RESUMO

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of mortality in women, yet it has not raised the awareness from the public. The pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease differs significantly between females and males concerning the effect of sex hormones. Estrogen and progestogen impact cardiovascular system through genomic and non-genomic effects. Before menopause, cardiovascular protective effects of estrogens have been well described. Progestogens were often used in combination with estrogens in hormone therapy. Fluctuations in sex hormone levels, particularly estrogen deficiency, were considered the specific risk factor in women's cardiovascular disease. However, considerable heterogeneity in the impact of hormone therapy was observed in clinical trials. The heterogeneity is likely closely associated with factors such as the initial time, administration route, dosage, and formulation of hormone therapy. This review will delve into the pathogenesis and hormone therapy, summarizing the effect of female sex hormones on hypertension, pre-eclampsia, coronary heart disease, heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, and cardiovascular risk factors specific to women.

BACKGROUND: In bypass surgery for moyamoya disease (MMD), the superficial temporal artery's (STA) pressure needs to surpass that of the cortical M4 recipient of the middle cerebral artery (MCA), boosting cerebral blood flow into the MCA and enhancing cerebral circulation. This study investigates the STA-MCA arterial pressure parameters and gradients during bypass surgery, aiming to deepen our understanding of hemodynamic shifts pre- and post-operation. METHODS: DSA imaging data were prospectively collected from patients diagnosed with bilateral MMD who underwent STA-MCA bypass surgery between 2022 and 2023 and stratified according to the Suzuki stage. The mean arterial pressure (MAP) of the donor and recipient arteries was directly measured during the STA-MCA bypass procedure, and these data were statistically analyzed and evaluated. RESULTS: Among 48 MMD patients, Suzuki grading revealed that 43.8% were in early stages (II and III), while 56.2% were in advanced stages (IV, V, and VI). Predominantly, 77.1% presented with ischemic-type MMD and 22.9% with hemorrhagic type. Pre-bypass assessments showed that 62.5% exhibited antegrade blood flow direction, and 37.5% had retrograde. The mean recipient artery pressure was 35.0 ± 2.3 mmHg, with a mean donor-recipient pressure gradient (δP) of 46.4 ± 2.5 mmHg between donor and recipient arteries. Post-bypass, mean recipient artery pressure increased to 73.3 ± 1.6 mmHg. No significant correlation (r = 0.18, P = 0.21) was noted between δP and Suzuki staging. CONCLUSION: Our study elucidated that cerebral blood pressure significantly decreases beyond the moyamoya network at the distal M4 segment. Furthermore, we observed bidirectional flow in MCA territories and a significant positive pressure gradient between the STA and M4 segments. The lack of correlation between Suzuki stages and M4 pressures indicates that angiographic severity may not reflect hemodynamic conditions before surgery, highlighting the need for customized surgical approaches.

BACKGROUND: In the past few years, circulating complement C1q involvement in atherosclerosis has garnered growing research interest in addition to the emerging recognition of the novel lipid marker named atherogenic index of plasma (AIP). Nevertheless, among patients experiencing low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels less than 1.8mmol/L, the interplay between C1q combined with the AIP for coronary artery disease (CAD) is ambiguous. METHODS: Patients were stratified into a non-CAD and CAD group according to their coronary angiography. The association between C1q in conjunction with the AIP and CAD was explored using restricted cubic spline analyses and logistic regression models. To assess how it predicted, a receiver operating characteristic analysis was undertaken. RESULTS: A total of 7270 patients comprised 1476 non-CAD patients and 5794 patients diagnosed with CAD were analyzed. A comparison of the two groups showed that the C1q levels were notably higher compared to the CAD group, while AIP exhibited an inverse trend. Across quartiles of C1q, the AIP demonstrated a decline with increasing C1q levels, and significant differences were observed between the groups. A correlation analysis underscored a notable negative correlation between the two variables. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses revealed significant associations between CAD and the C1q quartile groups/AIP. Furthermore, compared with the Q4 group, a decrease in the C1q levels corresponded to an escalation in CAD risk, with the odds ratio rising from 1.661 to 2.314. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, there appears to be a notable positive correlation between the combination of C1q with the AIP and CAD.

