RESUMO

The parapharyngeal space, an area of complex anatomic relationships, is involved in a wide variety of benign and malignant neoplasms. This paper reported in managing 16 patients with parapharyngeal primary tumors. The cervical approach as surgical treatment was used in whole group. Recurrent tumors accounted for 4 of 16 cases. Discussion of the indications, surgical technique and select points to using this operative procedure is based on operative experience gained from these 16 patients.

RESUMO

A total of 213 patients with a foreign body in the oesophagus was treated in our unit between 1980-1990. Most of the foreign bodies were impacted in the cervical oesophagus. Oesophagoscopy were carried out under general anaesthesia in all cases. iatrogenic perforation of oesophagus was encountered in ten cases. Our results suggest that most instrumental perforation of the esophagus should be managed surgically. Drainage and closure of cervical perforations yields good results. Nonoperative management night be entertained in minimally symptomatic patients harboring a late, locally contained perforation without signs of ongoing sepsis.

RESUMO

The usage of external drainage in the treatment of chronic exudative otitis media raised as much hope as it did doubts. However this method was not put to common use immediately. The doubts observed by laryngological mele delayed the usage of this method of treatment in many cases. In the Otolaryngological Clinic of the Surgery Institute in Warsaw, the external drainage in chronic exudative otitis media has been in use for several years. The authors of this paper present their own distant observations upon treated patients. They evaluate the efficiency of hearing examination and the lack of recurrence of inflammation of the middle ear.

RESUMO

Affection of the elements of the lymphatic system in the cancer of the larynx or hypopharynx is making the prognosis worse. We know that this is the simplification of the problem. We are trying to find and define factors which have the main meaning in prognosis of the treatment and the survival of the treated patients. In order to attain this we analyse histopathological material and results of clinic observations.

RESUMO

Unsatisfactory results treatment of the hypopharyngeal and upper respiratory tract carcinoma lead us to investigations on the efficient diagnostic methods of keratinization disturbances. We used a method worked out earlier in our Clinic and based on cytologic examinations of Papanicolaou. In present series we performed cytologic examinations in patients from high-risk groups of the upper respiratory tract and hypopharyngeal cancer. In any doubt cytology was accompanied by histological examination. Our material judges the statement that cytological examination may be used as a screening method of examination in prophylaxis of hypopharyngeal cancer.

RESUMO

The results of the cytological evaluation of the nasal smears taken from the patients with non-seasonal atopic rhinitis were presented. In 95% of smears a very abundant cytological material of the columnar epithelium cells was found. The smears taken by cyto-brushing (Medscand) showed the presence of the cytological material from the whole nasal mucosa, while those taken by the loop contained the cells from the small area of the mucosa.

RESUMO

The authors of the article describe the case of a child surgically treated for inborn anomaly of the first branchial cleft. Basing upon this example, they discuss the difficulties that the surgeon may encounter during the operative treatment. Concluding, they present the characteristic features of this type of developmental anomaly.
