RESUMO

Previous retrospective cohort studies have found that, compared with oxygen tension in the uterus and fallopian tubes (2 %-8 %), exposure of pre-implantation embryos to atmospheric oxygen tension (AtmO2, 20 %) during assisted reproductive technology(ART) can affect embryo quality, pregnancy outcomes and offspring health. However, current research on the effects and mechanisms of AtmO2 on the development of embryos and offspring is mainly limited to animal experiments. Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) play a special and irreplaceable role in the study of early human embryonic development. In this study, we used hESCs as a model to elucidate the possible effects and mechanisms of AtmO2 exposure on human embryonic development. We found that exposure to AtmO2 can reduce cell viability, produce oxidative stress, increase DNA damage, initiate DNA repair, activate autophagy, and increase cell apoptosis. We also noticed that approximately 50 % of hESCs survived, adapted and proliferated through high expression of self-renewal and pluripotency regulatory factors, and affected embryoid body differentiation. These data indicate that hESCs experience oxidative stress, accumulation of DNA damage, and activate DNA damage response under the selective pressure of AtmO2.Some hESCs undergo cell death, whereas other hESCs adapt and proliferate through increased expression of self-renewal genes. The current findings provide in vitro evidence that exposure to AtmO2 during the early preimplantation stage negatively affects hESCs.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with low-grade glioma (LGG) have a dismal prognosis, and most patients will eventually progress to high-grade disease. Therefore, it is crucial to accurately determine their prognoses. METHODS: Seventy-nine NK cell genes were downloaded from the LM22 database and univariate Cox regression analysis was utilized to detect NK cell-related genes affecting prognosis. Molecular types were established for LGG using the "ConsensusClusterPlus" R package. The results from a functional enrichment analysis and the immune microenvironment were intensively explored to determine molecular heterogeneity and immune characteristics across distinct subtypes. Furthermore, a RiskScore model was developed and verified using expression profiles of NK cells, and a nomogram consisting of the RiskScore model and clinical traits was constructed. Moreover, pan-cancer traits of NK cells were also investigated. RESULTS: The C1 subtype included the greatest amount of immune infiltration and the poorest prognosis among well-established subtypes. The majority of enriched pathways were those involved in tumor progression, including epithelial-mesenchymal transition and cell cycle pathways. Differentially expressed genes among distinct subtypes were determined and used to develop a novel RiskScore model. This model was able to distinguish low-risk patients with LGG from those with high-risk disease. An accurate nomogram including the RiskScore, disease grade and patient's age was constructed to predict clinical outcomes of LGG patients. Finally, a pan-cancer analysis further highlighted the crucial roles of NK cell-related genes in the tumor microenvironment. CONCLUSIONS: An NK cell-related RiskScore model can accurately predict the prognoses of patients with LGG and provide valuable insights into personalized medicine.

Temozolomide (TMZ) resistance is a major obstacle in glioma treatment. Nuclear protein-1 (NUPR1) is a regulator of glioma progression. This study investigated the mechanism of NUPR1 in TMZ resistance in hypoxia-treated glioma cells and its mechanism in modulating autophagy. We treated TMZ-resistant cells U251-TMZ and T98G-TMZ to normoxia or hypoxia and silenced NUPR1 in hypoxia-treated U251-TMZ and T98G-TMZ cells to assess cell viability, proliferation, apoptosis, LC3-II/LC3-I and p62 expressions, and autophagic flux under different concentrations of TMZ. We found that hypoxia upregulated NUPR1 expression and autophagy while NUPR1 silencing suppressed hypoxia-induced TMZ resistance and autophagy in glioma cells. We also investigated the interaction between NUPR1 and lysine demethylase 3A (KDM3A), as well as the enrichments of KDM3A and H3 lysine 9 dimethylation (H3K9me2) in the transcription factor EB (TFEB) promoter region. Our results suggest that hypoxia-induced NUPR1 promotes TFEB transcription by binding to KDM3A and reducing H3K9me2 levels, thereby augmenting glioma cell autophagy and TMZ resistance. Moreover, the overexpression of KDM3A or TFEB promoted glioma cell autophagy. In a xenograft tumor model, silencing NUPR1 suppressed TMZ resistance in glioma cells in vivo. Overall, our findings highlight a mechanism by which NUPR1 enhances glioma cell autophagy and TMZ resistance via the KDM3A/TFEB axis.

