RESUMO

The support has been provided by clinical trials and guidelines for managing patent foramen ovale (PFO) in adults; however, the optimal approach is still unclear for treating PFO in pediatric patients. PFO and its associated clinical syndromes, imaging diagnosis, and management in pediatric patients were analyzed by a comprehensive analysis. Extensive research was performed using electronic databases, including PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, and EMBASE. This review includes the studies published until February 1st, 2024. A total of 583 articles were obtained, of which 54 were included in the comprehensive review. Numerous evidences have indicated that a right-to-left shunt through a PFO may be involved in cryptogenic stroke in children, although the connection between migraine and aura has not been substantiated by robust evidence. Children with sickle cell disease and a PFO were at higher risks of paradoxical embolization, rare syndromes caused by PFO could also occur in children such as platypnea-orthodeoxia syndrome, myocardial infarction, and decompression sickness. Contrast transthoracic echocardiography was deemed the most appropriate examination for children due to its favorable transthoracic windows, eliminating the need for anesthesia. This review suggested that the additional treatment was not needed as no evidence was provided for potential future complications linked to isolated PFO in children. For children facing unique circumstances related to PFO, a customized interdisciplinary consultation is essential prior to considering medical interventions.

BACKGROUND: The significance of tumor-secreted cytokines in tumor development has gained substantial attention. Nevertheless, the precise role of tumor-related inflammatory cytokines in prostate cancer (PCa) remains ambiguous. OBJECTIVES: To gain deeper insights into the inflammatory response in the process of PCa. METHODS: A total of 233 cases were collected, including 80 cases of prostate hyperplasia as disease control, 65 cases of postoperative prostate cancer and 36 cases of prostate cancer as PCa group. Additionally, 52 patients undergoing physical examinations during the same period were collected as the healthy control. The levels of 12 inflammatory cytokines in peripheral blood samples were analyzed using flow cytometric bead array technology. The levels of total prostate-specific antigen (TPSA) and free prostate-specific antigen (FPSA) in peripheral blood samples were analyzed using electrochemiluminescence technology. RESULTS: Our findings revealed significant increases in serum IL-8 levels in PCa group compared to the healthy control group. Additionally, IL-6, IL-10, IFN-γ and IL-12p70 levels were markedly elevated in the PCa group compared to the disease control group (all p < 0.05). Conversely, the level of IL-4, TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-17A and IFN-α were lower in the PCa group compared to those in control group. Following surgery, the concentration of IL-6 decreased; whereas, the concentrations of IL-4, TNF-α, IL-17A, IL-1ß, IL-12p70, and IFN-α increased, demonstrating significant differences (p < 0.05). The differential upregulation of IL-6 or downregulation of IL-17A in peripheral blood exhibited diagnostic efficacy in PCa patients. Moreover, we observed a significant increase in IL-17A levels, accompanied by decreased of IL-2, IL-4, IL-10, TNF-a, IFN-γ, IL-1ß, and IL-12P70 in patients with distant metastasis. CONCLUSION: The peripheral blood cytokines are closely associated with the occurrence and development of prostate cancer, especially the serum levels of IL-6 and IL-17A may be useful as potential predictors of PCa diagnosis.

The systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), an integrated and ground-breaking inflammatory measure, has been widely used in various fields. We aimed to assess the association between the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and α-Klotho (a new anti-aging biomarker). In this cross-sectional investigation, people with complete information on SII and α-Klotho from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2007 and 2016 were the study's subject population. SII was calculated by platelet count × neutrophil count/lymphocyte count. The association between SII and α-Klotho was investigated using multivariable linear regression and a generalized additive model. In order to explore the non-linear connection, we employed smoothed curve fitting. Subgroup analysis were also performed. A total of 13,701 participants with an average age of 57.73 ± 10.86 years were enrolled, of whom 51.53% were female. After fully adjustment, SII was negatively associated with serum soluble α-Klotho [ß(95% CI) = - 0.07 (- 0.08, - 0.05)]. Furthermore, we found L-shaped association between SII and klotho protein level, with the inflection point at 255 pg/ml. Subgroup analysis and interaction test revealed that there was no discernible dependence on gender, age, race, smoking, alcohol, diabetes and hypertension (all p for interaction > 0.05). SII level was negatively associated with serum klotho protein concentration in American adults. To verify our findings, more large-scale prospective investigations are still required.

