Objectives: To investigate the value of interpretable machine learning model and nomogram based on clinical factors, MRI imaging features, and radiomic features to predict Ki-67 expression in primary central nervous system lymphomas (PCNSL). Materials and methods: MRI images and clinical information of 92 PCNSL patients were retrospectively collected, which were divided into 53 cases in the training set and 39 cases in the external validation set according to different medical centers. A 3D brain tumor segmentation model was trained based on nnU-NetV2, and two prediction models, interpretable Random Forest (RF) incorporating the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) method and nomogram based on multivariate logistic regression, were proposed for the task of Ki-67 expression status prediction. Results: The mean dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) score of the 3D segmentation model on the validation set was 0.85. On the Ki-67 expression prediction task, the AUC of the interpretable RF model on the validation set was 0.84 (95% CI:0.81, 0.86; p < 0.001), which was a 3% improvement compared to the AUC of the nomogram. The Delong test showed that the z statistic for the difference between the two models was 1.901, corresponding to a p value of 0.057. In addition, SHAP analysis showed that the Rad-Score made a significant contribution to the model decision. Conclusion: In this study, we developed a 3D brain tumor segmentation model and used an interpretable machine learning model and nomogram for preoperative prediction of Ki-67 expression status in PCNSL patients, which improved the prediction of this medical task. Clinical relevance statement: Ki-67 represents the degree of active cell proliferation and is an important prognostic parameter associated with clinical outcomes. Non-invasive and accurate prediction of Ki-67 expression level preoperatively plays an important role in targeting treatment selection and patient stratification management for PCNSL thereby improving prognosis.