Background: Atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases are significantly affected by low-grade chronic inflammation. As a new inflammatory marker, the systemic inflammation response index (SIRI) has been demonstrated to be associated with several cardiovascular disease prognoses. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic impact of SIRI in individuals having ischemic heart failure (IHF) following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Methods: This observational, retrospective cohort study was conducted at a single site. Finally, the research involved 1,963 individuals with IHF who underwent PCI, with a 36-month follow-up duration. Based on the SIRI quartiles, all patients were classified into four groups. Major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) were the primary outcomes. Every element of the main endpoint appeared in the secondary endpoints: all-cause mortality, non-fatal myocardial infarction (MI), and any revascularization. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was conducted to assess the incidence of endpoints across the four groups. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards analysis confirmed the independent impact of SIRI on both the primary and secondary endpoints. The restricted cubic spline (RCS) was used to assess the nonlinear association between the SIRI and endpoints. Subgroup analysis was performed to confirm the implications of SIRI on MACE in the different subgroups. Results: The main outcome was much more common in patients with a higher SIRI. The Kaplan-Meier curve was another tool that was used to confirm the favorable connection between SIRI and MACE. SIRI was individually connected to a higher chance of the main outcome according to multivariate analyses, whether or not SIRI was a constant [SIRI, per one-unit increase, hazard ratio (HR) 1.04, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.01-1.07, p = 0.003] or categorical variable [quartile of SIRI, the HR (95% CI) values for quartile 4 were 1.88 (1.47-2.42), p <0.001, with quartile 1 as a reference]. RCS demonstrated that the hazard of the primary and secondary endpoints generally increased as SIRI increased. A non-linear association of SIRI with the risk of MACE and any revascularization (Non-linear P <0.001) was observed. Subgroup analysis confirmed the increased risk of MACE with elevated SIRI in New York Heart Association (NYHA) class III-IV (P for interaction = 0.005). Conclusion: In patients with IHF undergoing PCI, increased SIRI was a risk factor for MACE independent of other factors. SIRI may represent a novel, promising, and low-grade inflammatory marker for the prognosis of patients with IHF undergoing PCI.

BACKGROUND: Systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) is a novel inflammatory marker based on neutrophils, platelets and lymphocytes counts, which has potential prognostic value among coronary artery disease (CAD) patients as described by some observational studies. We aimed to provide higher-certainty evidence to verify the association of SII with poor outcomes of CAD patients. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Ovid and Scopus were searched to find relevant literature exploring the prognostic value of SII among CAD patients. Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) extracted from the literature included were pooled with the fixed-effect or random-effect model. Sensitivity analyses and subgroup analyses were conducted to detect the source of heterogeneity and evaluate the stability of results. RESULTS: A total of nine studies with 15,832 participants were included. The quantitative synthesis including eight studies with 15,657 participants showed that the high SII was related to the major adverse cardiovascular event in CAD patients (HR with 95% CI: 2.36 [1.67, 3.33]). After eliminating heterogeneity and adjusting for publication bias, the above result was still robust (HR with 95% CI: 1.67 [1.32, 2.12]). Additionally, we also demonstrated the prognostic values of SII for all-cause death, cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction and stroke. CONCLUSION: Higher SII has prognostic values for adverse outcomes in CAD patients.

RESUMO

Microwave absorption materials (MAMs) are originally developed for military purposes, but have since evolved into versatile materials with promising applications in modern technologies, including household use. Despite significant progress in bench-side research over the past decade, MAMs remain limited in their scope and have yet to be widely adopted. This review explores the history of MAMs from first-generation coatings to second-generation functional absorbers, identifies bottlenecks hindering their maturation. It also presents potential solutions such as exploring broader spatial scales, advanced characterization, introducing liquid media, utilizing novel toolbox (machine learning, ML), and proximity of lab to end-user. Additionally, it meticulously presents compelling applications of MAMs in medicine, mechanics, energy, optics, and sensing, which go beyond absorption efficiency, along with their current development status and prospects. This interdisciplinary research direction differs from previous research which primarily focused on meeting traditional requirements (i.e., thin, lightweight, wide, and strong), and can be defined as the next generation of smart absorbers. Ultimately, the effective utilization of ubiquitous electromagnetic (EM) waves, aided by third-generation MAMs, should be better aligned with future expectations.

