RESUMO

Most of kiwifruit cultivars (e.g. Actinidia chinensis cv. Donghong, "DH") were sensitive to waterlogging, thus, waterlogging resistant rootstocks (e.g. Actinidia valvata Dunn, "Dunn") were widely used for kiwifruit industry. Those different species provided ideal materials to understand the waterlogging responses in kiwifruit. Compared to the weaken growth and root activities in "DH", "Dunn" maintained the relative high root activities under the prolonged waterlogging. Based on comparative analysis, transcript levels of pyruvate decarboxylase (PDCs) and alcohol dehydrogenase (ADHs) showed significantly difference between these two species. Both PDCs and ADHs had been significantly increased by waterlogging in "DH", while they were only limitedly triggered by 2 days stress and subsided during the prolonged waterlogging in "Dunn". Thus, 19 differentially expressed transcript factors (DETFs) had been isolated using weighted gene co-expression network analysis combined with transcriptomics and transcript levels of PDCs and ADHs in waterlogged "DH". Among these DETFs, dual luciferase and electrophoretic mobility shift assays indicated AcMYB68 could bind to and trigger the activity of AcPDC2 promoter. The stable over-expression of AcMYB68 significantly up-regulated the transcript levels of PDCs but inhibited the plant growth, especially the roots. Moreover, the enzyme activities of PDC in 35S::AcMYB68 were significantly enhanced during the waterlogging response than that in wild type plants. Most interestingly, comparative analysis indicated that the expression patterns of AcMYB68 and the previously characterized AcERF74/75 (the direct regulator on ADHs) either showed no responses (AcMYB68 and AcERF74) or very limited response (AcERF75) in "Dunn". Taken together, the restricted responses of AcMYB68 and AcERF74/75 in "Dunn" endow its waterlogging tolerance.

Prunus zhengheensis, an extremely rare population of apricots, originated in warm South-East China and is an excellent material for genetic breeding. However, most apricots and two related species (P. sibirica, P. mandshurica) are found in the cold northern regions in China and the mechanism of their distribution is still unclear. In addition, the classification status of P. zhengheensis is controversial. Thus, we generated a high-quality haplotype-resolved genome for P. zhengheensis, exploring key genetic variations in its adaptation and the causes of phylogenetic incongruence. We found extensive phylogenetic discordances between the nuclear and organelle phylogenies of P. zhengheensis, which could be explained by incomplete lineage sorting. A 242.22-Mb pan-genome of the Armeniaca section was developed with 13 chromosomal genomes. Importantly, we identified a 566-bp insertion in the promoter of the HSFA1d gene in apricot and showed that the activity of the HSFA1d promoter increased under low temperatures. In addition, HSFA1d overexpression in Arabidopsis thaliana indicated that HSFA1d positively regulated plant growth under chilling. Therefore, we hypothesized that the insertion in the promoter of HSFA1d in apricot improved its low-temperature adaptation, allowing it to thrive in relatively cold locations. The findings help explain the weather adaptability of Armeniaca plants.

Actinidia arguta, the most widely distributed Actinidia species and the second cultivated species in the genus, can be distinguished from the currently cultivated Actinidia chinensis on the basis of its small and smooth fruit, rapid softening, and excellent cold tolerance. Adaptive evolution of tetraploid Actinidia species and the genetic basis of their important agronomic traits are still unclear. Here, we generated a chromosome-scale genome assembly of an autotetraploid male A. arguta accession. The genome assembly was 2.77 Gb in length with a contig N50 of 9.97 Mb and was anchored onto 116 pseudo-chromosomes. Resequencing and clustering of 101 geographically representative accessions showed that they could be divided into two geographic groups, Southern and Northern, which first diverged 12.9 million years ago. A. arguta underwent two prominent expansions and one demographic bottleneck from the mid-Pleistocene climate transition to the late Pleistocene. Population genomics studies using paleoclimate data enabled us to discern the evolution of the species' adaptation to different historical environments. Three genes (AaCEL1, AaPME1, and AaDOF1) related to flesh softening were identified by multi-omics analysis, and their ability to accelerate flesh softening was verified through transient expression assays. A set of genes that characteristically regulate sexual dimorphism located on the sex chromosome (Chr3) or autosomal chromosomes showed biased expression during stamen or carpel development. This chromosome-level assembly of the autotetraploid A. arguta genome and the genes related to important agronomic traits will facilitate future functional genomics research and improvement of A. arguta.

