AIMS: Understanding the neural mechanisms underlying stroke recovery is critical to determine effective interventions for stroke rehabilitation. This study aims to systematically explore how recovery mechanisms post-stroke differ between individuals with different levels of functional integrity of the ipsilesional corticomotor pathway and motor function. METHODS: Eighty-one stroke survivors and 15 age-matched healthy adults participated in this study. We used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), electroencephalography (EEG), and concurrent TMS-EEG to investigate longitudinal neurophysiological changes post-stroke, and their relationship with behavioral changes. Subgroup analysis was performed based on the presence of paretic motor evoked potentials and motor function. RESULTS: Functional connectivity was increased dramatically in low-functioning individuals without elicitable motor evoked potentials (MEPs), which showed a positive effect on motor recovery. Functional connectivity was increased gradually in higher-functioning individuals without elicitable MEP during stroke recovery and influence from the contralesional hemisphere played a key role in motor recovery. In individuals with elicitable MEPs, negative correlations between interhemispheric functional connectivity and motor function suggest that the influence from the contralesional hemisphere may be detrimental to motor recovery. CONCLUSION: Our results demonstrate prominent clinical implications for individualized stroke rehabilitation based on both functional integrity of the ipsilesional corticomotor pathway and motor function.

Background: Intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) is a promising noninvasive therapy to restore the excitability of the cortex, and subsequently improve the function of the upper extremities. Several studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of iTBS in restoring upper limb function and modulating cortical excitability. We aimed to evaluate the effects of iTBS on upper limb motor recovery after stroke. Objective: The purpose of this article is to evaluate the influence of intermittent theta-burst stimulation on upper limb motor recovery and improve the quality of life. Method: A literature search was conducted using PubMed, EMBASE, MEDLINE, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and CBM, including only English studies, to identify studies that investigated the effects of iTBS on upper limb recovery, compared with sham iTBS used in control groups. Effect size was reported as standardized mean difference (SMD) or weighted mean difference (WMD). Results: Ten studies were included in the meta-analysis. The results of the meta-analysis indicated that when compared to the control group, the iTBS group had a significant difference in the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) and Action Research Arm Test (ARAT) (WMD: 3.20, 95% CI: 1.42 to 4.97; WMD: 3.72, 95% CI: 2.13 to 5.30, respectively). In addition, there was also a significant improvement in the modified Ashworth scale (MAS) compared to the sham group (WMD: -0.56; 95% CI: -0.85 to -0.28). More evidence is still needed to confirm the effect of Barthel Index (BI) scores after interventions. However, no significant effect was found for the assessment of Motor Evoked Potential (MEP) amplitude and MEP latency (SMD: 0.35; 95% CI: -0.21 to 0.90; SMD: 0.35, 95% CI: -0.18 to 0.87; SMD: 0.03, 95% CI: -0.49 to 0.55; respectively). Conclusion: Our results showed that iTBS significantly improved motor impairment, functional activities, and reduced muscle tone of upper limbs, thereby increasing the ability to perform Activities of Daily Living (ADL) in stroke patients, while there were no significant differences in MEPs. In conclusion, iTBS is a promising non-invasive brain stimulation as an adjunct to therapy and enhances the therapeutic effect of conventional physical therapy. In the future, more randomized controlled trials with large sample sizes, high quality, and follow-up are necessary to explore the neurophysiological effects. Diet plays an important role in health. A high intake of plant chemicals such as glucosinolates/isothiocyanates can promote optimal health and decrease the risk of cancer. Recent research has discovered more novel mechanisms of action for the effects of isothiocyanates including the modulation of tumor microenvironment, the inhibition of the self-renewal of stem cells, the rearrangement of multiple pathways of energy metabolism, the modulation of microbiota, and protection against Helicobacter pylori. However, the hormetic/biphasic effects of isothiocyanates may make the recommendations complicated. Isothiocyanates possess potent anti-cancer activities based on up-to-date evidence from in vitro and in vivo studies. The nature of hormesis suggests that the benefits or risks of isothiocyanates largely depend on the dose and endpoint of interest. Isothiocyanates are a promising class of cancer-preventative phytochemicals, but researchers should be aware of the potential adverse (and hormetic) effects. In the authors' opinion, dietary isothiocyanates are better used as adjunctive treatments in combination with known anti-cancer drugs. The application of nano-formulations and the delivery of isothiocyanates are also discussed in this review.