In tonal languages, which are spoken by nearly one-third of the world's population, speakers precisely control the tension of vocal folds in the larynx to modulate pitch in order to distinguish words with completely different meanings. The specific pitch trajectories for a given tonal language are called lexical tones. Here, we used high-density direct cortical recordings to determine the neural basis of lexical tone production in native Mandarin-speaking participants. We found that instead of a tone category-selective coding, local populations in the bilateral laryngeal motor cortex (LMC) encode articulatory kinematic information to generate the pitch dynamics of lexical tones. Using a computational model of tone production, we discovered two distinct patterns of population activity in LMC commanding pitch rising and lowering. Finally, we showed that direct electrocortical stimulation of different local populations in LMC evoked pitch rising and lowering during tone production, respectively. Together, these results reveal the neural basis of vocal pitch control of lexical tones in tonal languages.

BACKGROUND: The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, which is a reliable substitute indicator for insulin resistance, has been considered an independent risk factor for long-term outcomes in patients with cardiovascular disease. However, it remains unknown whether the TyG index is associated with poor prognosis in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients with prior coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). METHODS: A total of 1158 ACS patients with prior CABG undergoing PCI were retrospectively studied. The TyG index was calculated by ln[fasting triglyceride (mg/dL) × fasting blood glucose (mg/dL)/2]. The primary endpoint was major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE), a composite of all-cause death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, and unplanned repeat revascularization. RESULTS: During a median of 42-month follow-up, 350 patients (30.2%) experienced at least one endpoint event. Based on the optimal cut-off value of the TyG index, patients were divided into the high TyG index group and the low TyG index group. Patients in the high TyG index group had higher risks of MACCE (35.3% vs. 25.3%, p < 0.001), major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) (31.1% vs. 23.4%, p = 0.003), nonfatal stroke (4.2% vs. 1.9%, p = 0.022) and unplanned repeat revascularization (19.4% vs. 11.3%, p < 0.001) than those in the low TyG index group. Cox regression analysis demonstrated that there was an independent association between the TyG index and MACCE regardless of whether the TyG index was a continuous or categorical variable (HR 1.42, 95% CI 1.09-1.86, p = 0.009; HR 1.53, 95% CI 1.16-2.01, p = 0.003, respectively). Restricted cubic spline curve exhibited that the relationship between the TyG index and MACCE was linear (p for non-linear = 0.595, p for overall = 0.005). By incorporating the TyG index groups into baseline risk model, the accuracy of predicting MACCE was improved [AUC: baseline risk model, 0.618 vs. baseline risk model + TyG index groups, 0.636, p for comparison = 0.042]. CONCLUSIONS: The TyG index is independently associated with MACCE, suggesting that the TyG index may serve as a valid indicator for predicting poor prognosis in ACS patients with prior CABG undergoing PCI.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition has been proven to be associated with increased risk of poor prognosis in a series of diseases. This study explored the association between poor nutritional status and prognosis in patients with ischemic heart failure (IHF) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). METHODS: The study enrolled 1745 patients with IHF undergoing PCI. The mean follow-up time was 28.7 months. Nutritional status was assessed by geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI). All patients were divided into four groups according to GNRI quartiles (median and interquartile range: 103.8, 99.9-107.7). The primary endpoint was major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), and the secondary endpoints were each component of the primary endpoint as follows: all-cause mortality, non-fatal myocardial infarction (MI), and any revascularization. The Kaplan-Meier survival analyses were performed to evaluate the incidence of the endpoints among 4 groups. The multivariate Cox proportional hazards analysis confirmed the independent effect of GNRI on the primary endpoint and secondary endpoints. The restricted cubic spline (RCS) was performed to evaluate the non-linear association of GNRI with MACE. RESULT: The negative correlation of the GNRI with MACE (Log-rank P < 0.001), all-cause mortality (Log-rank P < 0.001) and any revascularization (Log-rank P < 0.001) was confirmed through the Kaplan-Meier curves. Multivariate analysis showed that the decreased GNRI was independently related to increased risk of MACE (Quartile 1 versus Quartile 4: HR, 95% CI: 2.66, 2.01-3.51, P < 0.001), all-cause mortality (Quartile 1 versus Quartile 4: HR, 95% CI: 2.33, 1.54-3.50, P < 0.001) and any revascularization (Quartile 1 versus Quartile 4: HR, 95% CI: 3.42, 2.22-5.27, P < 0.001). In addition, the non-linear association of GNRI with MACE was shown through RCS and the risk of MACE decreased as the GNRI increased in general (Non-linear P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Decreased GNRI was an independent risk factor of MACE in IHF patients undergoing PCI.