BACKGROUND: The quality of transitional care is closely related to the health outcomes of patients, and understanding the status of transitional care for patients is crucial to improving the health outcomes of patients. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the quality of transitional care in elderly patients with chronic diseases and analyze its influencing factors, to provide a basis for improving transitional care services. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study. We used the Chinese version of the Partners at Care Transitions Measure (PACT-M) to survey patients with chronic diseases aged 60 years and older who were about to be discharged from five tertiary hospitals in Henan and Shanxi provinces. We used the mean ± standard deviation to describe the quality of transitional care, t-test or one-way ANOVA, and regression analysis to explore the factors affecting the quality of transitional care for patients. RESULTS: 182 elderly patients with chronic diseases aged ≥ 60 years completed the PACT-M survey. The scores of PACT-M1 and PACT-M2 were (30.69 ± 7.87) and (25.59 ± 7.14) points, respectively. The results of the t-test or one-way ANOVA showed that the patient's marital status, ethnicity, religion, educational level, preretirement occupation, residence, household income per month, and living situation had an impact on the quality of transitional care for elderly patients with chronic diseases (P < 0.05). The results of regression analyses showed that patients' preretirement occupation, social support, and health status were the main influences on the quality of transitional care for elderly patients with chronic diseases (P < 0.05), and they explained 63.1% of the total variance. CONCLUSIONS: The quality of transitional care for older patients with chronic illnesses during the transition from hospital to home needs further improvement. Factors affecting the quality of transitional care included patients' pre-retirement occupation, social support, and health status. We can improve the hospital-community-family tertiary linkage service to provide coordinated and continuous transitional care for patients based on their occupation, health status, and social support to enhance the quality of transitional care and the patient's health.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: DTI can be used to derive conventional diffusion measurements, which can measure WM abnormalities in multiple sclerosis. DTI can also be used to construct structural brain networks and derive network measurements. However, few studies have compared their sensitivity in detecting brain alterations, especially in longitudinal studies. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to determine which type of measurement is more sensitive in tracking the dynamic changes over time in MS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen patients with MS were recruited at baseline and followed up at 6 and 12 months. All patients underwent MR imaging and clinical evaluation at 3 time points. Diffusion and network measurements were derived, and their brain changes were evaluated. RESULTS: None of the conventional DTI measurements displayed statistically significant changes during the follow-up period; however, the nodal degree, nodal efficiency, and nodal path length of the left middle frontal gyrus and bilateral inferior frontal gyrus, opercular part showed significant longitudinal changes between baseline and at 12 months, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The nodal degree, nodal efficiency, and nodal path length of the left middle frontal gyrus and bilateral inferior frontal gyrus, opercular part may be used to monitor brain changes over time in MS.

At present, clinical outcomes of pancreatic cancer patients are still poor. New therapeutic targets for pancreatic cancer are urgently needed. Previous studies have indicated that Microtubule Associated Monooxygenase, Calponin and LIM Domain Containing 2 (MICAL2) is highly expressed in many tumors and promotes tumor progression. However, the role played by MICAL2 in pancreatic cancer remains unclear. Based on gene expression and clinical information from multiple datasets, we used comprehensive bioinformatics analysis in combination with tissue microarray to explore the function and clinical value of MICAL2. The results showed that MICAL2 was highly expressed in pancreatic cancer tissue and exhibited potential diagnostic capability. High expression of MICAL2 was also associated with poor prognosis and acted as an independent prognostic factor. MICAL2, mainly expressed in fibroblasts of pancreatic cancer, was closely related to metastasis and immune-related features, such as epithelial-mesenchymal transformation, extracellular cell matrix degradation, and inflammatory response. Furthermore, higher MICAL2 expression in pancreatic cancer was also associated with an increase in cancer-associated fibroblasts as well as M2 macrophage infiltration, and a reduction in CD8 + T cell infiltration, thereby facilitating the formation of an immunosuppressive microenvironment. Our results helped elucidate the clinical value and function in metastasis and immunity of MICAL2 in pancreatic cancer. These findings provided potential clinical strategies for diagnosis, targeted therapy combination immunotherapy, and prognosis in patients with pancreatic cancer.