OBJECTIVES: To develop and validate a novel interpretable artificial intelligence (AI) model that integrates radiomic features, deep learning features, and imaging features at multiple semantic levels to predict the prognosis of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) patients at 6 months post-onset. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospectively enrolled 222 patients with ICH for Non-contrast Computed Tomography (NCCT) images and clinical data, who were divided into a training cohort (n = 186, medical center 1) and an external testing cohort (n = 36, medical center 2). Following image preprocessing, the entire hematoma region was segmented by two radiologists as the volume of interest (VOI). Pyradiomics algorithm library was utilized to extract 1762 radiomics features, while a deep convolutional neural network (EfficientnetV2-L) was employed to extract 1000 deep learning features. Additionally, radiologists evaluated imaging features. Based on the three different modalities of features mentioned above, the Random Forest (RF) model was trained, resulting in three models (Radiomics Model, Radiomics-Clinical Model, and DL-Radiomics-Clinical Model). The performance and clinical utility of the models were assessed using the Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (AUC), calibration curve, and Decision Curve Analysis (DCA), with AUC compared using the DeLong test. Furthermore, this study employs three methods, Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP), Grad-CAM, and Guided Grad-CAM, to conduct a multidimensional interpretability analysis of model decisions. RESULTS: The Radiomics-Clinical Model and DL-Radiomics-Clinical Model exhibited relatively good predictive performance, with an AUC of 0.86 [95% Confidence Intervals (CI): 0.71, 0.95; P < 0.01] and 0.89 (95% CI: 0.74, 0.97; P < 0.01), respectively, in the external testing cohort. CONCLUSION: The multimodal explainable AI model proposed in this study can accurately predict the prognosis of ICH. Interpretability methods such as SHAP, Grad-CAM, and Guided Grad-Cam partially address the interpretability limitations of AI models. Integrating multimodal imaging features can effectively improve the performance of the model. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Predicting the prognosis of patients with ICH is a key objective in emergency care. Accurate and efficient prognostic tools can effectively prevent, manage, and monitor adverse events in ICH patients, maximizing treatment outcomes.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the role and mechanism of microtubule-associated protein light chain-3 (LC3)-associated phagocytosis (LAP) in the immune response to Aspergillus fumigatus (A. fumigatus) keratitis. Methods: The formation of single-membrane phagosomes was visualized in the corneas of healthy or A. fumigatus-infected humans and C57BL/6 mice using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Rubicon siRNA (si-Rubicon) was used to block Rubicon expression. RAW 264.7 cells or mice corneas were infected with A. fumigatus with or without pretreatment of si-Rubicon and scrambled siRNA. RAW 264.7 cells were pretreated with Dectin-1 antibody or Dectin-1 overexpressed plasmid and then stimulated with A. fumigatus. Flow cytometry was used to label macrophages in normal and infected corneas of mice. In mice with A. fumigatus keratitis, the severity of the disease was assessed using clinical scores. We used lentiviral technology to transfer GV348-Ubi-GFP-LC3-II-SV40-Puro Lentivirus into the mouse cornea. The GFP-LC3 fusion protein was visualized in corneal slices using a fluorescence microscope. We detected the mRNA and protein expressions of the inflammatory factors IL-6, IL-1ß, and IL-10 using real-time PCR (RT-PCR) and ELISA. We detected the expression of LAP-related proteins Rubicon, ATG-7, Beclin-1, and LC3-II using Western blot or immunofluorescence. Results: Accumulation of single-membrane phagosomes within macrophages was observed in the corneas of patients and mice with A. fumigatus keratitis using TEM. Flow cytometry (FCM) analysis results show that the number of macrophages in the cornea of mice significantly increases after infection with A. fumigatus. LAP-related proteins were significantly elevated in the corneas of mice and RAW 264.7 cells after infection with A. fumigatus. The si-Rubicon treatment elevated the clinical score of mice. In A. fumigatus keratitis mice, the si-Rubicon treated group showed significantly higher expression of IL-6 and IL-1ß and lower expression of IL-10 and LC3-II compared to the control group. In RAW 264.7 cells, treatment with the Dectin-1 overexpressed plasmid upregulated the expression of LAP-related proteins, a process that was significantly inhibited by the Dectin-1 antibody. Conclusions: LAP participates in the anti-inflammatory immune process of fungal keratitis (FK) and exerts an anti-inflammatory effect. LAP is regulated through the Dectin-1 signaling pathway in A. fumigatus keratitis.