Cystic echinococcosis is caused by the larval stages (hydatids) of cestode parasites belonging to the species cluster Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato, with E. granulosus sensu stricto being the main infecting species. Hydatids are bladderlike structures that attain large sizes within various internal organs of livestock ungulates and humans. Hydatids are protected by the massive acellular laminated layer (LL), composed mainly of mucins. Parasite growth requires LL turnover, and abundant LL-derived particles are found at infection sites in infected humans, raising the question of how LL materials are dealt with by the hosts. In this article, we show that E. granulosus sensu stricto LL mucins injected into mice are taken up by Kupffer cells, the liver macrophages exposed to the vascular space. This uptake is largely dependent on the intact mucin glycans and on Clec4F, a C-type lectin receptor which, in rodents, is selectively expressed in Kupffer cells. This uptake mechanism operates on mucins injected both in soluble form intravenously (i.v.) and in particulate form intraperitoneally (i.p.). In mice harboring intraperitoneal infections by the same species, LL mucins were found essentially only at the infection site and in the liver, where they were taken up by Kupffer cells via Clec4F. Therefore, shed LL materials circulate in the host, and Kupffer cells can act as a sink for these materials, even when the parasite grows in sites other than the liver.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical efficacy between governor vessel moxibustion combined with warming acupuncture based on the supporting-yang theory and simple warming acupuncture for knee osteoarthritis (KOA) with yang deficiency and cold congelation. METHODS: A total of 64 patients with KOA of yang deficiency and cold congelation were randomized into a combination group (32 cases, 2 cases dropped off) and a warming acupuncture group (32 cases, 1 case dropped off). In the warming acupuncture group, warming acupuncture was applied at Zusanli (ST 36), Guanyuan (CV 4) and Dubi (ST 35), Neixiyan (EX-LE 4), etc. on the affected side, once a day. On the basis of the treatment in the warming acupuncture group, governor vessel moxibustion was applied in the combination group, once a week. The 14-day treatment was taken as one course, and totally 2 courses with 2-day interval were required in the two groups. The clinical symptom score, the visual analogue scale (VAS) score and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities arthritis index (WOMAC) score were observed before treatment, after treatment and in the follow-up of 12 weeks after treatment; the volume of suprapatellar bursa effusion was detected before and after treatment; the clinical efficacy was evaluated after treatment and in the follow-up in the two groups. RESULTS: After treatment and in the follow-up, the scores of clinical symptom, VAS and WOMAC were decreased compared before treatment in both groups (P<0.05), and those in the combination group were lower than the warming acupuncture group (P<0.05). After treatment, the volume of suprapatellar bursa effusion was decreased compared before treatment in both groups (P<0.05). After treatment and in the follow-up, the total effective rates were 93.3% (28/30) and 86.7% (26/30) in the combination group, which were superior to 87.1% (27/31) and 74.2% (23/31) in the warming acupuncture group respectively (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Governor vessel moxibustion combined with warming acupuncture can improve the clinical symptoms i.e. pain and dysfunction and reduce the volume of suprapatellar bursa effusion in KOA patients with yang deficiency and cold congelation, its short-term effect and long-term effect are both superior to simple warming acupuncture.

Increasing evidence has highlighted the critical functions of immunogenic cell death (ICD) within many tumors. However, the therapeutic possibilities and mechanism of utilizing ICD in melanoma are still not well investigated. Melanoma samples involved in our study were acquired from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases. First, pan-cancer analysis of ICD systematically revealed its expression characteristics, prognostic values, mutation information, methylation level, pathway regulation relationship in multiple human cancers. The non-negative matrix factorization clustering was utilized to separate the TCGA-melanoma samples into two subtypes (i.e. C1 and C2) with different prognosis and immune microenvironment based on the expression traits of ICD. Then, LASSO-Cox regression analysis was utilized to determine an ICD-dependent risk signature (ICDRS) based on the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the two subtypes. Principal component analysis and t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding analysis of ICDRS showed that high- and low-risk subpopulations could be clearly distinguished. Survival analysis and ROC curves in the training, internal validation, and external validation cohorts highlighted the accurate prognosis evaluation of ICDRS. The obvious discrepancies of immune microenvironment between the different risk populations might be responsible for the different prognoses of patients with melanoma. These findings revealed the close association of ICD with prognosis and tumor immune microenvironment. More importantly, ICDRS-based immunotherapy response and targeted drug prediction might be beneficial to different risk subpopulations of patients with melanoma. The innotative ICDRS could function as a marker to determine the prognosis and tumor immune microenvironment in melanoma. This will aid in patient classification for individualized melanoma treatment.

