RESUMO

In the years 1999-2000, there was an increase in the incidence of meningococcal disease in Victoria, largely caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C. This change was associated with a shift in age distribution of cases, with relatively more disease appearing in the 15-29 year age group, and with 40/58 serogroup C isolates in 2000 exhibiting a new macrorestriction pattern (pattern A). Thirty-four of 52 pattern A isolates tested displayed the novel phenotype C:2a:P1.4, and were consistently porA VR type P1.7-2,4 by DNA sequencing. Nine of 10 representative pattern A isolates analysed displayed a housekeeping gene allele profile (ST-11) that is characteristic of the electrophoretic type (ET)-15 variant that has caused outbreaks in Canada, the Czech Republic and Greece. Meningococci belonging to the ST-11 complex that were isolated in Victoria prior to 1999 did not display either restriction pattern A or PorA VR type P1.7-2,4.

RESUMO

It is well known that most physiological functions change with aging, including the immune response. Data concerning the aging of lymphocyte subpopulations are conflicting. The antigen density of peripheral blood lymphocytes has been determined by fluorescently tagged OKT-3, OKT-4, OKT-8, OKT-11 and OKM1 monoclonal antibodies in a carefully selected aged (over 87 years) population, and compared to that of young subjects. A substantial difference was found in the percentage distribution of OKT8 and OKM1 subsets. The volume of lymphocytes of the elderly population was significantly less than that of the young. The effect of various monoclonal antibodies on phosphatidylinositol breakdown has also been studied. It was found that only OKT3, acting through the CD3 antigen receptor, was able to induce inositol phosphate formation in both young and elderly, although in the latter population this occurred at a lower level. Because the plasma membrane plays a regulatory role in this process, an important and sensitive functional parameter, the membrane potential, was also monitored and influenced by changing the extracellular K+ concentration. The lymphocytes of the elderly population responded less sensitively to changes in extracellular potassium concentration.

RESUMO

In the present study we observed the absolute number of NK cells and the NK activity in 10 patients with cervical cancer. NK activity was determined before and after stimulation with Active Lipids. We reported a significant decrease of basal NK activity, but after AL stimulation NK activity was increased with statistical significance. Therefore our findings show that the reduction of NK activity in neoplastic patients is not an irreversible phenomenon since it can be restored by "in vitro" AL administration. This is important for the adoptive immunotherapy by which we could give LAK cells to the patients.

RESUMO

Respiratory infections are particularly frequent in aged subjects and cause severe and often inauspicious complications) such as compromised cell-mediated immunity. Preliminary data suggest thymopentin treatment in a population of elderly subjects affected by relapses of bronchial disease. The effects of the therapy are adequately monitored controlling immunologic parameters.