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the clinical implication of quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based high-sensitivity detection of hepatitis B virus (HBV)-DNA levels in patients with HBV-related liver cirrhosis (LC). METHODS: From January 2020 to December 2022, 100 fasting serum samples were collected and retrospectively analyzed from patients with treated HBV-related LC attending the Suzhou Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine and Suzhou Guangci Cancer Hospital. Patients were divided into a negative group (HBV-DNA < 20 IU/mL) and a positive group (HBV-DNA ≥ 20 IU/mL) according to their high-sensitivity HBV-DNA test results. The clinical characteristics and serological indicators of the two groups were compared, mainly including gender, age, liver function [total protein (TP), albumin (ALB), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total bilirubin (TBIL), direct bilirubin (DBIL), and indirect bilirubin (IBIL)], lipids [total cholesterol (TC) and triglycerides (TG)], platelets (PLT), five serum liver fibrosis markers [cholyglycine (CG), hyaluronic acid (HA), laminin (LN), precollagen type III (PCIII), and type IV collagen (IV-C)], serum gastrointestinal tumor markers [α-fetoprotein (AFP) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA)], and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). The differences between the two groups in terms of liver function Child-Pugh grades and the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were also compared. RESULTS: There were 39 patients in the positive group, including 29 males and 10 females, and 61 patients in the negative group, including 38 males and 23 females, with no statistically significant differences in gender and age distribution between the two groups (P > 0.05). The levels of serological indicators (TP, ALB, AST, GGT, ALP, TBIL, DBIL, IBIL, TC, TG, PLT, CG, HA, LN, PCIII, IV-C, AFP, CEA, and HBsAg) in both groups showed no significant differences (P > 0.05), but the ALT level in the positive group was higher than that in the negative group (P < 0.0001). The positive group had worse Child-Pugh grades and higher HCC incidence compared to the negative group (P < 0.0001, P = 0.028). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with HBV-related LC and HBV-DNA ≥ 20 IU/mL have higher serum ALT levels, worse liver function Child-Pugh grades, and higher HCC incidence than those with HBV-DNA < 20 IU/mL. High-sensitivity HBV-DNA quantification can reflect the deterioration of liver function in patients with HBV-related LC to some extent.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlations between the expressions of proto-oncogenes C-myc and B-cell-specific Moloney leukemia virus integration site-1 (BMI-1), vaginal microecology, and human papillomavirus-DNA (HPV-DNA) load in patients with different cervical lesions. METHODS: A total of 51 patients with cervix squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC), 72 patients with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and 50 patients with normal cervix (NC) who were diagnosed or admitted between Jan. 1st 2020 and Dec. 31st 2022 at the Suzhou Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine were selected and divided into three groups, i.e., the CSCC group, the CIN group and the NC group, for a retrospective analysis. Hybrid capture 2 (hc2) was used to detect the HPV-DNA load in each group. Immunohistochemistry was performed to detect C-myc and BMI-1 expressions in each group. The indicators of vaginal microecology in patients were compared among groups to analyze the correlations between C-myc, BMI-1 expressions, vaginal microecology and HPV-DNA load. RESULTS: The HPV-DNA load and expression levels of positive C-myc and BMI-1 in the CSCC group were all higher than those of the CIN and NC groups (P<0.05). The detection rate of lactobacillus in the CSCC group was lower than that of the CIN and NC groups. The percentages of leukocyte esterase (LE) positivity and pH ≥4.6 were higher in the CSCC group than those in the CIN and NC groups (P<0.05). The difference in the detection rate of spores among the three groups was not significant (P>0.05). Both C-myc and BMI-1 scores were positively correlated with HPV-DNA load in the 173 samples. CONCLUSION: The proto-oncogenes C-myc and BMI-1 were highly expressed in the cervical tissues of CIN and CSCC patients, whose vaginal microecology was also altered. Both may play an important role in the progression of cervical lesions.