Background: Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is a rare B-cell lymphoma of central nervous system, which is often found in immunocompromised patients. The common clinical treatment of PCNSL is methotrexate (MTX) and whole brain radiation therapy. With the development of tumour immunology research, the tumour microenvironment of PCNSL is characterised by abnormal expression of different immune signature molecules and patients with PCNSL may benefit from tumour immunotherapy. Methods: In our research, RNA-seq data from 82 PCNSL patients were collated by mining the microarray data from the GEO database. All samples were classified into three types related to tumour immune response by the Cibersort algorithm and consistent clustering. Differential analysis of genes was used to uncover 2 sets of differential genes associated with tumour immunity. The ICI scores of each sample were obtained by PCA algorithm, and the relationship between ICI scores and immune checkpoint expression, immunotherapy and drug sensitivity was investigated. Genes associated with ICI scores and their functional characteristics were investigated by WGCNA analysis and PPI analysis, based on the ICI scores of each sample. Results: The tumour microenvironment in PCNSL has a greater relationship with the tumour immune response. ICI scores obtained from 375 differential genes were associated with multiple immune responses in PCNSL. PCNSL patients with higher ICI scores had a better tumour microenvironment and were sensitive to immunotherapy and some small molecule drug. This study also identified 64 genes associated with ICI scores, which may serve as important therapeutic and prognostic targets for PCNSL. Conclusion: The presence of multiple immunosuppressive responses in the tumour microenvironment of PCNSL which suggested that improving the immune function of PCNSL patients through immunotherapy and targeted therapies can be an effective treatment for PCNSL. And the ICI score and associated genes may also provide a better predictor of the clinical use of immunotherapy.

A scalable manufacturing protocol is developed to prepare polymer-based solvent-free all-solid flexible energy storage devices based on a two-roll mill and adapted rubber mixing technology. The as-prepared solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) consisting of commercial poly(methyl methacrylate)-grafted natural rubber (MG30) and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide achieve a superior ionic conductivity of 2.7 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 30 °C. The superior ionic conductivity is attributed to the formation of an ionic cluster network in the composite as proved by small-angle X-ray scattering and infrared spectroscopy measurements. Moreover, the as-prepared SPEs show good mechanical stability over a broad temperature range, that is , a storage modulus above 1 × 104 Pa from 30 to 120 °C as indicated by the rheology data. Furthermore, the SPEs were assembled with the carbon black-filled MG30 (i.e., MG30C) electrode into a flexible supercapacitor cell, which had a wide voltage window of 3.5 V, good energy density of 28.4 µW h·cm-2 at 160 °C, and good temperature tolerance up to 160 °C. This scaling-up manufacture strategy shows tremendous potential to the advancing of SPEs in applications of flexible energy storage device.

BACKGROUND: Determining a subdural hematoma (SDH) to be chronic by definition takes 3 wk, whereas organized chronic SDH (OCSDH) is an unusual condition that is believed to form over a much longer period of time, which generally demands large craniotomy. Therefore, it is a lengthy process from the initial head trauma, if any, to the formation of an OCSDH. Acute SDH (ASDH) with organization-like, membranaceous appearances has never been reported. CASE SUMMARY: A 56-year-old woman presented to our hospital with a seizure, and computed tomography (CT) on admission was negative for signs of intracranial hemorrhage. She had clear consciousness and unimpaired motor functions on arrival and remained stable for the following week, during which she underwent necessary examinations. On the morning of day 10 of hospitalization, she accidentally hit her head hard against the wall in the bathroom and promptly lapsed into complete coma within 2 h. Therefore, we performed emergency CT and identified a left supratentorial SDH that was an absolute indication for surgery. However, the intraoperative findings were surprising, with no liquefaction observed. Instead, a solid hematoma covered with a thick membrane was noted that strongly resembled an organized hematoma. Evacuation was successful, but the family stopped treatment the next day due to financial problems, and the patient soon died. CONCLUSION: Neurosurgeons should address SDHs, especially ASDHs, with discretion and individualization due to their highly diversified features.