Accumulating evidence has revealed the anti-inflammatory properties of Lactobacillus-derived exopolysaccharides (EPSs). However, interspecific differences among these Lactobacillus-derived anti-inflammatory EPSs have not been investigated. Cell experiments showed that Limosilactobacillus fermentum, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus, and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum-derived EPSs exhibited excellent anti-inflammatory efficacy in vitro. Subsequently, we used Lactobacillus-derived EPSs to treat colitis in mice. There was no significant difference in EPS's repair of the intestinal barrier from the five Lactobacillus species. However, Ligilactobacillus salivarius-derived EPSs and L. plantarum-derived EPSs more potently reduced proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, TNF-γ, and IL-17), increasing IL-10 concentrations in the colon. Lactobacillus-derived EPS moieties from five species regulate intestinal bacteria at the strain level. Immunofluorescence staining revealed that owing to the different infiltration and polarization effects of Lactobacillus-derived EPSs on macrophages, the in vitro and in vivo anti-inflammatory effects of Lactobacillus-derived EPSs were inconsistent. The structure-activity relationship showed that Lactobacillus-derived EPSs with high fructose content had excellent anti-inflammatory activity in vivo. The results mentioned above revealed that the anti-inflammatory activity of Lactobacillus-derived EPSs had interspecific variability, and the mechanism of anti-inflammatory action in vitro and in vivo was different.

Pb soil pollution poses a serious health risk to both the environment and humans. Immobilization is the most common strategy for remediation of heavy metal polluted soil. In this study, municipal sewage sludge was used as an amendment for rehabilitation of Pb-contaminated soils, for agricultural use, near a lead-acid battery factory. The passivation effect was further improved by the addition of phosphate fertilizer. It was found that the leachable Pb content in soils was decreased from 49.6 mg kg-1 to 16.1-36.6 mg kg-1 after remediation of sludge for 45 d at applied dosage of municipal sewage sludge of 4-16 wt%, and further decreased to 14.3-34.3 mg kg-1 upon extension of the remediation period to 180 d. The addition of phosphate fertilizer greatly enhanced the Pb immobilization, with leachable Pb content decreased to 2.0-23.6 mg kg-1 with increasing dosage of phosphate fertilizer in range of 0.8-16 wt% after 180 d remediation. Plant assays showed that the bioavailability of Pb was significantly reduced by the soil remediation, with the content of absorbed Pb in mung bean roots decreased by as much as 87.0%. The decrease in mobility and biotoxicity of the soil Pb is mainly attributed to the speciation transformation of carbonate, Fe-Mn oxides and organic matter bound Pb to residue Pb under the synergism of reduction effect of sludge and acid dissolution and precipitation effect of phosphate fertilizer. This study suggests a new method for remediation of Pb-contaminated soil and utilization of municipal sewage sludge resources.

X-ray/CT image registration plays a pivotal role in enhancing surgical navigation success rates. However, challenges stemming from sparse and noisy X-ray image features, coupled with the complexities of multi-parameter optimization, impose limitations on existing methods in terms of registration accuracy and efficiency. In response, this paper presents an innovative approach-a fast X-ray/CT image registration method based on perspective projection triangular features(F-PPTF). By leveraging the conformal nature of perspective projection, the proposed method constructs perspective projection triangular features with rotation, translation, and scale invariance using point feature descriptors. Diverging from multi-parameter iterative optimization techniques, this approach achieves the decoupling of the six transformation parameters. This decoupling simplifies computational intricacies, thereby facilitating swift registration. Experimental evaluations conducted on synthetic and real X-ray images reveal an average rotational absolute error of 0.41°, an average translational absolute error of 1.16 mm, and an average registration time of 14.89 s. In comparison to conventional registration methodologies, the method presented in this paper demonstrates pronounced superiority in terms of both registration accuracy and efficiency, thereby exhibiting heightened potential for broader applicability.

