RESUMO

With the development of civilisation, the awareness of the impact of versatile aerosol particles on human health and the environment is growing. New advanced materials and techniques are needed to purify the air to reduce this impact. This brings the necessity of fast and low-cost devices to evaluate the air quality from particulate and gaseous impurities, especially in a place where gas chromatography (GC) techniques are unavailable. Small portable and low-cost systems may work separately or be incorporated into devices responsible for air-cleaning processes, such as filters, smoke adsorbers, or plasma air cleaners. Given the above, this study proposes utilising a self-assembled low-cost system to evaluate air quality, which can be used in many outdoor and indoor applications. ESP32 boards with the wireless communication protocol ESP-NOW were used as the framework of the system. The concentration of aerosol particles was measured using Alphasense sensors. The concentrations of the following gases were measured: NO2, SO2, O3, CO, CO2, and H2S. The system was used to evaluate the quality of air containing tobacco smoke after passing through an actual DBD plasma reactor where the purification occurred. A high amount of reduction in aerosol particles and a reduction in the SO2 concentration were detected. An increase in the NO2 concentration was seen as an undesirable effect. The aerosol particle measurements were compared with those using a professional device (GRIMM, Hamburg, Germany), which showed the same trends in aerosol particle behaviour. The obtained results are auspicious and are a step towards producing a low-cost, efficient system for evaluating air quality as well as indoor and outdoor conditions.

RESUMO

Static and dynamic methods can be used to assess the way a foot is loaded. The research question is how the pressure on the feet would vary depending on walking/running speed. This study involved 20 healthy volunteers. Dynamic measurement of foot pressure was performed using the Ortopiezometr at normal, slow, and fast paces of walking. Obtained data underwent analysis in a "Steps" program. Based on the median, the power generated by the sensors during the entire stride period is the highest during a fast walk, whereas based on the average; a walk or slow walk prevails. During a fast walk, the difference between the mean and the median of the stride period is the smallest. Regardless of the pace of gait, the energy released per unit time does not depend on the paces of the volunteers' gaits. Conclusions: Ortopiezometr is a feasible tool for the dynamic measurement of foot pressure. For investigations on walking motions, the plantar pressure analysis system, which uses the power generated on sensors installed in the insoles of shoes, is an alternative to force or energy measurements. Regardless of the pace of the walk, the amounts of pressure applied to the foot during step are similar among healthy volunteers.

RESUMO

Screen-printed sensing electrodes attract much attention for water pollution monitoring due to their small size, physical and chemical durability, and low cost. This paper presents the fabrication and broad potentiometric characterization of RuO2 pH sensing electrodes deposited by screen printing on alumina substrates and sintered in the 800-900 °C temperature range. All the fabricated electrodes showed close to Nernstian sensitivity, good linearity, fast response, small drift, low hysteresis, and low cross-sensitivity toward various interfering cations and anions. Furthermore, decreasing the sintering temperature led to better adhesion of the RuO2 layer and a negligible response to interfering ions. The measurements in real-life samples from different water sources showed that the fabricated electrodes are on par with conventional glass electrodes with a maximum deviation of 0.11 pH units, thus indicating their potential for application in water quality monitoring.

RESUMO

Following the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), airborne water droplets have been identified as the main transmission route. Identifying and breaking all viable transmission routes are critical to stop future outbreaks, and the potential of transmission by water has been highlighted. By modifying established approaches, we provide a method for the rapid assessment of the risk of transmission posed by fecally contaminated river water and give example results for 39 countries. The country relative risk of transmission posed by fecally contaminated river water is related to the environment and the populations' infection rate and water usage. On the basis of in vitro data and using temperature as the primary controller of survival, we then demonstrate how viral loads likely decrease after a spill. These methods using readily available data suggest that sewage spills into rivers within countries with high infection rates could provide infectious doses of >40 copies per 100 mL of water. The approach, implemented in the supplementary spreadsheet, can provide a fast estimate of the upper and lower viral load ranges following a riverine spill. The results enable evidence-based research recommendations for wastewater epidemiology and could be used to evaluate the significance of fecal-oral transmission within freshwater systems.

RESUMO

The paper reports on investigation of the pH sensing mechanism of thick film RuO2-Ta2O5 sensors by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Interdigitated conductimetric pH sensors were screen printed on alumina substrates. The microstructure and elemental composition of the films were examined by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The XPS studies revealed the presence of Ru ions at different oxidation states and the surface hydroxylation of the sensing layer increasing with increasing pH. The EIS analysis carried out in the frequency range 10 Hz-2 MHz showed that the electrical parameters of the sensitive electrodes in the low frequency range were distinctly dependent on pH. The charge transfer and ionic exchange occurring at metal oxide-solution interface were indicated as processes responsible for the sensing mechanism of thick film RuO2-Ta2O5 pH sensors.

RESUMO

The paper reports on the preparation, properties and application of potentiometric pH sensors with thick film RuO2-Ta2O5 sensing electrode and Ag/AgCl/KCl reference electrode screen printed on an alumina substrate. Furthermore, it presents fabrication procedure and characterization of a new miniaturized pH sensor on LTCC (low temperature cofired ceramics) substrate, destined for wireless monitoring. The crystal structure, phase and elemental composition, and microstructure of the films were investigated by X-ray diffractometry, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Potentiometric characterization was performed in a wide pH range of 2-12 for different storage conditions and pH loops. The advantages of the proposed thick film pH sensors are: (a) low cost and easy fabrication, (b) excellent sensitivity close to the Nernstian response (56mV/pH) in the wide pH range, (c) fast response, (d) long lifetime, (e) good reproducibility, (f) low hysteresis and drift effects, and (g) low cross-sensitivity towards Li(+), Na(+) and K(+) as interfering ions. The applicability of the sensors for pH measurement of river, tap and distilled water, and some drinks was also tested.

RESUMO

Vagus nerve as a part of brain-gut axis transmits peripheral information to the brain via vagovagal reflexes. Electric properties of the vagus are not exactly known. Analysis of electric changes in vagal nerves evoked by physiologic impulse such as stomach distention by food would facilitate applying better documented and therefore safer vagal neuromodulation. The aim of our study was analysis and interpretation of electric properties of the left vagus in vivo in fasted and satiated Wistar rats. Silver measuring electrodes connected to analog amplifier (A-M Systems 3000) were attached to the nerve in the neck region. The signal was filtered and probing by computer recording system (ADInstruments Power Lab) and additional analyses were performed using GNU Octave programme. Our resuts have shown that the higher amplitude the smaller number of counted impulses in the vagus was detected. This relationship was true only till the maximum level typical for each recording (about 15-20 dB). We note that observed inter spike interval can be approximated with log-normal distribution, and that its mu parameter is enough to characterize a particular recording. Satiated rats were characterized by higher number of spikes per second in the nerve than fasted ones (0.9 vs 0.26) indicating that food intake increased nervous activity 3-4 times comparing to fasted state. The outcomes encourage us to state that good quality characteristic of the left vagus nerve activity provides an effective tool for detection of peripheral signals which are transmitting via vagal afferents to the higher centres. Target vagal neuromodulation to obtain certain terapeutic effects may be possible.
