BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Airway epithelial cells (AECs) regulate the activation of epithelial-mesenchymal trophic units (EMTUs) during airway remodelling through secretion of signalling mediators. However, the major trigger and the intrinsic pathogenesis of airway remodelling is still obscure. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: The differing expressed genes in airway epithelia related to airway remodelling were screened and verified by RNA-sequencing and signalling pathway analysis. Then, the effects of increased cathepsin K (CTSK) in airway epithelia on airway remodelling and EMTU activation were identified both in vitro and in vivo, and the molecular mechanism was elucidated in the EMTU model. The potential of CTSK as an an effective biomarker of airway remodelling was analysed in an asthma cohort of differing severity. Finally, an inhibitor of CTSK was administered for potential therapeutic intervention for airway remodelling in asthma. KEY RESULTS: The expression of CTSK in airway epithelia increased significantly along with the development of airway remodelling in a house dust mite (HDM)-stressed asthma model. Increased secretion of CTSK from airway epithelia induced the activation of EMTUs by activation of the PAR2-mediated pathway. Blockade of CTSK inhibited EMTU activation and alleviated airway remodelling as an effective intervention target of airway remodelling. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Increased expression of CTSK in airway epithelia is involved in the development of airway remodelling in asthma through EMTU activation, mediated partly through the PAR2-mediated signalling pathway. CTSK is a potential biomarker for airway remodelling, and may also be a useful intervention target for airway remodelling in asthma patients.

Epidemiological findings have determined the linkage of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and the morbidity of hypertension. However, the mode of action and specific contribution of PM2.5 component in the blood pressure elevation remain unclear. Platelets are critical for vascular homeostasis and thrombosis, which may be involved in the increase of blood pressure. Among 240 high-PM2.5 exposed, 318 low-PM2.5 exposed workers in a coking plant and 210 workers in the oxygen plant and cold-rolling mill enrolled in present study, both internal and external exposure characteristics were obtained, and we performed linear regression, adaptive elastic net regression, quantile g-computation and mediation analyses to analyze the relationship between urine metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metals fractions with platelets indices and blood pressure indicators. We found that PM2.5 exposure leads to increased systolic blood pressure (SBP) and pulse pressure (PP). Specifically, for every 10 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5, there was a 0.09 mmHg rise in PP. Additionally, one IQR increase in urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1.06 µmol/mol creatinine) was associated with a 3.43 % elevation in PP. Similarly, an IQR increment of urine cobalt (2.31 µmol/mol creatinine) was associated with a separate 1.77 % and 4.71 % elevation of SBP and PP. Notably, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) played a mediating role in the elevation of SBP and PP induced by cobalt. Our multi-pollutants results showed that PAHs and cobalt were deleterious contributors to the elevated blood pressure. These findings deepen our understanding of the cardiovascular effects associated with PM2.5 constituents, highlighting the importance of increased vigilance in monitoring and controlling the harmful components in PM2.5.

Tumor-derived extracellular vesicles (TEVs) are rich in cellular information and hold great promise as a biomarker for noninvasive cancer diagnosis. However, accurate measurement of TEVs presents challenges due to their low abundance and potential interference from a high number of EVs derived from normal cells. Herein, an aptamer-proximity-ligation-activated rolling circle amplification (RCA) method for EV membrane recognition, coupled with single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (sp-ICP-MS) for the quantification of TEVs, is developed. When DNA-labeled ultrasmall gold nanoparticle (AuNP) probes bind to the long chains formed by RCA, they aggregate to form large particles. Notably, small AuNPs scarcely produce pulse signals in sp-ICP-MS, thereby detecting TEVs in a wash-free manner. By leveraging the strong binding affinity of aptamers, dual aptamers for EpCAM and PD-L1 recognition, and the sp-ICP-MS technique, this method offers remarkable sensitivity and selectivity in tracing TEVs. Under optimized conditions, the present method shows a favorable linear relationship between the pulse signal frequency of sp-ICP-MS and TEV concentration within the range of 105-107 particles/mL, along with a detection limit of 1.1 × 104 particles/mL. The pulse signals from sp-ICP-MS combined with machine learning algorithms are used to discriminate cancer patients from healthy donors with 100% accuracy. Due to its simple and fast operation and excellent sensitivity and accuracy, this approach holds significant potential for diverse applications in life sciences and personalized medicine.