Owing to the increasingly complex economic environment and difficult employment situation, a large number of new occupations have emerged in China, leading to job diversification. Currently, the overall development status of new occupations in China and the structural characteristics of new occupation practitioners in different cities are still unclear. This study first constructed a development index system for new occupation practitioners from five dimensions (group size, cultural appreciation, salary level, occupation perception, and environmental perception). Relevant data to compare and analyze the development status of new occupation practitioners were derived from the big data mining of China's mainstream recruitment platforms and the questionnaire survey of new professional practitioners which from four first-tier cities and 15 new first-tier cities in China. The results show that the development level of new occupation practitioners in the four first-tier cities is the highest, and the two new first-tier cities, Chengdu and Hangzhou, have outstanding performance. The cities with the best development level of new occupation practitioners in Eastern, Central, and Western China are Shanghai, Wuhan, and Chengdu, respectively. Most new occupation practitioners in China are confident about the future of their careers. However, more than half of the 19 cities are uncoordinated in the five dimensions of the development of new occupation practitioners, especially those cities with middle development levels. A good policy environment and social environment have not yet been formulated to ensure the sustainable development of new occupation practitioners. Finally, we proposed the following countermeasures and suggestions: (1) Establish a classified database of new occupation talents. (2) Implement a talent industry agglomeration strategy. (3) Pay attention to the coordinated development of new occupation practitioners in cities.

Elevated serum uric acid (UA) level is related to type 2 diabetic retinopathy (DR). Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and cystatin C (Cys-C) have involvement in type 2 DR complicated with hyperuricemia (HUA) (HUDR), and we explored their clinical values in HUDR. Type 2 DR patients were allocated into HUDR/DR groups, with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients as the control group. Serum VEGF and inflammation markers hs-CRP, and Cys-C levels were assessed by ELISA and immunoturbidimetry. The correlations between serum UA level and VEGF/hs-CRP/Cys-C were analyzed by Pearson tests, diagnostic values of VEGF/hs-CRP/Cys-C were analyzed by receiver operating characteristic curves, and the independent risk factors in HUDR were analyzed by logistic multivariate regression. Serum VEGF/hs-CRP/Cys-C level differences among the T2DM/DR/HUDR groups were statistically significant, with the levels in HUDR > DR > T2DM. Serum UA level in HUDR patients was positively correlated with serum VEGF/hs-CRP/Cys-C. Serum VEGF/hs-CRP/Cys-C assisted in HUDR diagnosis, with their combination showing the greatest diagnostic value. UA/FPG/HbA1C/VEGF/hs-CRP/Cys-C were independent risk factors for HUDR. The incidence of proliferative DR was increased in HUDR patients. Collectively, serum VEGF, hs-CRP, and Cys-C levels in HUDR patients were increased, and HUA might promote DR progression.

Currently, two-dimensional (2D) materials with intrinsic antiferromagnetism have stimulated research interest due to their insensitivity to external magnetic fields and absence of stray fields. Here, we predict a family of stable transition metal (TM) borides, TMB12 (TM = V, Cr, Mn, Fe) monolayers, by combining TM atoms and B12 icosahedra based on first-principles calculations. Our results show that the four TMB12 monolayers have stable antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground states with large magnetic anisotropic energy. Among them, three TMB12 (TM=V, Cr, Mn) monolayers display an in-plane easy magnetization axis, while the FeB12 monolayer has an out-of-plane easy magnetization axis. Among them, the CrB12 and the FeB12 monolayers are AFM semiconductors with band gaps of 0.13 eV and 0.35 eV, respectively. In particular, the AFM FeB12 monolayer is a spin-polarized AFM material with a Néel temperature of 125 K. Moreover, the electronic and magnetic properties of the CrB12 and the FeB12 monolayers can be modulated by imposing external biaxial strains. Our findings show that the TMB12 monolayers are candidates for designing 2D AFM materials, with potential applications in electronic devices.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral microbleeds (CMB) are indicators of severe cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) that can be identified through hemosiderin-sensitive sequences in MRI. Specifically, quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) and deep learning were applied to detect CMBs in MRI. PURPOSE: To automatically detect CMB on QSM, we proposed a two-stage deep learning pipeline. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. SUBJECTS: A total number of 1843 CMBs from 393 patients (69 ± 12) with cerebral small vessel disease were included in this study. Seventy-eight subjects (70 ± 13) were used as external testing. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 3 T/QSM. ASSESSMENT: The proposed pipeline consisted of two stages. In stage I, 2.5D fast radial symmetry transform (FRST) algorithm along with a one-layer convolutional network was used to identify CMB candidate regions in QSM images. In stage II, the V-Net was utilized to reduce false positives. The V-Net was trained using CMB and non CMB labels, which allowed for high-level feature extraction and differentiation between CMBs and CMB mimics like vessels. The location of CMB was assessed according to the microbleeds anatomical rating scale (MARS) system. STATISTICAL TESTS: The sensitivity and positive predicative value (PPV) were reported to evaluate the performance of the model. The number of false positive per subject was presented. RESULTS: Our pipeline demonstrated high sensitivities of up to 94.9% at stage I and 93.5% at stage II. The overall sensitivity was 88.9%, and the false positive rate per subject was 2.87. With respect to MARS, sensitivities of above 85% were observed for nine different brain regions. DATA CONCLUSION: We have presented a deep learning pipeline for detecting CMB in the CSVD cohort, along with a semi-automated MARS scoring system using the proposed method. Our results demonstrated the successful application of deep learning for CMB detection on QSM and outperformed previous handcrafted methods. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 2 TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 2.

