RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The use of biological graft in laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair (LIHR) has been controversial, and there is a lack of high-level evidence to confirm the value of biological graft in LIHR. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel composite biologics in LIHR. METHODS: A multicenter, single-blinded, randomized controlled clinical trial was designed. Fifty patients with unilateral primary inguinal hernia were randomly assigned to the experimental and control group (1:1). The experimental group was repaired with a non-crosslinked composite extracellular matrix from porcine urinary bladder matrix and small intestinal submucosa (UBM/SIS). The control group was repaired with a lightweight, large-pore, synthetic mesh. The primary endpoint was the effectiveness rate of hernia repair. RESULTS: The patients were followed up for four years. No significant difference was found between the experimental group and the control group in the effective rate of hernia repair (24/24[100%] vs 21/22[95.45%], RR, 0.4667; 95%CI, 0.3294-2.304; P = 0.4783). There was no fever, seroma, infection, groin pain, foreign body discomfort or recurrence in the experimental group during the follow-up. In the control group, there were 2 cases of seroma 14 days after operation, 1 case of groin discomfort 60 days after operation and one case of recurrence 410 days after surgery. CONCLUSION: Compared with the lightweight synthetic mesh, the novel UBM/SIS graft has comparable short-term and medium-term effectiveness in LIHR, and the incidence of postoperative complications such as seroma groin discomfort is lower. RESUMO

The objective of this study was to investigate the immunopotential of ruminal lipopolysaccharides (LPS) on cultured primary bovine rumen epithelial cells (REC). Primary bovine REC were isolated from 6 yearling steers and grown in culture for 3 experiments. Experiment 1 aimed to determine the immunopotential of ruminal LPS, experiment 2 aimed to assess tolerance to chronic LPS exposure, and experiment 3 aimed to evaluate antagonistic interactions between ruminal and Escherichia coli LPS. In experiments 1 and 2, REC were exposed to nonpyrogenic water, 20 µg/mL E. coli LPS (EC20), 10 µg/mL ruminal LPS, 20 µg/mL ruminal LPS, and 40 µg/mL ruminal LPS, either continuously or intermittently. For the continuous exposure, REC underwent a 6 h exposure, whereas for the intermittent exposure, the procedure was: (1) a 12 h continuous exposure to treatments followed by LPS removal for 24 h and then another 12 h of exposure (RPT), and (2) a 12 h continuous exposure to treatments followed by LPS removal and a recovery period of 36 h (RCV). In experiment 3, REC were exposed to nonpyrogenic water, 1 µg/mL E. coli LPS, 1 µg/mL ruminal LPS to 1 µg/mL E. coli LPS, 10 µg/mL ruminal LPS to 1 µg/mL E. coli LPS, and 50 µg/mL ruminal LPS to 1 µg/mL E. coli LPS. Each experiment was done as a complete randomized block design with 6 REC donors. The REC-donor was used as blocking factor. Each treatment had 2 technical replicates, and treatment responses for all data were analyzed with the MIXED procedure of SAS. For all experiments, total RNA was extracted from REC and real-time quantitative PCR was performed to determine the relative expression of genes for toll-like receptors (TLR2 and TLR4), proinflammatory cytokines (TNF, IL1B, and IL6), chemokines (CXCL2 and CXCL8), growth factor-like cytokines (CSF2 and TGFB1), and a lipid mediator (PTGS2). In experiment 1, the targeted genes were upregulated by EC20, whereas all ruminal LPS treatments resulted in a lower transcript abundance. Regarding RPT, and RCV condition, in experiment 2, the expression of targeted genes was not affected or was at a lower abundance to EC20 when compared with ruminal LPS treatments. Lastly, in experiment 3, all targeted genes resulted in lower or similar transcript abundance on all ruminal LPS ratios. Overall, our results indicate that ruminal LPS have a limited capacity to activate the TLR4/NF-kB pathway and to induce the expression of inflammatory genes.