Quantum dot (QD) light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) are promising for next-generation lighting and displays. Considering the optimization design of both the QD and device structure is expected to improve the QLED's performance significantly but has rarely been reported. Here, we use the thick-shell QDs combined with a dual-hole transport layer device structure to construct a high-efficiency QLED. The optimized thick-shell QDs with CdS/CdSe/CdS/ZnS seed/spherical quantum well/shell/shell geometry exhibit a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 96% at a shell thickness of 5.9 nm. The intermediate emissive CdSe layer with coherent strain ensures defect-free growth of the thick CdS and ZnS outer shells. Based on the orthogonal solvents assisted Poly-TPD&PVK dual-hole transport layer device architecture, the champion QLED achieved a maximum external quantum efficiency of 22.5% and a maximum luminance of 259955 cd m-2, which are 1.6 and 3.7 times that of thin-shell QDs based devices with single hole transport layer, respectively. Our study provides a feasible idea for further improving the performance of QLED devices.

Myricetin and its derivatives, myricitrin and dihydromyricetin, are flavonoids widely presented in foods and phytomedicine that possess tremendous health potential. In this study, we compared the antiglycation activity of myricetin and its derivatives, then investigated the underlying mechanism using proteomic modification and fluorescence spectroscopy analysis. All three compounds exhibited thorough inhibition on nonenzymatic glycation process, with the inhibitory effects on AGEs reaching 85% at 40 µmol/L. They effectively protected bovine serum albumin (BSA) structure by inhibiting protein oxidation, preventing the conversion from α-helix to ß-sheet, and reducing amyloid-like cross-ß structure formation. Among the three compounds, myricetin showed a predominant antiglycation activity. Proteomic analysis identified the early glycated sites that were protected by myricetin, including lysine K235, 256, 336, 421, 420, 489, etc. Additionally, fluorescence spectroscopy revealed spontaneous interactions between BSA and myricetin. Overall, myricetin holds promise as an antiglycation agent in both the food and drug industries.

BACKGROUND: Garlic is a promising source of antimicrobial peptide separation, and chemical modification is an effective method for activity improvement. The present study aimed to improve the antifungal activity of a peptide extracted from garlic. Chemical modifications were conducted, and the structure-activity relationship and antifungal mechanism were investigated. RESULTS: The results indicated that the cationic charge induced by Lys residue at the N-terminal was important for the antimicrobial activity, and the modified sequence exhibited significant antifungal activity with low mammalian toxicity and a low tendency of drug resistance (p < 0.05). The structure-activity relationship analysis revealed that the modified active peptide had a predominant α-helical structure and an inner cyclic correlation. Transcriptomic analysis showed that peptide KMLKKLFR (Lys-Met-Leu-Lys-Lyse-Leu-Phe-Arg) affected the rRNA processing and carbon metabolism process of Candida albicans. In addition, the membrane potential study indicated a non-membrane destruction mechanism, and molecular docking analysis and a DNA interaction assay suggested promising inner targets. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study indicate that chemical modification by amino acid substitution was effective for antimicrobial activity improvement. The present study would benefit future antimicrobial peptide development and suggests that garlic is a great source of antibacterial peptides and peptide template separations for coping with antibiotic resistance. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Underwater exercise is becoming increasingly prevalent, during which brain function is necessary but is also at risk. However, no study has explored how prolonged exercise affect the brain in underwater environment. Previous studies have indicated that excessive exercise in common environment causes brain dysfunction but have failed to provide appropriate interventions. Numerous evidence has indicated the neuroprotective effect of hyperbaric oxygen preconditioning (HBO-PC). The objective of this study was to investigate the cognitive effect of prolonged underwater exercise (PUE) and to explore the potential neuroprotective effect of HBO-PC in underwater environment. Rats swimming for 3h in a simulated hyperbaric chamber (2.0 ATA) was used to establish the PUE animal model and HBO-PC (2.5 ATA for 1, 3,5 times respectively) was administrated before PUE. The results demonstrated that PUE triggers anxiety-like behaviors, cognitive impairment accompanied by hippocampal dysfunction, microglia activation and neuroinflammation. Conversely, 3 HBO-PC rescued anxiety-like behaviors and cognitive impairment. Mechanistically, 3 HBO-PC reduced microglia activation and switched the activated microglia from a pro-inflammatory to neuroprotective phenotype. These findings illustrated that PUE induces anxiety-like behaviors and cognitive impairment and HBO-PC of proper frequency may provide an appropriate and less invasive intervention for protecting the brain in underwater exercise.

