RESUMO

Studying the implications and characterizations of the excited-state quantum phase transitions (ESQPTs) would enable us to understand various phenomena observed in quantum many-body systems. In this work, we delve into the affects and characterizations of the ESQPTs in the anharmonic Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model by means of the entropy of the quantum work distribution. The entropy of the work distribution measures the complexity of the work distribution and behaves as a valuable tool for analyzing nonequilibrium work statistics. We show that the entropy of the work distribution captures salient signatures of the underlying ESQPTs in the model. In particular, a detailed analysis of the scaling behavior of the entropy verifies that it not only acts as a witness of the ESQPTs but also reveals the difference between different types of ESQPTs. We further demonstrate that the work distribution entropy also behaves as a powerful tool for understanding the features and differences of ESQPTs in the energy space. Our results provide further evidence of the usefulness of the entropy of the work distribution for investigating various phase transitions in quantum many-body systems and open up a promising way for experimentally exploring the signatures of ESQPTs.

BACKGROUND: Nigeria is facing a severe malaria crisis, accounting for a significant proportion of global cases and deaths of malaria. This study aimed to investigate the differences between female-headed households (FHHs) and male-headed households (MHHs) and their impact on malaria risk among children under five (U5) in Nigeria. METHODS: Data from the 2021 Nigeria Malaria Indicator Survey (NMIS) were used for this cross-sectional study. A representative sample of 10,988 households was analysed, with key variables subjected to frequency calculations, descriptive statistics, and bivariate analyses using t-tests and chi-square analyses to compare the differences between FHHs and MHHs. RESULTS: Among all participants, 92.1% (N = 10,126) reported residing in male-headed households, while 7.8% (N = 862) reported living in female-headed households. MHHs were significantly more likely to own insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) than FHHs (64.7% vs. 53.6%, P < 0.001). U5 children in MHHs had a greater likelihood of sleeping under a bed net the night before the survey than U5 children in FHHs (35.3% vs. 30.0%, P < 0.05). The prevalence of fever in the previous two weeks among U5 children was similar in MHHs and FHHs (35.4% vs. 31.4%), and the testing rates for malaria among U5 children who experienced febrile episodes were higher in MHHs than FHHs (22.4% vs. 15.4%, P < 0.05). Although not statistically significant, FHHs exhibited a higher percentage of U5 children testing positive for malaria compared to MHHs (87.8% vs. 78.9%). On the other hand, FHHs had higher education levels, overall wealth index scores, and a larger presence in urban areas compared to MHHs (P < 0.001). Moreover, FHHs reported higher adherence to malaria prevention awareness (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: In Nigeria, FHHs enjoy relatively better socioeconomic conditions and stronger awareness of malaria prevention compared to their male-headed counterparts. Contrary to expectations, FHHs are at an increased risk of malaria in children under 5 years old. This phenomenon is associated with entrenched gender inequality and the challenges women face in accessing critical assets. As women in FHHs bear the responsibility of income generation while caring for their children, it is crucial to prioritize interventions that address malaria management in FHHs to reduce both malaria incidence and mortality rates.

Perovskite quantum dots (QDs) and organic materials have great research potential in the field of optoelectronic devices. In this paper, MEH-PPV/CsPbBr3heterojunction photodetectors (PDs) are prepared by spin coating method based on the good photoelectric properties of CsPbBr3perovskite QDs and MEH-PPV. The MEH-PPV/CsPbBr3heterojunction improves the energy level arrangement, and CsPbBr3QDs can passivate the surface defects of MEH-PPV films to achieve effective charge separation and transfer, thus inhibiting the dark current and improving the photoelectric performance of the device. Under 532 nm laser irradiation, the responsivity (R) of MEH-PPV/CsPbBr3heterojunction PD is 11.98 A W-1, the specific detectivity (D*) is 6.98 × 1011Jones, and the response time is 15/16 ms. This work provides experience for the study of perovskite QDs and organic materials heterojunction optoelectronic devices.