Recent studies have shown that the feasibility of speech brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) as a clinically valid treatment in helping nontonal language patients with communication disorders restore their speech ability. However, tonal language speech BCI is challenging because additional precise control of laryngeal movements to produce lexical tones is required. Thus, the model should emphasize the features from the tonal-related cortex. Here, we designed a modularized multistream neural network that directly synthesizes tonal language speech from intracranial recordings. The network decoded lexical tones and base syllables independently via parallel streams of neural network modules inspired by neuroscience findings. The speech was synthesized by combining tonal syllable labels with nondiscriminant speech neural activity. Compared to commonly used baseline models, our proposed models achieved higher performance with modest training data and computational costs. These findings raise a potential strategy for approaching tonal language speech restoration.

Background: Metabolic abnormalities are associated with the occurrence, severity, and poor prognosis of coronary artery disease (CAD), some of which affect the antiplatelet efficacy of clopidogrel. Free fatty acids (FFAs) is a biomarker for metabolic abnormalities, and elevated FFAs is observed among CAD patients. Whether FFAs enhances residual platelet reactivity induced by adenosine diphosphate (ADP) while using clopidogrel was unknown. The purpose of our study is exploring the issue. Method: Current study included 1,277 CAD patients using clopidogrel and used logistic regression to detect whether the higher level of FFAs is associated with high residual platelet reactivity (HRPR). We additionally performed subgroup and sensitivity analyses to evaluate the stability of the results. We defined HRPR as ADP-induced platelet inhibition rate (ADPi) < 50% plus ADP-induced maximum amplitude (MAADP) > 47 mm. Results: 486 patients (38.1%) showed HRPR. The proportion of HRPR among patients with higher FFAs (>0.445 mmol/L) is greater than among patients with lower FFAs (46.4% vs. 32.6%, P < 0.001). Multivariate logistic regression demonstrated that higher FFAs (>0.445 mmol/L) is independently associated with HRPR (adjusted OR = 1.745, 95% CI, 1.352-2.254). After subgroup and sensitivity analyses, the results remained robust. Conclusion: The higher level of FFAs enhances residual platelet reactivity induced by ADP and is independently associated with clopidogrel HRPR.

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to identify the correspondence between the anterior terminations of the arcuate fasciculus (AF) and third branch of the superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF-III) and the intraoperative direct cortical electrical stimulation (DCS)-induced speech arrest area. METHODS: The authors retrospectively screened 75 glioma patients (group 1) who received intraoperative DCS mapping in the left dominant frontal cortex. To minimize the influence of tumors or edema, we subsequently selected 26 patients (group 2) with glioma or edema not affecting Broca's area, the ventral precentral gyrus (vPCG), and the subcortical pathways to generate DCS functional maps and to construct the anterior terminations of AF and SLF-III with tractography. Next, a grid-by-grid pairwise comparison was performed between the fiber terminations and the DCS-induced speech arrest sites to calculate Cohen's kappa coefficient (κ) in both groups 1 and 2. Finally, the authors also demonstrated the distribution of the AF/SLF-III anterior projection maps obtained in 192 healthy participants (group 3) and subsequently correlated these with the speech arrest sites in group 2 to examine their validity in predicting speech output area. RESULTS: The authors found that speech arrest sites were substantially consistent with SLF-III anterior terminations (group 1, κ = 0.64 ± 0.03; group 2, κ = 0.73 ± 0.05) and moderately consistent with AF (group 1, κ = 0.51 ± 0.03; group 2, κ = 0.49 ± 0.05) and AF/SLF-III complex (group 1, κ = 0.54 ± 0.03; group 2, κ = 0.56 ± 0.05) terminations (all p < 0.0001). The DCS speech arrest sites of the group 2 patients mainly (85.1%) emerged at the anterior bank of the vPCG (vPCGa). In group 3, both terminations of AF and SLF-III converged onto the vPCGa, and their terminations well predicted the DCS speech output area of group 2 (AF, area under the curve [AUC] 86.5%; SLF-III, AUC 79.0%; AF/SLF-III complex, AUC 86.7%). CONCLUSIONS: This study supports the key role of the left vPCGa as the speech output node by showing convergence between speech output mapping and anterior AF/SLF-III connectivity in the vPCGa. These findings may contribute to the understanding of speech networks and could have clinical implications in preoperative surgical planning.

