RESUMO

The high morbidity of acute respiratory infections constitutes a crucial global health burden. In particular, for SARS-CoV-2, non-pharmaceutical intervention geared to enforce social distancing policies, vaccination, and treatments will remain an essential part of public health policies to mitigate and control disease outbreaks. However, the implementation of mitigation measures directed to increase social distancing when the risk of contagion is a complex enterprise because of the impact of NPI on beliefs, political views, economic issues, and, in general, public perception. The way of implementing these mitigation policies studied in this work is the so-called traffic-light monitoring system that attempts to regulate the application of measures that include restrictions on mobility and the size of meetings, among other non-pharmaceutical strategies. Balanced enforcement and relaxation of measures guided through a traffic-light system that considers public risk perception and economic costs may improve the public health benefit of the policies while reducing their cost. We derive a model for the epidemiological traffic-light policies based on the best response for trigger measures driven by the risk perception of people, instantaneous reproduction number, and the prevalence of a hypothetical acute respiratory infection. With numerical experiments, we evaluate and identify the role of appreciation from a hypothetical controller that could opt for protocols aligned with the cost due to the burden of the underlying disease and the economic cost of implementing measures. As the world faces new acute respiratory outbreaks, our results provide a methodology to evaluate and develop traffic light policies resulting from a delicate balance between health benefits and economic implications.

Phaseolus vulgaris is originally from the American continent. It is renowned as one of the preferred legume choice in the Peruvian market, due to its high content of nutrients. The Peruvian coast valleys are key-production areas for local varieties of the common bean crops. Soil-borne plant pathogens, however, favored by soil and environmental conditions, may reduce crop production. The aim of this study was to conduct a bio prospection of the antagonistic native bacteria of the north, south and central part of the coastal areas related to the common bean. A collection of 26 strains isolated from the rhizosphere of common bean plants showed high potential to control the growth of Sclerotinia, Fusarium and Rhizoctonia due to the production of both volatile and non-volatile organic compounds. Most of the strains were able to suppress fungal growth due to the presence of non-volatile organic compounds, such as hydrolytic enzymes, siderophores and antifungal lipopeptide production. Bacillus IcBac2.1 strain showed a remarkable ability to halt the majority of phytopathogens producing antifungal lipopeptides. The crude lipopeptides were soluble in polar solvents and remained stable at high temperatures and low pH. Strains were also able to inhibit fungal growth through volatile organic compounds. Alcaligenes TvPs2.4 and Pseudomonas TvPs1.6 showed the highest inhibition strength against the tested phytopathogens. Each strain produced 21 volatile organic compounds detected by SPME/GC-MS analysis. The compounds with the highest concentration were dimethyl disulfide and D-limonene. The 16S rRNA gene sequence confirmed that the strains were closely related to Bacillus, Paenibacillus, Achromobacter, Pseudomonas, Serratia and Alcaligenes.

The genetic population of Triatoma sordida group 1, a secondary vector of Chagas disease in Bolivia, was studied by multi-locus enzyme electrophoresis. A total of 253 nymphal and adult specimens collected from seven neighbouring localities in the Velasco Province, Department of Santa Cruz, were processed. The relatively low genetic variability was confirmed for this species (rate of polymorphism: 0.20). The absence of genetic disequilibrium detected within the seven localities was demonstrated. A geographical structuration appears between localities with distances greater than 20 km apart. Although T. sordida presents a relatively reduced dispersive capacity, its panmictic unit is wider than compared with T. infestans. Genetic distances between T. sordida populations were correlated with geographic distance. Gene flow between geographic populations of T. sordida provides an efficient framework for effective vigilance and control protocols.

Eight natural Bolivian populations of two closely related species of Triatominae, Triatoma sordida and T. guasayana, were analysed by multilocus enzyme electrophoresis at 20 loci. Both species were readily separated and no natural hybrid was observed. Among the silvatic sample of T. sordida, strong departure from panmixia within and between loci was detected in two sites of the Chaco, suggesting two reproductively separate populations easily recognized at Idh2 and Mdh2 loci. Genetic distance between them was in agreement with the hypothesis of distinct species. However, the detection of 3% of putative hybrids suggested a recent evolutionary divergence.