In this paper, the influences of biochar on the anaerobic digestion of sulphate wastewater, including the COD removal rate, methane yield, intermediate products and the change of microbial community structure, were investigated. The results showed that sulphate could promote the anaerobic digestion with the SO42-/COD ratio increasing from 0 to 0.1, while the activity of MPB was inhibited, which led to the decrease of COD removal rate and methane yield with the SO42-/COD ratio increasing from 0.1 to 2. At 1 g biochar loading, 344.97 mL CH4/gCODremoval was obtained compared with the control group (220.70 CH4/gCODremoval) at 2 of SO42-/COD. Biochar could also reduce the secondary accumulation of NH4+-N and TVFA. Meanwhile, methanogenic microorganisms were selectively enriched especially for methanobacterium, methanosaeta and methanolinea, while the growth of SRB was inhibited with biochar addition.

In recent years, China's industrial economy has grown rapidly and steadily. Concurrently, carbon emissions have gradually increased, among which agricultural production is an important source of greenhouse gas emissions. It is necessary to reduce agricultural carbon emissions by improving their efficiency to achieve the global goal of peak carbon dioxide emissions in 2030. From a dynamic and static point of view, this study puts agricultural carbon emissions into the evaluation index system of agricultural carbon emission efficiency and analyzes the agricultural carbon emission efficiency and its influencing factors in Hubei Province. First, the unexpected output Slacks-based measure (SBM) model in data envelopment analysis was used to evaluate the agricultural carbon emission efficiency of Hubei Province in 2018 and compared it with other provinces horizontally. Second, the Malmquist-Luenberger index was used to analyze the comprehensive efficiency of agricultural carbon emissions in Hubei Province from 2004 to 2018. The role of technological progress and technical efficiency change in the development of low-carbon agriculture in Hubei Province was analyzed. The results showed that agricultural production efficiency in Hubei Province improved from 2004 to 2018, and the overall level was slightly higher than the average level in China. However, agriculture has not eliminated the extensive development modes of high input, low efficiency, high emission, and high pollution. The efficiency of technological progress in agricultural resource utilization in Hubei Province was close to the optimal level. The improvement space was small. Hence, the low efficiency of agricultural technology is a key factor restricting the improvement of agricultural production efficiency. The results provide a reference for low-carbon agricultural policy formulation and expand the policy choice path. This has practical significance.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of patients in a minimally conscious state (MCS) remains challenging. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive therapeutic method in treating neurologic diseases by regulating the cortical excitability. The aim is to investigate the effect of tDCS in patients with MCS in this study. METHODS: Eleven patients in MCS were enrolled in the study. All the patients received 5 daily sessions of 20-min sham tDCS, followed by 10 sessions of 20-min real tDCS. The anodal electrode and cathodal electrodes were placed over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and the right eyebrow, respectively. Assessment of Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R) scores and resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) scans was conducted three times in each patient: before tDCS (baseline, T0), post-sham tDCS at week 1 (T1), and post-real tDCS at week 2 (T2). The whole-brain functional connectivity (FC) was obtained by bilaterally computing FC from six seed regions: precuneus, middle frontal gyrus, supplemental motor area, angular gyrus, superior temporal gyrus, and occipital lobe. One-way repeated measure ANOVA was used to compare the differences of CRS-R scores and FC at T0, T1, and T2. The false discovery rate correction of p < 0.001 was adopted for controlling multiple comparisons in FC analysis. RESULTS: Five patients with MCS showed obvious clinical improvement represented by increased CRS-R scores post- 2-week real tDCS. The CRS-R scores did not change post- 1-week sham treatment. No side effects were reported during the study. The FC of the bilateral supplementary motor area, right angular gyrus, and right superior temporal gyrus were significantly enhanced after 2-week real tDCS compared with that after 1-week sham-tDCS. In addition, FC of bilateral occipital lobe and right precuneus were significantly enhanced post- 2-week real tDCS compared with the baseline. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicated that tDCS over DLPFC could serve as a potentially effective therapy for improving the consciousness state in patients with MCS. The FC in rs-fMRI can be modulated by tDCS at both the stimulation site (left DLPFC) and the distant regions.