The tumor microenvironment (TME) of typical tumor types such as triple-negative breast cancer is featured by hypoxia and immunosuppression with abundant tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), which also emerge as potential therapeutic targets for antitumor therapy. M1-like macrophage-derived exosomes (M1-Exos) have emerged as a promising tumor therapeutic candidate for their tumor-targeting and macrophage-polarization capabilities. However, the limited drug-loading efficiency and stability of M1-Exos have hindered their effectiveness in antitumor applications. In this study, we have developed a hybrid nanovesicle by integrating M1-Exos with AS1411 aptamer-conjugated liposomes (AApt-Lips), termed M1E/AALs. The obtained M1E/AALs are loaded with PFTBA and IR780, as P-Is, to construct P-I@M1E/AALs for reprogramming TME by alleviating tumor hypoxia and engineering TAMs. P-I@M1E/AALs-mediated tumor therapy enhances the in situ generation of reactive oxygen species, repolarizes TAMs toward an antitumor phenotype, and promotes the infiltration of T lymphocytes. The synergistic antitumor therapy based on P-I@M1E/AALs significantly suppresses tumor growth and prolongs the survival of 4T1 tumor-bearing mice. By integrating multiple treatment modalities, P-I@M1E/AALs nanoplatform demonstrates a promising therapeutic approach for overcoming hypoxic and immunosuppressive TME by targeted TAM reprogramming and enhanced tumor photodynamic immunotherapy. This study highlights an innovative TAM-engineering hybrid nanovesicle platform for the treatment of tumors characterized by hypoxic and immunosuppressive TME. This article is protected by copyright. Foodborne pathogens result in a great harm to human, which is an urgent problem to be addressed. Herein, a novel cellulose-based packaging films with excellent anti-bacterial properties under visible light were prepared. A porphyrin-based covalent organic polymer (Por-COPs) was constructed, then covalently grafted onto dialdehyde cellulose (DAC). The addition of Por-COPs enhanced the mechanical, hydrophobicity, and water resistance of the DAC-based composite films. DAC/Por-COP-2.5 film exhibited outstanding properties for the photodynamic inactivation of bacteria under visible light irradiation, delivering inactivation efficiencies of 99.90 % and 99.45 % towards Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli within 20 min. The DAC/Por-COPs films efficiently generated •O2- and 1O2 under visible light, thereby causing oxidative stress to cell membranes for bacterial inactivation. The prepared composite film forms a protective barrier against bacterial contamination. Results guide the development of high performance and more sustainable packaging films for the food sector.

Peripheral T cell lymphoma (PTCL) is a heterogeneous and aggressive disease with a poor prognosis. Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors have shown inhibitory effects on PTCL. A better understanding of the therapeutic mechanism underlying the effects of HDAC inhibitors could help improve treatment strategies. Here, we found that high expression of HDAC3 is associated with poor prognosis in PTCL. HDAC3 inhibition suppressed lymphoma growth in immunocompetent mice but not in immunodeficient mice. HDAC3 deletion delayed the progression of lymphoma, reduced the lymphoma burden in the thymus, spleen, and lymph nodes, and prolonged the survival of mice bearing MNU-induced lymphoma. Furthermore, inhibiting HDAC3 promoted the infiltration and enhanced the function of natural killer (NK) cells. Mechanistically, HDAC3 mediated ATF3 deacetylation, enhancing its transcriptional inhibitory activity. Targeting HDAC3 enhanced CXCL12 secretion through an ATF3-dependent pathway to stimulate NK cell recruitment and activation. Finally, HDAC3 suppression improved the response of PTCL to conventional chemotherapy. Collectively, this study provides insights into the mechanism by which HDAC3 regulates ATF3 activity and CXCL12 secretion, leading to immune infiltration and lymphoma suppression. Combining HDAC3 inhibitors with chemotherapy may be a promising strategy for treating PTCL. Key words: Histone deacetylases (HDACs), Natural killer (NK) cells, Peripheral T cell lymphoma (PTCL).