Removing free hemoglobin generated during extracorporeal circulation remains a challenge. Currently, there is no adsorbent with specificity and good biosafety for removing hemoglobin. In this study, a new chitosan/sodium alginate/carbon nitride (CS/SA/C3N4) hydrogel adsorbent was prepared by blending SA with C3N4 to drop into CS/CaCl2 solution. The physicochemical properties of CS/SA/C3N4 hydrogel were evaluated using some techniques, including scanning electron microscope, Zeta potential measurement, and thermogravimetric analysis. Hemoglobin adsorption in vitro, stability, hemocompatibility, cell compatibility, inflammatory reaction and blood extracorporeal circulation in vivo were also evaluated. The findings revealed that the CS/SA/C3N4-0.4 % hydrogel exhibited an impressive adsorption capacity of 142.35 mg/g for hemoglobin. The kinetic data of hemoglobin adsorption were well-described by pseudo second-order model, while the isothermal model data conformed to the Langmuir model. The hardness and modulus of CS/SA/C3N4-0.4 % was 11.7 KPa and 94.66 KPa respectively, which indicated robust resistance to breakage. CS/SA/C3N4 demonstrated excellent hemocompatibility, biocompatibility and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, the results of in vivo rabbit extracorporeal blood circulation experiment demonstrated that CS/SA/C3N4 could adsorb free hemoglobin from blood while maintaining high biosafety standard. Consequently, CS/SA/C3N4 hydrogel emerges as a promising candidate for use as a hemoglobin adsorbent in extracorporeal blood circulation system.

Quantum Hall effect, the quantized transport phenomenon of electrons under strong magnetic fields, remains one of the hottest research topics in condensed matter physics since its discovery in 2D electronic systems. Recently, as a great advance in the research of quantum Hall effects, the quantum Hall effect in 3D systems, despite its big challenge, has been achieved in the bulk ZrTe5 and Cd3As2 materials. Interestingly, Cd3As2 is a Weyl semimetal, and quantum Hall effect is hosted by the Fermi arc states on opposite surfaces via the Weyl nodes of the bulk, and induced by the unique edge states on the boundaries of the opposite surfaces. However, such intriguing edge state distribution has not yet been experimentally observed. Here, we aim to reveal experimentally the unusual edge states of Fermi arcs in acoustic Weyl system with the aid of pseudo-magnetic field. Benefiting from the macroscopic nature of acoustic crystals, the pseudo-magnetic field is introduced by elaborately designed the gradient on-site energy, and the edge states of Fermi arcs on the boundaries of the opposite surfaces are unambiguously demonstrated in experiments. Our system serves as an ideal and highly tunable platform to explore the Hall physics in 3D system, and has the potential in the application of new acoustic devices.

Determining the optimal number of emergency medical suppliers for the government to contract with in the context of public health events poses a challenging problem. Having too many suppliers can result in increased costs, while having too few suppliers can potentially expose the government to supply risks. Striking the right balance between these two factors is crucial in ensuring efficient and reliable emergency response and management. This study examines the process of determining the appropriate number of suppliers in emergency medical supply chain. By incorporating option contracts and employing the total cost of government procurement as the objective function, the analysis focuses on the impact of relevant parameters on the optimal number of suppliers. Furthermore, the study investigates the optimal supplier quantities under different types of option contracts. The proposed decision model for determining the optimal number of suppliers in this paper considers three key factors: the supply risk associated with emergency medical supplies, the reserve cost of government procurement, and the responsiveness of emergency medical supplies. Additionally, a method is introduced for selecting the quantity of emergency medical suppliers based on flexible contracts. This approach offers a scientific foundation for the government to effectively address the challenge of supplier quantity selection when faced with risks related to shortages, expiration, and the combination of both.

Extracellular vesicle microRNAs (EV miRNAs) are critical noninvasive biomarkers for early cancer diagnosis. However, accurate cancer diagnosis based on bulk analysis is hindered by the heterogeneity among EVs. Herein, we report an approach for profiling single-EV multi-miRNA signatures by combining total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) imaging with a deep learning (DL) algorithm for the first time. This innovative technique allows for the precise characterization of EV miRNAs at the single-vesicle level, overcoming the challenges posed by EV heterogeneity. TIRF with high resolution and a signal-to-noise ratio can simultaneously detect multi-miRNAs in situ in individual EVs. DL algorithm avoids complicated and inaccurate artificial feature extraction, achieving automated high-resolution image analysis. Using this approach, we reveal that the main variation of EVs from 5 cancer cells and normal plasma is the triple-positive EV subpopulation, and the classification accuracy of single triple-positive EVs from 6 sources can reach above 95%. In the clinical cohort, 20 patients (5 lung cancer, 5 breast cancer, 5 cervical cancer, and 5 colon cancer) and 5 healthy controls are predicted with an overall accuracy of 100%. This single-EV strategy provides new opportunities for exploring more specific EV biomarkers to achieve cancer diagnosis and classification.