Rosai-Dorfman-Destombes disease (RDD) is a rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) disorder characterized by systemic extranodal lesions. Common cases include skin lesions, whereas liver lesions are rare. This study presents a case of a 66-year-old woman with a solitary extranodal liver lesion who underwent successful surgical treatment followed by glucocorticoid therapy. The patient did not experience any symptoms before surgery. The liver lesion was incidentally discovered during a routine ultrasound examination. Enhanced CT scan revealed the lesion with the characteristic of washout, similar to primary hepatic cancer (HCC). CT scans of the head, neck, chest, and abdominal pelvis revealed no lymph node or other organ lesions. After surgery, the liver lesion was diagnosed as RDD, and subsequent whole-body examinations did not reveal any skin lesions. The definitive diagnosis was solid liver RDD in adults. Although there were no typical cases of bilateral cervical lymph node lesions, ultrasound and CT examinations promptly detected liver lesions, leading to the correct diagnosis through surgical resection. The findings from this case indicate that RDD can occur in rare extrasegmental areas, and the imaging characteristics of liver lesions are not specific, indicating the importance of avoiding delayed diagnosis.

Grazing exclusion (GE), as an effective strategy for revitalizing degraded grasslands, possesses the potential to increase ecosystem respiration (Re) and significantly influence the capacity of grassland soils to sequester carbon. However, our current grasp of Re dynamics in response to varying durations of GE, particularly in the context of precipitation fluctuations, remains incomplete. To fill this knowledge gap, we conducted a monitoring of Re over a 40-year GE chronosequence within Inner Mongolia temperate typical steppe across two distinct hydrologically years. Overall, Re exhibited a gradual saturation curve and an increasing trend with the duration of GE in the wet year of 2021 and the normal precipitation year of 2022, respectively. The variance primarily stemmed from relatively higher microbial biomass carbon observed in the short-term GE during 2022 in contrast to 2021. Moreover, the impacts of GE on the sensitivities of Re to moisture and temperature were intricately tied to precipitation patterns. increasing significantly with prolonged GE duration in 2022 but not in 2021. Our study highlights the intricate interplay between GE duration, precipitation variability, and Re dynamics. This deeper understanding enhances our ability to predict and manage carbon cycling within typical steppe in Inner Mongolia, offering invaluable insights for effective restoration strategies and climate change mitigation.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a disease syndrome characterized by chronic hyperglycaemia. A long-term high-glucose environment leads to reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and nuclear DNA damage. Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell (HUcMSC) infusion induces significant antidiabetic effects in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) rats. Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) receptor (IGF1R) is important in promoting glucose metabolism in diabetes; however, the mechanism by which HUcMSC can treat diabetes through IGF1R and DNA damage repair remains unclear. In this study, a DM rat model was induced with high-fat diet feeding and streptozotocin (STZ) administration and rats were infused four times with HUcMSC. Blood glucose, interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-10, glomerular basement membrane, and renal function were examined. Proteins that interacted with IGF1R were determined through coimmunoprecipitation assays. The expression of IGF1R, phosphorylated checkpoint kinase 2 (p-CHK2), and phosphorylated protein 53 (p-p53) was examined using immunohistochemistry (IHC) and western blot analysis. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to determine the serum levels of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG). Flow cytometry experiments were used to detect the surface markers of HUcMSC. The identification of the morphology and phenotype of HUcMSC was performed by way of oil red "O" staining and Alizarin red staining. DM rats exhibited abnormal blood glucose and IL-6/10 levels and renal function changes in the glomerular basement membrane, increased the expression of IGF1 and IGF1R. IGF1R interacted with CHK2, and the expression of p-CHK2 was significantly decreased in IGF1R-knockdown cells. When cisplatin was used to induce DNA damage, the expression of p-CHK2 was higher than that in the IGF1R-knockdown group without cisplatin treatment. HUcMSC infusion ameliorated abnormalities and preserved kidney structure and function in DM rats. The expression of IGF1, IGF1R, p-CHK2, and p-p53, and the level of 8-OHdG in the DM group increased significantly compared with those in the control group, and decreased after HUcMSC treatment. Our results suggested that IGF1R could interact with CHK2 and mediate DNA damage. HUcMSC infusion protected against kidney injury in DM rats. The underlying mechanisms may include HUcMSC-mediated enhancement of diabetes treatment via the IGF1R-CHK2-p53 signalling pathway.

The aggressive nature of lung cancer is frequently accompanied by a high incidence of bone metastasis; however, proximal femoral metastasis from lung cancer is comparatively uncommon when compared to other malignancies. In this report, we present the case of a 53-year-old Asian male who presented with pain in the left thigh and back. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed severe bone destruction with involvement of adjacent soft tissue mass at the left thigh, exhibiting imaging findings that mimic osteosarcoma. Subsequent bone biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutated lung adenocarcinoma with bone metastasis. The patient achieved survival following administration of osimertinib and underwent surgery for femoral metastases without palliative surgery for lung cancer. Therefore, proximal femoral metastasis from EGFR-mutated lung adenocarcinoma should be considered as a differential diagnosis in patients suspected to have osteosarcoma. The imaging findings of proximal femoral metastasis from EGFR-mutated lung adenocarcinoma were presented, and their therapeutic management was discussed.

Background: Aurora kinase A (AURKA) is a potent oncogene that is often aberrantly expressed during tumorigenesis, and is associated with chemo-resistance in various malignancies. However, the role of AURKA in chemo-resistance remains largely elusive. Methods: The cleavage of AURKA upon viral infection or apoptosis stimuli was assesed by immunoblotting assays in several cancer cells or caspase deficient cell line models. The effect of AURKA cleavage at Asp132 on mitosis was explored by live cell imaging and immunofluorescence staining experiments. The role of Asp132-cleavage of AURKA induced by the chemotherapy drug paclitaxel was investigated using TUNEL, immunohistochemistry assay in mouse tumor xenograft model and patient tissues. Results: The proteolytic cleavage of AURKA at Asp132 commonly occurs in several cancer cell types, regardless of viral infection or apoptosis stimuli. Mechanistically, caspase 3/7/8 cleave AURKA at Asp132, and the Asp132-cleaved forms of AURKA promote cell apoptosis by disrupting centrosome formation and bipolar spindle assembly in metaphase during mitosis. The AURKAD132A mutation blocks the expression of cleaved caspase 3 and EGR1, which leads to reduced therapeutic effects of paclitaxel on colony formation and malignant growth of tumor cells in vitro and in vivo using a murine xenograft model and cancer patients. Conclusions: This study reveals that caspase-mediated AURKAD132 proteolysis is essential for paclitaxel to elicit cell apoptosis and indicates that AURKAD132 is a potential key target for chemotherapy.

