chemical vapor deposition grown 2D WS2 monolayer into quasi-1D van der Waals scroll structure instigates a plethora of unique physiochemical properties significantly different from its 2D counterparts. The physical properties of such nanoscrolls can be greatly manipulated upon hybridizing them with high-quantum-yield colloidal quantum dots, forming 0D/2D structures. The efficient dissociation of excitons at the heterojunctions of QD/2D hybridized nanoscrolls exhibits a 3000-fold increased photosensitivity compared to the pristine 2D-material-based nanoscroll. The synergistic effects of confined geometry and efficient QD scatterers produce a nanocavity with multiple feedback loops, resulting in coherent lasing action with an unprecedentedly low lasing threshold. Predominant localization of the excitons along the circumference of this helical scroll results in a 12-fold brighter emission for the parallel-polarized transition compared to the perpendicular one, as confirmed by finite-difference time-domain simulation. The versatility of hybridized nanoscrolls and their unique properties opens up a powerful route for not-yet-realized devices toward practical applications.

Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) is one of the major etiologic agents causing hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) in children and occasionally causes severe neurological diseases or even death. EV-A71 replicates rapidly in host cells. For a successful infection, viruses produce large quantities of viral proteins in a short period, which requires cellular chaperone proteins for viral protein folding and viral particle assembly. In this study, we explored the roles of the heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) chaperone subnetwork in the EV-A71 life cycle. Our results revealed that EV-A71 exploits multiple HSP70s at each step of the viral life cycle, i.e., viral entry, translation, replication, assembly and release, and that each HSP70 typically functions in several stages of the life cycle. For example, the HSP70 isoforms HSPA1, HSPA8, and HSPA9 are required for viral entry and the translational steps of the infection. HSPA8 and HSPA9 may facilitate folding and stabilize viral proteins 3D and 2C, respectively, thus contributing to the formation of a replication complex. HSPA8 and HSPA9 also promote viral particle assembly, whereas HSPA1 and HSPA8 are involved in viral particle release. Because of the importance of various HSP70s at distinct steps of the viral life cycle, an allosteric inhibitor, JG40, which targets all HSP70s, significantly blocks EV-A71 infection. JG40 also blocks the replication of several other enteroviruses, such as coxsackievirus (CV) A16, CVB1, CVB3, and echovirus 11. Thus, targeting HSP70s may be a means of providing broad-spectrum antiviral therapy.

AIM: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) quality affects survival after cardiac arrest. We aimed to investigate if a smartwatch with real-time feedback can improve CPR quality by healthcare professionals. METHODS: An app providing real-time audiovisual feedback was developed for a smartwatch. Emergency Department (ED) professionals were recruited and randomly allocated to either the intervention group wearing a smartwatch with the preinstalled app, or to a control group. All participants were asked to perform a two-minute CPR on a manikin at a 30:2 compression-ventilation ratio. Primary outcomes were the mean CCR and CCD measured on the manikin. A secondary outcome was the percentage of chest compressions meeting both the guideline-recommended rate (100-120 min-1) and depth (50-60 mm) of high-quality CPR during a 2-min period. Differences between groups were evaluated with t-test, Chi-Square test, or Mann-Whitney U test depending on the distribution. RESULTS: Eighty participants were recruited. 40 people were assigned to the intervention and 40 to the control group. The compression rates (mean ± SD, min-1) were significantly faster (but above the guideline recommendation, P < 0.001) in the control (129.1 ± 14.9) than in the intervention group (112.0 ± 3.5). The compression depths (mean ± SD, mm) were significantly deeper (P < 0.001) in the intervention (50.9 ± 6.6) than in the control group (39.0 ± 8.7). The percentage (%) of high-quality CPR was significantly higher (P < 0.001) in the intervention (median 39.4, IQR 27.1-50.1) than in the control group (median 0.0, IQR 0.0-0.0). CONCLUSION: Without real-time feedback, chest compressions tend to be too fast and too shallow. CPR quality can be improved with the assistance of a smartwatch providing real-time feedback.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs), platelet-rich fibrin releasates (PRFr), and chondrocyte transplantation in rabbit acute osteochondral defects. METHODS: Thirty rabbits were randomly assigned to five groups: untreated controls; ADSCs alone; PRFr alone; PRFr + ADSCs; and PRFr + chondrocytes. The critical size osteochondral defects in right knee femoral condyles were injected intra-articularly according to the groups, as listed. The experimental rabbits received treatments once a week for two weeks postoperatively. All evaluations were conducted for 14 weeks following surgery, and the regenerated cartilages were assessed by gross inspection and histological examination. RESULTS: There were no complications encountered in any of the rabbits. The size of the defect decreased and the volume of repaired cartilage increased in the medial femoral condyles of the PRFr + ADSCs group. Relative to the ADSCs or PRFr group, histological examination demonstrated that the PRFr + ADSCs group had thicker hyaline cartilage-specific extracellular matrix. Grading scores revealed that PRFr + ADSCs injection had better matrix, cell distribution, and surface indices than other groups (P < 0.05). However, the histological scores reported for PRFr + chondrocytes on cartilage repair were similar to those of PRFr, and there were no significant between-group differences. CONCLUSIONS: These findings showed that intra-articular injections of PRFr + ADSCs into the knee can reduce cartilage defects by regenerating hyaline-like cartilage without complications. This approach may provide an alternative method for functional reconstruction of acute osteochondral defects with an unlimited source of cells and releasates.