Liver cancer has become an important public health problem. In this study, bibliometrics and visual analysis were performed on the literature related to the risk factors and prevention of liver cancer, in order to understand the latest research progress of the risk factors and prevention of liver cancer. The Web of Science database was used as a retrieval platform to retrieve the published research results from 2012 to 2023. CiteSpace and VOSviewer were utilized for bibliometrics and visual analysis. A total of 2388 articles were screened according to exclusion criteria. Between 2012 and 2018, the number of articles published fluctuated. From 2018 to 2023, the number of published documents showed a steady upward trend. The 3 journals with the most publications are World Journal of Gastroenterology, PLOS ONE, and Hepatology. The United States and China are the countries with the most publications, while Harvard University, the National Institutes of Health and the University of Texas System are the 3 institutions with the most publications. Keywords such as hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, alcohol, obesity, recrudescence rate, global burden are hot words in the field of liver cancer risk factors and prevention. The current research mainly focuses on the influence of environmental factors, behavioral lifestyle and biological factors on liver cancer, as well as the primary and secondary prevention of liver cancer, but there are still many undetermined factors to be explored.

Under the impact of the era of big data and public emergency, the blurring of family-work boundaries and the increasing burden of family responsibilities will pose a great challenge to employee resilience and family work balance, which in turn will affect employees' work engagement. Therefore, based on the person-environment fit theory, this study aims to explore the potential mechanism and boundary conditions of employee family boundary flexibility fit on work engagement. This study conducted a random sampling of enterprise employees in China. A sample of 433 participants completed a questionnaire to provide data. We conduct hierarchical regression and Bootstrap analysis to verify the hypothesis model. The study found that employees' work engagement is significantly improved when their family boundary flexibility is matched. Family-work enrichment plays a role in mediating the impact of employees' family boundary flexibility on work engagement. The relationship between family-work enrichment and work engagement is moderated by family support. Therefore, enterprises should respect and value each employee's family boundary flexibility, establish family-friendly policies, and consider personal family boundary flexibility in employees' career development planning. This will promote the enhancement of employee resilience, enable better engagement in work, improve work efficiency, and enhance the core competitiveness of enterprises.

In mitochondria, the major subunits of oxidative phosphorylation complexes are translated by the mitochondrial ribosome (mito-ribosome). The correct insertion and assembly of these subunits into the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM) are facilitated by mitochondrial oxidase assembly protein 1 (Oxa1) during the translation process. This co-translational insertion process involves an association between the mito-ribosome and the C-terminus of Oxa1 (Oxa1-CTD) Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods were mainly used to investigate the structural characterization of yeast Oxa1-CTD and its mode of interaction with the E. coli 70S ribosome. Oxa1-CTD forms a transient α-helical structure within the residues P342-Q385, which were reported to form an α-helix when combining with the ribosome. Two conserved contact sites that could interact with the ribosome were further identified. The first site was located on the very end of the N-terminus (V321-I327), and the second one encompassed a stretch of amino acid residues I348-Q370. Based on our discoveries and previous reports, a model has been proposed in which Oxa1-CTD interacts with ribosomes, accompanied by transient-to-stable transitions at the second contact site. These observations may enhance our understanding of the potential role of Oxa1-CTD in facilitating the assembly of oxidative phosphorylation complexes and provide insight into the structural characteristics of Oxa1-CTD.