The effective separation of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons remains a notable challenge in the petrochemical industry. Herein, we report a self-healing three-dimensional B ← N-based hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF), BN-HOF-1, constructed from discrete B ← N inclusive dimers through weak C-H···F and C-H···N hydrogen-bonding interactions. To make use of the specific recognition of the B ← N inclusive dimers for the toluene molecules and the reversible ad/desorption nature of this novel HOF, BN-HOF-1 can exclusively recognize and separate toluene from the mixtures of toluene-methylcyclohexane, thus generating 99.6% pure toluene from its mixtures after gentle heating, the recorded value among any reported materials for toluene purification. After the toluene molecules were released from the framework, it becomes the condensed BN-HOF-1a, which can be further reused for the highly selective recognition and purification of toluene from its binary mixtures, through the reversible structural recovery back to BN-HOF-1. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and molecular modeling studies reveal that the high specific toluene recognition is attributed to the complementary electrostatic potential between the host B ← N inclusive dimers and the guest toluene, while the self-healing and recovery nature of this HOF is attributed to weak intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions.

Softness is a crucial criterion in assessing the comfort and usability of tissue paper. Flexible fibers contribute to the softness of the tissue paper by allowing the sheets to conform to the contours of the skin without feeling rough or abrasive. This study focuses on developing innovative CGG/APAM/PDA hydrogels with interpenetrating networks consisting of cationic guar gum, anionic polyacrylamide, and polydopamine for cellulase immobilization, aimed at improving bamboo fiber flexibility. Cellulase biomolecules are efficiently immobilized on CGG/APAM/PDA hydrogels through the Schiff base reaction. Immobilized cellulases have a wider pH applicability than free cellulases, good storage stability, and can maintain high relative activity at relatively high temperatures. The treatment of bamboo fibers with immobilized cellulase results in a significant increase in flexibility, reaching 6.90 × 1014 N·m2, which is 7.18 times higher than that of untreated fibers. The immobilization of cellulases using CGG/APAM/PDA hydrogels as carriers results in a substantial enhancement of storage stability, pH applicability, and inter-fiber bonding strength, as well as the capacity to sustain high relative enzymatic activity at elevated temperatures. The immobilization of cellulase within CGG/APAM/PDA interpenetrating network hydrogels presents a viable strategy for enhancing bamboo fiber flexibility, thereby expanding the accessibility of tissue products.

Zintl phases typically exhibit low lattice thermal conductivity, which are extensively investigated as promising thermoelectric candidates. While the significance of Zintl anionic frameworks in electronic transport properties is widely recognized, their roles in thermal transport properties have often been overlooked. This study delves into KCdSb as a representative case, where the [CdSb4/4]- tetrahedrons not only impact charge transfer but also phonon transport. The phonon velocity and mean free path, are heavily influenced by the bonding distance and strength of the Zintl anions Cd and Sb, considering the three acoustic branches arising from their vibrations. Furthermore, the weakly bound Zintl cation K exhibits localized vibration behaviors, resulting in strong coupling between the high-lying acoustic branch and the low-lying optical branch, further impeding phonon diffusion. The calculations reveal that grain boundaries also contribute to the low lattice thermal conductivity of KCdSb through medium-frequency phonon scattering. These combined factors create a glass-like thermal transport behavior, which is advantageous for improving the thermoelectric merit of zT. Notably, a maximum zT of 0.6 is achieved for K0.84Na0.16CdSb at 712 K. The study offers both intrinsic and extrinsic strategies for developing high-efficiency thermoelectric Zintl materials with extremely low lattice thermal conductivity.

