RESUMO

Glomerella leaf spot (GLS), caused by Colletotrichum fructicola (Cf), has been one of the main fungal diseases afflicting apple-producing areas across the world for many years, and it has led to substantial reductions in apple output and quality. HD-Zip transcription factors have been identified in several species, and they are involved in the immune response of plants to various types of biotic stress. In this study, inoculation of MdHB-7 overexpressing (MdHB-7-OE) and interference (MdHB-7-RNAi) transgenic plants with Cf revealed that MdHB-7, which encodes an HD-Zip transcription factor, adversely affects GLS resistance. The SA content and the expression of SA pathway-related genes were lower in MdHB-7-OE plants than in 'GL-3' plants; the content of ABA and the expression of ABA biosynthesis genes were higher in MdHB-7-OE plants than in 'GL-3' plants. Further analysis indicated that the content of phenolics and chitinase and ß-1, 3 glucanase activities were lower and H2O2 accumulation was higher in MdHB-7-OE plants than in 'GL-3' plants. The opposite patterns were observed in MdHB-7-RNAi apple plants. Overall, our results indicate that MdHB-7 plays a negative role in regulating defense against GLS in apple, which is likely achieved by altering the content of SA, ABA, polyphenols, the activities of defense-related enzymes, and the content of H2O2.

Particle dispersed coatings with gradient distributions, resulting from either gravity or artificial control, are frequently encountered in practical applications. However, most current studies investigating the optical properties of coatings use the uniform model (uniform single layer assumption), overlooking the gradient distribution effects. Given the pervasiveness of gradient distributions and the widespread use of the uniform model, it is imperative to evaluate applicability conditions of the uniform model in practical applications. In this work, we comprehensively investigate the quantitative performance of the uniform model in predicting the infrared optical properties of coatings with gradient distributions of particle volume fraction using the superposition T-matrix method. The results show that the gradient distribution of particle volume fraction has a limited impact on the emissivity properties of T i O 2-PDMS coatings in the midwavelength-infrared (MWIR) and long-wavelength-infrared (LWIR) bands, which validates the uniform model for the gradient coatings with weakly scattering dielectric particles. However, the uniform model can yield significant inaccuracies in estimating the emissivity properties of Al-PDMS coatings with gradient distributions in the MWIR and LWIR bands. To accurately estimate the emissivity of such gradient coatings with the scattering metallic particles, meticulous modeling of the particle volume fraction distribution is essential.

Extinction and attenuation by particles in an absorbing host have suffered a long-lasting controversy, which has impeded the physical insights on the radiative transfer in the voids dispersed composite. In this paper, we outline the existing extinction definitions, including an equivalence theorem neglecting the host absorption, the near-field analytical definition neglecting the far-field effects, and the operational way which simulates the actual detector readings. It is shown that, under the independent scattering approximation, the generalized operational definition is equivalent to a recent effective medium method according to the rigorous theory of multiple scattering. Using this generalized extinction, we show the important influences of the host absorption on the void extinction. Specifically, at the void resonance, the extinction cross sections of the small voids can be positive, zero, and even negative, which is regulated quantitively by host absorption. Considering the voids in SiC or Ag, the intriguing properties are verified through the attenuation coefficient calculated by the Maxwell-Garnett effective medium theory. In contrast, the equivalent theorem cannot describe any void resonance structures in the absorbing media. Also, the near-field definition fails to generate negative extinction and cannot thus describe the diminished total absorption by the voids. Our results might provide a better understanding of complex scattering theory in absorbing media.

RESUMO

Primary angiitis of the central nervous system (PACNS) is a rare and fatal cerebral vasculitis mainly involving the arteriole of the pia mater, cerebral cortex, and spinal cord. It has an insidious onset atypical symptoms. In this paper, we reported an unexpected death due to cerebral hemorrhage caused by PACNS. According to the typical clinical manifestations (headache, dizziness, weakness of the limbs, temporary blurred vision, etc.) and pathological examination (wide degeneration and fibrinoid necrosis of blood vessel walls with inflammatory cell infiltration), as well as hematoxylin-eosin staining, immunohistochemistry for CD15 + and gram staining, we finally determined that the patient died due to cerebral vascular rupture and hemorrhage caused by PACNS. This case illustrates the value and key points of autopsy in evaluating sudden deaths.