When a medical device or surgical instrument comes into contact with the patient's sterile tissue or mucous membrane during the various processes, the risk of introducing infections into the patient's body increases. Furthermore, an infection may be transmitted from one patient to another, from a patient to a member of the medical staff and vice versa or from the environment to the patient via improperly sterilized or disinfected equipment. A number of outbreaks and diseases have been documented in the hospital setting as a result of poorly sanitized devices. As a result, adequate disinfection procedures for medical and surgical items are required in all healthcare facilities. It is equally the responsibility of healthcare providers to reduce and eliminate such infections. Each hospital should have its own standards for sterilization and disinfection of equipment based on the intended use of medical devices and associated infections. In order to reduce the risk of both endogenous and exogenous infections, infection control procedures must be implemented in general practice. Using a formulation containing alcohol alone or in combination with other agents to properly wash hands after each patient's checkup and before any procedure reduces the likelihood of transmitting infections to and from patients. Sterilization and disinfection are the most important aspects of infection control. The most common sterilization methods are steam sterilizers and ethylene dioxide sterilizers. Trash generated during practice should be handled according to protocol and rules, as it may be a source of nosocomial infections. Trained personnel are required to carry out these procedures.

BACKGROUND: Dementia presents a significant burden to patients and healthcare systems worldwide. Early and accurate diagnosis, as well as differential diagnosis of various types of dementia, are crucial for timely intervention and management. However, there is currently a lack of clinical tools for accurately distinguishing between these types. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the differences in the structural white matter (WM) network among different types of cognitive impairment/dementia using diffusion tensor imaging, and to explore the clinical relevance of the structural network. METHODS: A total of 21 normal control, 13 subjective cognitive decline (SCD), 40 mild cognitive impairment (MCI), 22 Alzheimer's disease (AD), 13 mixed dementia (MixD), and 17 vascular dementia (VaD) participants were recruited. Graph theory was utilized to construct the brain network. RESULTS: Our findings revealed a monotonic trend of disruption in the brain WM network (VaD > MixD > AD > MCI > SCD) in terms of decreased global efficiency, local efficiency, and average clustering coefficient, as well as increased characteristic path length. These network measurements were significantly associated with the clinical cognition index in each disease group separately. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that structural WM network measurements can be utilized to differentiate between different types of cognitive impairment/dementia, and these measurements can provide valuable cognition-related information.

Employee use of social media in the workplace has become a common phenomenon. Thus, how to effectively manage and utilize employee social media usage in the workplace has become a new issue. This study examines how employees' work-related and social-related social media usage at work can present different impacts upon their creativity through knowledge management behaviors. To test the research model, this study collected data from 425 employees in various industries in China and utilized a covariance-based structural equation model (CB-SEM) to test the hypotheses. The results suggested that work-related social media usage enhances employee creativity through promoting knowledge sharing and restraining knowledge manipulation. On the contrary, social-related social media usage cannot indirectly influence employee creativity through knowledge management behaviors. This study contributes to the literature on social media research by providing theoretical arguments on how employee use of social media for different purposes affects their creativity. Furthermore, this research offers the insight of the different paths of work-related and social-related social media usage that influence employee creativity rather than treating social media usage as a unitary concept and linking it simply with work results. This study also explores the role of three knowledge management behaviors in the relationship between social media usage and employee creativity.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most frequent cause of dementia, is a neurodegenerative disorder characterised by a progressive decline in cognitive function that is associated with the formation of amyloid beta plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Gut microbiota comprises of a complex community of microorganisms residing in the gastrointestinal ecosystem. These microorganisms can participate in gut-brain axis activities, thereby affecting cognitive function and associated behaviours. Increasing evidence has indicated that gut dysbiosis can jeopardise host immune responses and promote inflammation, which may be an initiating factor for the onset and evolution of AD. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a promising resource which encompasses immense chemical diversity and multiple-target characteristics for the treatment of AD. Many TCMs regulate the gut microbiota during treatment of diseases, indicating that gut microbiota may be an important target for TCM efficacy. In this review, we summarised the role of the microbiota-gut-brain axis in the development of AD and the effects of TCM in treating AD by regulating the gut microbiota. We anticipate that this review will provide novel perspectives and strategies for future AD research and treatments.