Accumulating evidence reveals that ferroptosis and pyroptosis play pivotal roles in tumorigenesis of low-grade glioma (LGG). In this research, we aimed to classify molecular subtypes and further identify and verify a novel multigene signature in LGG on the basis of ferroptosis and pyroptosis-related genes (FPRGs). Raw sequencing data and corresponding clinical data of LGG samples retrieved from the TCGA and CGGA databases were obtained for the training and validation datasets. Non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) clustering defined by FPRGs associated with prognosis was performed to classify molecular subtypes of LGG patients. LASSO-SVM-Random Forest analysis was carried out to develop an FPRG signature to predict the survival and benefit of immunotherapy of LGG patients. NMF clustering defined by FPRGs with prognostic values acted to categorize LGG patients into two molecular subtypes with different prognosis, clinical traits and immune microenvironments. A six-FPRG prognostic signature was constructed, accompanied by the optimal p-value. The AUC values of our signature exhibited great prognostic performances. Our signature was superior to other four well-recognized signatures in predicting the survival probability of LGG patients. Immune characteristics, tumor mutation profile, tumor stemness indices, MGMT methylation and immunotherapy response biomarkers showed significant differences between high- and low-risk populations. Finally, a nomogram was created for quantitative prediction of the survival probability of LGG patients, with the AUC values of the nomogram being 0.916, 0.888 and 0.836 for 1-, 3- and 5-year survival, sequentially. Overall, the FPRG signature may function as an effective indicator for the prognosis prediction and immunotherapy response of LGG patients.

This work investigates the relationship of financial development with energy efficiency and economic growth. Due to the coexistence of economic expansion, trade openness, financial development, and urbanization in Indonesia and Turkey, these two countries are considered. Johansen cointegration, error correction, and Granger causality tests are applied to validate the predicted effects of economic activity on the environment. Results show a long-term relationship of Indonesia's CO2 emissions with five out of six macroeconomic factors, except for urbanization, which has a detrimental effect on carbon emissions. On the other hand, no cointegration across variables is found in the case of Turkey. However, unidirectional causality is observed from energy consumption and economic growth to economic growth. Furthermore, economic growth, energy consumption, and trade openness have a two-way causal effect on financial development. This work encourages Turkish and Indonesian policymakers and regulators to strengthen environmental laws. It also encourages other economies and governments to conduct similar analyses and determine the best course of action.

The aim of study is to estimate the role of energy financing for energy retrofit in COVID-19, with the intervening role of green bond financing. For this, Kalman technique is applied to infer the empirical findings. It is found that energy financing is significantly dependent on green bonds, and green bonds have a significant role in energy retrofit in E-7 economies specifically. It is further found that E-7 economies gained significant rise in energy efficiency financing green bonds financing, that has supportively extended energy retrofit - before and during COVID-19 crises. It is further found significant that the E-7 nations have to put alot of money into hydro and nuclear energy for energy retrofit, with low carbon emissions. In the light of COVID-19 crises, this study offers policy recommendations for effective energy management. However, such policy recommendations are expected to finely serve the financial intermediaries and national governments of E-7 economies to better optimize energy financing through green bond financing. The novelty of the study exists in topical framework and research directions, talking about the way forwards for energy efficiency financing - which is one of the latest issue of the recent times. Hence, this research provides some empirical verifications about energy financing in COVID-19 crises for energy retrofit, and shares some suggestions for stakeholders.