RESUMO

Objective: To explore the effectiveness and safety of endovascular treatment (EVT) for patients with acute anterior circulation ischemic stroke with symptom onset exceeding 24 h. Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, data were extracted from patients who underwent endovascular treatment for acute anterior circulation ischemic stroke at the First Hospital of Jilin University from February 2019 to April 2022. A total of 569 patients were included, with a mean age of 63 (54-70) years. Among them, 398 (69.9%) were male. The patients were divided into two groups based on symptom onset time:>24 h group and≤24 h group. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to match the patients in a 1︰1 ratio between the>24 h group and the≤24 h group. Logistic regression was used to evaluate the impact of symptom onset time on outcome events. Results: Before PSM, compared with≤24 h group, the>24 h group had a younger age [56 (48, 64) vs. 64 (55, 70), Z=-3. 60, P<0.001]; lower proportion of prior atrial fibrillation [1.8% (1/57) vs. 21.1% (108/512), χ2=12.39, P<0.001]; lower proportion of wake-up stroke [7.0% (4/57) vs. 27.7% (142/512), χ2=11.54, P<0.001]; lower baseline NIHSS score [11.0 (7.5, 14.0) vs. 13.0 (10.0, 16.0), Z=-3.22, P<0.001]; and a higher American Society of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology/Society of Interventional Radiology(ASITN/SIR) grading (P<0.001). After PSM, there were no significant differences in baseline characteristics between the two groups. There was no significant difference in the proportion of patients with a modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score≤2 at 90 days after surgery between the two groups (before matching: 42.0% vs. 40.4%, OR=0.745, 95%CI 0.407-1.362, P=0.339; after matching: 51.8% vs. 39.3%, OR=0.511, 95%CI 0.212-1.236, P=0.136). No significant differences were observed in the incidence of any safety outcomes between the>24 h group and the≤24 h group. Conclusion: For patients with acute anterior circulation ischemic stroke with symptom onset exceeding 24 h, EVT is feasible after strict radiological screening and has similar safety and effectiveness as for patients with symptom onset under 24 h.

RESUMO

The presence of anatomical variants in the body may pose clinical challenges to inexperienced surgeons or clinicians and could cause misdiagnosis or treatment errors. Similarly, anatomical variations in cadavers pose educational dilemmas to students in gross anatomy dissection because of the inadequate coverage of anatomical variants in currently available resources, including textbooks. Students experience challenges in their learning experience, dissection process, and translation of clinically relevant information when presented with an anatomical variation. The authors report the rare finding of a bilateral sternalis muscle variant and asymmetrically bilateral extensor carpi radialis intermedius muscles in a single anatomical donor during dissection and the dilemma of students to find out what they were.

RESUMO

The incidence of parastomal hernia is substantially high, significantly affecting the quality of life of patients with stoma. How to effectively solve the problem of parastomal hernia is a long-term focus of hernia and abdominal wall surgery and colorectal surgery. The European Hernia Society guidelines on prevention and treatment of parastomal hernia published in 2018 has recommended the use of a prophylactic mesh to prevent parastomal hernia for the first time. In the following 5 years, more randomized controlled trials of multi-center, large-sample, double-blind, long-term follow-up have been published, and no significant effect of mesh prophylaxis has been observed on the incidence of parastomal hernia. However, whether mesh could decrease surgical intervention by limiting the symptoms of parastomal hernias would become a potential value of prophylaxis, which requires further research to elucidate.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the effect of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation(NIPPV) on all-cause mortality in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-obstructive sleep apnea overlap syndrome(OVS) through long-term follow-up. Methods: A total of 187 OVS patients were divided into the NIPPV group(n=92) and the non-NIPPV group(n=95). Of these, 85 males and 7 females were in the NIPPV group with an average age of (66.5±8.5) years(range 47-80 years); 89 males and 6 females were in the non-NIPPV group with an average age of (67.4±7.8) years(range 44-79 years). Follow-up was performed from enrolment with an average duration of 39(20, 51) months. The all-cause mortality was compared between the two groups. Result: There were no significant differences in their baseline clinical characteristics(all P>0.05), indicating that the data from the two groups were comparable. The Kaplan-Meier curve showed no difference in all-cause mortality between the two groups(log rank P=0.229). However, deaths from cardio-cerebrovascular diseases were higher in the non-NIPPV than in the NIPPV group(15.8% vs. 6.5%,P=0.045). Age, BMI, neck circumference, PaCO2, FEV1, FEV1%, moderate to severe OSA(AHI>15 events/h), mMRC, CAT, number of acute exacerbations of COPD and number of hospitalizations were associated with all-cause death in OVS patients; among which, age(HR 1.067, 95%CI 1.017-1.119, P=0.008), FEV1(HR 0.378, 95%CI 0.176-0.811, P=0.013), and number of COPD exacerbations(HR 1.298, 95%CI 1.102-1.530, P=0.002) were independent risk factors for all-cause mortality in OVS patients. Conclusions: The combination of NIPPV and conventional treatment may reduce cardio-cerebrovascular disease-related mortality in OVS patients. The deceased OVS patients had severe airflow limitation and mild to moderate OSA. Old age, low FEV1 and COPD exacerbations were independent risk factors for all-cause mortality in OVS patients.

