RESUMO

On the basis of atomic absorption spectrophotometry rat teeth iron levels in glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis were measured. Hydrocortisone caused decreasing of the iron level in rat teeth after both 4 and 8 weeks of the duration of the experiment. The other drugs used in osteoporosis treatment (calcium and calcitonin) administered together with hydrocortisone or separately also influenced the content of this ion in rats' teeth.

RESUMO

The authors describe the case of a patient with posttraumatic carotid cavernous sinus fistula with a complex of low clinical syndromes. Attention was drawn to oligosymptomatic fistula causing diagnostic difficulties in maxillofacial surgery practice. The study presents diagnostic and treatment methods and their results.

RESUMO

In this paper we report cloning and experimental characterization of the DNA adenine methyltransferase (dam) gene from Haemophilus influenzae and comparison of its product with the Dam protein from the lysogenic phage of H. influenzae, HP1. Molecular modeling of M.HinDam and M.HP1Dam was carried out, providing a framework for a comparative analysis of these enzymes and their close homologs in the structural context. Both proteins share the common fold and essential cofactor-binding and catalytic residues despite overall divergence. However, subtle but significant differences in the cofactor-binding pocket have been identified. Moreover, while M.HinDam seems to contact its target DNA sequence using a number of loops, most of them are missing from M.HP1Dam. Analysis of both MTases suggests that their catalytic activity was derived from a common ancestor, but similar sequence specificities arose by convergence.

RESUMO

Small doses of melatonin were administrated to 30 patients with day/night rhythm disorders, after cerebral stroke. Psychotropic drugs administrated before did not bring any clinical improvement. In evaluation of melatonin the time till falling asleep, sleep duration, anxiety and the following day activity were taken into account. Good results were observed in majority of patients, concerning falling asleep and sleep were obtained continuity. The melatonin is a safe and worth drug in sleep rhythm disorders in patients after cerebral stroke.

RESUMO

Botulinum toxin type A is one of the seven serotype /A-G/ produced by the anerobic bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is one of the most potent toxins available. Botulinum toxin binds to the motor nerve end-plate and prevents acetylcholin release, causing presynaptic neuromuscular blockade. The toxin is being increasingly used in the treatment of several form of disorders characterized by excessive or inappropriate muscle contraction, including stroke, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis. Botulinum toxin type A has brought a new approach to the effective treatment of dystonias. It has demonstrated additional analgesic effect. Among recently describes applications are the treatment of tics, tremors, hyperhydrosis, myoclonus, etc.