OBJECTIVE: Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is one of the most effective treatments for acute coronary syndrome (ACS). However, the need for postoperative revascularization remains a major problem in PCI. This study was to develop and validate a nomogram for prediction of revascularization after PCI in patients with ACS. METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted using data from 1083 patients who underwent PCI (≥6 months) at a single center from June 2013 to December 2019. They were divided into training (70%; n = 758) and validation (30%; n = 325) sets. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to establish a predictive model represented by a nomogram. The nomogram was developed and evaluated based on discrimination, calibration, and clinical efficacy using the concordance statistic (C-statistic), calibration plot and decision curve analysis (DCA), respectively. RESULTS: The nomogram was comprised of ten variables: follow-up time (odds ratio (OR): 1.01; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.00-1.03), history of diabetes mellitus (OR: 1.83; 95% CI: 1.25-2.69), serum creatinine level on admission (OR: 0.99; 95% CI: 0.98-1.00), serum uric acid level on admission (OR: 1.005; 95% CI: 1.002-1.007), lipoprotein-a level on admission (OR: 1.0021; 95% CI: 1.0013-1.0029), low density lipoprotein cholesterol level on re-admission (OR: 1.33; 95% CI: 0.10-0.47), the presence of chronic total occlusion (OR: 3.30; 95% CI: 1.93-5.80), the presence of multivessel disease (OR: 4.48; 95% CI: 2.85-7.28), the presence of calcified lesions (OR: 1.63; 95% CI: 1.11-2.39), and the presence of bifurcation lesions (OR: 1.82; 95% CI: 1.20-2.77). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values for the training and validation sets were 0.765 (95% CI: 0.732-0.799) and 0.791 (95% CI: 0.742-0.830), respectively. The calibration plots showed good agreement between prediction and observation in both the training and validation sets. DCA also demonstrated that the nomogram was clinically useful. CONCLUSION: We developed an easy-to-use nomogram model to predict the risk of revascularization after PCI in patients with ACS. The nomogram may provide useful assessment of risk for subsequent treatment of ACS patients undergoing PCI.

To maintain the quality of postharvest fruits continuously and meet the health requirements of consumers, a high barrier and long-lasting antibacterial polylactic acid film as packaging material was developed in this study. Polylactic acid-based antibacterial films incorporated with Cinnamaldehyde inclusions were used to achieve long-lasting antibacterial activity and improve the barrier properties. Cinnamaldehyde inclusions were prepared via the inclusion method and used as a sustained-release antibacterial agent and reinforcement to be incorporated into polylactic acid-based films within a concentration range of 0-30 wt%. The FT-IR spectrum demonstrated that the Cinnamaldehyde inclusions was physically interacting with PLA. The XRD results showed that the cinnamaldehyde inclusions at a concentration of 10 wt% enhanced the crystallinity of the antibacterial film. The oxygen and water vapor barrier properties of the film were respectively 14.29% and 12.38% higher than those of a pure PLA film. The tensile strength of the antibacterial film increased by 20%. And the antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes was 100%. The release rate of cinnamaldehyde of the antibacterial film was slow and varied smoothly for 20 d.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical effect between warming acupuncture combined with moxibustion at Yongquan (KI 1) and simple warming acupuncture for knee osteoarthritis with kidney-marrow deficiency. METHODS: A total of 66 patients of knee osteoarthritis with kidney-marrow deficiency were randomized into an observation group and a control group, 33 cases in each one. Warming acupuncture was applied at Neixiyan (EX-LE 4), Dubi (ST 35), Zusanli (ST 36) and Xuanzhong (GB 39) on the affected side in both of the groups. In the observation group, mild moxibustion at bilateral Yongquan (KI 1) was adopted additionally. Each treatment lasted for 30 min, 3 times a week (once every other day), and the consecutive 6 weeks of treatment were required. The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) score (such as joint pain, stiffness and physical function), the amount of joint effusion and the serum contents of interleukin-1ß(IL-1ß), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were observed before and after treatment in the two groups. RESULTS: The total effective rate in the observation group was 93.3% (28/30), which was superior to 87.1% (27/30) in the control group (P<0.05). Compared before treatment, the pain scores, stiffness scores, physical function scores, the amount of joint effusion and the contents of IL-1ß, TNF-α and hs-CRP after treatment were significantly reduced in the two groups (P<0.05), and the improvements of these indices in the observation group were superior to the control group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Warming acupuncture combined with moxibustion at Yongquan (KI 1) can improve joint function, reduce the amount of joint effusion and the contents of inflammatory response indices for knee osteoarthritis with kidney-marrow deficiency. The therapeutic effect of warming acupuncture combined with moxibustion at Yongquan (KI 1) is better than simple warming acupuncture.