RESUMO

The limitation of suitable anomalous valley Hall effect (AVHE) materials has seriously hindered the booming development and the widespread application of valleytronics. Here, through the first-principles calculations, we propose a MXene monolayer Y3N2O2 with spontaneous valley polarization (VP) of 21.3 meV, which induces intrinsic AVHE. The VP can be modulated linearly, which provides a route of effective control of the valley signals. Importantly, VP can be enhanced by adjusting up the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) based on a SOC Hamiltonian model and the first-principles calculations. From this physics underlying, we substitute the Y atom with the La atom and further propose the monolayer La3N2O2, in which the heavy atom La will provide stronger SOC than Y atom. The spontaneous VP in La3N2O2 is enhanced to 100.4 meV, so AVHE can be easily achieved. Our work not only provides compelling candidates for AVHE materials but also offers a novel mindset for finding suitable valleytronic devices.

RESUMO

Trocar placement and camera-dissection in the midline is the most commonly applied method for total extraperitoneal inguinal hernia repair (TEP), for which the theory of membrane anatomy has guiding significance. We hereby applies the theories and concepts, such as "fascia lining", "multi-layer", "inter-fascial planes", "combined inter-fascial plane" and "plane transition", to elucidate the key steps of TEP, for instance, space creation, hernia sac dissection, mesh flattening. Camera-dissection is performed along the posterior sheath of the rectus abdominis. Firstly, the camera enters retro-rectus space locating between the rectus abdominis and the transversalis fascia (TF). There are inferior epigastric vessels and their branches in the retro-rectus space, thus over-dissection should be avoided. Secondly, the camera goes downward through the TF into the pre-peritoneal space. The pre-peritoneal space is divided into the parietal plane and visceral plane by pre-peritoneal fascia (PPF). Both bladder and spermatic cord components locate on the visceral plane. Dissection of the median area should be implemented on the parietal plane, namely "surgical space", to protect the bladder. The parietal plane is the "holy plane" of TEP. Dissection of the indirect hernia area should be implemented on the visceral plane, namely "anatomical space", to protect the spermatic cord components. The reduction of direct hernia could be understood as the easy separation of TF and PPF. The reduction of indirect hernia is relatively difficult separation of peritoneum and spermatic cord components. During the transition of parietal and visceral planes, PPF (especially the pre-peritoneal loop) should be dissected for complete parietalization, in order to flatten the mesh.

RESUMO

Objective: To quantitatively evaluate the relationship between sleep duration and metabolic syndrome in adults in order to set up programs on prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome in this population. Methods: Relevant studies were identified by systematically searching databases before October 2019. All statistical analyses were under the use of Stata 11.0. Results: A total of 656 319 participants including 150 638 cases with metabolic syndrome were involved in thes 38 articles. A U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and metabolic syndrome was noticed. For short and long sleep duration, the OR=1.11 (95%CI: 1.07-1.16) and 1.10 (95%CI: 1.03-1.18), respectively. Subgroup analyses on cross-sectional studies revealed that factors as men, aged under 60 years, being Asians or Caucasians would increase the risk of metabolic syndrome by 6%, 14%, 9%, and 24%, respectively for those with short sleep duration. Factors as aged 60 years and above, being black and with long sleep duration, would increase the risks of metabolic syndrome by 13% and 19%, respectively in women. In subgroup analyses on cohort studies, positive correlation between short sleep duration and metabolic syndrome was observed in both Asian (RR=1.10, 95%CI: 1.07-1.13) and in Caucasians (RR=1.56, 95%CI: 1.08-2.26) populations. Conclusions: Results of this study revealed an association between metabolic syndrome and the duration of sleep. We understand that sleep is a behavior that can be changed step by step, through adequate intervention programs, to reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome which has become an important public health issue.

