RESUMO

To explore the effect of provider communication-skills training on frequency of intimate partner violence (IPV) and reproductive coercion (RC) assessment, four family planning clinics were randomized to IPV/RC communication-skills building workshop or standard knowledge-based IPV/RC training and compared to historical controls from the same clinics (before any training). Female patients aged 16-29 completed after-visit surveys. Primary outcomes included provider discussion about IPV/RC, receipt of safety card with IPV/RC resources and patient disclosure of IPV/RC. Chi-square tests were used to compare groups that received training and historical controls. Participants (training: n = 103; historical control: n = 576) were predominantly white with mean age of 22. More patients reported discussion about healthy relationships in both training groups (78-90%) compared to historical controls (49-52%, P < 0.001 for both). Discussion on birth control sabotage and pregnancy coercion was infrequent with patient-participants in both groups (6-17 and 4-13%, respectively). More patients in the clinics that received training reported receiving a safety card (72-84%) as compared to historical controls (9%, P < 0.001 for both). Overall, in this exploratory study, both communication-skills and standard training improved frequency of IPV communication when compared to historical controls but with few differences when compared to each other.

RESUMO

We show experimentally and theoretically how the relative phase in a short, linearly polarized microwave pulse consisting of two phase-locked frequencies is effective for strong-field quantum control of He Rydberg atoms when the frequency ratio p:q is 3:1. It is also effective when p:q = 2:1 but less effective for 3:2. Parameters in our experiment are similar to those investigating quantum control of tightly bound atoms or molecules with ultrashort pulsed lasers.

RESUMO

The authors compared the agreement between clinical, radiological and surgical diagnoses in 33 cases of nucleus pulposus prolapse. A complete agreement of diagnoses was obtained in 88% of cases. The mechanism and incidence of different signs and their importance for the diagnosis of nucleus pulposus prolapse are discussed. It should be stressed that the compression of nerve roots recognized on radiculography is not pathognomonic sign of prolapse and may be due to such processes as development of marginal osteophytes in the degenerative disc disease, thickening of the posterior longitudinal ligament, hypertrophy of radicular processes or necks of vertebral arches. In the light of own experiences and data from the literature the authors consider radiculography with Amipaque and computer tomography as the method of choice in cases with suspected disc herniation in the lumbar region.

RESUMO

The authors report a case of zoster with signs of transverse myelitis and peripheral involvement of the facial nerve. The fact that tranverse myelitis developed late after zoster and was followed by facial nerve palsy is stressed. The involvement of these nervous structures occurred in a way suggesting exacerbations. In the light of literature data and the described case the authors state that zoster with complications in the form of multifocal nervous system involvement occurring at different time intervals is infrequent.

RESUMO

The authors report a case of Ramsay-Hunt syndrome during cervical zoster in the C2--C4 area. The case reserves attention in view of the fact that facial nerve paralysis and paralysis of both parts of the right acoustic nerve occurred as a second exacerbation of the disease 16 days after the onset. Permanent hearing impairment in the right ear after regression of facial nerve paralysis and paralysis of the vestibular part of the acoustic nerve were also exceptionally rare signs.

RESUMO

The chemical kinetics characterizing a DF-CO(2) transfer chemical laser were verified by utilizing a subsonic laser system which, for most conditions, could be approximated as premixed and at constant pressure. In such a laser, fluid dynamic effects are minimized, and the role of the kinetics model in characterizing the DF-CO(2) system is emphasized. Predictions of zero power gain, DF(v) number densities, thermocouple temperatures, and laser power were compared with data for an optical cavity pressure range of 21-79 Torr. The results show that the kinetics model gives an accurate description of the DP-CO(2) optical cavity. Mixing phenomena were found to become important at cavity pressures below 40 Torr.

RESUMO

A nonequilibrium model has been used to simulate successfully experimental data obtained on two different DF-CO(2) chemical transfer lasers. The sensitivity of the model to changes in the reaction rate constants, to mixing, and to F atom surface recombination has been investigated. The model was found to provide reasonable agreement with the known experimental facts relating to cw DF-CO(2) chain reaction laser flow fields. It was found that considerable simplification of the chemical model is possible at the sacrifice of some analytical precision.