Objectives: Human echinococcosis remains an important public health problem. The aim of this study was to analyze the prevalence and spatial distribution characteristics of human echinococcosis cases in southern Xinjiang, China from 2005 to 2021. Methods: Human echinococcosis cases were collected from the National Infectious Disease Reporting System. Joinpoint regression analysis was performed to explore the trends. Spatial autocorrelation, hot spot analysis, as well as spatial-temporal clustering analysis were conducted to confirm the distribution and risk factors. Results: A total of 4580 cases were reported in southern Xinjiang during 2005-2021, with a mean annual incidence of 2.56/100,000. Echinococcosis incidence showed an increasing trend from 2005 to 2017 (APC = 17.939, 95%CI: 13.985 to 22.029) and a decreasing trend from 2017 to 2021 (APC = -18.769, 95%CI: 28.157 to -8.154). Echinococcosis cases had a positive spatial autocorrelation in 2005-2021 (Moran's I = 0.19, P < 0.05). The disease hotspots were located in the east and west in these areas, then returned to the east clusters, including Hejing, Heshuo, Wuqia, Atushi, Aheqi, and Yanqi Hui Autonomous County. Meanwhile, spatial-temporal analysis identified the first cluster comprised of five counties (cities): Yanqi Hui Autonomous County, Korla City, Bohu County, Hejing County, and Heshuo County. And secondary clusters 1-3 are predominantly in Wushi County, Aheqi County, Keping County, Atushi City, Wuqia County and Cele County. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that echinococcosis is still an important zoonotic parasitic disease in southern Xinjiang, yet it showed a certain degree of spatial clustering. It is crucial to implement comprehensive prevention and control measures to effectively combat the epidemic of echinococcosis.

Ozone-biologically activated carbon (BAC) filtration is an advanced treatment process that can be applied to remove recalcitrant organic micro-pollutants in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs). In this study, we continuously monitored a new and an old BAC filter in a DWTP for 1 year to compare their water purification performance and microbial community evolution. The results revealed that, compared with the new filter, the use of the old BAC filter facilitated a slightly lower rate of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal. In the case of the new BAC filter, we recorded general increases in the biomass and microbial diversity of the biofilm with a prolongation of operating time, with the biomass stabilizing after 7 months. For both new and old BAC filters, Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria were the dominant bacterial phyla. At the genus level, the microbial community gradually shifted over the course of operation from a predominance of Herminiimonas and Hydrogenophaga to one predominated by Bradyrhizbium, Bryobacter, Hyphomicrobium, and Pedomicrobium, with Bradyrhizobium being established as the most abundant genus in the old BAC filter. Regarding spatial distribution, we detected reductions in the biomass and number of operational taxonomic units with increasing biofilm depth, whereas there was a corresponding increase in microbial diversity. However, compared with the effects of time, the influence of depth on the composition of the biofilm microbial community was considerably smaller. Furthermore, co-occurrence network analysis revealed that the microbial community network of the new filter after 11 months of operation was the most tightly connected, although its modular coefficient was the lowest of those assessed. We speculate that the positive and negative interactions within the network may be attributable to symbiotic or competitive relationships among species. Moreover, there may have been a significant negative interaction between SWB02 and Acidovorax, plausibly associated with a competition for substrates.

RESUMO

Zika virus (ZIKV), which belongs to the Flavivirus family, is mainly transmitted via the bite of Aedes mosquitoes. In newborns, ZIKV infection can cause severe symptoms such as microcephaly, while in adults, it can lead to Guillain‒Barré syndrome (GBS). Due to the lack of specific therapeutic methods against ZIKV, the development of a safe and effective vaccine is extremely important. Several potential ZIKV vaccines, such as live attenuated, inactivated, nucleic acid, viral vector, and recombinant subunit vaccines, have demonstrated promising outcomes in clinical trials involving human participants. Therefore, in this review, the recent developmental progress, advantages and disadvantages of these five vaccine types are examined, and practical recommendations for future development are provided.