Continuum Landau modes - predicted recently in a non-Hermitian Dirac Hamiltonian under a uniform magnetic field - are continuous bound states with no counterparts in Hermitian systems. However, they have still not been confirmed in experiments. Here, we report an experimental observation of continuum Landau modes in non-Hermitian electric circuits, in which the non-Hermitian Dirac Hamiltonian is simulated by non-reciprocal hoppings and the pseudomagnetic field is introduced by inhomogeneous complex on-site potentials. Through measuring the admittance spectrum and the eigenstates, we successfully verify key features of continuum Landau modes. Particularly, we observe the exotic voltage response acting as a rainbow trap or wave funnel through full-field excitation. This response originates from the linear relationship between the modes' center position and complex eigenvalues. Our work builds a bridge between non-Hermiticity and magnetic fields, and thus opens an avenue to explore exotic non-Hermitian physics.

BACKGROUND: Microvascular complications are the major outcome of type 2 diabetes progression, and the underlying mechanism remains to be determined. METHODS: High-throughput RNA sequencing was performed using human monocyte samples from controls and diabetes. The transgenic mice expressing human CTSD (cathepsin D) in the monocytes was constructed using CD68 promoter. In vivo 2-photon imaging, behavioral tests, immunofluorescence, transmission electron microscopy, Western blot analysis, vascular leakage assay, and single-cell RNA sequencing were performed to clarify the phenotype and elucidate the molecular mechanism. RESULTS: Monocytes expressed high-level CTSD in patients with type 2 diabetes. The transgenic mice expressing human CTSD in the monocytes showed increased brain microvascular permeability resembling the diabetic microvascular phenotype, accompanied by cognitive deficit. Mechanistically, the monocytes release nonenzymatic pro-CTSD to upregulate caveolin expression in brain endothelium triggering caveolae-mediated transcytosis, without affecting the paracellular route of brain microvasculature. The circulating pro-CTSD activated the caveolae-mediated transcytosis in brain endothelial cells via its binding with low-density LRP1 (lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1). Importantly, genetic ablation of CTSD in the monocytes exhibited a protective effect against the diabetes-enhanced brain microvascular transcytosis and the diabetes-induced cognitive impairment. CONCLUSIONS: These findings uncover the novel role of circulatory pro-CTSD from monocytes in the pathogenesis of cerebral microvascular lesions in diabetes. The circulatory pro-CTSD is a potential target for the intervention of microvascular complications in diabetes.

This study aims to investigate differences in metabolism regarding the transition cows. Eight cows were selected for the test. Serum was collected on antepartum days 14th (ap14) and 7th (ap7) and postpartum days 1st (pp1), 7th (pp7), and 14th (pp14) to detect biochemical parameters. The experiment screened out differential metabolites in the antepartum (ap) and postpartum (pp) periods and combined with metabolic pathway analysis to study the relationship and role between metabolites and metabolic abnormalities. Results: (1) The glucose (Glu) levels in ap7 were significantly higher than the other groups (p < 0.01). The insulin (Ins) levels of ap7 were significantly higher than pp7 (p = 0.028) and pp14 (p < 0.01), and pp1 was also significantly higher than pp14 (p = 0.016). The insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) levels of ap7 were significantly higher than ap14, pp7, and pp14 (p < 0.01). The cholestenone (CHO) levels of ap14 and pp14 were significantly higher than pp1 (p < 0.01). The CHO levels of pp14 were significantly higher than pp7 (p < 0.01). The high density lipoprotein cholesterol (DHDL) levels of pp1 were significantly lower than ap14 (p = 0.04), pp7 (p < 0.01), and pp14 (p < 0.01), and pp14 was also significantly higher than ap14 and ap7 (p < 0.01). (2) The interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) levels of ap7 were significantly higher than pp1 and pp7 (p < 0.01); the immunoglobulin A (IgA) levels of pp1 were significantly higher than ap7 and pp7 (p < 0.01); the interleukin-4 (IL-4) levels of pp7 were significantly higher than ap7 and pp1 (p < 0.01), the interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels of ap7 and pp1 were significantly higher than pp7 (p < 0.01). (3) Metabolomics identified differential metabolites mainly involved in metabolic pathways, such as tryptophan metabolism, alpha-linolenic acid metabolism, tyrosine metabolism, and lysine degradation. The main relevant metabolism was concentrated in lipid and lipid-like molecules, organic heterocyclic compounds, organic acids, and their derivatives. The results displayed the metabolic changes in the transition period, which laid a foundation for further exploring the mechanism of metabolic abnormalities in dairy cows in the transition period.

