RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the sensitivity of various diagnostic methods in the optic neuritis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 15 patients, 10 boys and 5 girls, aged 6-18 years, with optic neuritis have been examined. Multiple sclerosis was diagnosed in 12 cases, the etiology of 3 was unknown. The full ophthalmological examination, including static perimetry and visual evoked potentials (VEP) as well as brain computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were performed. RESULTS: MRI revealed plaques of demyelination in 11 patients; no pathological changes were observed in cases of idiopathic neuritis. In CT plaques of demyelination were found in 2 patients only. In most cases VEPs were abnormal, mainly there was prolonged latency of deflection, decreased amplitude and more rarely changes of the shape of the record. Static perimetry, with white and blue target, revealed multiple scattered absolute and relative scotoma in the 30 degrees central area. CONCLUSIONS: MRI and static perimetry were the most sensitive methods for detection of the changes in optic neuritis and these methods are also useful in cases with asymptomatic involvement of visual pathway, especially in multiple sclerosis.

RESUMO

Mumps belongs to children viral diseases. However, it rather seldom has general complications, either of internal organs or of the central nervous system. The authors present a case of a 10-year-old girl who two weeks after an uncomplicated mumps had bilateral optic nerve neuropathy. Her visual acuity was low and visual fields were constricted. The symptoms disappeared after 8 days without any treatment. But because of a possibility of optic neuritis the girl was treated with oral steroids. She is still observed in our clinic and still shows pathological changes in static computer perimetry.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To compare diagnostic efficiency of USG and MR in orbital diseases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The clinical material comprised 25 cases of various orbital changes, mostly tumor-like, examined between January 1994 and March 1995 using USG and MR. The value of both methods was compared as well as the results of histopathological studies performed in 15 eyes. Four selected cases are presented in details. RESULTS: In most cases proper diagnosis was state basing both on USG and MR examinations. In 2 cases of USG examination and in 2 of MR misdiagnosis was state as compared with histopathological results. In small tumors and those localised in the anterior part or apex of the orbit MR gives better images. CONCLUSION: USG and MR are complementary diagnostic methods of orbital soft tissue changes, very efficient if made by an experienced examiner.

RESUMO

The aim of this paper is to elaborate an ultrasound method for the examination of anterior segment of the eye with use of standard B-scan 10 MHz ultrasonography. Usefulness of this method was estimated in crystalline lens pathology. Own designed "upside down funnel" made of plastic enabled immersion eye examination 38 eyes with senile cataract and traumatic cataract were diagnosed. It was proved that the described method makes possible to estimate different lens pathology. It is especially recommended to examine posterior lens capsule and to avoid possible complication during surgery. The method makes it possible to undertake optimal decision before surgery.

RESUMO

20 eyes filled with silicone oil were examined clinically and with ultrasonography. Both examinations were performed by two independent groups of investigators. The results were compared according to the extent of retinal detachment and its features. The authors discussed the reasons of differences between the two methods. The common difficulties to interpret USG pictures of silicon oil filled eyes are discussed.

RESUMO

The aim of the paper was to establish the methods which allow to diagnose optic disc drusen and to differentiate them from other diseases with similar clinical picture. 10 patients with diagnosis or suspicion of optic disc drusen were examined. The results suggest that usefulness of ultrasonography, fluorescein angiography and static perimetry.

RESUMO

In 1992, 20 eyes with retinal detachment and PVR D1-D3 were treated. In 18 of them ultrasonography was performed mainly in the eyes with opaque media. Based on selected examples, the authors indicate the usefulness of B-scan ultrasonography in diagnosis of advanced stages of PVR.

RESUMO

Aim of the studies was to evaluate usefulness of the visual evoked potentials and static perimetry in diagnosis of an early glaucoma. There were 12 examined cases, divided into 3 equal groups: 1) patients suspected for glaucoma basing on the characteristic picture of the optic disc, 2) patients after acute glaucoma in one eye with no history of the disease in the fellow eye, 3) patients with open angle glaucoma diagnosed in one eye. Abnormal results of the examinations were found only in the second group. The authors concluded that visual evoked potentials and static perimetry could be helpful in proper diagnosis of many difficult cases suspected for glaucoma.