OBJECTIVE: Intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) has been widely used as a neural modulation approach in stroke rehabilitation. Concurrent use of transcranial magnetic stimulation and electroencephalography (TMS-EEG) offers a chance to directly measure cortical reactivity and oscillatory dynamics and allows for investigating neural effects induced by iTBS in all stroke survivors including individuals without recordable MEPs. Here, we used TMS-EEG to investigate aftereffects of iTBS following stroke. METHODS: We studied 22 stroke survivors (age: 65.2 ± 11.4 years; chronicity: 4.1 ± 3.5 months) with upper limb motor deficits. Upper-extremity component of Fugl-Meyer motor function assessment and action research arm test were used to measure motor function of stroke survivors. Stroke survivors were randomly divided into two groups receiving either Active or Sham iTBS applied over the ipsilesional primary motor cortex. TMS-EEG recordings were performed at baseline and immediately after Active or Sham iTBS. Time and time-frequency domain analyses were performed for quantifying TMS-evoked EEG responses. RESULTS: At baseline, natural frequency was slower in the ipsilesional compared with the contralesional hemisphere (P = 0.006). Baseline natural frequency in the ipsilesional hemisphere was positively correlated with upper limb motor function following stroke (P = 0.007). After iTBS, natural frequency in the ipsilesional hemisphere was significantly increased (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to investigate the acute neural adaptations after iTBS in stroke survivors using TMS-EEG. Our results revealed that natural frequency is altered following stroke which is related to motor impairments. iTBS increases natural frequency in the ipsilesional motor cortex in stroke survivors. Our findings implicate that iTBS holds the potential to normalize natural frequency in stroke survivors, which can be utilized in stroke rehabilitation.

Objective: Intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) is a special form of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), which effectively increases cortical excitability and has been widely used as a neural modulation approach in stroke rehabilitation. As effects of iTBS are typically investigated by motor evoked potentials, how iTBS influences functional brain network following stroke remains unclear. Resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) has been suggested to be a sensitive measure for evaluating effects of rTMS on brain functional activity and network. Here, we used resting-state EEG to investigate the effects of iTBS on functional brain network in stroke survivors. Methods: We studied thirty stroke survivors (age: 63.1 ± 12.1 years; chronicity: 4.0 ± 3.8 months; UE FMA: 26.6 ± 19.4/66) with upper limb motor dysfunction. Stroke survivors were randomly divided into two groups receiving either Active or Sham iTBS over the ipsilesional primary motor cortex. Resting-state EEG was recorded at baseline and immediately after iTBS to assess the effects of iTBS on functional brain network. Results: Delta and theta bands interhemispheric functional connectivity were significantly increased after Active iTBS (P = 0.038 and 0.011, respectively), but were not significantly changed after Sham iTBS (P = 0.327 and 0.342, respectively). Delta and beta bands global efficiency were also significantly increased after Active iTBS (P = 0.013 and 0.0003, respectively), but not after Sham iTBS (P = 0.586 and 0.954, respectively). Conclusion: This is the first study that used EEG to investigate the acute neuroplastic changes after iTBS following stroke. Our findings for the first time provide evidence that iTBS modulates brain network functioning in stroke survivors. Acute increase in interhemispheric functional connectivity and global efficiency after iTBS suggest that iTBS has the potential to normalize brain network functioning following stroke, which can be utilized in stroke rehabilitation.