RESUMO

AIM: Extralevator abdominoperineal excision (ELAPR) is challenging 'conventional' abdominoperineal excision (APR), yet the safety and efficacy of ELAPR is still under debate. We therefore developed a laparoscopic APR with trans-abdominal individualized levator transection (LAPR-TILT) approach and compared the outcome with a conventional laparoscopic APR (CLAPR). METHOD: All eligible patients were entered a single-centre randomized controlled trial to compare CLAPR and LAPR-TILT. We assessed the first 185 patients, including operative findings, complications, histopathology and urogenital function. RESULTS: Ninety-three patients in the CLAPR group and 92 patients in the APR-TILT group were included for analysis. The APR-TILT procedure took less time [137 (101-175) min vs 146 (102-187) min; P = 0.03], mainly owing to faster perineal dissection. APR-TILT resulted in a reduced rate of bowel perforation (1.1% vs 8.6%; P = 0.04), circumferential resection margin positivity (1.1% vs 10.8%; P = 0.01) and postoperative wound complications (5.4% vs 16.2%; P = 0.02) compared with the CLAPR procedure. At a median follow-up of 19 months after surgery, three patients (3.2%) in the CLAPR group had tumour recurrence while no tumour recurrence occurred in the LAPR-TILT group. Patients who underwent LAPR-TILT reported fewer urinary or sexual problems (LAPR-TILT vs CLAPR, 10.9% vs 24.7% and 17.4% vs 38.7%, respectively). CONCLUSION: Compared with CLAPR, LAPR-TILT achieved better pathological results for factors that are surrogate parameters for local recurrence. LAPR-TILT could also reduce the risk of urogenital dysfunction.

RESUMO

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Drug-induced nephrotoxicity is potentially lethal. When sodium aescinate is given to surgical inpatients to treat postoperative inflammation and oedema, adverse drug reactions and drug-drug interactions must be closely monitored. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of a 58-year-old man with phalangeal fractures who suffered from acute kidney injury that was most likely induced by the drug interaction between sodium aescinate and ginkgo biloba extract due to the protein-binding and metabolic characteristics of these drugs. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION: Close monitoring and the prompt discontinuation of drugs that have high protein-binding capacity and hepatic metabolism are necessary to avoid drug-drug interactions in patients who are treated with sodium aescinate.

RESUMO

Reciprocal translocation is closely associated with male infertility and recurrent miscarriages. Balanced reciprocal translocations associated with reproductive failures are predominantly observed on chromosome 1. Additionally, infertile male patients present a number of breakpoints throughout chromosome 1. A translocation breakpoint might interrupt the structure of an important gene, leading to male infertility. Here, we report the breakpoints on chromosome 1 translocation and the clinical features presented in carriers, to enable informed genetic counseling of these patients. Balanced reciprocal translocations were found in 1.57% of the tested patients. Among 82 patients, 23 patients (28.05%) were carriers of the chromosome 1 translocation: 12 presented pre-gestational infertility with clinical manifestations of azoospermia or oligozoospermia, while 11 patients presented gestational infertility (able to conceive but with a tendency to miscarry or give birth to a stillborn). The breakpoint at 1p22 was predominantly observed in these patients; additionally, breakpoints at 1p31.2, 1p10, and 1q25 were associated with gestational infertility. Breakpoints at 1p13, 1q12, and 1q21 were associated with pre-gestational infertility. These results suggested that breakpoints at 1p32, 1p13, and 1q21 were predominantly associated with pre-gestational infertility, while that at 1q25 was associated with gestational infertility. Chromosome 1 translocation carriers with infertility presenting as azoospermia or oligospermia should be counseled on chromosomal breakpoints and the different molecular technologies available to facilitate reproduction.