microRNA (miRNA/miR)-30a, a tumor-associated miRNA, has been implicated in the tumorigenesis and progression of different types of human cancer. Thyroid cancer is a common endocrine malignancy, of which papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) accounts for ~80-90% of all TC. However, the effect of miR-30a in PTC is yet to be fully elucidated. The TPC-1 human PTC cell line, as well as the normal human thyroid cell line (HT-ori3), were utilized in the current study. The PTC cell line was transfected with a miR-30a mimic. Subsequently, reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction was performed to detect the expression of miR-30a and E2F transcription factor 7 (E2F7). Cell proliferation was assessed via a MTT assay and transwell migration and invasion assays were performed to detect the migration and invasion of PTC cells. A dual-luciferase reporter assay was also utilized to clarify the association between miR-30a and E2F7. The results of the current study revealed that miR-30a was significantly downregulated in TPC-1 cells compared with HT-ori3 cells and that the expression of E2F7 was significantly upregulated in PTC cells. The upregulation of miR-30a also inhibited the proliferation, migration and invasion of PTC cells. Furthermore, the luciferase assay revealed that miR-30a binds to the 3'-UTR of E2F7. Additionally, the overexpression of miR-30a decreased E2F7 levels in TPC-1 cells. These results indicate that miR-30a functions as a tumor suppressor in PTC by direct targeting E2F7 and that miR-30a may be a novel therapeutic target for patients with PTC.

In this study, fresh mangos were packed using a custom-made antimicrobial film coated with sustained-release chlorine dioxide microcapsules. We then compared physical and chemical indexes, such as weight loss rate, firmness, chromatic aberrations, soluble solids, vitamin C, titratable acid, and other nutritional indicators, to examine changes in the mango and film during storage. Our findings revealed that control mango showed loss of edible value and commercial value after 21 days of storage, and the chlorine dioxide microcapsule antibacterial film group still retains food value and commercial value. Cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy images of the used film showed that the polylactic acid film was smooth and flat, whereas cross-sections of the antimicrobial film showed that the film was covered with voids due to deliberate release of chlorine dioxide gas during the packaging process. Thus, the antibacterial film exhibited erosion and degradation. These findings provided important insights into the use of antimicrobial films for the packaging of fruits during storage, which is essential for promoting the application of solid chlorine dioxide antimicrobial film in packaging preservation.

Type II diabetes-induced ischemic injuries are known to lead to the rapid degeneration of the kidneys as a result of chronic renal failure. Chronic renal failure is a condition, which typically manifests with symptoms including cardiovascular system and left ventricular hypertrophy, atherosclerosis as well as arterial and aortic stiffness. Resveratrol is a multifunctional compound that has been reported to produce beneficial outcomes for patients with type-II diabetes due to prevention of oxidative stress and apoptosis. However, the beneficial effects of resveratrol in chronic renal failure and the underlying mechanisms have remained to be fully elucidated. The present study investigated the therapeutic effects of resveratrol in mice with chronic renal failure induced by type-II diabetes and assessed the mechanism of action. Oxidative stress, apoptosis and adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in the renal cells of the model mice were assessed. Changes in inflammatory factors renal cells from experimental mice as well as insulin resistance were also analyzed. Morphological changes and immunocytes in renal cells were determined by immunostaining. The results demonstrated that resveratrol treatment decreased the apoptotic rate of renal cells from experimental mice. Oxidative stress also improved in renal cells, as indicated by inhibition of superoxide dismutase and reduced glutathione and 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal levels. In addition, insulin resistance was improved after an 8-week treatment with resveratrol. Inflammatory factors were decreased and factors promoting kidney function were increased after resveratrol treatment. Furthermore, morphological changes were observed to be ameliorated, indicating the therapeutic efficacy of resveratrol. In addition, immunocyte precipitation in renal cells was markedly decreased in resveratrol-treated mice. Importantly, the AMPK signaling pathway was found to be involved in the beneficial effect of resveratrol on the model mice. In conclusion, the present study suggested that resveratrol may be an ideal agent for the treatment of chronic renal failure induced by type-II diabetes through regulation of the AMPK signaling pathway, which should be further investigated in clinical trials.