Sulforaphane (SFN), a potent nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) activator, presents a potential role in improving Alzheimer's disease (AD)-specific symptoms. However, the regulation mechanism of SFN in AD is poorly understood. Here, we established AD models both in vitro and in vivo. Animal behaviors were tested by the Morris water maze test. The pathology of the hippocampus and the content of Aß were detected. SFN (40 mg kg-1) decreased the escape latency (24.96 ± 7.43 s) and increased the target-zone frequency (3.19 ± 1.19) in rats. SFN improved the pathological morphology and the number of neurons in the hippocampus. Additionally, SFN significantly upregulated the contents of thioredoxin and glutathione as well as the activities of antioxidant enzymes, along with the expression of the Nrf2 protein. Conversely, SFN lowered the Aß content and ROS level in N2a/APP cells. After silencing the Nrf2 by SiRNA, the inhibitory effects of SFN on ROS and Aß production were partially weakened. In conclusion, the improvement of AD by SFN was closely related with Nrf2 activation.

The halophilic archaea (haloarchaea) live in hyersaline environments such as salt lakes, salt ponds and marine salterns. To cope with the salt stress conditions, haloarchaea have developed two fundamentally different strategies: the "salt-in" strategy and the "compatible-solute" strategy. Although investigation of the molecular mechanisms underlying the tolerance to high salt concentrations has made outstanding achievements, experimental study from the aspect of transcription is rare. In the present study, we monitored cellular physiology of Natrinema sp. J7-2 cells incubated in different salinity media (15%, 25% and 30% NaCl) from several aspects, such as cellular morphology, growth, global transcriptome and the content of intracellular free amino acids. The results showed that the cells were polymorphic and fragile at a low salt concentration (15% NaCl) but had a long, slender rod shape at high salt concentrations (25% and 30% NaCl). The cells grew best in 25% NaCl, mediocre in 30% NaCl and struggled in 15% NaCl. An RNA-seq analysis revealed differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in various salinity media. A total of 1,148 genes were differentially expressed, consisting of 719 DEGs (348 up-regulated and 371 down-regulated genes) between cells in 15% vs 25% NaCl, and 733 DEGs (521 up-regulated and 212 down-regulated genes) between cells in 25% vs 30% NaCl. Moreover, 304 genes were commonly differentially expressed in both 15% vs 25% and 25% vs30% NaCl. The DEGs were enriched in different KEGG metabolic pathways, such as amino acids, glycerolipid, ribosome, nitrogen, protoporphyrin, porphyrin and porhiniods. The intracellular predominant free amino acids consisted of the glutamate family (Glu, Arg and Pro), aspartate family (Asp) and aromatic amino acids (Phe and Trp), especially Glu and Asp.

Although viruses of haloarchaea are the predominant predator in hypersaline ecosystem, the culture studies about halovirus-host systems are infancy. The main reason is the tradition methodology (plaque assay) for virus-host interaction depends on culturable and susceptible host. Actually, more than 90% of haloarchaea are unculturable. Therefore, it is necessary to establish an approach for detecting the dynamics of virus in hypersaline environment without culture. In this study, we report a convenient method to determine the dynamics of halovirus SNJ1 based on quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). All findings showed that the qPCR method was specific (single peak in melt curves), accurate (a good linear relationship between the log of the PFU and the Ct values, R2 = 0.99), reproducible (low coefficient of variations, below 1%). Additionally, the physicochemical characteristics of the samples tested did not influence the stability of qPCR. Therefore, the qPCR method has the potential value in quantifying and surveying haloviruses in halophilic ecological system.

Addition of rare earth oxide CeO2 with variable valences to La2O3 formed a mixture of rare earth oxides. This mixture can be used as the catalyst for the reduction of SO2 by CO. In a fixed-bed flow reactor, experimental were investigated for studying the activation process of this catalyst and effect factors such as temperature and concentration ratio of reactant on the activation reaction under the following conditions: composition of the gas mixture SO2:CO = 1:3, balancing with N2 and feed flow rate 1000 mL/min. The phase structure changes of this catalyst were expressed with XRD and XPS. The results demonstrated that the activation temperature of CeO2-La2O3/gamma-Al2O3 is 50-100 degrees C lower than that of a single component La2O3/gamma-Al2O3 or CeO2/gamma-Al2O3, and the mixture of rare earth oxides has higher activity on catalytic reduction of SO2 by CO. It's most likely that the result reveals on the synergism between CeO2 and La2O3.