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to explore the predictive value of CT radiomics and clinical characteristics for treatment response in COVID-19 patients. METHODS: Data were collected from clinical/auxiliary examinations and follow-ups of COVID-19 patients. Whole lung radiomics feature extraction was performed at baseline chest CT. Radiomics, clinical, and combined features (nomogram) were evaluated for predicting treatment response. RESULTS: Among 36 COVID-19 patients, mild, common, severe, and critical disease symptoms were found in 1, 21, 13, and 1 of them, respectively. Twenty-five (1 mild, 18 common, and 6 severe) patients showed a good response to treatment and 11 poor/fair responses. The clinical classification (p = 0.025) and serum creatinine (p = 0.010) on admission and small area emphasis (p = 0.036) from radiomics analysis significantly differed between the two groups. Predictive models were constructed based on the radiomics, clinical features, and nomogram showing an area under the curve of 0.651, 0.836, and 0.869, respectively. The nomogram achieved good calibration. CONCLUSION: This new, non-invasive, and low-cost prediction model that combines the radiomics and clinical features is useful for identifying COVID-19 patients who may not respond well to treatment.

BACKGROUND: Targeted nanoparticles' preparation can enhance local drug concentration and reduce the side effects of drugs in non-targeted organs. At present, many patents have been applied for in the field of bone-targeted nanoparticles' preparations. They play an important role in the treatment and diagnosis of diseases. In this experiment, nanoparticles with bone targeting function were prepared by poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) copolymer and tetracycline. These nanoparticles contain active ingredients in the Huangqi Sanxian decoction, a kind of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) compound formula. These nanoparticles are predicted to be useful in the treatment of osteoporosis. METHODS: Synthesis of tetracycline targeting groups was performed by acylation reaction, and PLGA nanoparticles were prepared by the Emulsification-solvent Evaporation Method. The appearance and particle size of the product were evaluated, and the effects of nanoparticles on the physiological activities of osteoblasts were observed. Finally, the bone-targeting ability of targeted nanoparticles in vivo and in vitro was investigated. RESULTS: The average particle size of the nanoparticles was about 200 nm, and the average drug entrapment was 60%. In vitro evaluation of osteoblasts assay showed that the nanoparticles can be well taken by cells. Their good biocompatibility and sustained-release properties reduce the toxic side effects of drugs when they promote osteoblasts' physiological activities. The results of the in vitro and in vivo bone targeting ability assays showed that tetracycline modified nanoparticles could effectively accumulate in the bone, indicating the great bone-targeting ability of the nanoparticles. The use of PLGA to load active components in the TCM compound formulas and remodel targeting groups is expected to improve drug efficacy, reduce drug dosage, and effects on non- action sites. This may provide new ideas for the development of TCM compound dosage forms. CONCLUSION: In summary, we prepared PLGA nanoparticles of multiple TCM ingredients with bone targeting ability, and they had good morphological appearance, and a promoting effect on various physiological activities of osteoblasts.