RESUMO

Microbially influenced corrosion (MIC) is a formidable challenge in the marine industry, resulting from intricate interactions among various biochemical reactions and microbial species. Many preventions used to mitigate biocorrosion fail due to ignorance of the MIC mechanisms. This review provides a summary of the current research on microbial corrosion in marine environments, including corrosive microbes and biocorrosion mechanisms. We also summarized current strategies for inhibiting MIC and proposed future research directions for MIC mechanisms and prevention. This review aims to comprehensively understand marine microbial corrosion and contribute to novel strategy developments for biocorrosion control in marine environments.

The potential of microRNA regulation in oncotherapy is limited by the lack of delivery vehicles. Herein, it is shown that fluoropolymer coated DNA nanoclews (FNCs) provide outstanding ability to deliver oligonucleotide through circulation and realize near infrared (NIR) light activated angiogenesis suppression to abrogate tumors. Oligonucleotides are loaded in DNA nanoclews through sequence specific bindings and then a fluorinated zwitterionic polymer is coated onto the surface of nanoclews. Further incorporating quantum dots in the polymer coating endows the vectors with NIR-IIb (1500-1700 nm) fluorescence and NIR light triggered release ability. The FNC vector can deliver oligonucleotides to cancer cells systemically and realize on-demand cytosolic release of the cargo with high transfection efficiency. Taking advantage of the NIR-IIb emission, the whole delivery process of FNCs is visualized volumetrically in vivo with a NIR light sheet microscope. Loaded by FNCs, an oligonucleotide can effectively silence the target miRNA when activated with NIR light, and inhibit angiogenesis inside tumor, leading to complete ablation of cancer. These findings suggest FNCs can be used as an efficient oligonucleotide delivery platform to modulate the expression of endogenous microRNA in gene therapy of cancer.

Information on transgenerational effects of cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) within hour of exposure is scarce. To the end, larvae of marine medaka Oryzias melastigma at 0 day-post-hatching (dph) were subjected to LC50 for 96-h of Cd or Zn for 0.5 and 6 h, and then transferred into clear water for 95 days until the generation of offspring larvae at 25 dph. Growth, antioxidant capacity and stress response in offspring larvae were examined. Exposure to Zn for 0.5 h or Cd for 0.5 h and 6 h promoted growth performance and reduced total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). Malondialdehyde (MDA) and cortisol levels declined in larvae following Zn exposure for 0.5 h, whereas Cd exposure increased MDA content and did not affect cortisol levels. These physiological changes could be partially explained by transcription of genes in the hormone/insulin-like growth factor-I (GH/IGF) axis, NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) signaling, and hypothalamus-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis. For example, Zn exposure for 0.5 h up-regulated genes encoding growth hormone (gh) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein (igfbp1) and down-regulated mRNA levels of nrf2, Kelch-like-ECH-associated protein 1 gene (keap1a), keap1b, sod1, mineralocorticoid receptor (mr), corticotropin-releasing hormone receptor (crhr1), corticotropin-releasing hormone binding protein (crhbp), cytochrome P450 (cyp11a1, cyp17a1) and hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (hsd3b1). Cd exposure for 0.5 and 6 h up-regulated growth hormone release hormone (ghrh) and igfbp1, down-regulated nrf2 and keap1a, and did not affect mRNA levels of HPI axis genes. Taken together, this study demonstrated that short-term metal exposure during larvae phase had positive and negative effects on offspring even after a long recovery.