RESUMO

Balanced reciprocal translocations are associated with reproductive failure. Some reciprocal translocation carriers exhibit azoospermia or oligozoospermia, and an association exists between these chromosomal abnormalities and recurrent abortion. Previous reports have indicated the involvement of chromosome 7 translocations in male infertility and recurrent miscarriage. A translocation breakpoint can occur within an important gene, interrupting its structure and leading to male infertility. However, clinical characteristics resulting from chromosome 7 translocation breakpoints have not been studied. Here, we report such breakpoints and their associated clinical features, to enable informed genetic counseling of carriers. Balanced reciprocal translocations were found in 1.57% of the tested patients. Among these 82 individuals, 14 (17.07%) carried a chromosome 7 translocation, of which, five presented with pregestational infertility and clinical manifestations of oligozoospermia or necrospermia, while nine presented with gestational infertility (i.e., were able to conceive, but often resulting in miscarriage). Breakpoints at 7q31 and 7q36 were associated with pregestational infertility, whereas those at 7p10, 7q21.2, 7q22, and 7q32 were connected to gestational infertility. However, the breakpoint at 7p15 was associated with both. Chromosome 7 translocation carriers with pregestational or gestational infertility should be counseled on chromosomal breakpoints and the various molecular technologies available for assisted reproduction.

RESUMO

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of Bailemian capsule combined with self-help cognitive behavioral therapy (CBTI-SH) in treatment of chronic insomnia. Methods: Approved by the Ethics Committee of the hospital, 60 patients with chronic insomnia were randomly divided into two groups, the test group (Bailemian capsule combined with CBTI-SH) and the control group (CBTI-SH alone). Each group contained 30 cases. After 4 weeks for therapy, the sleep quality, mood and adverse reactions of treatment in patients were evaluated by sleep diary, sleep severity index scale (ISI), self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), self-rating depression scale (SDS) and treatment emergent symptom scale (TESS) respectively. The data were statistically analyzed. Results: The total effective rate in the test group was significantly higher than that of the control group (73.3% vs 46.7%, P<0.05). Compared to the control group, the sleep onset latency was significantly shorten [(38.3±13.1) vs (27.5±9.8) min, P<0.05], while the sleep efficiency were increased markedly [(76.6±5.7)% vs (80.5±6.6)%, P<0.05] in the test group. In the test group, the sleep onset latency, the total sleep time, the time in bed and sleep efficiency both improved significantly after treatment [(27.5±9.8) vs (56.2±19.4) min, (334.4±41.6) vs (310.8±31.7) min, (415.6±38.9) vs (446.9±39.9) min, (80.5±6.6)% vs (69.6±4.9)%, all P<0.05], while in the control group, the sleep onset latency, the time in bed and sleep efficiency also improved significantly after therapy [(38.3±13.1) vs (55.2±16.2) min, (430.4±32.6) vs (452.4±34.4) min, (76.6±5.7)% vs (69.9±5.2)%, all P<0.05]. After combined treatment, the SAS and SDS scores [(51.5±6.5) vs (55.0±5.8), (52.0±5.3) vs (55.3±4.4), both P<0.05] both decreased significantly than those of the control group, at the same time, the SAS and SDS scores decreased significantly after treatment in both the test group and the control group [(51.5±6.5) vs (61.5±4.8), (52.0±5.3) vs (60.2±4.5), (55.0±5.8) vs (62.5±3.7), (55.3±4.4) vs (62.2±3.7), all P<0.01]. Conclusion: The efficacy of Bailemian capsule combined with CBTI-SH in the treatment of chronic insomnia is more effective.