Background: In previous studies, the TyG index (triglyceride-glucose index) has been proven to be closely associated with the prognosis of cardiovascular disease. However, the impact of TyG index on the prognosis of patients with ischemic HF (heart failure) undergoing PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention) is still unclear. Method: In this study, 2055 patients with ischemic HF were retrospectively enrolled and classified into four groups based on quartiles of the TyG index. The primary endpoint was MACE (major adverse cardiovascular events) consisting of all-cause mortality, non-fatal MI (myocardial infarction), and any revascularization. The incidence of the endpoints among the four groups was assessed through Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. The independent correlation between TyG index and endpoints was analyzed with multivariate Cox regression models. Besides, the RCS (restricted cubic spline) analysis was performed to examine the nonlinear relationship between TyG index and MACE. Result: The incidence of MACE was significantly higher in participants with a higher TyG index. The positive association between the TyG index and MACE was also confirmed in the Kaplan-Meier survival analyses. Multivariate cox proportional hazards analysis indicated that the TyG index was independently associated with the increased risk of MACE, regardless of whether TyG was a continuous [TyG, per 1-unit increase, HR (hazard ratio) 1.41, 95% CI (confidence interval) 1.22-1.62, P < 0.001] or categorical variable [quartile of TyG, the HR (95% CI) values for quartile 4 was 1.92 (1.48-2.49), with quartile 1 as a reference]. In addition, the nonlinear association of TyG index with MACE was shown through RCS model and the risk of MACE increased as the TyG index increased in general (Nonlinear p=0.0215). Besides, no obvious interaction was found in the association of TyG with MACE between the DM (diabetes mellitus) group and the no-DM group. Conclusion: Among patients with ischemic HF undergoing PCI, the TyG index was correlated with MACE independently and positively.

Background: Inflammation increases the risk of thrombosis in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients and affects the antiplatelet efficacy of clopidogrel. C1q interacts with platelets to activate platelets and induce thrombosis by participating in and regulating the inflammatory response. Whether C1q affects adenosine diphosphate (ADP)-induced platelet reactivity during clopidogrel therapy was unclear and our study aimed to explore the issue. Method: We enrolled 1,334 CAD patients receiving clopidogrel therapy and evaluated the association between C1q level and high residual platelet reactivity (HRPR) using logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS). HRPR was defined as ADP-induced maximum amplitude (MAADP) > 47 mm plus ADP-induced platelet aggregation (ADPi) < 50%. Results: A total of 516 patients (38.7%) performed HRPR. The frequency of HRPR increases with the increase in C1q level (26.3%, 38.4%, 43.2%, and 46.7% for the 1st to 4th quartile of C1q). The result of multivariate logistic regression demonstrated elevated C1q as an independent predictor for HRPR (2nd quartile: OR = 1.722, 95% CI 1.215-2.440; 3rd quartile: OR = 2.015, 95% CI 1.413-2.874; 4th quartile: OR = 2.362, 95% CI 1.631-3.421, compared to the 1st quartile). RCS depicted the nonlinear relationship between C1q and HRPR risk (p for non-linear < 0.05). Conclusion: The current research is the first to explore the association of C1q and ADP-induced platelet reactivity and to demonstrate elevated C1q as an independent risk factor for HRPR in CAD patients during clopidogrel therapy.

Image detail enhancement is critical to the performance of short-wave infrared (SWIR) imaging systems, especially to the long-range systems. However, the existing high-performance infrared (IR) image enhancement methods typically have difficulty in meeting the requirements of the imaging system with high resolution and high frame rate. In this paper, we propose an ultra-fast and simple SWIR image detail enhancement method based on the difference of Gaussian (DoG) filter and plateau equalization. Our method consists of efficient edge detail information extraction and histogram equalization. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method achieves outstanding enhancement performance with a frame rate around 50 fps for 1280×1024 SWIR images.

Demand for electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers continues to increase with technological advances in wearable electronics and military applications. In this study, a new strategy to overcome the drawbacks of current absorbers by employing the co-contribution of functional polymer frameworks and liquids with strong EMW absorption properties is proposed. Strongly polar water, dimethyl sulfoxide/water mixtures, and highly conductive 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethyl sulfate ([EMI][ES]) are immobilized in dielectrically inert polymer networks to form different classes of gels (hydrogels, organogels, and ionogels). These gels demonstrate a high correlation between their dielectric properties and polarity/ionic conductivity/non-covalent interaction of immobilized liquids. Thus, the EMW absorption performances of the gels can be precisely tuned over a wide range due to the diversity and stability of the liquids. The prepared hydrogels show good shielding performance (shielding efficiency > 20 dB) due to the high dielectric constants, while organogels with moderate attenuation ability and impedance matching achieve full-wave absorption in X-band (8.2-12.4 GHz) at 2.5 ± 0.5 mm. The ionogels also offer a wide effective absorption bandwidth (10.79-16.38 GHz at 2.2 mm) via prominent ionic conduction loss. In short, this work provides a conceptually novel platform to develop high-efficient, customizable, and low-cost functional absorbers.