INTRODUCTION: High-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a key factor affecting cardiac arrest survival. Accurate monitoring and real-time feedback are emphasized to improve CPR quality. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a novel depth estimation algorithm based on a smartwatch equipped with a built-in accelerometer for feedback instructions during CPR. METHODS: For data collection and model building, researchers wore an Android Wear smartwatch and performed chest compression-only CPR on a Resusci Anne QCPR training manikin. We developed an algorithm based on the assumptions that (1) maximal acceleration measured by the smartwatch accelerometer and the chest compression depth (CCD) are positively correlated and (2) the magnitude of acceleration at a specific time point and interval is correlated with its neighboring points. We defined a statistic value M as a function of time and the magnitude of maximal acceleration. We labeled and processed collected data and determined the relationship between M value, compression rate and CCD. We built a model accordingly, and developed a smartwatch app capable of detecting CCD. For validation, researchers wore a smartwatch with the preinstalled app and performed chest compression-only CPR on the manikin at target sessions. We compared the CCD results given by the smartwatch and the reference using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test (WSRT), and used Bland-Altman (BA) analysis to assess the agreement between the two methods. RESULTS: We analyzed a total of 3978 compressions that covered the target rate of 80-140/min and CCD of 4-7 cm. WSRT showed that there was no significant difference between the two methods (P = 0.084). By BA analysis the mean of differences was 0.003 and the bias between the two methods was not significant (95% CI: -0.079 to 0.085). CONCLUSION: Our study indicates that the algorithm developed for estimating CCD based on a smartwatch with a built-in accelerometer is promising. Further studies will be conducted to evaluate its application for CPR training and clinical practice.

The translation of enterovirus 71 (EV71) is mediated by an internal ribosome entry site (IRES)-dependent manner. EV71 IRES comprises five highly structured domains (domains II-VI) in the 5'-untranslated region of the viral mRNA. A conserved AUG triplet residing in domain VI is proposed to be the ribosome entry site. It is thus envisaged that the highly structured conformation of domain VI may actually reduce the accessibility of the AUG triplet to the ribosome. This study identified a DEAD-box family RNA helicase, DDX3X, that positively regulated the EV71 IRES-dependent translation. The helicase activity of DDX3X was required for the stimulation of EV71 IRES activity; however, DDX3X was no longer important for the IRES activity when the secondary structure of domain VI was destabilized. DDX3X interacted with the truncated eIF4G which bound specifically to domain V. Thus, we proposed that DDX3X might bind to domain VI or a region nearby via the interaction with the truncated eIF4G, and subsequently unwound the secondary structure of domain VI to facilitate ribosome entry. Additionally, we demonstrated that the viral 2Apro and 3Cpro enhanced the IRES-dependent translation via their protease activities. Together, these results indicate that DDX3X is an important RNA helicase involved in EV71 IRES-dependent translation and that IRES translation is enhanced by viral infection, partly mediated by viral protease activity.