The scattering of guided waves propagating through pipe bends is studied by means of normal mode expansion. First, the bi-orthogonality relationship for normal modes in pipe bends is derived, based on which the displacement and stress fields at the interfaces between the straight and curved parts are expanded with the normal modes in both parts. Then, based on the displacement and stress field continuity principle, the scattering problem is regarded as an eigenproblem of a transfer matrix, the solution of which gives the mode conversions at the interfaces. A case study is presented of the low-frequency longitudinal mode incident on a pipe bend, and it is found that the dominant mode conversions are L(0,1) reflection and mode conversion from L(0,1) to F(1,1). Finite element simulations and experiments are also conducted. L(0,1) bend reflection and mode-converted F(1,1) are clearly observed, which agrees well with the theoretical predictions.

Extinction of small metallic spheres has been well understood through the classical Mie theory when the host medium is dispersive and transparent. However, the role of host dissipation on the particulate extinction remains a competition between the enhancing and reducing effects on the localized surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR). Here, using a generalized Mie theory, we elaborate on the specific influence mechanisms of host dissipation on the extinction efficiency factors of a plasmonic nanosphere. To this end, we isolate the dissipative effects by comparing the dispersive and dissipative host with its dissipationless counterpart. As a result, we identify the damping effects of host dissipation on the LSPR including the resonance widening and amplitude reducing. The resonance positions are shifted by host dissipation, which cannot be predicted by the classical Fröhlich condition. Finally, we demonstrate that a wideband extinction enhancement due to host dissipation can be realized away from the positions of the LSPR.

BACKGROUND: Epigenetic changes of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) have been reported to be a relevant factor in tumorigenesis and cancer progression. However, the molecular mechanisms responsible for DNA methylation patterns in the tumor immune-infiltrating microenvironment and in cancer immunotherapy remain unclear. METHODS: We conducted a global analysis of the DNA methylation modification pattern (DMP) and immune cell-infiltrating characteristics of LUAD patients based on 21 DNA methylation regulators. A DNA methylation score (DMS) system was constructed to quantify the DMP model in each patient and estimate their potential benefit from immunotherapy. RESULTS: Two DNA methylation modification patterns able to distinctly characterize the immune microenvironment characterization were identified among 513 LUAD samples. A lower DMS, characterized by increased CTLA-4/PD-1/L1 gene expression, greater methylation modifications, and tumor mutation burden, characterized a noninflamed phenotype with worse survival. A higher DMS, characterized by decreased methylation modification, a greater stromal-relevant response, and immune hyperactivation, characterized an inflamed phenotype with better prognosis. Moreover, a lower DMS indicated an increased mutation load and exhibited a poor immunotherapeutic response in the anti-CTLA-4/PD-1/PD-L1 cohort. CONCLUSION: Evaluating the DNA methylation modification pattern of LUAD patients could enhance our understanding of the features of tumor microenvironment characterization and may promote more favorable immunotherapy strategies.

This paper focuses on passive emitter localization using moving sensors. The increase in observation time is beneficial to improve the localization accuracy, but it could cause deterioration of the relative motion between the emitter and the sensors, especially the nonlinear motion. The common localization algorithms typically have two steps: (1) parameter estimation and (2) position determination, where the parameters are assumed to be constant, and it is not applicable for long observation times. We proposed the time-varying delay-based direct position determination (DPD-TVD) method, regarding the variation in the propagation time delay during the observation time. Using one step, the proposed algorithm can obtain the emitter's position directly from the received signals by calculating the cost function corresponding to the map grid. By better adapting to highly dynamic scenarios, the proposed algorithm can achieve better localization accuracy than that of constant parameters using one-step or two-step procedures, which is demonstrated by the simulation results.