Ag2S quantum dot (QD) photodetectors (PDs) have attracted a lot of attention in the field of imaging system and optical communication. However, the current Ag2S PDs mainly works in the near-infrared band, and its detection ability in the visible band remains to be strengthened. In this paper, we used poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) with high carrier mobility and Ag2S QDs to construct heterojunction PD. Stronger absorption in blends with polymer P3HT compared to single Ag2S QDs. The optical absorption spectra show that the Ag2S/P3HT has strong light absorption peak at 394 and 598 nm. The results show that P3HT significantly enhances the absorption of Ag2S QDs from the visible to near-infrared band. The output characteristics, transfer characteristics and fast switching capability of the device at 405 nm, 532 nm and 808 nm were tested. The device has the responsivity of 6.05 A W-1, 83.72 A W-1and 37.31 A W-1under 405 nm, 532 nm and 808 nm laser irradiation. This work plays an important role in improving the detection performance of Ag2S QDs and broadening its applications in photoelectric devices for weak light and wide spectrum detection.

The enrichment and health risk assessment of trace elements in crayfish on a national scale are significant for food safety due to the rapidly expanding crayfish consumption in China. In the present study, 4709 samples were extracted from databases to explore the spatiotemporal variation characteristics of trace elements in crayfish. Due to the variance in the background value of trace elements, the level of trace elements varies by region. Additionally, levels of As and Cr in crayfish increased with the promotion of intensive rice-crayfish coculture in China. Health risk assessment results revealed that trace elements may cause non-carcinogenic risk for crayfish consumption for adults and children from the mid-lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and the main risk was from As and Hg. The cancer risk values of As for children and adults in Zhejiang, Anhui, Heilongjiang, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangsu, Jiangxi and Shandong provinces were above the allowable value. There is concern about the non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk of consuming crayfish containing trace elements in some areas in China. Therefore, the results can serve as a critical reference for policy purposes in China. In addition, it is recommended that further research and assessment on crayfish consumption are required.

Toroidal dipole resonance can significantly reduce radiation loss of materials, potentially improving sensor sensitivity. Generally, toroidal dipole response is suppressed by electric and magnetic dipoles in natural materials, making it difficult to observe experimentally. However, as 2D metamaterials, metasurfaces can weaken the electric and magnetic dipole, enhancing toroidal dipole response. Here, we propose a new graphene-integrated toroidal resonance metasurface as an ultra-sensitive chemical sensor, capable of qualitative detection of chlorothalonil in the terahertz region, down to a detection limit of 100 pg/mL. Our results demonstrate graphene-integrated toroidal resonance metasurfaces as a promising basis for ultra-sensitive, qualitative detection in chemical and biological sensing.

Mode-division multiplexing (MDM) is a promising solution to improve data transmission capacity for future optical interconnect networks. Mode converters and mode filters play a key role in on-chip MDM systems. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a device, enabling mode conversion and filtering simultaneously, which is composed of asymmetrical directional couplers with subwavelength gratings, in a small footprint of 14.7 µm × 1.42 µm. The device can realize optical mode conversion between the first-order transverse electric (TE) mode and the fundamental TE mode, and can also filter the fundamental TE mode efficiently. The conversion efficiency is over 95%, with a broad 1 dB bandwidth over 80 nm and a high mode extinction ratio of >29 dB. As a mode filter, strong mode elimination of >30 dB is achieved.