Semiconductor materials have become a competitive candidate for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate. However, powdered semiconductors are difficult to execute a fast in situ detection for trace analytes. Here, we developed a new flexible semiconductor SERS substrate by in situ densely growing anatase TiO2 nanoparticles on the surface of cotton fabric through a filtration-hydrothermal method, in which TiO2 exhibits excellent controllability in size and distribution by regulating the ratio of water to alcohol in synthesis and the number of filtration-hydrothermal repetitive cycle. Cotton fabric/TiO2 (Cot/TiO2) substrate exhibits a high SERS activity and excellent spectral repeatability. The developed substrate has an ultra-high stability that can withstand long-term preservation; it can even resist the corrosions of strong acid and alkali, as well as high temperature up to 100 °C and low temperature down to - 20 °C. The flexible substrate can be used to carry out a rapid in situ detection for quinolone antibiotic (enrofloxacin and enoxacin) residues on the fish body surface by using a simple swabbing method, with high quantitative detection potential (up to an order of magnitude of 10-7 M), and even for the simultaneous detection of both drug residues. The flexible substrate also exhibits an excellent recyclability up to 6 recycles in the actual SERS detection.

Complexes formed by combining pentacyclic triterpenes (PTs) with Aggregation-Induced Emission luminogens (AIEgens), termed pentacyclic triterpene-aggregation induced emission (PT-AIEgen) complexes, merge the chemotherapeutic properties of PTs with the photocytotoxicity of AIEgens. In this study, we synthesized derivatives by connecting three types of triphenylamine (TPA) pyridinium derivatives with three common pentacyclic triterpenes. Altering the connecting group between the electron donor TPA and the electron acceptor pyridinium resulted in increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by PT-AIEgens and a red-shift in their fluorescence emission spectra. Importantly, the fluorescence emission spectra of BA-3, OA-3, and UA-3 extended into the near-infrared (NIR) range, enabling NIR-AIE imaging of the sites where the derivatives aggregated. The incorporation of the pyridinium structure improved the mitochondrial targeting of PT-AIEgens, enhancing mitochondrial pathway-mediated cell apoptosis and improving the efficiency of chemotherapy (CT) and chemo-photodynamic combined therapy (CPCT) both in vivo and in vitro. Cellular fluorescence imaging demonstrated rapid cellular uptake and mitochondrial accumulation of BA-1 (-2, -3). Cell viability experiments revealed that BA-1 (-2), OA-1 (-2), and UA-1 (-2) exhibited superior CT cytotoxicity compared to their parent drugs, with BA-1 showing the most potent inhibitory effect on HeLa cells (IC50 = 1.19 µM). Furthermore, HeLa cells treated with BA-1 (1 µM), BA-2 (1.25 µM), and BA-3 (1 µM) exhibited survival rates of 2.99 % ± 0.05 % µM, 5.92 % ± 2.04 % µM, and 2.53 % ± 0.73 % µM, respectively, under white light irradiation. Mechanistic experiments revealed that derivatives induced cell apoptosis via the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway during both CT and CPCT. Remarkably, BA-1 and BA-3 in CPCT inhibited cancer cell proliferation in an in vivo melanoma mouse xenograft model. These results collectively encourage further research of PT-AIEgens as potential anticancer agents.

