RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Gender is an aspect of the natural identity of a person that has been given ample attention in socio-cultural, psychological, and political studies worldwide. Transgender, which is a part of gender issues, is still lacking in information on definitions of transgender, its causes, society's perceptions toward it, and interpretations on transgender action. Transgender is an umbrella term that describes people whose gender identity or expression does not match the sex they have been assigned at birth. It is one of the most important signs of progress produced by scientific advancement in the field of medicine, which is a relatively new phenomenon. Due to the lack of research on transgender, researchers study this issue at the theoretical and public opinion levels and from different perspectives. The objectives are to provide insights into the landscape of gender issues, instill awareness among communities and make them understand the psychological pains and the emotional difficulties that the transgender go through. Transgender issues must be analyzed from the perspectives of humanity, ethics, and culture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were gathered through open-ended interviews among nine participants. And to complement the data, particularly about the public's opinions toward the transgender, a focus group discussion (FGD) was held among four participants. RESULTS: The findings indicate that the transgender community often faces social discrimination due to the social stigma towards them. Thus, the treatment should be more on psychological therapies, family education, community awareness, and social activism that are needed to realign the transgender to the right track. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides insights into the landscape of gender equality and ways to support those with gender identity issues. Hence, this research carries values to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in enhancing the policy on gender equality.

RESUMO

A high sensitivity and simple ethanol sensor based on an un-cladded multimode plastic optical fiber (UCPOF) coated with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for the detection of different concentrations of ethanol in de-ionized water is developed and demonstrated. The UCPOF probe is fabricated by chemically removing the fiber cladding and integrated with CNT as a sensing layer. The effect of surface morphology on the sensor performance is investigated by characterizing another UCPOF coated with GO nanomaterial. The developed fibers are coated with CNTs and GO using drop casting technique. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), atomic-force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) are used to investigate the element and morphology of the synthesized nanomaterials. The experimental results indicated that the absorbance spectrum of the CNT-based UCPOF sensor increases linearly with a higher sensitivity of 0.68/vol% and magnitude change of 95.4% as compared to 0.19/vol% and 56.3%, respectively, for the GO-based sensor. The UCPOF coated with CNT exhibits faster response and recovery than that of GO. The sensor shows high selectivity to ethanol amongst a range of diluted organic VOCs. The superior sensing performance of the developed fiber sensor indicates its high efficiency for ethanol detection in various industrial applications.

RESUMO

Dengue Virus (DENV) has become one of the most serious arthropod-borne viral diseases, causing death globally. The existing methods for DENV detection suffer from the late stage treatment due to antibodies-based detection which is feasible only after five days following the onset of the illness. Here, we demonstrated the highly effective molecular electronic based detection utilizing silicon nanowire (SiNW) integrated with standard complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) process as a sensing device for detecting deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) related to DENV in an early stage diagnosis. To transform the fabricated devices as a functional sensing element, three-step procedure consist of SiNW surface modification, DNA immobilization and DNA hybridization were employed. The detection principle works by detecting the changes in current of SiNW which bridge the source and drain terminal to sense the immobilization of probe DNA and their hybridization with target DNA. The oxygen (O2) plasma was proposed as an effective strategy for increasing the binding amounts of target DNA by modified the SiNW surface. It was found that the detection limit of the optimized O2 plasma treated-SiNW device could be reduced to 1.985 × 10-14 M with a linear detection range of the sequence-specific DNA from 1.0 × 10-9 M to 1.0 × 10-13 M. In addition, the developed biosensor device was able to discriminate between complementary, single mismatch and non-complementary DNA sequences. This highly sensitive assay was then applied to the detection of reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) product of DENV-DNA, making it as a potential method for disease diagnosis through electrical biosensor.

RESUMO

The effective removal of o-cresol is currently both an environmental and economic challenge. ZnO is not only an efficient photocatalyst but is also cost effective, as its photoabsorption can extend from the ultraviolet (UV) to the visible range thereby allowing the use of inexpensive visible light sources, such as sunlight. The principal objective of the present work is to investigate the visible light-driven removal of o-cresol from aqueous solution in the presence of 1.0 wt% Mn-doped ZnO. To measure the efficiency ofphotodegradation, the variables studied included the amount ofphotocatalyst, concentration of o-cresol, pH and irradiation time. The concentration ofo-cresol and residual organic carbon was monitored using a UV-visible spectrophotometer, ultra high-pressure liquid chromatography and a total organic carbon analyser. The optimum conditions under which the photodegradation of o-cresol was most favourable corresponded to 1.5 g/l ZnO, 35 ppm o-cresol and pH 9. The ZnO-1 wt% Mn photoprocess has demonstrated reusability for more than three times, which warrants its scale-up from laboratory- to in industrial-scale application.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Prior to the development of a healthy ageing and risk reduction of chronic diseases intervention package for older people in Malaysia, a need assessment study was conducted to identify nutritional knowledge status and information needs, as part of an action research process. DESIGN: A cross sectional study was conducted among 267 elderly people, 54 care givers and 66 health professionals in two rural areas of Peninsular of Malaysia (i.e Sabak Bernam, Selangor and Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan). Information on nutritional knowledge was obtained from an interview based questionnaire for older subjects and caregiver and through self administered questionnaire from the health professionals. Anthropometric and functional measurements were also conducted among elderly subjects. RESULTS: It was found that the elderly subjects had poor nutritional knowledge with 43.8% of them classified as having unsatisfactory nutritional knowledge, followed by moderately satisfactory (33.7%), very unsatisfactory (15.7%) and good (6.7%). Talks, counselling sessions with health professionals and electronic media such as television and radio were the most preferred nutrition education sources among elderly subjects and their care givers. The majority of health professionals studied (98.5%) had good nutritional knowledge. Although most of them (93.6%) were involved in management of the elderly, only 45.5% incorporated nutritional information component in this activity. Most of the health professionals used the guidelines for management of elderly patients (63.6%). However, nutritional knowledge was very minimal in these guidelines. Multiple regression analysis indicated that 'level education', involvement in 'social activities', presence of 'hearing problems', the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) score, having previous 'nutritional information' and 'participation in healthy eating programme' were the major predictors of nutritional knowledge score among elderly subjects. CONCLUSION: Based on the above findings it is thus, imperative that an appropriate nutritional intervention package and programme be developed so as to help improve nutritional knowledge and subsequently the nutritional status of the rural elderly Malays.
