RESUMO

A novel pneumonia-like coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by a novel coronavirus named SARS-CoV-2 has swept across China and the world. Public health measures that were effective in previous infection outbreaks (eg, wearing a face mask, quarantining) were implemented in this outbreak. Available multidimensional social network data that take advantage of the recent rapid development of information and communication technologies allow for an exploration of disease spread and control via a modernized epidemiological approach. By using spatiotemporal data and real-time information, we can provide more accurate estimates of disease spread patterns related to human activities and enable more efficient responses to the outbreak. Two real cases during the COVID-19 outbreak demonstrated the application of emerging technologies and digital data in monitoring human movements related to disease spread. Although the ethical issues related to using digital epidemiology are still under debate, the cases reported in this article may enable the identification of more effective public health measures, as well as future applications of such digitally directed epidemiological approaches in controlling infectious disease outbreaks, which offer an alternative and modern outlook on addressing the long-standing challenges in population health.

RESUMO

The formation of a fluid-filled cystic cavity after spinal cord injury (SCI) is a major obstacle for neural regeneration. In this study, the post-SCI cavity was bridged by a functional self-assembling peptide (F-SAP) nanofiber hydrogel coupled with growth factor "cocktail". A sustained release of growth factors was achieved by carefully tailoring the physical hindrances and charge-induced interactions between the growth factors and the peptide nanofibers. Such an engineering microenvironment elicited axon regeneration, as determined by tracing of the descending pathway in the dorsal columns and immunochemical detection of regenerating axons beyond the lesion. Furthermore, the dynamic spatiotemporal activation line of endogenous NSCs (eNSCs) after severe SCI was thoroughly investigated. The results indicated that the growth factor-coupled F-SAP greatly facilitated eNSC proliferation, neuronal differentiation, maturation, myelination, and more importantly, the formation of interconnection with severed descending corticospinal tracts. The robust endogenous neurogenesis essentially led to the recovery of locomotion and electrophysiological properties. In conclusion, the growth factor-coupled F-SAP nanofiber hydrogel elucidated the therapeutic effect of eliciting endogenous neurogenesis by locally reassembling an extracellular matrix.

RESUMO

Point-of-care testing (POCT) devices used in multiplex bioassays are in great demand for clinical, environmental and biomedical applications. Photonic crystal beads (PCBs), as structural color self-coding carriers, can be integrated with microfluidic chips to realize convenient and highly sensitive biomarker detection. Here we developed a three dimensional (3D) microfluidic chip based on PCBs, which is low cost and easy to manufacture for mass production and application. The chip was fabricated with polyethylene terephthalate, polymethyl methacrylate sheets, a Ni square mesh grid and transparent double-sided tape. In practice, the target molecules could be captured by PCBs immobilized with probes in a flow-through manner. It was found that the as-proposed chip needed less washing and its background was effectively reduced in comparison with a flow-over chip. Besides, the limit of detection (LOD) of anti-human alpha fetoprotein (AFP) was calculated to be 18.92 ng mL-1, which could meet the need of clinical detection of AFP. Furthermore, the chip demonstrated the feasibility of simultaneous detection of human immunoglobulin G, carcinoembryonic antigen and AFP, which suggests that it has a broad application prospect in multiplex bioassays.