Circuits on different layers in a printed circuit board (PCB) must be aligned according to high-precision fiducial mark images during exposure processing. However, processing quality depends on the detection accuracy of fiducial marks. Precise segmentation of fiducial marks from images can significantly improve detection accuracy. Due to the complex background of PCB images, there are significant challenges in the segmentation and detection of fiducial mark images. In this paper, the mARU-Net is proposed for the image segmentation of fiducial marks with complex backgrounds to improve detection accuracy. Compared with some typical segmentation methods in customized datasets of fiducial marks, the mARU-Net demonstrates good segmentation accuracy. Experimental research shows that, compared with the original U-Net, the segmentation accuracy of the mARU-Net is improved by 3.015%, while the number of parameters and training times are not increased significantly. Furthermore, the centroid method is used to detect circles in segmentation results, and the deviation is kept within 30 microns, with higher detection efficiency. The detection accuracy of fiducial mark images meets the accuracy requirements of PCB production.

OBJECTIVES: To observe the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) at "Jiaji" (EX-B 2) combined with neurodynamic mobilization (NM) on the cross-sectional area of the gastrocnemius muscle fibers after sciatic nerve injury in rabbits, and the expression of nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) and muscle-specific ring-finger protein 1 (MuRF1). METHODS: A total of 180 common-grade New Zealand rabbits (half male and half female) were randomly divided into five groups, i.e. a normal control group, a model control group, a NM group, an EA group and a combined intervention group, 36 rabbits in each group. Except in the normal control group, clipping method was used to prepare the model of sciatic nerve injury in the rest groups. On the 3rd day of successful modeling, NM was delivered in the NM group. In the EA group, EA was exerted at bilateral "Jiaji" (EX-B 2) of L4 to L6, stimulated with disperse-dense wave and the frequency of 2 Hz/100 Hz. In the combined intervention group, after EA delivered at bilateral "Jiaji" (EX-B 2) of L4 to L6 , NM was operated. The intervention in each group was delivered once daily, for 6 days a week, and lasted 1, 2 or 4 weeks according to the collection time of sample tissue. After 1, 2 and 4 weeks of intervention, in each group, the toe tension reflex score and the modified Tarlov test score were observed; the morphology of the gastrocnemius muscle was observed by HE staining and the cross-sectional area of muscular fiber was measured; using Western blot method, the expression of NF-κB and MuRF1 of the gastrocnemius muscle was detected. RESULTS: After 1, 2 and 4 weeks of intervention, the toe tension reflex scores and the modified Tarlov scores in the model control group were lower than those of the normal control group (P<0.05), and these two scores in the NM group, the EA group and the combined intervention group were all higher than those of the model control group (P<0.05); the scores in the combined intervention group were higher than those in the EA group and the NM group (P<0.05). The gastrocnemius fibers were well arranged and the myocyte morphology was normal in the normal control group. In the model control group, the gastrocnemius fibers were disarranged, the myocytes were irregular in morphology and the inflammatory cells were infiltrated in the local. In the NM group, the EA group and the combined intervention group, the muscle fibers were regularly arranged when compared with the model control group. After 1, 2 and 4 weeks of intervention, the cross-sectional areas of the gastrocnemius muscle fibers in the model control group were smaller than those of the normal control group (P<0.05). The cross-sectional areas in the NM group, the EA group and the combined intervention group were larger than those of the model control group (P<0.05), and the cross-sectional areas in the combined intervention group were larger than those in the NM group and the EA group (P<0.05). After intervention for 1, 2 and 4 weeks, the protein expressions of NF-κB and MuRF1 in the gastrocnemius muscle were higher in the model control group in comparison of those in the normal control group (P<0.05). In the NM group, the EA group and the combined intervention group, the expressions of NF-κB after intervention for 1, 2 and 4 weeks and the expressions of MuRF1 after 2 and 4 weeks of intervention were lower when compared with those in the model control group (P<0.05). In the combined intervention group, the protein expressions of NF-κB after intervention for 1, 2 and 4 weeks and the expressions of MuRF1 after 2 and 4 weeks of intervention were decreased when compared with those in the NM group and the EA group (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Electroacupuncture at "Jiaji" (EX-B 2) combined with NM may increase the muscle strength and sciatic function and alleviate gastrocnemius muscle atrophy in the rabbits with sciatic nerve injury. The underlying mechanism is related to the inhibition of NF-κB and MuRF1 expression.

