RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine systemic erythropoietin's effect on the Achilles tendon's healing in a rat model. METHODS: Twenty-five adult Wistar rats were randomly assigned to one of two groups. The Achilles tendon of each rat was transected 5 mm proximal to its insertion to the calcaneus. All Achilles tendons were then repaired using modified Kessler methods. A single dose (5000 U/kg) of intraperitoneal erythropoietin (EPO) was administered to group I. Group II was a control group and did not receive an EPO injection. Four rats from each group were sacrificed at 1, 3 and 6 weeks after injection. Histopathological assessments were performed by observers blinded to the treatment. RESULTS: Groups I and II showed a similar increase in fibroblast cytoplasmic content and fibrillar collagen in the extracellular matrix. Collagen deposition, cellular proliferation, number of lipid vacuoles and capillary increases were similar between the groups. CONCLUSION: Evidence from this study has shown no direct effect of a single systemic high dose of EPO on the histological properties of the Achilles tendon in rats.

RESUMO

There are limited data on the influence of fructose rich diet on the male reproductive system. Kefir may have health beneficial effects, but its mechanism of action remains mostly unclear. Herein, we investigated the impact of dietary high fructose on tight junction proteins and mitogenic pathways in rat testis as well as their modulation by kefir supplementation. Twenty-two male Wistar rats (4 weeks old) were divided into the following three groups: Control; Fructose; Fructose + Kefir. Fructose was added to drinking water at concentration of 20% and administered to the rats for 15 weeks and kefir was supplemented by gavage once a day during final 6 weeks. Dietary fructose-induced testicular degeneration was associated with the downregulation of the blood-testis barrier proteins, claudin-11 and N-cadherin as well as SIRT1 expression in testicular tissue of rats. However, p38MAPK, p-p38MAPK and p-ERK1/2 levels were increased in testis of fructose-fed rats. Interestingly, JNK1 and p-JNK1 protein levels were decreased following this dietary intervention. Raf1, ERK1/2, and caspase 3 and TUNEL staining of the testis reveal the activation of apoptosis due to fructose intake. Kefir supplementation markedly promoted the expression of claudin-11, SIRT1, JNK1 and p-JNK1 but suppressed testicular mitogenic and apoptotic factors in fructose-fed rats.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Cysticercus tenuicollis, the metacestode stage of Taenia hydatigena has a worldwide distribution and is particularly common in rural areas and developing countries. In rare cases, T. hydatigena infection may result in the death of its host due to severe damage or secondary bacterial infections. Generally, when multiple cysts are attached to the liver, it causes economic losses. The infection can be detected using morphological, histopathological and more recently, molecular investigations. METHODS: In the present study, we describe molecular and morphological characterization of C. tenuicollis detected in a 3 month-old female red deer (Cervus elaphus) during necropsy. Cystic samples were stained with haematoxylin-eosin (HE) and Masson's trichrome stain for histopathological examination, and molecular characterization of the complete mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene region was performed. PURPOSE: This study provides the first morphological, histopathological, and molecular data on C. tenuicollis isolated from red deer in Turkey.

RESUMO

In this study a mink showing hard pad disease like symptoms was euthanised. Heart blood and various tissue samples collected during necroscopy and tested by specific RT-PCR were found positive for CDV. H and F gene segments of the CDV strain was also partially sequenced using the appropriate primers, and subsequently the sequences were analysed and compared with same gene fragment sequence of other CDV isolates from different countries. The results of the phylogenetic analysis showed that the Turkish-Mink distemper strain is closely related to European CDV strains of lineage 1. Additionally, the distemper antigen was also detected when the tissue samples were examined by histology or immunohistochemistry.