BACKGROUND: Elderly patients tend to have poor self-efficacy and poor confidence in postoperative rehabilitation for hip fractures, and are prone to negative emotions, which affect treatment compliance. AIM: To evaluate the effects of evidence-based intervention on postoperative fear, compliance, and self-efficacy in elderly patients with hip fractures. METHODS: A total of 120 patients with hip fracture surgically treated from June 2018 to June 2020 at the orthopedic department of our hospital were selected and divided into intervention and routine groups (n = 60 each) according to different nursing methods. The basic rehabilitation methods of the two groups were consistent, but patients in the intervention group received evidence-based nursing interventions at the same time. Differences between groups in the scores of motion phobia, pain fear, rehabilitation training compliance, self-efficacy, nursing satisfaction, and hip joint function were compared before and after the intervention. RESULTS: Before the intervention, there were no statistically significant differences in motion phobia and pain fear scores between the groups (all P > 0.05). However, motion phobia scores at 1 wk after intervention initiation (P < 0.05), and pain fear scores at 1 wk and 2 wk after intervention initiation (all P < 0.05), were significantly lower in the intervention group than in the routine group. On the first day of intervention, there was no significant difference in rehabilitation treatment compliance between the groups (P > 0.05); however, at 2 wk after intervention initiation, rehabilitation compliance was significantly better in the intervention group than in the routine group (P < 0.05). Before the intervention, there were no statistically significant differences in the scores for the two self-efficacy dimensions (overcoming difficulties and rehabilitation exercise self-efficacy) and the total self-efficacy score between the groups (all P > 0.05). After 2 wk of intervention, the scores for these two dimensions of self-efficacy and the total self-efficacy score were significantly higher in the intervention group than in the routine group (all P < 0.05). At 3 and 6 mo after surgery, hip function as evaluated by the Harris hip score, was significantly better in the intervention group than in the routine group (P < 0.05). Additionally, overall nursing satisfaction was significantly higher in the intervention group than in the routine group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Evidence-based nursing intervention can alleviate fear of postoperative rehabilitation in elderly patients who underwent hip fracture surgery, and improve rehabilitation treatment compliance and patient self-efficacy, which promote hip function recovery.

Perovskites and graphene are receiving a meteoric rise in popularity in the field of active photonics because they exhibit excellent optoelectronic properties for dynamic manipulation of light-matter interactions. However, challenges still exist, such as the instability of perovskites under ambient conditions and the low Fermi level of graphene in experiments. These shortcomings limit the scope of applications when they are used alone in advanced optical devices. However, the combination of graphene and perovskites is still a promising route for efficient control of light-matter interactions. Here, we report a dual-optoelectronic metadevice fabricated by integrating terahertz metasurfaces with a sandwich complex composed of graphene, polyimide, and perovskites for ultra-wideband and multidimensional manipulation of higher-order Fano resonances. Owing to the photogenerated carriers and electrostatic doping effect, the dual optoelectronic metadevice showed different manipulation behavior at thermal imbalance (electrostatic doping state of the system). The modulation depth of the transmission amplitude reached 200%, the total resonant frequency shift was 800 GHz, and the tunable range of the resonant frequency was 68.8%. In addition, modulation of the maximum phase reached 346°. This work will inspire a new generation of metasurface-based optical devices that combine two active materials.

It is very important to understand the communication and interaction mechanisms between the host and its resident microorganisms on host physiology and for precise diagnosis and treatment. Although intestinal fungi and bacteria dysbiosis is increasingly linked to ankylosing spondylitis (AS), their mechanisms of action have been rarely illustrated. In this paper, fecal samples from 10 AS monkeys and 10 healthy controls were collected to systematically characterize the gut mycobiota and microbiota in AS monkeys by 16S rRNA and ITS2 DNA sequencing. Our results showed the gut fungi of Kazachstania pintolopesii, Saccharomycetaceae, Kazachstania, and Saccharomyceteles. Saccharomycetes were specially enriched in AS, and the microbiota of AS monkeys was characterized by an increased abundance of Clostridia, Clostridiales, Ruminococcaceae, and Prevotella 2, using Line Discriminant Analysis Effect Size. Compared to healthy controls, decreased ITS2/16S biodiversity ratios and altered bacterial-fungal interkingdom networks were observed in AS monkeys. Oral administration of K. pintolopesii activates IL-17RA pathway and induce inflammatory reaction in the colonic tissue of C57BL/6 mice, as well as multiple AS phenotypes, including fungal and bacterial dysbiosis, immune responses of NK cells, platelets, T cells, leukocytes, B-cell activation, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease. We also found the secreted products of K. pintolopesii could activate the IL-17RA pathway, which induces PANoptosis in macrophage RAW264.7 cells. Much worse, the PANoptosis products could promote the proliferation and morphological changes of K. pintolopesii, which resulted in much more K. pintolopesii and a severe inflammatory reaction. Interestingly, the inflammatory factor TNF-α can promote the morphological transformation of Candida albicans and K. pintolopesii, which is worthy of further study. The characteristic fungi in all these findings implied that fungal and bacterial dysbiosis have a close link to AS and that their communication and interaction indeed play an important role in autoimmune responses, and K. pintolopesii could be a potential marker microorganism in AS, although its specific mechanism is not fully elucidated.