RESUMO

The integration of palliative care into routine oncology practice is the standard of care by most leading cancer organizations. Palliative medicine helps to deliver higher quality of care at a lower cost. However, there are barriers to implementing palliative oncology at many institutions for myriad reasons. In this article, we discuss an innovative strategy that ASCO implemented called the Communities of Practice (CoP). We share our experiences as the Palliative Care CoP and how our group seeks to develop processes and structures to collectively promote systemic change and enhance palliative care delivery for people with cancer. Our Palliative Care CoP engages with senior leaders, administrators, and those in power to achieve a shared vision of delivering holistic health care for people with serious illness. We continue to evolve to meet our members' growing needs by addressing eight main domains: (1) increasing palliative care education and resources; (2) creating opportunities for global palliative care research; (3) providing peer mentorship and community building; (4) engaging with patient advocates; (5) supporting and developing interdisciplinary teams; (6) assisting with professional development and identity formation, especially for trainees and early career faculty; (7) extending our outreach through social media; and (8) enhancing the clinical practice of palliative oncology. The ASCO CoP has been a vital forum to realize ASCO's mission of conquering cancer and advancing the Art and Science of Cancer Care: From Comfort to Cure.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) 16 and 18 infections are related to many human cancers. Despite several preventive vaccines for high-risk (hr) HPVs, there is still an urgent need to develop therapeutic HPV vaccines for targeting pre-existing hrHPV infections and lesions. In this study, we developed a lipid nanoparticle (LNP)-formulated mRNA-based HPV therapeutic vaccine (mHTV)-03E2, simultaneously targeting the E2/E6/E7 of both HPV16 and HPV18. mHTV-03E2 dramatically induced antigen-specific cellular immune responses, leading to significant CD8+ T cell infiltration and cytotoxicity in TC-1 tumors derived from primary lung epithelial cells of C57BL/6 mice expressing HPV E6/E7 antigens, mediated significant tumor regression, and prolonged animal survival, in a dose-dependent manner. We further demonstrated significant T cell immunity against HPV16/18 E6/E7 antigens for up to 4 months post-vaccination in immunological and distant tumor rechallenging experiments, suggesting robust memory T cell immunity against relapse. Finally, mHTV-03E2 synergized with immune checkpoint blockade to inhibit tumor growth and extend animal survival, indicating the potential in combination therapy. We conclude that mHTV-03E2 is an excellent candidate therapeutic mRNA vaccine for treating malignancies caused by HPV16 or HPV18 infections.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the application value of human epididymis protein 4 (HE4) in diagnosing and monitoring the prognosis of lung cancer. METHODS: First, TCGA (The Cancer Genome Atlas) databases were used to analyze whey-acidic-protein 4-disulfide bond core domain 2 (WFDC2) gene expression levels in lung cancer tissues. Then, a total of 160 individuals were enrolled, categorized into three groups: the lung cancer group (n = 80), the benign lesions group (n = 40), and the healthy controls group (n = 40). Serum HE4 levels and other biomarkers were quantified using an electro-chemiluminescent immunoassay. Additionally, the expression of HE4 in tissues was analyzed through immunohistochemistry (IHC). In vitro cultures of human airway epithelial (human bronchial epithelial [HBE]) cells and various lung cancer cell lines (SPC/PC9/A594/H520) were utilized to detect HE4 levels via western blot (WB). RESULTS: Analysis of the TCGA and UALCAN (The University of Alabama at Birmingham Cancer Data Analysis Portal) databases showed that WFDC2 gene expression levels were upregulated in lung cancer tissues (p < 0.01). Compared with the control group and the benign group, HE4 was significantly higher in the serum of patients with lung cancer (p < 0.001). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis confirmed that HE4 had better diagnostic efficacy than classical markers in the differential diagnosis of lung cancer and benign lesions and had the highest diagnostic value in lung adenocarcinoma (area under the ROC curve [AUC] = 0.826). HE4 increased in early lung cancer and positively correlated with poor prognosis (p < 0.001). Moreover, the results of WB and IHC revealed that the expression of HE4 was increased in lung cancer cells (SPC/A549/H520) and lung cancer tissues but decreased in PC9 cells with a lack of exon EGFR19 (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Serum HE4 emerges as a promising novel biomarker for the diagnosis and prognosis assessment of lung cancer.

