RESUMO

We experimentally and theoretically investigate the influence of alumina coating on the second-harmonic generation (SHG) from split-ring resonator shaped air apertures engraved in a gold film, which are also termed as complementary split-ring resonators (CSRRs). By coating the CSRR arrays with alumina film of certain thickness, we precisely tune their electric diploe resonances (EDRs) to overlap the fundamental wavelength (FW) and realize the EDR enhanced SHG process. On this basis, by shortening the arm length of the CSRRs and then coating them with a certain thickness of the alumina film, we have achieved an SHG enhancement of nearly 1.2-fold in experiment and 8-fold in simulation compared to the CSRR array with an unshortened arm length. We attributed it to the improvement of the magnitude of the effective nonlinear source due to the realization of a doubly-resonant condition. As a flexible method, dielectric coating not only is beneficial to precisely and dynamically optimize the linear and nonlinear properties of the as-fabricated nanoscale devices but also can play the role of a protective layer, which can partially improve the damage threshold of these plasmonic nanoscale devices.

RESUMO

Sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis (SEP) is a disease that is rarely encountered clinically. Preoperative diagnosis of SEP can be difficult. However, with imaging technology, such as computed tomography (CT), this condition can be diagnosed without surgery and pathological analysis. SEP is characterized by small intestine being partially or completely encased by a layer of a thick grayish-white fibrocollagenous membrane similar to a cocoon. The most common symptoms of SEP are abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. SEP often leads to intestinal obstruction. Our hospital treated three emergency patients who complained of acute or chronic abdominal pain. CT showed "cauliflower sign" in two cases. The three patients were diagnosed with SEP intraoperatively. In a female patient with ascites, the situation was extremely serious, and this condition had not been reported in detail previously. Fortunately, all patients were discharged without complications. We should pay special attention to patients with SEP who have ascites, which indicates a serious situation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: In this research, we explored the effect of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) AOC4P on gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The expression of lncRNA AOC4P in tissues was detected by real-time PCR (RT-PCR). The epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related proteins in tissues were analyzed by Western blot. The experiment included negative control group (CN), silence AOC4P group (si AOC4P), and silence negative control group (si CT). RT-PCR, MTT, Scratch, Transwell, and Annexin V-FITC methods were used to detect the expression of lncRNA AOC4P, cell proliferation, cell migration ability, cell invasion ability, and apoptosis, respectively. The EMT-related proteins including TGF-ß, ZEB1, Vimentin, Snail, and E-cadherin were analyzed by Western blot. RESULTS: The expression of lncRNA AOC4P and the expression of EMT-related proteins in high-risk GISTs were higher than that in low- and intermediate-risk GISTs (P<0.05). It was revealed that cell proliferative migration and invasive ability in si AOC4P group was decreased than that in CN and si CT groups (P<0.05), and cell apoptosis in si AOC4P group was higher than that in si CT group. The results of Western blot demonstrated that the expression of TGF-ß1, ZEB1, Vimentin, and Snail in si AOC4P group were lower than that in si CT and CN group (P<0.05), and the expression of E-cadherin in si AOC4P group was higher than that in si CT and CN group (P<0.05).

RESUMO

Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) is a divergent member of the transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) superfamily that has been associated with colorectal cancers (CRC). However, the role of GDF15 in the progression of CRC remains unknown. We demonstrated that GDF15 expression was higher in fresh CRC tissues than in adjacent normal tissues. Moreover, we found that GDF15 overexpression significantly facilitated cell viability, cell invasion and migration (p < .01 or p < .05). The protein expression of N-cadherin, vimentin and Twist1 were up-regulated by GDF15 overexpression, while E-cadherin was down-regulated. Reciprocally, using a GDF15-shRNA strategy, we observed that GDF15 downregulation inhibited both basal and GDF16-induced cell viability, invasion and migration in LoVo cells. In conclusion, GDF15 could promote cell viability, invasion and migration of LoVo cells through EMT induction.

RESUMO

We propose a novel plasmonic Bragg reflector (PBR) based on graphene with multiple-step silicon structure. The monolayer graphene bears locally variable optical properties by modulation of electric fields, and the periodical change of effective refractive index on graphene can be obtained by external bias voltage in the mid-infrared region. Through patterning the PBR units into multiple-step structures, we can decrease the insertion loss and suppress the rippling in transmission spectra. By introducing the defect into the multiple-step PBRs, the multiple resonance modes are formed inside the stopband by increasing the step number. This work may pave the ways for the further development of ultra-compact low-cost hyperspectral sensors in the mid-infrared region.

RESUMO

Gastric carcinoma is one of the major causes of cancer mortality worldwide. There is a better prognosis for patients with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated gastric carcinoma (EBVaGC) compared with those with EBV negative gastric carcinoma (EBVnGC). It is partly due to the fact that EBV infection recruits lymphocytes infiltrating the tumor. It has been reported that this infection indeed resulted in the changes in immune response genes and thus preventing the development of tumor. It is worthwhile to do a systematic study of EBVaGC and EBVnGC based on genetic characteristics and pathways. In this study, we investigated the information of gene ontology (GO) and KEGG pathway annotations to characterize EBVaGC and EBVnGC-related genes. By applying minimum redundancy maximum relevance (mRMR) algorithm, we provided an optimal set of features for identifying the EBVaGC and EBVnGC. We also employed the shortest path algorithm to probe the novel EBVaGC- and EBVnGC-related genes based on the interaction network of genes that differently expressed in them respectively. We obtained 1039 and 1003 features to identify these two types of gastric carcinoma respectively. Based on the optimal features of classification, we predicted 1881 and 2475 novel genes as additional candidates to support clinical research respectively for these two types of gastric cancers. We compared the differences and similarities of molecular traits between EBVaGC and EBVnGC, which would facilitate the understanding of gastric cancer and its therapy and was thus clinically relevant.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinicopathological features and prognosis of patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumor(GIST) after surgery in Shandong Province. METHODS: Clinicopathological data of GIST patients undergoing surgery from January 2001 to June 2013 in four university teaching hospitals in Shandong Province were reviewed. Pathology results were rechecked. Patients were followed up. The prognostic factors were evaluated by univariate and multivariate analyses with Log-rank test and Cox proportional hazard model. RESULTS: A total of 1039 GIST cases were enrolled, including 509 males and 530 females, with age from 18 to 87 years(median, 58). Ninety-three patients died of GIST during follow-up. The 1-, 3-, 5-year survival rates were 94.6%, 91.7% and 87.8%, respectively. Patients undergoing R0 resection had a higher 5-year overall survival rate than those undergoing R1 resection(88.8% vs 69.0%, P<0.05). For patients with intermediate risk of recurrence after surgery, the 5-year overall survival rate was 94.4% and 89.2% respectively in imatinib and non-imatinib intervention groups(P>0.05). For patients with high risk of recurrence after surgery, the 5-year overall survival rate was 76.8% and 67.7% respectively(P<0.05). Multivariate analysis revealed that tumor size(P<0.01, RR=1.988, 95%CI:1.497-2.641), mitotic count(P<0.01, RR=2.326, 95%CI:1.686-3.208) and tumor rupture(P<0.01, RR=3.032, 95%CI:1.732-5.308) were independent prognostic factors. CONCLUSIONS: Tumor size, mitotic count and tumor rupture affect the prognosis of patients after resection of primary GIST independently. The standard treatment of localized GIST is R0 resection. Adjuvant imatinib therapy can improve overall survival of patients with high risk of recurrence after surgery. The efficacy of imatinib for patients with intermediate risk of recurrence remains to be verified.