In this work, we performed static density functional theory calculations and ab initio metadynamics simulations to systematically investigate the association mechanisms and dynamic structures of four kinds of ion pairs that could be formed before the nucleation of CaCO3. For Ca2+-HCO3- and Ca2+-CO32- pairs, the arrangement of ligands around Ca2+ evolves between the six-coordinated octahedral structure and the seven-coordinated pentagonal bipyramidal structure. The formation of ion pairs follows an associative ligand substitution mechanism. Compared with HCO3-, CO32- exhibits a stronger affinity to Ca2+, leading to the formation of a more stable precursor phase in the prenucleation stage, which promotes the subsequent CaCO3 nucleation. In alkaline environments, excessive OH- ions decrease the coordination preference of Ca2+. In this case, the formation of Ca(OH)+-CO32- and Ca(OH)2-CO32- pairs favors the dissociative ligand substitution mechanism. The inhibiting effects of OH- ion on the CaCO3 association can be interpreted from two aspects, i.e., (1) OH- neutralizes positive charges on Ca2+, decreases the electrostatic interactions between Ca2+ and CO32-, and thus hinders the formation of the CaCO3 monomer, and (2) OH- decreases the capacity of Ca2+ for accommodating O, making it easier to separate Ca2+ and CO32- ions. Our findings on the ion association behaviors in the initial stage of CaCO3 formation not only help scientists evaluate the impact of ocean acidification on biomineralization but also provide theoretical support for the discovery and development of more effective approaches to manage undesirable scaling issues.

BACKGROUND: The National Medical Licensing Examination (NMLE) is the only objective, standardized metric to evaluate whether a medical student possessing the professional knowledge and skills necessary to work as a physician. However, the overall pass rate of NMLE in our hospital in 2021 was much lower than that of Peking Union Medical College Hospital, which was required to be further improved. METHODS: To find the reasons for the unsatisfactory performance in 2021, the quality improvement team (QIT) organized regular face-to-face meetings for in-depth discussion and questionnaire, and analyzed the data by "Plato analysis" and "Brainstorming method". After finding out the reasons, the "Plan-Do-Check-Action" (PDCA) cycle was continued to identify and solve problems, which included the formulation and implementation of specific training plans by creating the "Gantt charts", the check of effects, and continuous improvements from 2021 to 2022. Detailed information about the performance of students in 2021 and 2022, and the attendance, assessment, evaluation and suggestions from our hospital were provided by the relevant departments, and the pass rate-associated data was collected online. RESULTS: After the PDCA plan, the pass rate of NMLE in our hospital increased by 10.89% from 80.15% in 2021 to 91.04% in 2022 (P = 0.0109), with the pass rate of skill examination from 95.59% in 2021 to 99.25% in 2022 (P = 0.0581) and theoretical examination from 84.5% in 2021 to 93.13% in 2022 (P = 0.027). Additionally, the mean scores of all examinees increased with the theoretical examination score increasing from 377.0 ± 98.76 in 2021 to 407.6 ± 71.94 in 2022 (P = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: Our results showed a success application of the PDCA plan in our hospital which improved the pass rate of the NMLE in 2022, and the PDCA plan may provide a practical framework for future medical education and further improve the pass rate of NMLE in the next year.

RESUMO

The ongoing evolution of two-dimensional (2D) material-based membranes has prompted the realization of mass separations at the 1-nm scale due to their well-defined selective nano- and subnanochannels. Strategic membrane functionalization is further found to be key to augmenting channel accuracy and efficiency in distinguishing ions, gases and molecules within this range and is thus trending as a research focus in energy-, resource-, environment- and pharmaceutical-related applications. In this review, we present the fundamentals underpinning functionalized 2D membranes in various separations, elucidating the critical "method-interaction-property" relationship. Starting with an introduction to various functionalization strategies, we focus our discussion on functionalization-induced channel-species interactions and reveal how they shape the transport- and operation-related features of the membrane in different scenarios. We also highlight the limitations and challenges of current functionalized 2D membranes and outline the necessary breakthroughs needed to apply them as reliable and high-performance separation units across industries in the future.