Light plays a pivotal role in regulating anthocyanin biosynthesis in plants, and the early light-responsive signals that initiate anthocyanin biosynthesis remain to be elucidated. In this study, we showed that the anthocyanin biosynthesis in Eucalyptus is hypersensitive to increased light intensity. The combined transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses were conducted on Eucalyptus leaves after moderate (ML; 100 µmol m-2 s-1) and high (HL; 300 µmol m-2 s-1) light intensity treatments. The results identified 1940, 1096, 1173, and 2756 differentially expressed genes at 6, 12, 24, and 36 h after HL treatment, respectively. The metabolomic results revealed the primary anthocyanin types, and other differentially accumulated flavonoids and phenylpropane intermediates that were produced in response to HL, which well aligned with the transcriptome results. Moreover, biochemical analysis showed that HL inhibited peroxidase activity and increased the ROS level in Eucalyptus leaves. ROS depletion through co-application of the antioxidants rutin, uric acid, and melatonin significantly reduced, and even abolished, anthocyanin biosynthesis induced by HL treatment. Additionally, exogenous application of hydrogen peroxide efficiently induced anthocyanin biosynthesis within 24 h, even under ML conditions, suggesting that ROS played a major role in activating anthocyanin biosynthesis. A HL-responsive MYB transcription factor EgrMYB113 was identified to play an important role in regulating anthocyanin biosynthesis by targeting multiple anthocyanin biosynthesis genes. Additionally, the results demonstrated that gibberellic acid and sugar signaling contributed to HL-induced anthocyanin biosynthesis. Conclusively, these results suggested that HL triggers multiple signaling pathways to induce anthocyanin biosynthesis, with ROS acting as indispensable mediators in Eucalyptus.

Objective: To explore the effect of applying the online to offline teaching mode in the training of non-anesthesiology residents in department of anesthesiology. Trial design: The randomized controlled trial was performed on non-anesthesiology residents from Affiliated Jiangning Hospital of Nanjing Medical University. Methods: All selected residents were randomly divided into the traditional teaching group (Group T) and the online to offline teaching group (Group O) by the random number table method. Traditional teaching mode was used in Group T, while the online to offline teaching mode was used in Group O. The training period lasted for two months. At the end of the training, theoretical and clinical skills were assessed for all residents, and students' satisfaction scores on teaching were investigated from the aspects of teaching mode, stimulating learning interest, improving learning process and teaching satisfaction. The teaching efficiency was compared and analyzed in the two groups. Results: In total, 39 cases in Group O and 38 cases in Group T were included in the statistical analysis. Compared with Group T, theory test scores, clinical skills test scores, and overall scores improved significantly in Group O (82.2 ± 8.1 vs. 91.3 ± 7.6; 85.1 ± 4.7 vs. 93.3 ± 5.4 and 83.4 ± 6.4 vs. 92.1 ± 6.7, respectively, p < 0.01). Compared with Group T, scores on teaching mode, stimulating learning interest, improving learning process and teaching satisfaction were higher in Group O (81.1 ± 6.9 vs. 93.7 ± 5.2; 83.6 ± 5.8 vs. 91.6 ± 6.4; 82.4 ± 5.3 vs. 90.9 ± 4.8 and 82.1 ± 5.9 vs. 92.1 ± 5.5, respectively, p < 0.01). Conclusion: The online to offline teaching mode can improve the level of professional theory and clinical skill operation, and teaching satisfaction of the non-anesthesiology residents in department of anesthesiology, thus improving the teaching effectiveness.

RESUMO

The interactions of environmental compartments with epithelial cells are essential for mammary gland development and homeostasis. Currently, the direct crosstalk between the endothelial niche and mammary epithelial cells remains poorly understood. Here, we show that faciogenital dysplasia 5 (FGD5) is enriched in mammary basal cells (BCs) and mediates critical interactions between basal and endothelial cells (ECs) in the mammary gland. Conditional deletion of Fgd5 reduced, whereas conditional knockin of Fgd5 increased, the engraftment and expansion of BCs, regulating ductal morphogenesis in the mammary gland. Mechanistically, murine mammary BC-expressed FGD5 inhibited the transcriptional activity of activating transcription factor 3 (ATF3), leading to subsequent transcriptional activation and secretion of CXCL14. Furthermore, activation of CXCL14/CXCR4/ERK signaling in primary murine mammary stromal ECs enhanced the expression of HIF-1α-regulated hedgehog ligands, which initiated a positive feedback loop to promote the function of BCs. Collectively, these findings identify functionally important interactions between BCs and the endothelial niche that occur through the FGD5/CXCL14/hedgehog axis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the child-centered treatment significantly increased satisfaction as revealed by CBCL scores and decreased duration of nasal endoscopy. METHODS: A total of 206 pediatric patients were selected as study participants. Using a random number table, the participants were divided into the control group and the treatment group, with 103 cases in each group. The control group received routine nursing care, whereas the treatment group received child-centered health education nursing intervention. The differences between the two groups were observed in four aspects: examination compliance, child behavior checklist (CBCL) scores, the satisfaction level of the patient's family with the nurses in the endoscopy room, and the average duration of the nasal endoscopy. RESULTS: Subsequent to the implementation of the intervention, it was observed that within the treatment group, the level of compliance among pediatric patients undergoing nasal endoscopy exhibited a statistically significant increase when compared to the control group; the CBCL scores of both groups were lower than those before nursing care, and those of the treatment group were statistically significantly lower than those of the control group; the satisfaction rate of the patient's family in two groups was 74 % and 90 %, respectively. The average duration of nasal endoscopy was statistically significantly lower in the treatment group than that in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: The implementation of a child-centered health education nursing intervention for pediatric patients undergoing nasal endoscopy has been shown to effectively mitigate instances of crying and screaming, enhance patient compliance, reduce examination duration, and elevate the overall satisfaction levels among their respective families.