BACKGROUND: Health education (HE) courses in schools are vital paths for improving teenagers' health literacy. HE and physical education (PE) teachers lead HE courses, and their teaching intentions and competency influence the effectiveness of the courses and the ability to promote students' health literacy. This study attempted to understand HE and PE teachers' health literacy teaching intentions and professional competency and to investigate their relationships. METHODS: This study adopted a cross-sectional design. A questionnaire survey was administered to 906 middle school HE and PE teachers in Taiwan by mail, and 545 provided valid data with consent. RESULTS: Participants had a favorable health literacy (47.78/50), positive health literacy teaching beliefs and attitudes, and acceptable efficacy. They intended to implement health literacy instruction within the subsequent year. Teaching beliefs, attitudes, and efficacy were all positively correlated with intentions (all p < .001). Demographic variables, health literacy, and teaching beliefs, attitudes, and efficacy explained 33.5% of the variance of teaching intentions. CONCLUSION: Teaching beliefs, attitudes, and efficacy were crucial predictors of health literacy teaching intentions. To improve students' health literacy, educational authorities and schools should pay attention to HE and PE teachers' intentions and vital factors, thereby enhancing teachers' willingness to perform health literacy instruction.

Herein we report the employment of the quintuply bonded dichromium amidinates [Cr{κ2 -HC(N-2,6-i Pr2 C6 H3 )(N-2,6-R2 C6 H3 )}]2 (R=iPr (1), Me (7)) as catalysts to mediate the [2+2+2] cyclotrimerization of terminal alkynes giving 1,3,5-trisubstituted benzenes. During the catalysis, the ultrashort Cr-Cr quintuple bond underwent reversible cleavage/formation, corroborated by the characterization of two inverted arene sandwich dichromium complexes (µ-η6 :η6 -1,3,5-(Me3 Si)3 C6 H3 )[Cr{κ2 -HC(N-2,6-i Pr2 C6 H3 )(N-2,6-R2 C6 H3 )}]2 (R=i Pr (5), Me (8)). In the presence of σ donors, such as THF and 2,4,6-Me3 C6 H2 CN, the bridging arene 1,3,5-(Me3 Si)3 C6 H3 in 5 and 8 was extruded and 1 and 7 were regenerated. Theoretical calculations were employed to disclose the reaction pathways of these highly regioselective [2+2+2] cylcotrimerization reactions of terminal alkynes.

Based on time-resolved electroluminescence (TREL) measurement, more efficient carrier injection, transport, relaxation, and recombination associated with a stronger carrier localization and a low polarization effect in a nonpolar m-plane InGaN/GaN light emitting diode (m-LED), compared with those in a polar c-LED, are reported. With a higher applied voltage in the c-LED, decreasing response time and rising time improve device performance, but a longer recombination time degrades luminescence efficiency. By using an m-LED with a stronger carrier localization and a low polarization effect, shorter response, rising, and recombination times provide more efficient carrier injection, transport, relaxation, and recombination. These advantages can be realized for high-power and high-speed flash LEDs. In addition, with a weaker carrier localization and a polarization effect in the c-LED, the slower radiative and faster nonradiative decay rates at a larger applied voltage result in the slower total decay rate and the lower luminescence efficiency. For the m-LED at a higher applied voltage, a slow decreasing nonradiative decay rate is beneficial to device performance, while the more slowly decreasing and overall faster radiative decay rate of the m-LED than that of the c-LED demonstrates that a stronger carrier localization and a reduced polarization effect are efficient for carrier recombination. The resulting recombination dynamics are correlated with the device characteristics and performance of the c- and m-LEDs.

Treating infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens is challenging, and there is concern regarding the toxicity of the most effective antimicrobials for Gram-negative pathogens. We hypothesized that conjugating a fatty acid moiety onto a peptide dimer could maximize the interaction with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and facilitate the permeabilization of the LPS barrier, thereby improving potency against Gram-negative pathogens. We systematically designed a series of N-lipidated peptide dimers that are active against Gram-negative bacteria, including carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE). The optimized lipid length was 6-10 carbons. At these lipid lengths, the N-lipidated peptide dimers exhibited strong LPS permeabilization. Compound 23 exhibited synergy with select antibiotics in most of the combinations tested. 23 and 32 also displayed rapid bactericidal activity. Importantly, 23 and 32 were nonhemolytic at 10 mg/mL, with no cellular or in vivo toxicity. These characteristics suggest that these compounds can overcome the limitations of current Gram-negative-targeted antimicrobials such as polymyxin B.
