RESUMO

III.-IV. stage, protein-calorie malnourished, pharyngolaryngeal tumorous patients were artificially fed perioperatively. Protein source (soya-protein concentrate, TOFU-soya-protein-cottage cheese) manufactured in Hungary, was administered in enteral feeding through naso-gastric tube. The metabolism, transport and utility of the soya-based diet were investigated by biochemical methods and compared to the previously administered tube-feeding. The method is advised on the base of the favourable experiences of the authors.

RESUMO

The authors nourished artificially patients with stage III.--IV. pharyngeal and laryngeal tumors in the preoperative phase at the Department of Head and Neck Surgery, Postgraduate Medical School. The courses were monitored with biochemical and antropometrical measurements. The good results of wound healing advocate the use of the described method.

RESUMO

At the Department of Head and Neck Surgery of the Postgraduate Medical University the authors surveyed the nutrition state of 20 patients with stage III-IV locally advanced pharyngolaryngeal tumours. The control data were provided by 20 patients with benign lesions. It can be established that among the hematological and biochemical tests the studies of the N-balance, the serum transferrin as well as the antropometric measurements are objective markers of the protein-calory malnutrition of the cancer patients. The authors emphasize, however, that the immunological investigations need further purification.

RESUMO

The data on 356 laryngectomies during a 12-year period were analysed retrospectively. The operations were divided into three groups: group I, laryngectomy alone; group II, laryngectomy and secondary neck dissection; group III, one-stage laryngectomy and radical neck dissection. Most patients had advanced disease (stage III and IV: 54.5% and 23.9%, respectively). Supraglottic and glotto-supraglottic tumours were commonest (39.6% and 36.8%, respectively). The results of palpation, fine-needle biopsy and histology of the lymph nodes are compared. The mean survival time for the three groups was 53.4, 42.7 and 29.8 months, respectively, and the 5-year survival rates were 61.9%, 32.0% and 30.8%, respectively.

RESUMO

The authors describe the characteristics of branchiogenic carcinoma as that of a pathological entity on the occasion of reporting four cases. The clinical course of the disease and the cytological and histological features are discussed on the basis of our observations and literature data. The authors stress the importance of careful and repeated clinical examinations, which exclude the possibility of a primary tumor of other localization, in establishing the diagnosis of branchiogenic carcinoma.