Waveguide taper, a key component in the photonic integrated circuit (PIC), enables on-chip mode conversion, but large-footprint tapers are detrimental to the PIC, which desires compact and efficient devices. Polarization sensitivity also limits the tapers in the applications involving orthogonal modes. In this work, we design an efficient polarization-insensitive ultra-short MMI-based waveguide taper, through the mode spreading principle and the self-image principle. The proposed taper is 26.3 µm long, one order of magnitude shorter than the standard linear taper. We fabricate the taper, and experimentally demonstrate that it exhibits a high transmission efficiency of ∼70% and a wide 1 dB bandwidth of >54nm, for both TE and TM polarizations.

It is known that the microbiome affects human physiology, emotion, disease, growth, and development. Most humans exhibit reduced appetites under high temperature and high humidity (HTHH) conditions, and HTHH environments favor fungal growth. Therefore, we hypothesized that the colonic mycobiota may affect the host's appetite under HTHH conditions. Changes in humidity are also associated with autoimmune diseases. In the current study mice were fed in an HTHH environment (32°C ± 2°C, relative humidity 95%) maintained via an artificial climate box for 8 hours per day for 21 days. Food intake, the colonic fungal microbiome, the feces metabolome, and appetite regulators were monitored. Components of the interleukin 17 pathway were also examined. In the experimental groups food intake and body weight were reduced, and the colonic mycobiota and fecal metabolome were substantially altered compared to control groups maintained at 25°C ± 2°C and relative humidity 65%. The appetite-related proteins LEPT and POMC were upregulated in the hypothalamus (p < 0.05), and NYP gene expression was downregulated (p < 0.05). The expression levels of PYY and O-linked ß-N-acetylglucosamine were altered in colonic tissues (p < 0.05), and interleukin 17 expression was upregulated in the colon. There was a strong correlation between colonic fungus and sugar metabolism. In fimo some metabolites of cholesterol, tromethamine, and cadaverine were significantly increased. There was significant elevation of the characteristic fungi Solicoccozyma aeria, and associated appetite suppression and interleukin 17 receptor signaling activation in some susceptible hosts, and disturbance of gut bacteria and fungi. The results indicate that the gut mycobiota plays an important role in the hypothalamus endocrine system with respect to appetite regulation via the gut-brain axis, and also plays an indispensable role in the stability of the gut microbiome and immunity. The mechanisms involved in these associations require extensive further studies.

Borophene, a new member of the two-dimensional material family, has been found to support surface plasmon polaritons in visible and infrared regimes, which can be integrated into various optoelectronic and nanophotonic devices. To further explore the potential plasmonic applications of borophene, we propose an infrared plasmonic sensor based on the borophene ribbon array. The nanostructured borophene can support localized surface plasmon resonances, which can sense the local refractive index of the environment via spectral response. By analytical and numerical calculation, we investigate the influences of geometric as well as material parameters on the sensing performance of the proposed sensor in detail. The results show how to tune and optimize the sensitivity and figure of merit of the proposed structure and reveal that the borophene sensor possesses comparable sensing performance with conventional plasmonic sensors. This work provides the route to design a borophene plasmonic sensor with high performance and can be applied in next-generation point-of-care diagnostic devices.