Enabling the living capability of secreting liquids dynamically triggered by external stimuli while maintaining the bulk frame is a significant challenge for mucosa-inspired hydrogels. A mucosa-inspired electro-responsive hydrogel is developed in this study using the synergy between electro-responsive silk fibroin supramolecular non-covalent networks and covalent polyacrylamide and polyvinyl alcohol polymer networks. The formed supramolecular-covalent hydrogel exhibits a partial gel-sol transition upon the application of an electric field, and the liquid layer on the hydrogel surface near the cathode is used to mimic the mucus-secreting capability to regulate lubrication. The electro-responsive lubricating process can operate under a safe voltage and exhibits good reversibility. It is also a universal strategy to construct an electro-responsive hydrogel by introducing an electro-responsive supramolecular network into the polymer network. This mucosa-inspired electro-responsive supramolecular-covalent hydrogel offers a promising method for designing soft actuators or robots that can regulate lubrication using an electric strategy.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk factors for REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) in a case-control study. METHODS: Participants with probable RBD (pRBD) were defined using the RBD Questionnaire-Hong Kong (RBDQ-HK). Controls were collected by matching age and sex. Demographic information, lifestyle, comorbidity, prodromal symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD), and blood biomarkers were assessed. The associations between these factors and pRBD were investigated by logistic regression. Partial correlation analysis was used to assess the association between the severity of RBD and depression. RESULTS: A total of 278 pRBD participants (age = 58.31 ± 15.82 years) and 556 controls (age = 58.16 ± 15.84 years) were enrolled in this study. Patients with pRBD were more likely to be current alcohol drinkers (OR 1.50, 95% CI 1.0-2.32). Participants with pRBD had a higher Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17) score (OR 1.17, 95% CI 1.11-1.22) than controls and were more likely to report arthritis (OR 1.53, 95% CI 1.08-2.16), constipation (OR 1.93, 95% CI 1.31-2.86), hyposmia (OR 1.71, 95% CI 1.10-2.67), and depression (OR 3.15, 95% CI 2.17-4.58). Higher levels of total cholesterol (OR 1.15, 95% CI 0.99-1.33) and low-density lipoprotein (OR 1.21, 95% CI 0.99-1.47) had borderline associations with pRBD. Additionally, the severity of pRBD was positively related to depression (r = 0.31, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: We determined several risk factors for pRBD in this case-control study. Future studies are needed to understand the mechanism underlying the association between these factors and pRBD.

Noninvasive diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is important for patients. Significant differences in the methylation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) were found in AD brain tissue. Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) is a noninvasive and economical diagnostic tool. We aimed to characterize mtDNA methylation alterations in the plasma cfDNA of 31 AD patients and 26 age- and sex-matched cognitively normal control subjects. We found that the mtDNA methylation patterns differed between AD patients and control subjects. The mtDNA was predominantly hypomethylated in the plasma cfDNA of AD patients. The hypomethylation sites or regions were mainly located in mt-rRNA, mt-tRNA, and D-Loop regions. The hypomethylation of the D-Loop region in plasma cfDNA of AD patients was consistent with that in previous studies. This study presents evidence that hypomethylation in the non-protein coding region of mtDNA may contribute to the pathogenesis of AD and potential application for the diagnosis of AD.

To allieviate the heavy traffic burden over backhaul links and improve the user's quality of service (QoS), edge caching plays an important role in wireless networks. This paper investigated the optimal designs of content placement and transmission in wireless caching networks. The contents to be cached and requested were encoded into individual layers by scalable video coding (SVC), and different sets of layers can provide different viewing qualities to end users. The demanded contents were provided by helpers caching the requested layers, or by the macro-cell base station (MBS) otherwise. In the content placement phase, this work formulated and solved the delay minimization problem. In the content transmission phase, the sum rate optimization problem was established. To effectively solve the nonconvex problem, the methods of semi-definite relaxation (SDR), successive convex approximation (SCA), and arithmetic-geometric mean (AGM) inequality were adopted, after which the original problem was transformed into the convex form. The numerical results show that the transmission delay is reduced by caching contents at helpers. Moreover, the fast convergence of the proposed algorithm for solving the sum rate maximization problem is presented, and the sum rate gain of edge caching is also revealed, as compared to the benchmark scheme without content caching.

Here we document the deterministic evolution of capillary networks that morph by connecting more and more branches to water sources. The network grows with the objective of extracting in steady state higher and higher liquid flow rates. Growth happens through the generation of tree-shaped structures and the geometrical configuration of the dendritic network evolves as the number of connected sources increases. We present a novel methodology to generate capillary architectures and show how the evolution of the network leads to pump higher volumetric flow rates by capillary suction. The results suggest that networks generated within a plane lead to higher flow rates than networks generated within a three-dimensional domain, for the same volume of fluid.