RESUMO

To demonstrate that intra-organ splenosis can engraft and develop after being distributed through the vasculature, tiny fragments of splenic tissues were injected into the inferior vena cava or the portal vein to induce intrapulmonary and intrahepatic splenosis in rats. After 1 month, splenic autograft structures in the lung and liver were assessed for structure by histology, for immunologic compartments by immunohistochemistry, for phagocytic function by carbon uptake and for vascular formation by Microfil (a silicon rubber compound) injection. Intrapulmonary and intrahepatic splenoses were indeed able to spread through the vasculature. The intrapulmonary splenic autografts were trapped and spread out in the interstitium, without forming a capsule. White pulp was markedly developed, showing lymphocyte aggregations that consisted in B cells surrounding the dilated vessel. Splenic sinuses were not definitively observed. Although macrophages were detected by immunohistochemistry, they showed no indication of having phagocytized carbon particles from the vessels, implying a closed circulation. In contrast, intrahepatic splenic autografts formed well-developed capsules, trabeculae and red pulp with splenic sinuses. Macrophages detected by immunohistochemistry were observed capturing carbon particles, which clearly revealed an open system circulation, as seen in normal rat spleen. The development of white pulp was poor and lymphocytes consisting in B cells aggregated in the peripheral margins. These results demonstrate that intra-organ splenosis can spread through the vasculature and that the morphologic and immunologic structures formed in these regenerated autografts are influenced by the organ vasculature and extracellular matrix wherein the tissue fragments settled.

RESUMO

Tea polyphenols (TPs) are bioactive flavanol-related catechins that have been shown to protect dopaminergic (DAergic) neurons against neurotoxin-induced injury in mouse Parkinson's disease (PD) models. However, the neuroprotective efficacy of TP has not been investigated in nonhuman PD primates, which can more accurately model the neuropathology and motor impairments of human PD patients. Here, we show that oral administration of TP alleviates motor impairments and DAergic neuronal injury in the substantia nigra in N-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-intoxicated PD monkeys, indicating an association between protection against motor deficits and preservation of DAergic neurons. We also show a significant inhibition of MPTP-induced accumulation of neurotoxic α-synuclein (α-syn) oligomers in the striatum and other brain regions, which may contribute to the neuroprotection and improved motor function conferred by TP. The association between reduced α-syn oligomerization and neuroprotection was confirmed in cultured DAergic cells. The most abundant and bioactive TP in the mixture used in vivo, (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate, reduced intracellular levels of α-syn oligomers in neurons treated with α-syn oligomers, 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridiniumion, or both, accompanied by increased cell viability. The present study provides the first evidence that TP can alleviate motor impairments, DAergic neuronal injury, and α-syn aggregation in nonhuman primates.

RESUMO

AIMS: Studies suggest that type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with increased gut permeability. Human zonulin is the only physiological mediator discovered to date that is known to regulate gut permeability reversibly by disassembling intestinal tight junctions. However, the relationship between zonulin and type 2 diabetes remains to be defined, and no Chinese population-based data were reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between serum zonulin levels and type 2 diabetes in a Chinese Han population. METHODS: 143 newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients, 124 patients with impaired glucose tolerance and 121 subjects with normal glucose tolerance were enrolled in this study. Serum zonulin was measured by ELISA. RESULTS: Patients with type 2 diabetes had higher serum zonulin levels than impaired or normal glucose tolerant subjects. Serum zonulin correlated with body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, triglyceride, total cholesterol, HDL-C, fasting plasma glucose, 2h plasma glucose, HbA1c, tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin 6, HOMA-IR and QUICK index using correlation analysis (p < 0.05 for all). Multivariate stepwise regression analysis showed that zonulin levels were independently associated with insulin resistance (ß = 0.024, p = 0.005). In logistic regression analysis, zonulin levels were an independent predictor of type 2 diabetes (OR = 1.080, p = 0.037). CONCLUSIONS: Serum zonulin levels are significantly elevated in newly diagnosed Chinese Type 2 diabetes patients, and are associated with dyslipidemia, inflammation and insulin resistance, indicating a potential role of zonulin in the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes in Chinese.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Limited physiological data for Tibetan macaques are available at present. This study will provide more rationale for evaluating this species. METHODS: Thirty-seven Tibetan macaques (15 males and 22 females) were used in this study. Somatometric measurements, clinical chemistry and hematology parameters, insulin, and C-peptide were analyzed. RESULTS: Females had higher values of waist and waist hip ratio (WHR) than males in somatometric measurements. There were no significant differences between the two genders in hematology. Significant differences between males and females were only found for aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) in biochemistry testing. In addition, females had higher fasting insulin and C-peptide than males. There was a strongly positive correlation between age and some somatometric parameters. CONCLUSIONS: These physiological data will provide veterinarians and researchers with baseline values to evaluate experimental results using Tibetan macaques.
