The wild cat (Felis silvestris), spread in Romania from the Danube Delta to the mountain range is present in the Banat area, on the hunting ground that can be contaminated with different stage developmental forms of parasites, some of them having real zoonotic potential. The wild cat is an animal protected by the Romanian law of protection animals. Coprological samples from 88 wild cats from 16 hunting grounds, as well as the gastrointestinal tract collected from six wild cats cadavers and the molecular characterization of the cestodes identified in their intestines, allowed us to establish intestinal parasitic fauna. During coprological examination Isospora oocysts, tapeworm eggs, eggs of Toxocara cati, Ancylostoma spp. and Capillaria spp were found. At the same time, the form of genera Mesocestoides, Taenia, Toxocara/Toxascaris and Ancylostoma were identified at necropsy. Further polymerase chain reaction (PCR) identification revealed the species of Taenia taenieformis, and Mesocestoides litteratus, the latter providing a zoonotic potential. This study, the first in the western part of the country (Banat area, Timis County), provides information about the parasitic fauna of wild cats and underlines the importance of the human contamination risk.

Giardia duodenalis is a worldwide occurring protozoan that can infect various mammalian hosts. While living conditions are getting closer between pet animals and owners, there is discussion whether dogs may contribute to the transmission of these pathogens to humans. The present study was conducted in order to identify the Giardia assemblages in dogs from South Eastern Europe. For this purpose, 1645 faecal samples of household and shelter dogs from Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Macedonia, Romania and Serbia were tested for Giardia coproantigen by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). A subset of 107 faecal samples demonstrating Giardia cysts by direct immunofluorescence assay (IFA) or microscopy (15-22 per country) plus 26 IFA-positive canine faecal samples from Croatia were used for DNA extraction and multilocus sequence typing with nested PCRs targeting five different gene loci: SSU rRNA, ITS1-5.8S-ITS2, beta giardin (bg), glutamate dehydrogenase (gdh) and triosephosphate isomerase (tpi). One third (33.7%) of the samples tested positive for Giardia antigen in the coproantigen ELISA. Shelter dogs were infected more frequently than household dogs (57.2 vs. 29.7%, p < 0.01). Amplification was obtained in 82.0, 12.8, 11.3, 1.5, and 31.6%, of the investigated samples at the SSU rRNA, bg, gdh and tpi loci and the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region, respectively. The dog-specific assemblages C and D were identified in 50 and 68 samples, respectively. The results demonstrate that G. duodenalis should be considered as a common parasite in dogs from South Eastern Europe. However, there was no evidence for zoonotic Giardia assemblages in the investigated canine subpopulation.

INTRODUCTION: Although several adverse effects of antidepressants on the gastrointestinal tract have been described (bleeding, constipation, dolichocolon), their influence on gallbladder motility was not investigated.The aim of our study was to investigate the effects of selected antidepressants on gallbladder emptying in patients with major depression. METHODS: The study was set up as an open clinical trial, with the same intervention (ingestion of test meal provoking gallbladder emptying) undertaken in 112 patients with major depression. There were 30 patients not taking antidepressants (the control group), 25 patients taking amitriptyline, 30 patients taking maprotiline, and 27 patients taking fluoxetine. The volume of gallbladder in the study patients was measured by ultrasonography before the test meal, and 15, 30, 45 and 60 min after the meal. RESULTS: 1 h after ingestion of the study meal, the amitriptyline group showed incomplete gallbladder emptying (F=10.829, df=3, p=0.000; mean residual volume 11.0±6.1 mL), while in the control, maprotiline and fluoxetine groups emptying of gallbladder was complete (mean residual volumes 5.0±3.3 mL, 5.6±3.7 mL and 5.7±2.3 mL, respectively). DISCUSSION: In patients with cholecystitis, it would be wise to use antidepressants which do not impair gallbladder emptying, like maprotiline or fluoxetine, and to avoid amitriptyline.

The promotion of tumor growth is due to a combination of several mechanisms, including angiogenesis and the abundance of cell-derived inflammatory cytokines. The aim of this study was to investigate the serum levels of interleukin 17 (IL-17) and the expression of p53 and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), in order to determine the relationship between these markers and serum IL-17 levels in patients with colorectal carcinoma. Serum levels of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-17 in patients with colorectal carcinoma (CRC) (n=40) and in a healthy group (n=37) were analysed by ELISA. Surgically resected specimens of 59 colorectal carcinomas were studied by immunohistochemical staining for VEGF and p53. Analyses by ELISA showed significantly higher IL-17 serum levels in patients with colorectal carcinoma than in control subjects (IL-17; mean 128.52+/-47.62 pg/ml vs. mean 101.91+/-22.46 pg/ml; p=0.022). We also found an inverse correlation between p53 expression and the level of IL-17 in the serum of patients with CRC. In fact, the serum concentration of IL-17 was significantly higher in patients who did not express p53 (p=0.023). There was no significant correlation between the expression of p53 and VEGF. However, concomitant expression of VEGF and p53 showed a significant correlation with the histological and nuclear grade of the carcinoma. The data presented in our study indicate that IL-17 might act as a valuable tumor marker in patients with CRC and that combined analysis of p53 and VEGF expression might provide additional information about tumor features.