As worldwide plastic pollution continues to rise, innovative ideas for effective reuse and recycling of waste plastic are needed. Single-atom catalysts (SACs), which are known for their high activity and selectivity, present unique advantages in facilitating plastic degradation and conversion. Waste plastic can be used as a support or raw material to create SACs, which reduces waste generation while simultaneously utilizing waste as a resource. This work successfully utilized waste plastic polyurethane (PU) as a support, through a unique Rapid Thermal Processing Reactor (RTPR) to synthesize an efficient Pd1/PU SACs. At 25 °C and 0.5 MPa H2, Pd1/PU displayed outstanding activity and selectivity in the hydrogenation of styrene, as well as remarkable stability. Pd1/PU performed well in hydrogenating a variety of common substrates. These findings highlight the great potential of SACs in plastic waste reuse and recycling, offering intriguing solutions to the global plastic pollution problem.

The non-equilibrium solidification process in the additive manufacturing of titanium alloy leads to special microstructures, and the resulting changes in corrosion behavior are worthy of attention. In this paper, the microstructure and electrochemical corrosion behavior of Ti6Al4V alloys prepared using laser powder bed melting (LPBF) and casting are systematically compared. The results show that the LPBF-processed Ti6Al4V alloy is composed of dominant acicular α' martensite within columnar prior ß phase, and less ß disperses have also been discovered, which is significantly different from the α + ß dual-phase structure of cast Ti6Al4V alloy. Compared to the as-cast Ti6Al4V alloy, LPBF-processed Ti6Al4V alloy has a thinner and unstable passive film, and exhibits slightly poorer corrosion resistance, which is mainly related to its higher porosity, a large amount of acicular α' martensite and less ß phase compared to as-cast Ti6Al4V alloy. This result proves that suitable methods should be taken to control the relative density and phase composition of LPBF-processed Ti6Al4V alloys before application.

Lutein is an oxygenated fat-soluble carotenoid and a functional compound with proven health benefits for the human body. Nevertheless, the poor water solubility and low oral bioavailability of lutein greatly limit its application. To address this, we developed an effective approach to enhance the water solubility of lutein through co-amorphous formulation. Specifically, the lutein-sucralose co-amorphous mixture was prepared at a molar ratio of 1:1 using ethanol and water as solvents by employing the solvent evaporation method, followed by solid-state characterization and dissolution testing conducted to assess the properties of the formulation. The X-ray diffraction pattern with an amorphous halo and the differential scanning calorimetry thermogram with no sharp melting peaks confirmed the formation of a binary co-amorphous system. Changes in peak shape, position, and intensity observed in the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectrum revealed intermolecular interactions between lutein and sucralose molecules, while molecular dynamics simulations identified interaction sites between their hydroxyl groups. Additionally, dissolution testing demonstrated better dissolution performance of lutein in the co-amorphous form compared to pure lutein and physical mixture counterparts. Our findings present a novel strategy for improving the water solubility of lutein to make better use of it.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate alterations of whole-brain network after stroke and therapeutic mechanisms of robot-assisted gait training (RAGT). METHODS: 21 stroke patients and 20 healthy subjects were enrolled, with the stroke patients randomized to either control group (n = 11) or robot group (n = 10), and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected. The global network metrics were obtained using graph theory analysis and compared between stroke patients and healthy subjects, and the effect of the RAGT on the whole-brain networks was explored. RESULTS: Compared to healthy subjects, area under the curve (AUC) for small-worldness (σ), clustering coefficient (Cp), global efficiency (Eg) and mean local efficiency (Eloc) were significantly lower in stroke patients, whereas AUC for characteristic path length (Lp) were significantly higher. Compared with the control group, patients in robot group showed significant improvement in lower limb motor function, balance function and walking function after intervention, with a significant reduction in the AUC of Cp. Moreover, the improvement of walking function was positively correlated with the changes of AUC of σ and Eg, and negatively correlated with the changes of AUC of Cp. CONCLUSIONS: Small-worldness and network efficiency were significantly reduced after stroke, whereas RAGT decreased characteristic path length and promoted normalization of the whole-brain network, and this change was associated with improvement in walking function. Our findings reveal the mechanism by which RAGT regulates network reorganization and neuroplasticity after stroke.