This study developed a new process that stably produced ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3), an important and commonly used fertilizer, from the source-separated urine by comammox Nitrospira. In the first stage, the complete conversion of ammonium to nitrate was achieved by comammox Nitrospira. In this scenario, the pH was maintained at 6 by adding external alkali, which also provided sufficient alkalinity for full nitrification. In the second stage, the NH4NO3 was produced directly by comammox Nitropsira by converting half of the ammonium in urine into nitrate. In this case, no alkali was added and pH automatically dropped and self-maintained at an extremely acidic level (pH 3-4). In both scenarios, negligible nitrite accumulation was observed, while the final product of the second stage contained ammonium and nitrate at the molar ratio of 1:1. The dominance of comammox Nitrospira over canonical ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) was systematically proved by the combination of 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and metagenomics. Notably, metagenomic sequencing suggested that the relative abundance of comammox Nitrospira was over 20 % under the acidic condition at pH 3-4, while canonical AOB and NOB were undetectable. Batch experiments showed that the optimal pH for the enriched comammox Nitrospira was ∼7, which could sustain their activity in a wider pH range from 4 to 8 surprisingly but lost activity at pH 3 and 9. The findings not only present an application potential of comammox Nitrospira in nitrogen recovery from urine wastewater but also report the survivability of comammox bacteria in acidic environments.

Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation is one of the important pathways for green and sustainable ammonia synthesis, but the extremely high bonding energy of the N≡N triple bond makes it difficult for conventional nitrogen fixation photocatalysts to directly activate and hydrogenate. Given this, we covalently grafted the phenanthroline unit onto graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (CN) by the simple thermal oxidation method and complexed it with transition metal Fe3+ ions to obtain stable dispersed Fe active sites, which can significantly improve the photocatalytic activity. The Fe(III)-4-P-CN photocatalyst morphology consists of porous lamellar structures internally connected by nanowires. The special morphology of the catalysts gives them excellent nitrogen fixation performance, with an average NH3 yield of 492.9 µmol g-1 h-1, which is 6.5 times higher than that of the pristine CN, as well as better photocatalytic cycling stability. Comprehensive experiments and density-functional theory results show that Fe(III)-4-P-CN is more favorable than pristine CN for *N2 activation, effectively lowering the reaction energy barrier. Moreover, other byproducts (such as nitrate and H2O2) are also produced during the photocatalytic nitrogen fixation process, which also provides a new way for nitrogen-fixing photocatalysts to achieve multifunctional applications.

Salt stress is a critical limiting factor for fruit yield and quality of apples. Brassinosteroids (BRs) play an important role in response to abiotic stresses. In the present study, application of 2,4- Epicastasterone on seedlings of Malus 'M9T337' and Malus domestica 'Gala3' alleviated the physiological effects, such as growth inhibition and leaf yellowing, induced by salt stress. Further analysis revealed that treatment with NaCl induced expression of genes involved in BR biosynthesis in 'M9T337' and 'Gala3'. Among which, the expression of BR biosynthetic gene MdBR6OX2 showed a three-fold upregulation upon salt treatment, suggesting its potential role in response to salt stress in apple. MdBR6OX2, belonging to the CYP450 family, contains a signal peptide region and a P450 domain. Expression patterns analysis showed that the expression of MdBR6OX2 can be significantly induced by different abiotic stresses. Overexpressing MdBR6OX2 enhanced the tolerance of apple callis to salt stress, and the contents of endogenous BR-related compounds, such as Typhastero (TY), Castasterone (CS) and Brassinolide (BL) were significantly increased in transgenic calli compared with that of wild-type. Extopic expression of MdBR6OX2 enhanced tolerance to salt stress in Arabidopsis. Genes associated with salt stress were significantly up-regulated, and the contents of BR-related compounds were significantly elevated under salt stress. Our data revealed that BR-biosynthetic gene MdBR6OX2 positively regulates salt stress tolerance in both apple calli and Arabidopsis.
